This film is certainly an outstanding visual spectacle that boasts some of the most impressive, fluid and stunning cgi sequences I’ve ever seen. The photography is fantastic and the 3d technology is used effectively to create stunning, visually amazing scenes. However, that is the only aspect of the film that I believe deserves merit at all. Despite the continuous action, destruction and battles, I found this film to be extremely boring, and the final battle, which claimed the last hour of the film was far too long and drawn out and it greatly prevented me from appreciating the visual spectacle that is the final battle as it’s so long it becomes tedious and I couldn’t wait for it to end. The extensive use of cgi action scenes was what ruined the film for me, and although I never fully agree with the typical view that modern films have too much cgi and effects and not enough good story, this film certainly presented a convincing case that the above statement is true. As there is so much shooting, exploding and fighting in this film there is relatively little time for dialogue, which was largely, poorly written, and full of clichés. Finally, I didn’t rate the casting of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley or her performance. She has clearly been chosen for the role for her good looks and her great sex appeal although I think she shines brighter as an underwear model than blockbuster film actress. Also, It seems unbelievable to me that Shia LaBeouf’s character, although not a bad looking guy, has been in relationships with 2 characters played by women who have both topped the annual FHM 100 sexiest women in the world poll. Rosie has clearly been cast to attract more male viewers, bring sex appeal that the film didn’t really need and throughout struck me as being far out of Shia’s league.

I was fortunate to know some friends that own a movie theater here in Texas that allowed me to come and preview the Green Lantern reel with them last night at their movie theater. I will say up front I am a Green Lantern fan and a fan of comic book movies. With that said I am more than willing to point out flaws in a movie and even trash a movie I hoped would be good and it was not. What makes this movie great? 1.) The CGI effects for this movie are way better than I even imagined they would be. I was one of those that were scared about the CGI because the first teaser trailer was absolute crap. After seeing the movie I was blown away by the CGI, and if anyone says that it is crap they are just being a troll bottom line. 2.) The overall story is fantastic. Changes have been made from the comic’s lore such as what happens to Sinestro, but they were easily acceptable and I did not have any problems with the changes. 3.) The movie is action packed from beginning to end. I tend to judge the quality of the movie by whether I checked my watch during the movie. I did not do that once. It is well paced and I did not feel it dragged at all. The first 10-12 minutes absolutely hook you into the movie and it does not slow down from there. 4.) When the audience is finally taken to OA for the first time it is just awesome! The creators of this movie did an amazing job of opening the audience up to an all new world and universe. This is where the movie stands out in my opinion. You really do get pulled into the whole idea of the Green Lantern Corps and OA, and I wish more of the movie could have been on OA. 5.) Ryan Reynolds is a fantastic Green Lantern. I had my reservations at first but this is a great example of the Michael Keaton affect. I remember when Batman 1989 was coming out people were up in arms when they found out Mr. Mom/Beetlejuice was Batman, but once they saw the movie he was instantly accepted. I think it will be the same thing here with Ryan Reynolds. By the end of the movie I could not imagine anyone else as Hal Jordan. The transformation of cocky test pilot to hero is great. I give Ryan Reynolds and Martin Campbell real props for Hal’s characterization. 6.) HOLY COW IS MARK STRONG AWESOME AS SINESTRO. As great as I felt Ryan Reynolds was as Hal Jordan, I think we have another Jack Nicholson/Joker thing here. In Batman 1989 Jack’s Joker in many ways overshadowed Keaton’s Batman, and Strong’s Sinestro almost does that. He was the absolute best choice for Sinestro, and he did a great job as that character. That is all I have to say about that topic because he was that good. 7.) The 3D is fantastic. It is clear that it was shot in 3D because it was amazing the whole time. I have seen a lot of 3D movies since Avatar, and this is one of the best ones that I have seen. I highly recommend seeing Green Lantern in 3D especially if you only plan on seeing it one time in the theaters. I believe the 3D really added to the entire experience. 