I walked into the theater with a closed mind I admit that I did not care for the J.J. Abrams 2009 Star Trek so I was not expecting much more from Into Darkness. First the Negatives The supersonic Loud explosions, crashes and fights were a bit over the top to true trek fans as Star Trek has always been about substance not visual tricks although in IMAX 3D they were impressive. Now the positives A Starfleet Officer sets off a explosion at a Starfleet records facility a library in essences. In a top brass meeting following that explosion Captain Kirk raises the question “A library why would anyone blow up a library? It’s then revealed that that library was not exactly a library and that Starfleet in that facility was a top secret unofficial branch of Starfleet called Section-31. Holy s**t Section-31 only hard core Trekkies will get that one they were revealed in the Star Trek Deep Space Nine series as a sort of secret Star Fleet CIA doing things that Star Fleet could not do answering to no one but themselves with no rules. While this meeting is going on in a high office building in San Francisco it’ s attacked by a single helicopter with a single assailant how could this be ? As we progress Captain Kirk is give the assignment of going to Kronos and launching a series of new photon torpedoes manufactured by Section-31. When they arrive at Kronos and do hand to hand combat with a patrol of Klingon Warriors and getting there asses kicked. Then someone arrives on the scene and singlehanded kicks the Klingon’s asses he then removes his face covering and to Kirk’s surprise it’s the same guy that was shooting up the conference from the helicopter. As we move forward it’s revealed that that superhero guy is indeed a superhero Noonien Singh Kahn. And in this alternate reality Star Trek universe still has his crew and want to be reunited with them. In reading reviews prior to seeing it I was expecting Mr. Spock and Lieutenant Uhura to jump each other’s bones at every chance this did not happen and they did their relationship perfect. This a good film a very good film it’s can be accepted by non Trek fans as a good action science film and there is enough Trek references to even the most hard core Trek fans. We even meet a certain female doctor friend of Captain Kirk who has a prominent role in Kirk future apparently in both realities. Go see this it is good

I am still a young man who grew up watching IRON MAN,Spider Man on fox Kids and specially iron man used to be my favorite super hero and Mandarin the super powerful evil villain, so thats why i was so eager to watch this Movie right from last year when i watched the trailer and boy was I disappointed? Black has ridiculed each and every person and character associated with the IRON MAN-3. I still don’t get it, just to please some kids section of audience or make it more family friendly u try to ruin one of the most vicious characters and make him a point of comedy so that u can get some more money from the kids section. Even Iron Man-2 seems much better to me. And the funny dialogs are not so funny anymore after i saw that idiotic twist in the second half. Pardon me for my English but seriously really disappointed seeing such a wonderful characters being made a laughing point just for the sake of good reviews or money.

Based on a true story about three really dumb guys, and if it weren’t for all the blood and guts you’d think PAIN & GAIN was another THREE STOOGES reboot. It’s questionable if director Michael Bay, who at least tells a story without overdoing his usual editorial distractions, shaky cameras and extreme closeups, were making a slapstick comedy or a Tarantinoesque crime flick of the heist nature. We begin with a flash of Mark Walhberg’s Daniel Lugo being chased by the police, his body flying in the air and his head smashing into a windshield: That’s the future and we quickly leap to the past where our story, eventually narrated by just about every character on board, properly introduces Lugo as a personal trainer in a mediocre weight lifting gym. He really takes his job seriously, wanting his clients to become as buff as he is. Especially the annoyingly opinionated millionaire Victor Kershaw who, played by Tony Shalhoub, becomes the target for a bizarre kidnapping scheme. Lugo’s partners in crime are likewise muscular dimwits: African American Adrian (Anthony Mackie) has an embarrassing testosterone problem while Dwayne Johnson’s Paul Doyle, the Curly of these particular STOOGES, is an ex-convict Born Again to an intentionally idiotic level. The most involving scenes have the trio putting their plan into action, which includes several failed attempts. The characters work great together as criminal climbers, playing off each other’s gifts (muscle) and shortcomings (brains). After Victor’s successfully kidnapped the film morphs into a half-baked dark comedy where torture and violence is treated like a pie fight; yet there’s still a plot at hand. It’s when Victor’s out of the picture (somewhat) and the buffoons get deeper and deeper in a hole… Doyle becomes a cokehead and Lugo plans an even more ludicrous scheme… you’ll wish they’d attempt something simple, like bank robbery or a jewelry heist – at least they’d have a destination! Ed Harris as Victor’s gumshoe investigator, eventually putting the jigsaw together, is only necessary for tying up all the loose ends, which should have happened much sooner.

A great movie even with the unnecessarily and perhaps outdated use of switches and manual instrumentation for Tom Cruise’s bubble cruiser, an almost nauseating voice-over narrative at the beginning unlike the acceptable to some voice over of Blade Runner (1982), a patently fake looking lunar moon, and the disappearance of a major female character occurring off camera. This is one of those movies where such flaws are easily overcome by the rest of the visual spectacle, artistic landscape and set design, and of course the storyline. What is fascinating about this tent-pole sci fi psychological action thriller extravaganza is that it isn’t all that original, but nevertheless with its tight fusion of previous incarnations that are so well weaved into the storyline, producing a substantive film with two compelling twists offering an American theme ending that it becomes more than its parts and becoming a very well made movie. There are strong elements taken from Total Recall (1990) and improved on, devoid of the stereotypical arch enemy and false persona and replaced both by an underlying emotional humanity as well as a detached alien presence. There are elements of The Matrix (1999) but not as eerily and epic-like presentation retaining more of simplicity and uncluttered landscape of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1982) but incorporating elements of awesomeness as found in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and psychological unbalancing as found in Source Code (2011). The twists in this movie is similar to that found in Moon (2009) which focused more on the singular psychological and ethical aspect of a man confronted with loneliness and in which Oblivion finds a way to expand of the more tortured and dichotomous incongruity of the multiplicity of human life or that of a man having to face up to what had been an entire illusion one’s existence as in Planet of the Apes (1968). Even so, Oblivion manages to retain a persistent theme of love and intimacy Fahrenheit 451 (1966) and as convoluted as Solaris (2002). The musical sound track resonates in places as symphonic as those found in Electric Dreams (1984) or Wavelength (1983). Other familiar themes may have been taken from Tom Cruise’s own Minority Report (2002) and Surrogates (2009) as well as one of the sci fi classics of all time Blade Runner (1982) that dwelt with human identity and emotional connections in a dystrophic future. As an afterthought, the voice-over at the beginning of the movie actually is quite clever and relevant if one ties it to the ending of the movie.

Description
In the near future, a crack unit of anti-terrorism specialists are framed for a crime they did not commit. A few of them promptly escape from a devastating counterattack and flee back to Washington. Still wanted fugitives under the order of the President, the remaining G I Joes must uncover the truth and clear their name. Yes there are similarities to the premise of “The Losers” and “A-Team” but G I Joe Retaliation heaps in that familiar premise with a good dose of comic book action and blockbuster thrills. However, it’s loyalty to the G I Joe comic books cannot make us overlook the convoluted narrative, bland characters and overall inappropriate directing style. If G I Joe: Rise of Cobra captured the spirit of the cheesy 80s era Saturday morning cartoon, G I Joe Retaliation oozes with the feel of the grittier G I Joe comic books written by Larry Hama. The tone from the get go is one of desperation and tension. The stakes are high and there is little chance of the good guys winning, yet they will pull it off somehow. Sadly, that is not necessarily a good thing. Hama was enamored with his ninja characters and it shows here in the movie. Cutting between the Joes trying to clear their name and the ninjas on their quest to the Himalayas is like cutting between 2 very different movies. Only the most hardcore of G I Joe comic fans will “get it”. The film is littered with references to the comics (such as the Blind Master of Arashikage Clan, the look of Cobra Commander, etc) that will be lost on normal audience. Furthermore, this movie feels less like a sequel and more like a reboot of the franchise. How did Cobra turn into this vast underground terror organization after it was obliterated in the first movie? Why does everyone acknowledge Cobra Commander as supreme leader when in the first movie he only declares himself as “Commander” to one person (who aside from a brief cameo, never has an active role in this movie). While the story is a bit of a mess, the screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (writers of Zombieland) is very well written, mixing the occasional humor with down to earth banter that fits each character’s personality. Dwayne Johnson works best with their script as his character of Roadblock shares such a marvelous chemistry with Channing Tatum’s Duke. Jonathan Pryce shines as well playing both the President and his impostor. Sadly, the rest of the cast do not seem as invested in the story as the main leads. The bad guys seem underwhelming, the new G I Joe members Flint and Lady Jaye are overshadowed by Dwayne Johnson’s screen presence and Bruce Willis is barely there. All in all, it was a good script handled badly. The narrative suffers the same fate; it has some good underlying political themes about America’s international presence, attitude toward foreign intervention and nuclear disarmament. Yet these are only touch and go, never elaborated on or even satired. A little more “brains” in this blockbuster could have scored it more points. “Step Up” director Jon Chu seems out of his element directing a big action blockbuster. You got some cool visuals here but Jon Chu shoots them too tight and his camera-work too frantic for any of the action to shine. At least Stephan Sommers had a good grasp on how to showcase big action scenes with a good mix of wide angles and long shots. Chu loses them in blurry close ups of shoulders, elbows, and everything BUT the full action. Could it be a case of a director who is out of his element? He takes the screenplay and gives it such lousy pacing laced with a good measure of exposition. The dialogue heavy scenes seem long and drawn out. Convenient plot twists abound and one particular character has a logic defying switch of allegiance. Tone wise, the film can never seem to decide if it is going for a more realistic feel or comic book action. You have high flying stunts on a cliffside, bullet time shootouts, over the top villainous plots to blow up cities and rule the world, high octane vehicle combat, but at the same time you have scenes of characters just shooting at each other from cover like soldiers do in real life. The ninjas got this whole “realistic touch” thing the worst. After a spectacular deflect-the-shurikens-with-bullets scene, the ninjas Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow proceed to……..wrestle each other. Thats right, no kung fu, no high flying kicks or lightning fast fist cuffs. In the end, G I Joe Retaliation comes across as an overindulgent piece of fan fiction. The creative team seems more obsessed with sticking as close to the visuals of the comic books than to give a deep, character driven narrative. Whichever “genius” got a director best known for street dancing movies and that Justin Bieber biopic to come and direct a big budget action blockbuster ought to be fired. Fans will no doubt be willing to overlook all the flaws on the single notion that it adheres closely to the source material these fans have come to love.

The current score on IMDb is too low. (Why does that happen all the time??) This is a fairly good film. It’s worth about a 7.5. Saoirse Ronan was perfectly cast for this role as the sensitive, conflicted alien slowly gaining the trust of the human survivor group. Diane Kruger and William Hurt were also good. (Once again, I’m struck how so many Hollywood movies lately have non-American actors playing Americans. What’s that all about?) “The Host” is part of a new genre I would call “sci fi for chicks”. If it bothers you to see a “soft” science-fiction film with love-sick young people, noble suicides, impossibly handsome young men, aliens with emotions, etc., don’t go see this one. It’s the old male v. female dilemma: Should we kill the hated aliens or coax them out and make friends with them? There was not enough exposition at the start about the horrors of the alien invasion. The writers and producers seem to have assumed that moviegoers would understand why the characters want to “remain human” and why they would refer to a human-hosted alien as “it”. Perhaps it was better explained in the book. The device of Melinda’s consciousness remaining fully alert, and Wanda and Melinda actually talking to each other for our benefit, might put some moviegoers off. (I’m not sure. I haven’t read the other reviews.) However, once I suspended my disbelief, I was able to go with the flow. They threw the male viewers a bone: Kruger and Ronan, to start. there were a few car and motorcycle chases (involving futuristic-looking chrome vehicles), and shoot outs. Hey, this is a Hollywood movie, after all. The theme of humans hosting aliens is not original, but they took the concept in a different direction. The movie is slick and well made, but there were a few clichés and many, many aspects of the story that were glossed over, left unexplained or just not realistic. The survivors here were mostly young Hollywood pretty boys, not a ragged group of tough survivors (like on “Walking Dead”, for example.) Still, I appreciated some of the details of the “good alien” theme, like a society of honest and trustworthy aliens that doesn’t need cash to function, or where they will simply give your their car if you need it or where everyone drives at the speed limit. Good forbid we should have a society like that! Kill them! And I liked the part where the other seekers looked at the evil seeker (played by Kruger) and pointed out that she was getting a little too obsessed and after all they were the good guys. There are many species that coexist in symbiosis. It’s interesting to think that maybe it would do our species good.