8.) The costume is a lot better in the movie than I imagined it would be. To see the power of the ring manifest itself into the costume was brilliant. The trailers did NOT do a good job capturing that I felt, and I loved the costume…from the knees up. The problems with Green Lantern: 1.) Blake Lively. I knew when I heard she was being cast as Carol Ferris the movie was in trouble in that department. She is absolutely beautiful there is no question about that, but her performance is comparable to Denise Richards in James Bond’s The World’s Not Enough. I am not going to say it was God-awful but let’s just say she was definitely cast in that role as eye candy, and to maybe bring in her Gossip girls audience. I don’t know. 2.) The dialog is not bad by any means (especially compared to other comic book movies), but it is not the strong point. Does it hold the movie back…no I do not think so, but as I said at the beginning of my review I wanted to be honest here. 3.) The costume is great and I enjoyed seeing the ring’s power manifest itself through the costume, but the mask and the eyes bothered me. I could not stand his feet. Looked like skeleton feet and that just looked bad. Not a big deal I think but it will distract you when you see it. I felt the mask should have just whited out his eyes completely. The little black beedy eye was weird. In conclusion, Green Lantern is the best comic book movie of 2011, and one of the best movies of the year IMHO. It introduces us to an amazing universe, has great supporting characters (minus Blake Lively), and leaves you wanting more with promises of that (ending is great and wide open for some more). I feel it was definitely better than Thor, and for what it offers as an overall package better than X-Men: First Class. It has huge appeal to all audiences, and to be honest I think this could be one of the softer PG-13 movies I have ever seen. I would not be afraid to take older kids to see this movie at all. I think kids will love this movie, the ladies will love this movie, and the comic book nerds will absolutely love this movie.

There came a point, about half way through this film, when I emerged from the world of wonder on screen, took stock of my emotions in that instant, and realized that yes, by God, I am LOVING this movie. I didn’t really expect to, of course — although certainly, I hoped for it. With such an incredible cast, an able director at the helm, a story of Bryan Singer provenance and the inclusion of some of my favorite, if lesser known, X-types (Darwin! Tempest! Havok!), I was eager to see this beloved band of merry Marvel mutants redeem themselves after the massive failures of X3 and X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. Which they do. And how! One thing that the avid comic fan must do when approaching this movie, however, is to divorce themselves utterly from almost all established four-color X-Men continuity. Oh, some bears up, but by and large this is a whole new origin story, a reboot of epic proportions, and yet it is a retcon so cleverly done, and one that offers up a such a delicious mélange of complex relationships and sensible motivation, that all of the many discrepancies inherent in having Mystique on the side of good or having Moira McTaggert a CIA agent simply do not matter. Speaking of McTaggert, Rose Byrne is both comely and convincing in the role, and almost every other actor is perfectly, one might almost say forcefully, cast. McAvoy brings a kind of laddish charm to Charles Xavier that he mixes nicely with both decency and naïveté, and Michael Fassbender’s nascent Magneto is relentlessly, even heart-breakingly, compelling. Their chemistry is electric — theirs’ is one of the most multi-faceted and sincere bromances the screen has seen in a good long while. The younger cast all impress, though particular praise must go to Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence as the petulant but pitiable Raven/Mystique (The Academy Awards have been good to young, hot X-chicks; let us not forget that Rogue herself, Anna Paquin, won for THE PIANO). Former child star Nicholas Hoult is also outstanding as the troubled Hank McCoy, and perhaps the most surprising kudos must go to teenage dream Lucas Till, who conveys the particular anti-social asshole-hood of the turbulent Alex Summers very convincingly indeed. The biggest letdown in the movie, acting-wise, is January Jones as Emma Frost. True, she is appropriately ravishing, there can be no denying that, but she lacks the… the zing of the written character. There is very little intelligence, snark, or even personality behind her interpretation of this most intriguing of mutants; she’s just kind of Stand There and Look Pretty — which, for one playing Emma Frost, is something a travesty. The only other weight under which this movie really labors is the fact that it is a prequel, and it therefore suffers from the feeling of inevitability that besets all such endeavors. Anakin Skywalker HAS to go Dark Side. Bilbo Baggins HAS to find the One Ring. And Magneto HAS to turn against humans; Mystique HAS to join him; Xavier HAS to end up in a wheelchair. With these definite plot developments looming, their eventuation is bound to be a bit of an anti-climax. And yet the fun part about X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is the journey it takes us on to get us there. Offering up plenty of surprises, some kickass action sequences, mighty fine special effects, sly humor and a killer cameo, it is without doubt the best comic book movie of the year – nay, decade – thus far. And considering how overcrowded that list is, this is really saying Something. Huh. A prequel that does not, in any way, suck. Amazing, isn’t it?