I truly enjoyed this film; however, I could not get the image out of my head how much better this film could have been if this film had indeed been the premise for Die Hard 5. The ridiculous plot, the diabolical villain, and John McClane finessing his way through halls and hidden corridors of an enemy overrun White House… this is the film avid Die Hard fans wanted “A Good Day to Die Hard” to be about!!! This film parallels Die Hard 1 in ever plot point imaginable; except there are no Barra bonds. However, would of’s, should of’s, could of’s is not what this review is all about. So let’s talk about “Olympus Has Fallen”. Gerard Butler stars as Mike Banning, a former Secret Service agent / black ops ranger who’s only interest is to one day return to duty protecting the President of the United States. As the Prime Minister of South Korea is visiting the White House, a planned strategic assault on the White House has been coordinated to coincide with the Prime Minister’s arrival. Taken completely by surprised, the White House (Olympus) quickly falls into the hands of a ruthless North Korean assailant, Kang (played wonderfully by Rick Yune). Once the Secret Service realizes that the White House is under attack, they quickly hurry the President and Prime Minister to the President’s protective bunker below the White House. Except there is a traitor amongst them, and the protective bunker now houses the three (3) key people needed to unlock the US arsenal of nuclear missiles and the madman who wants their access codes. Butler does a great job portraying the severely overwhelmed, over-matched would-be hero. One man against a super villain and his horde of minions with their endless supply of the most sophisticated weapons known on this planet (I bet even you think this sounds like a Die Hard film right about now)… anyways I digress. My biggest complaint of this film has to be Aaron Eckhart as President Benjamin Asher. I’m afraid if I am one of only three people on the President’s staff entrusted with keeping the codes to our nuclear stock pile in check, then I definitely feel that I would be willing to give my life to ensure that these codes never fell in the hands of a ruthless terrorist. However, as each of these people start the get tortured for their access codes President Asher caves in and orders them to give up their code (WHIMP). Even Mr. Takagi was able to take his access code to his grave in Die Hard 1, rather than give it up to the evil Hans Gruber, and he was only protecting Barra bonds. Anyways, this film is a real action adventure with plenty of guns, bullets, and explosions. Definitely your Saturday Matinée type movie with plenty of excitement to keep you entertained and amused. If you are an avid movie fan, you can even keep track of how many similarities you find between this film and Die Hard 1 or better yet make a comment on whether or not you agree/disagree if this would have been a better Die Hard 5 premise. Either way, this film is no thinking required, senseless, mind-numbing action adventure fun.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is back on the Big screen and Boy did he layeth the Smackdown. The story follows the character played by Dwayne, who’s son is caught in drug deal after he was set up,and he tries to reduce his jail sentence By working with Drug Enforcement Administration by helping them to caught some big drug king-pins. The movie is a drama and it is not an outright action flick or something. Props goes to Dwayne johnson for his acting in this flick, given he always have the screen Charisma and personality for the big screen but he’s acting needed improvement and here he’s hard work and effort shows by bringing such an endearing Character to life. One major problem i had with this film was with the storyline of an supporting character Daniel, which makes me say “ok it is decent but go on back to the main storyline” which was far more intense and enjoyable. Other supporting cast is good, the character of agent Cooper and federal lawyer who is suppose to be good but is willing to do anything and putting people on life for her benefit are acted and written very well and yes there are some plot points which look derivative of other film of this drug/crime genre, but with the environment of this film you buy into it. So finally a rare good film in this first quarter of this year.Watch it.

Mostly I was interested in this movie knowing Tommy Wirkola directed it because I loved very much his Dead Snow, and it shows. It’s stylish, dark, suspenseful, moderately gory, fast-paced and mesmerizing! I really can’t recall enjoying another fairy tale this much. Finally a breath of fresh air. Great direction, great writing, great acting, great everything! The 3D rocked this time. I’ll definitely go and see it again and will be looking forward to the Blu Ray. And Gemma Arterton is simply a goddess.

After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez, the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell, Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez’ path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister, will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown.

Inspired by real events, this silly, intermittently enjoyable thriller takes place in Los Angeles in 1949, where mobster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) is hellbent on taking over the town with his drugs and vice empire. With most of the city’s cops on his payroll, it falls to honest sergeant John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) to lead Ryan Gosling and a small team in an effort to shut down Cohen’s operation through any means necessary. Strong in its period detailing and festooned in wall-to-wall violence, Gangster Squad is slick enough, and yet the action sequences consistently remind you that you’re not watching The Untouchables, as much as director Ruben Fleischer might want you to think you are. And all the muscular gunplay and smoky production design in the land can’t always overcome a sloppy script that ticks every box you might imagine it would. Gosling’s relationship with Cohen’s moll Grace (Emma Stone) aims for Bogart-Bacall cool, but the pair are unexpectedly and disappointingly lacking in heat, and their byplay comes up some way short, while the focus on that and Brolin’s family life means the rest of the squad (Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi) barely register as characters. But a dead-eyed Penn is terrific, and when the action occasionally finds the bullseye, there’s just enough vibrant style to see it through.

There are some decent high profile actors in this turkey. Do they really need the money that badly? Are they doing a favor for a friend – “Hey, my kid is directing this movie, would you be in it for me? I’ll do one for your next year . . . . ” Maybe the whole project looks different before the cameras actually start rolling. The direction in this is terrible. The pace is ridiculously show and the look is very stagey. “You two stand over there and take turns reading these sentences.” It is filled with self-important, self-righteous, overwrought people who have all been horribly wronged by an evil corporation and a corrupt government. Woah. That’s original. Really hard hitting stuff. Corporations are evil. We would be so much better off in the world without them. Too bad. I was looking forward in particular to see Kim Coates outside of his Sons of Anarchy role, Andy Garcia is a good actor, and I am a huge fan of Forest Whitaker. But this thing was dumb, dumb, dumb. Poorly written, poorly directed. Decent production values. It looks professional. That’s the only reason I gave it the three stars.

I only had one thought on my mind for this Christmas: see Django Unchained. Quentin Tarantino’s latest opus, a Western set two years before the Civil War, concerns a former slave named Django (Jamie Foxx). He is freed by bounty hunter Dr. King Shultz (Christoph Waltz) in order to help him with a bounty. Quite quickly, Shultz takes Django under his wing and trains him as his partner. But he made him a promise: that he would rescue his wife from a plantation owned by the ruthless Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). And rescuing her is not going to be all that easy. What pains me the most about Django Unchained, as a die-hard Tarantino fan, is just how sloppy it all seems. I enjoyed every minute of it, but I could never shake the feeling of how messy and thrown together it all feels. Portions of the film feel episodic (the search for the Brittle Brothers, mentioned heavily in the trailers, begins and ends practically within minutes), and some scenes just seem to play out just for the fun of it. Another scene from the trailers involving a lynch mob with bags covering their faces seems added for comedic purposes, and has no real point of actually existing. More than any of his films before it, Django feels like Tarantino simply making a movie for sheer pleasure and with no outside motivations or controllers. The film threatens to go totally off the rails at any given moment, and lacks any real sense of direction or focus. It may sound ridiculous, but the loss of editor Sally Menke confirms a sneaking suspicion I always had about Tarantino – he needed a steady right hand to help encourage him as to what was needed and what was not. I do not want to criticize Django’s editor Fred Raskin, but it is obvious he is no Menke and that works against the film heavily. It lacks the polish we have come to expect, and is practically stripped of the glossy/cool texture so prevalent in Tarantino’s work up until now. But then maybe that was his intention all along, and perhaps Tarantino is airing out his frustrations with life and film in general. Django is deliberately shot on film (or at least from the print I saw), and looks very gritty and messy at all times. It is significantly more brutally violent than anything he has worked on before (the borderline cartoonish Kill Bill included), and has a very go for broke attitude about itself. The film seems to revel in how brilliantly it can splatter all the blood and gore (done through the use of squibs and no digital!), and how uncomfortably numbing it can make the violence. I know he does not care what people think of his films, but this movie especially seems like an emphatically raised middle finger to the establishment. And for all of my complaints about how messy it all feels, I was never once bored or felt like the movie was dragging itself out. The staggering 165-minute running time shockingly flies by faster than you might ever imagine. Acting wise, Tarantino stacks the deck with a number of recognizable character actors young and old for roles that vary in size. Most have very few lines, if any at all, and seem to just stand by, just as content as the audience is to watch the action unfold. It is a little off-putting, especially with how important some of these characters are initially made out to be. Washington as Broomhilda von Shaft (one of the most subtle references he’s ever dropped) does well as the helpless victim and frequent dreamlike object – but she never really gets to show off any of her acting prowess outside of her facial reactions. They are increasingly effective, especially during horrific flashback scenes. But her work here feels ridiculously stunted in comparison to the other leads. Samuel L. Jackson, much like Tarantino himself, seems to just be having fun in his role as Candie’s adviser Stephen. He plays on every ridiculous stereotype he ever has been associated with and then amps it up to a near ludicrous state. He is frequently hilarious, but the role seems to border on parody more than anything else. Surprisingly, Foxx takes a very long time settling into the leading role. It may just be the character, but it is quite clear from the on- set that he is not very comfortable in Django’s shoes, and leads credence to why Will Smith, amongst so many others, dropped out of the picture so quickly. But once he finds his footing, he does a fantastic job walking the thin line between empathetic and sadistic. It is not an easy character to play, but Foxx makes it his own, bringing a sense of style and grace that are virtually absent from the rest of the film. And of course, he gets all the best lines. Waltz and DiCaprio are the clear standouts however, nailing every nuance of their sadly underwritten characters. While Waltz plays the straight man, DiCaprio is delightfully unhinged and vicious. Both are playing directly against type, yet are strangely comfortable in the roles. Watching them act circles around the rest of the cast, Foxx included, is the true highlight of the film. I just wish they were both given additional emphasis and more to do. For all of its numerous faults, I had a blast watching Django Unchained. It is hilarious, it is a lot of fun, and is wildly enjoyable. I genuinely think it could have been a lot better if there was more focus and direction, but this is very clearly a picture Tarantino wanted to make on his own terms. And for that, I applaud him for the effort. It is not his best work, but certainly not his worst. 8/10.