My biggest fear about sequels is it’s gonna end up pretty bad and ruin the first one. But I remember, Dreamworks already understand how to make a true good animated movie so I don’t have to worry. Now the sequel just got more awesome. Non-stop action and non-stop laughs. The heart is also there. “Kung Fu Panda 2″ is just as good as the first one. The trailer makes us dubious but this is Dreamworks. Anyways, “Kung Fu Panda 2″ is a great continuation of the series. The story still has a heart and some scenes can almost move you to tears. The movie has bigger and more Kung Fu action & yes, the action never stops. It’s all kick butt action. I like it how they improved the editing. Remember Megamind, It feels like you were flying in every flying sequences. They did the same thing in “Kung Fu Panda 2″. Fast Moving Action that it’s fun to see it even if it’s in 2D. I don’t really bash 3D though. The jokes are obviously everywhere. Even in serious scenes it suddenly has humor. The new comers from the cast did a great job. Gary Oldman is definitely good at being a villain in movies even if it’s animated. Michelle Yeoh made her character likable. Jean-Claude Van Damme is awesome even though his scenes were few. This movie still has the same style from the first movie. Magnificent flash animation in the intro, flashbacks, and the dream sequence. Nice music score. And a lot more. I just said this movie is as good as the first movie but if I had to pick which Kung Fu Panda movie is better then it would be the first one. It’s more heartwarming but Kung Fu Panda 2 is already good enough as a sequel because it’s bigger and too awesome. Unfortunately, It’s too awesome it moderates the depth a little bit but it’s entertaining at its best. To be honest, this could be the best movie of the summer so far.

I would like to begin by saying that I very rarely review films anymore, but after reading many reviews for this film by various critics I felt compelled to give my own verdict. Purely because every review I have read has been unnecessarily venomous, and simply seemed to trash the film and its two predecessors at every given opportunity. I am a fan of the Pirates trilogy, the original is by far the best, and three may have some problems with its convoluted storyline, but there is nothing wrong with Dead Man’s Chest and as a trilogy they all worked very well. This fourth instalment like the others is great fun, the storyline may not be Oscar worthy stuff but neither was the storyline in the others. It is an entertaining fantasy flick that you can sit back, relax and enjoy. The idea that Johnny Depp has become bored of the character of Jack Sparrow and plays him in this film as a shadow of his former self, is simply ludicrous. Depp is on top form in this movie, brilliant for me considering following the awful performance in Alice in Wonderland I had begun doubting him somewhat. On Stranger Tides is easily the best movie since the original, and I would be more than happy to sit through another two films. Now onto the performances. As previously mentioned Depp is simply outstanding as Jack Sparrow. By putting him to the forefront means we get to spend more time with him, though thankfully the writers hold back on having him on screen too much. His one liners, especially one involving a Spanish Convent had me in stitches. His relationship with Angelica (Penelope Cruz) really adds that extra bit of spice to the film. It also helps that Cruz and Depp have outstanding chemistry together. While the character of Angelica can be a bit complicated at times, her motives are vague at best, this can be overshadowed by the fact Cruz plays her with some real gusto. Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa for me really stole the show, and it seems the writers gave him quite a bit more storyline this time as well. The idea of moving him to the kings navy really played off, and his scenes for me were definitely a highlight of the film. Ian McShane is a great villain, while not as good as Davey Jones or Barbossa for that matter, he still has a great storyline and some really menacing moments to make him a worthy adversary. My one major issue with this movie would be the storyline of the missionary and the mermaid. While thankfully it isn’t given enough screen time to be a really annoyance, I do question its point in the first place. Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom are not remotely missed, so why try a romance replacement which just isn’t that good. The mermaid action scene however is a thing to behold. As said the storyline is not amazing, the quest for the fountain of youth is entertaining and it has less betrayals than the far too long At World’s End, but it isn’t a story that will be winning awards. Nevertheless it maintains your interest and never feels like an excuse to get to the next action scene as it was in something like Transformers 2. The fact it is a one story arc is also a nice breath of fresh air following the second and third movies. Overall this is a great Summer movie, the kids will love it, and if you’re a pirates fan you will also love it. The trashing of this film to me is slightly irritating as this is genuinely a very good film that deserves recognition. I will stand by the Pirates films until I genuinely see one that is rubbish, this film is a great Summer blockbuster and anyone that looks at it otherwise must either be deluded or trashing on it because they no longer see Pirates as “cool”. I cannot recommend this film quite enough, just go out, watch it and have a great laugh, I know I did.