If war is a drug, then apparently so, too, is counter-terrorism. While this theme isn’t literally splashed across the screen in the same manner The Hurt Locker set up the recurring point about its protagonist, Zero Dark Thirty portrays a CIA agent every bit as consumed by her mission as the former’s bomb disposal expert. And once again, the mission that has crept its way into both heart and soul involves keeping ticking bombs from blowing up in one way or another. Director Kathryn Bigelow, whose The Hurt Locker won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, tells us the story of the multi-year, global hunt for Osama bin Laden, seen through the eyes of CIA analyst Maya. Maya, portrayed by Jessica Chastain in the performance I believe will win her the Oscar for Best Actress, was recruited right out of high school and has spent her career — indeed, her entire adult life — pursuing bin Laden. She knows nothing else, she does nothing else, and so she attacks her task relentlessly, constantly working herself into unpredictable outbursts amid an otherwise calmly calculating aggression. And that sums up the entire film’s pursuit of its narrative. It maintains a tension pulling the viewers’ nerves tighter and tighter as the aggression boils just under the surface, waiting to erupt in unpredictably violent moments. It bears down on you with a pace that will leave you exhausted, until you walk out at the end realizing the muscles in your neck and back are corded and strained, and you’re emotionally spent without any clear sense of precisely what the emotions are, because they come quickly and often painfully, yet the film never tells you how to feel. I think it’s one of the director’s intentions that by the end, all of that wound up tension and mental exhaustion and uncertainty will give you a sense of what it must’ve felt like for Maya, probably every moment of her life. So you aren’t a casual observer, even while the movie presents the story in a very matter-of-fact manner that’s meant to avoid any clear stance on any of the issues involved. It might try toward objectivity, but dispassion? Never. It reminds me quite a lot of All the President’s Men, for the hyper realism of detailed portrayals of what went on behind the scenes in the data gathering and examination, in the search for leads and people with any helpful information, and in the constant confrontations with bosses and other workers whose own agendas and motivations conflicted or caused them to doubt one another’s conclusions and even the point of the whole exercise. However, regardless of the similarities to films of the past or times gone by, this is most of all a film of its era. For a decade we have been at war, a war supposedly launched to find and punish Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda for the attacks of September 11, 2001. We searched and tried to capture or kill bin Laden, until it proved hard enough that it became easier to pretend he didn’t matter after all — despite the fact we invaded Afghanistan supposedly because they refused to hand him over. For several years, he was like a ghost, seemingly forgotten, as the war turned in a new direction and we began to face the ugly revelations about torture and mass civilian casualties. Over time, any hope of a definitive end to the wars or to the fear or to the controversies was lost. And then came rumors, followed quickly by confirmation, that Osama bin Laden had been found and killed. The man we’d turned into a mythical monster, only to transform him later into an irrelevant missing person, was gone. Screenwriter Mark Boal also deserves praise for not overtelling his story, for trusting that the power of its meaning is deeper and depends on audiences to see the events and understand the narrative instinctively. This is easily Bigelow’s and Boal’s best work to date, which is saying a lot. But this will undoubtedly make the film difficult to watch for many viewers. The pace and tension alone is already brutal, as are the torture sequences that go into graphic detail, and several killings are shown up close in all their bloody detail. It’s hard to watch but you’ll have a more difficult time looking away from the screen. This is the best picture of 2012 — and the most memorable. In my opinion.

Saw JACK REACHER on Monday night at an advance screening. Here’s some of my thoughts. There are no spoilers. First off, I’d say I agree with the general critical reception: 4/5 stars. To me that means it’s a solid movie that delivers at the high end of its genre. JACK REACHER isn’t trying to be anything revolutionary, it’s more the kind of action thriller audiences haven’t seen for a while. This isn’t MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE or even James Bond. Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie takes his inspiration from action movies of the late 60s/early 70s like DIRTY HARRY (which has been name checked in a couple reviews already), BULLITT (for the car chase); and maybe another Don Siegel movie, CHARLEY VARRICK. The excitement here doesn’t come from over the top stunts or huge explosions. Like the action movies just referenced, you thrill to watching a strongly defined protagonist outsmart, outfight and outmaneuver the bad guys. Which brings me to the character of Jack Reacher and the casting of Tom Cruise. In the series of novels by Lee Child this movie is based on, Jack Reacher is an ex-MP detective. After a lifetime spent on military bases overseas, he lives as a drifter in the United States who adheres to a life of zero commitments: No house, no job, no car, no possessions, no family. Oh, and he stands 6′5″ and weighs 250 lbs. Clearly Tom Cruise doesn’t match that physical description. What makes Reacher such a great character in Child’s books though has far less to do with his exterior than it does with his intellect. If you’ve read the series as I have, it’s a little strange at first. As the film played out however, I got more relaxed and more into it. This was definitely a movie about Lee Child’s hero Jack Reacher, physical differences be damned. Would I have preferred an unknown actor closer to Child’s description to play Reacher on screen? Yes, of course. But I could say that about virtually any character, and often do. I generally want unknowns for everything. Which is where Cruise’s casting comes in handy a bit. Because his casting sort of guarantees a certain amount of box office, it means the filmmakers can take more chances. Like crafting an action movie that’s longer on character and occasional brutal violence and short on mindless action and impossible nonsense. JACK REACHER was a very satisfying action thriller for me. I felt it captured what I love about Lee Child’s thrillers and Jack Reacher in particular. I’d definitely recommend it, and I’m going to see it in the theater again. That’s for damn sure.

Wow doesn’t even begin to describe the perfection and quality of this pure horror slasher flick. Not only does this contain all of the action, gore, violence, and creativity in death that could please even the most high-set horror film fanatic, but has the horror, suspense, thrills, and a very high content of twists. The opening scene will become an instant icon full of gore and violence to keep you having night terrors for years to come, and it doesn’t stop. Having the same characters return that you would hope for, they also have a very definitive cast full of talent and chills. Everything about this movie kept you on the edge of your seat, or covering your eyes. Being written by the writers of many of the SAW movies, you’d expect some “fun”(I might say) deaths. But never, even in SAW, have there been such gruesome or horrific death or scenes of torture. You’ll ooh, and aah. You’ll scream and boo. You’ll clap and scream. Pretty much most of the slasher flicks are pretty predictable in every sense of the word, but not this one. The Collection kept you guessing, and usually wrong. Like the first one, getting the cops works when they try and isn’t against logic making you say, it’s a hotel, why is there no service. The end, as well, is the best ending of any movie, of any genre, yet. A ton of twists, and one moment in the last seconds before the credits just made your jaw drop and your hands start clapping whether you want or not. All in all, this movie redefines the genre, forever. Not one thing in this is taken from another movie, and is all original, along with terrific special effects and new elements to the entertainment industry. In no way did this look low budget, and had amazing camera use and the kills looked pure. You’ll feel like you need to watch your back as you watch and forget about reality. This is worth the ticket price, and the drinks and popcorn that is bound to fly out of your hands at the jumpy and perfectly planned moments. The best advice I can give you: SEE THIS MOVIE. IT’S WORTH IT. Best movie in, well… ever.