The idea of a “classic” director like Kenneth Branagh making a superhero film might initially sound strange, but in the case of Thor that ended up being very appropriate, because the comic always used Shakespearean drama and archaic language to tell the story of the God of Thunder, the political/family conflicts in the Asgard kingdom and its interaction with the universe of Marvel Comics. And Branagh’s competent direction, the excellent performances and the solid screenplay make Thor to be a very entertaining movie. I honestly had always preferred the character of Thor in small doses or as part of an ensemble, like he was on the beginnings of the comic The Avengers and in its modern reinterpretation The Ultimates. So, I did not have big expectations on a movie exclusively focused in that character; however, Chris Hemsworth brings a perfect performance in that role, because he could perfectly combine the pompous and operatic “classic” Thor with the dynamic and unstable modern Thor. I do not know how the purist fans of the Kirby/Lee era will take that mash-up, but I think it was a very good decision, specially because Thor does not only work as an origin of that superhero, but also as an efficient preamble of the highly anticipated film The Avengers, which will be an unification point of Marvel’s film universe. For example, we also have the character of Agent Coulson conducting scientific investigations from S.H.I.E.L.D. with his accustomed astuteness and efficiency; we also have a cameo of one of my favorite Avengers (even though without his traditional uniform); and a post-credits scene where a few concepts we are surely going to see in that future movie are established. But well…it would not be fair to only consider Thor as an extra-large trailer of The Avengers. As I previously said, it is a very entertaining movie with various positive elements, like Branagh’s efficient direction, which drives the movie at a perfect rhythm. As for the cast, besides of the previously mentioned Hemsworth, I think that the rest of the actors are also worthy of applause, starting by Natalie Portman, who can perfectly express her character’s emotions. I also liked the work from Stellan Skarsgård; his participation is relatively short and it would seem irrelevant if it was not for the dramatic weight this actor brings to the character with his mere presence. And Kat Dennings is quite funny and credible as the comic relief. As for the screenplay, it is very well written; the only thing I would say against it is that it makes a few “traps” which feel a bit forced. As for the action scenes, I found them to be well filmed, with the exception of a few excessive close-ups which made them occasionally confusing; I think that is the only thing I can say against Branagh’s direction. In conclusion, I took a very pleasant surprise with Thor, and I can recommend it as a very good re-invention of a difficult to handle superhero. It might not be a great film, but it definitely made me have a good time.