The only good thing about Skyfail, is the new Coke add before the movie. For the sake of not repeating what has been said before, let me simply state the following, what is James Bond? In my mind he’s suppose to be “The Man”, a slick, suave, highly trained, highly skilled, Secret Agent from Mi6, who with the aid of a really cool “never been seen before” gadget from the ever comical Q, defeats the enemy or at least makes their lives difficult. An agent who always accomplishes his goal, with a fair bit of womanizing on the side, funny one liners and super exciting expeditions etc. In short he is the guy every man wants to be and every woman can’t resist. In this installment he literally fails at every single task assigned to him, he loses the list, gets shot, has depression, turns into a drunk whilst AWOL, comes back, fails all the training tests assigned to him scoring 40%. Then Fails to protect/keep alive the only girl worth mentioning in the movie. Then he captures only to lose again the baddie (Who is a Spanish or is it Mexican ex Mi6 agent, how does that happen?) in broad daylight, then he barely gets M away to his “fortress” family home in Scotland, where there’s only a single Scottish (With out an accent of any kind) gamekeeper with one gun, where he fails to keep M alive (Great choice), the only thing he accomplishes all movie long is to kill the baddie, with an knife after not sustaining hypothermia some how, who was already trying to kill himself, so no points scored there. Does this sound like our British secret agent hero? As technology move forward into a TRON like age, Bond and Q moves into the 50’s. The best you can do is a gun with 3 LED lights and a radio the size of a small cellphone? The radio was invented in the 1800’s pal. It feels like this movie was shot in the 50s with a 70 year old director and his 32 year old daughter smitten with twilight, having said that Twilight was better, much better! The movie ends with bond being assigned a new mission, from the new M. M must be thinking “Now this is exactly the type of guy I want protecting our country, the guy who’s getting old, can’t shoot straight, has issues, is an alcoholic, poses way too much, has no skills other than running through walls, and the uncanny ability not to die, and to boot killed my predecessor . . .” The only thing Secret about Bond is how on earth it managed to get its rating, at time of this writing its 8.1, did they pay 100 000 people off to go vote? Without a doubt the WORST BOND YET!

The sea of bad reviews has turned on Red Dawn and as far as I can tell it is full of some empty criticisms. Most of them sink within a moment’s thought. It is as if they were paid to write negative conclusions about every single thing that happened on screen. Maybe the director or one of the actors wronged them in some way and this their way of exacting some revenge. The simple fact is that what they say doesn’t reflect what is projected on the screen. Like spotty camera work. Sorry didn’t happen. And don’t they possess a modicum of disbelief? All matter of strange and bizarre events have taken place in a movie theater. Does the premise of the United States being occupied by foreign powers – meaning more than one – exceed these limits that have historical been extremely laid-back? Once clear of these little hiccups there is no turning back. The writing is engaging and at times really moving with a cast of characters that carry the action and drama to a degree that can be believed. From the vehicles, to the number of extras, and explosions it is clear that a great deal of expense went into the production. It would be a shame that a bunch of uppity hecklers would steer away a movie goer looking for a film that delivers PG-13 level action with some nice twists and turns, mixed in with a fair amount of drama and a little humor. If I were more cynical I might conclude that these naysayers just cannot stand Americans fighting for their county. I am reminded of Act of Valor (2012) and how it was also riddled full of holes as well with dubious reasons. If you can stomach patriotism perhaps you will enjoy this movie otherwise you might be forced to regurgitate your findings into a lackluster falling star review.

This film was fantastic. I loved the first film and it was a surprise breakout hit of the year. So when I heard a sequel was coming, I was there for the first showing in my local cinema. As a sequel – it did have a problem of trying to put these ordinary characters into an impossible situation yet again. The first time you could imagine the circumstances behind the kidnapping and relate to the idea that this happens in the real world and it was spot-lighting a true tragedy in the world today. As a sequel, it couldn’t repeat any of that without it looking copied or forced into the plot. The writers had to find a way of bringing the same cast back while tying it into the events of the last film somehow. While they did this superbly, it has to be said that the ‘this might happen to your daughter’ angle that the first film gave is not present in this film. This is more of an action driven showcase which is about the world these characters have created for themselves, not one they have been thrust into. I was fine with this as it’s a sequel – but some of the other reviewers on this site appear to have wanted a complete remake of the original – which this is most definitely not. It takes the elements that made the original outstanding and tries to build something new with them – which I applaud tremendously. The use of intelligent spy work is still present. The mixed fighting styles, gun fights, car chases etc all still there making this a great film. The only thing really missing was the tying up of the mum / dad getting back together storyline that they started at the beginning but abandoned when it could have been acknowledged with a simply kiss at the very end of the film. Because the first film showed us a new form of crime on the big screen that had not been explored before, and a whole criminal empire with a brand new action super spy to play with, it will forever be the best in the series – no matter how many sequels they make. But this film stands firmly up there with it as one of the best films of its year and you can be sure I will be first in line for the third film also when they undoubtedly make that also. This film is already in my top 10 of favourite films of all time and I thank everyone who had a hand in making it a success.

I would have thought it doubtful that anyone could have anything new to add to the sci-fi sub category of time travel movies. After watching Looper yesterday, i’m happy to report that Rian Johnson has removed those doubts and given me hope that sci-fi in Hollywood can be more than just empty spectacle. First off i would say, don’t get discouraged from watching the film if you think its going to be too complex or difficult to follow. To follow the story and recognise characters motivations does require a little concentration, but not to the point that you wont enjoy the action beats and other more visceral elements. The story is well constructed, information and plot points are presented at an entertaining and well judged pace. There are some nice little throw away visual references and metaphors which, if you catch them, add a nice texture to the story and stop it feeling too clinical in its plotting. The script is tight, hard edged and very dry in its humour, the actors are fantastic. I think its fair to say that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is well on his way to being “one to watch”, Bruce Willis pops back to life here, clearly enjoying himself again, (although i wouldn’t say this is solely a Bruce Willis movie in that definition). This is a brilliant movie experience, its an wholly original and entertaining idea, that the writer/director has managed to successfully transpose to film without, it would appear to a layman, pressure or interference from external sources. No matter how much of a good time you will have watching this film (and you will), Hollywood could stand to learn much more from it.

The basic aim of Dredd is simple – it needs to be bold, true to the source material and full of juicy violence, enough to wipe out the memories of the notoriously poor Stallone attempt of 1995 that threw plenty of money at the screen without bothering to work on anything resembling a decent script. The character of Judge Dredd, now entering his 35th year in UK comic 2000AD (they know it’s 2012 – don’t ask), isn’t a complicated one. He is, as he is fond of stating, the law. The time is the future, and amidst the wasteland that is America there is a single, massive city with 800 million inhabitants, appropriately called Mega City One. It’s quite the scumhole, and the only thing that stands between it and total chaos are the Judges, trained for years to be the ultimate in law enforcement, yet so outnumbered they can only handle 6% of the crimes committed. This, people, is as thin as the blue line gets. The film is written by long time fan Alex Garland (28 Days later, Sunshine), and has had plenty of input from Dredd’s creator (and still main writer even now) John Wagner. Filmed in South Africa on what passes for a tight budget these days (especially for Sci-Fi), it could be compared to District 9 in terms of the sheer effort put into it, with a result that is similarly impressive although aesthetically miles apart. Director Pete Travis (Endgame) does an excellent job, and between them they have turned in a film that will stand the test of time as a superior, adult action movie. The premise is reasonably simple, something that works well as an introduction to what is, in the comics at least, a sprawling future world. Dredd is accompanied on patrol by rookie Judge Anderson, very well played by Olivia Thirlby, who is on the verge of failing her final assessment but is being given a second chance because of her powerful, and rare, psi abilities. A routine triple homicide (it’s that sort of city) turns into a siege when they are trapped in a massive tower block by criminal nutjob Ma Ma (Lena Headey) and forced to fight their way out and stop her manufacturing the addictive new drug, Slo Mo. Obviously there’s a bit more to it than that, but this is the basic set up and it works very well indeed, allowing for plenty of violence, some character development and no few explosions. I can’t write this review without focusing on Karl Urban, who has previously stood out for his excellent turn as Dr McCoy in the Star Trek revival. Not afraid to go through an entire movie with a helmet on, he is spot on as Dredd. He gives us an emotionless machine, a man who cares for nothing but the law, but a man you want to get behind and cheer on as he splats bad guys left right and centre. The humanity comes from Anderson, and it helps that Thirlby doesn’t have to wear a helmet herself, with the handy excuse that it interferes with her psi abilities. Between them they give us the tired old wardog and the 21 year old rookie on the streets for the first time, and you sympathise with the life of a Mega City Judge. Some people have criticized the apparent similarities between Dredd and the recent film The Raid: Redemption, in which Indonesian cops storm a tower block and much chop sockey ensues. To be honest, I was a little worried myself, but having seen both films I can happily confirm that they are nothing alike. Whilst The Raid is a pretty intense martial arts film which is rather dull between fights (although the fights are awesome), Dredd is a tight film all the way through, with the plot more than an excuse to go from fight to fight. In conclusion, I can heartily recommend this film, in case you hadn’t guessed. It’s sort of like a cross between Robocop and Die Hard, all moderned up and with better music. It’s no coincidence that those are two of the most kick ass action films ever, and Dredd borrows from the best, although as Robocop stole from Dredd in the first place it’s more like recovering pinched property. The 3D is actually worth shelling out for, and there are some beautiful sequences where it comes into it’s own, whilst the film itself is gritty and dirty, although not without a few lighter moments amidst the carnage. The humour in Dredd’s comic strips comes from the city around him rather than his own actions, and here’s hoping we’ll see Alex Garland penning a sequel that allows us to wander through Dredd’s world. Quite simply a superior action film, and whilst it’s no masterpiece (then again, it’s not supposed to be) it’s as good as fans could ever have hoped. Here’s to the sequels…

Until this point, for all intents and purposes I hadn’t seen any of Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil films (I think I saw the first, but don’t remember it at all. Were there scary dogs in it?). Entering into a franchise at the fifth installment is probably not the best strategy, but so it was that I found myself sitting down for Resident Evil: Retribution, not entirely sure what to expect. I played a few of the games as a teenager, but again, nothing has really stuck with me. So, how does the movie fare with (essentially) a newcomer such as myself? Not well. Not well at all. Thankfully (or so I thought), Anderson opens the film with a lengthy sequence bringing viewers up to speed with the story so far, and surprisingly it seems that the Resident Evil film series has all but evolved past being about zombies. There are a few sequences involving the undead in Retribution, but the real antagonist here is a malevolent artificial intelligence, the Red Queen, who controls the central computer system of the nefarious Umbrella Corporation. Early on the film is actually pretty fun, and shows potential. Our heroine Alice (Milla Jovovich) finds herself in an Umbrella testing facility, where the Red Queen runs simulations to see how the company’s biological weapons affect various cities around the globe. Jovovich, perhaps the only thing holding this series together, fights her way through the Tokyo simulation, culminating in a highly entertaining hallway battle with a dozen zombies. Unfortunately, it’s at this point that Anderson drops Alice into the real story, which I can only assume is continuing from the previous films, as I really didn’t understand or care what was happening. As a stand-alone film, Retribution simply doesn’t do enough for first-time viewers. What little structure the narrative has never really builds to anything, and it’s more or less one long gunfight with an inexplicable rescue mission mixed in. Aside from Jovovich, the acting is atrocious across the board, with particularly shoddy work from Sienna Guillory and Bingbing Li. The performances, and Anderson’s direction, are appropriately on par with that of a bad video game cut-scene, and get so bad at times that it almost seems intentional. Resident Evil: Retribution is not a film for new audiences but for die-hard followers of the franchise, although it’s difficult to imagine even the most ardent fans finding much to enjoy here. Jovovich looks terrific and delivers the necessary butt-kicking, but that’s really all there is to enjoy. Judging by the conclusion, the inevitable sixth film is probably going to be the last, although so little happens in Retribution that Anderson perhaps should have skipped this story all together and moved on the finish Alice’s story sooner. Side note: I’m no fan of 3-D, but surprisingly Anderson seems to be unafraid to have fun with the format. Although the film suffers from some of the worst light-loss (one of the biggest arguments against 3-D) I can remember, Anderson grabs the gimmick with both hands and is clearly having a blast throwing bullets, axes, and gallons of blood at the audience. The native 3- D (not post-converted) actually makes a difference, and if you must see this movie, then shelling out the extra couple of bucks might be worth it.

First off, yes, much better than the first…. thank god, more locations, funnier and better put together. No time from opening credits, its straight into the action, which is more epic imo, and is what should have been seen in the first film but maybe due to a low budget we were subjected to a lesser affair The team work well, all of them and Hemsworth does really well as the new boy on the block and second time round and you kind of know these guys. Arnie, bruce are seen more but are not seen as much as the usual gang, and li is seen the least. Norris is great, seen here and there, great entrance and more of a cameo, and van damme makes good his role as the villain. The story pretty much straight forward, better than the first, but nothing special, some dialogue was hard to hear, and sly does try to be serious in some scenes which got a laugh and I don’t think its how it was intended but its not that much of a big deal really as there are funny moments in the film, more so than the first film. Fight scenes were better this time round, not too prolonged, timed well, and the one on ones didn’t drag on too long. Sly & van damme’s fight could have been a bit longer but I guess after all the chaos leading up to that point it was sufficient enough without getting too silly, reminded me of a Rocky fight here and there….he he One liners were good, dolph was great, the girl is good also, be good to see her in exp3, locations and sets fab, cgi was not obvious and edited well. One thing I will say is sly does have issues coming across as funny and I don’t know why. He’s funny in real life and was funny in rocky but its hit and miss and it shows here in some scenes. Its not 10/10 in my book. Maybe when i see it again it may be better in my mind, but like i say a better story would of helped If there is a 3rd, I would like to see more of a story if that is at all possible, see what you think guys when its out, but it’s a big improvement on the first and that’s a good sign

This is truly a case of great actors who are left out there in the cold by a director, who essentially does not even try to respect them and the audience’s intelligence by giving them something original or interesting. Tony Gilroy had written not only the first three Bourne films but the great Michael Clayton as well but here, it is obvious that he is on a destructive ego trip. Gilroy is more interested in making people see on how smart he is as a scriptwriter and filmmaker than actually try to entertain and stay true to what made the other Bourne films special. With that destructive mind set, Gilroy forgets that you need faith in your actors and the material they are working with in order to drive the movie forward. Gilroy also commits the biggest sin of all, which is to never underestimate the intelligence of your audience. The script by Gilroy and his brother Dan tries to be cutting edge in scientific jargon and smart dialog but ends up with so many inconsistencies and flimsy characterization that you have to double back twice to see if Gilroy actually had a hand in the original “Bourne Trilogy”. The characters in this film are only there to get from A to B and none of them with the exception of Rachel Weisz and Jeremy Renner (Who you can clearly see are both working beyond the call of duty to make something out of their paper-thin roles) has any real purpose at all. Poor Edward Norton is only there to bark orders and you can clearly see how frustrated he is with his role in certain scenes. The direction is not even very good, with pacing problems and a running time that excessively too long for its own good. The action scenes (The few of them in the film) do not jar well and are boring to say the least. My advice to Universal, if there has to be a sequel, bring back Rachel Weisz and Jeremy Renner (Who both deserve medals for their efforts in making this lazy, self indulgent script work) and get rid of Tony Gilroy, who clearly does not respect anybody other than himself. You might have a better movie if you do.

Christopher Nolan has outdone himself with this one. At 3.30 in the morning, I was tired. Just getting out of it, I’ve never been so awake. Perhaps what set this film apart from his other films was that it had a genuine emotional heartbeat. I felt that this was a flaw of Nolan’s other films – the vision of emotion was there, but it was hollow. In this I bought it. I felt it, hero and villain alike. Christian Bale was typically brilliant as Batman, and I felt that Bruce Wayne was more heavily embraced in this final installment. Bale added emotional depth to the character – a plot point that I think went astray in The Dark Knight – picking up from the development made in Batman Begins. Tom Hardy as Bane was quite simply, terrifying. No longer a dunderhead “enforcer”, but one of the criminal masterminds behind “Gotham’s Reckoning”, coupled with a physical dominance strong enough to send shivers down your spine. Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle defied my expectations. Hands up who was not entirely convinced that that girl from the Princess Diaries could handle an intensely physical role like Catwoman. But here I am, hugely impressed. She added immeasurably to the value of the film. Marion Cotillard fulfilled the role of Miranda Tate admirably, though I suspect this was the most underdeveloped character of the film – though after watching, I can see why. The unsung hero of The Dark Knight Rises is Michael Caine as Alfred. A heartfelt performance that helps drive the emotional content of the film, helping Nolan sell his most well-rounded film to date. Caine’s performance in both presence and absence. Special mention goes to Joseph Gordon Levitt, who is consistently proving himself to be a big player in the Hollywood game. His role as officer Blake felt like there could’ve been more, but it may just have come all a bit much. It was a great performance, and Levitt sunk his teeth into role. If you can, go see this in IMAX. If any film was to sell the format to skeptics, The Dark Knight Rises would be IT. I’m happy Nolan stuck to his guns and shot in 2D. 3D would have been unnecessary. I suppose at this point, I have to turn my focus on Nolan. If he ever reads this… aspiring filmmaker to filmmaker, I’ve never been so envious, jealous in all my life. It’s a film that leaves me floundering, wondering what I could possibly do to get anywhere near this ballpark. Well done. I think an Oscar Nomination is in order. From here, I’m not sure what to expect of the future. Does our imagination carry us forward, or do the studios? Time will tell.