Sure the original was something fresh, new, and somewhat original. But the sequels have been anything but. Yeah i know it’s high octane fun, but you can say the same thing about Michael Bay films. Am i saying that these sequels are as bad as Michael Bay films? No, but each one offers nothing new, well, unless you count drifting, and that isn’t saying a lot. Hopefull this new installment can bring something fresh to the table. I never thought i would say this, but i actually enjoyed this movie. I went in with low expectations, and came out pretty damn satisfied. Sure the movie had a lot of the same moving parts, but what really made this one stand out is how it actually changed the pace of how they normally do things. First, they didn’t have a damn drag race every 10 minutes. In fact, they barely had any. Which really is a genius idea, because when the time did come to have an awesome driving sequence, you were begging for it. Finally, someone with brains stepped into this movie and said let’s save all of our bullets and unleash them in the end. So with a series that relies heavily on their driving sequences and less on their script, how do you keep your audience entertained? Well, the first step is to incorporate another major actor, enter The Rock. Next, you really need to buff up your script. Okay, here is where it gets both good and bad. It’s good because the movie takes a ton of it’s credit from the “Ocean 11″ films. Yeah, it’s stealing an idea, but it injecting more action into it, which is pretty cool. But the reason why i say it’s also bad, is because it’s still packed with bad cheesy one-liners, poor acting, and some really tarnished plot outlines. But does that take anything away from the fun…….not really. Bottom Line, okay people, here is your first action movie worth seeing this year. No, i am not one of those people who hold these ‘Fast and Furious’ films on a high pedestal. Not since the first one have i given anything over a decent review. But i can say with confidence that this one is actually worth your hard earned dollar. Sure it’s slightly cheesy, packed with impossible action, and sure it steals some plot outlines from other films, but i like i said earlier, it’s still fun to watch. So with that being said, the question remains…..is this the best one in the series? I still say no, but this movie comes damn close. Closer that any of the other ones, thats for damn sure. On a time line, this should have followed up the original

In a world of a.d.d. and people who can’t seem to handle complicated twist and turns and 2:30 hour movies, this one is for you! It runs under an hour and a half and despite it being in 3D (i saw it in regular 2D and it was fine) If you’ve read or wiki’d the graphic novel of “Priest” you’ll know that they changed it. Personally i think it works for the better. This is defiantly thee best vampire movie i have ever seen. Scott Charles Stewart does a heluva job in his (3rd) 2nd real “big” movie. And Cory Goodman also did a heluva job transferring the graphic novel about fallen angels and the devil to a genre that puts together the very best of Westerns, Horrors, Mad Max, and action films that makes “Cowboys and Aliens” look like that will also kick some major ass. “Priest” starts out with an eerie background scene with Paul Bettany, Maggie Q, Karl Urban and the other priets lurking the catacombs of a hive. It then goes on to explain the history of this world in a very nicely done graphic novel kind of way with some anime. Stephen Moyer (True Blood fans will love the movie too) opens the plot with his wife and daughter getting attacked by something who ends up taking the daughter Lucy. The Priest order is basically a group of powerful warriors trained to kill vampires and they are really the only people who can stand a chance. But after the war, the church locked the remaining vampires away and all is declared well in Denmark. The Church plays off very Dark Age like. They are powerful and what they say goes. Almost right up to King George era. With the vampires locked up and all well in the world, the Priest order is disbanded and ordered to basically stay out of trouble. So the trained for war Priest are left out in the cold with no other real skills other then slaying vampires. Paul Bettany is the best of the priest order and he is trouble by constant nightmares about the opening scene in the catacombs. He is encouraged by the Monsignor played brilliantly by Christopher Plumber to just forget about it. But with the arrival of Hicks (played by Cam Gigandet) the sheriff of the town recently attacked, Priest finds out that it was his family that was the ones attacked. His brother (Moyer) was badly injured, sister in law killed and niece taken and Hicks swears it was a vamp attack. But the church, mainly Monsignor Orelas (Plumber) refuses to let Priest go because there IS NO vampire problem. At the local bar talking with the only man on the church council on his side (Alan Dale) he decides to go against the church and as he was told over and over again, “Going against the church is going against God!” So he and Hicks take off to his family’s town to try and pick up their trail. Paul Bettany and Moyer have a good hearted scene where he makes his brother promise to get Lucy back and kill them all. Meanwhile the man in the Black Hat (played freaking awesomely by Karl Urban, very creepy and very bad, which is very good for us!) who has Lucy and with his group of familiars and vampires wreak havoc on unsuspecting towns. So its up to Priest and Hicks, who is in love with Lucy, to find her before she is bitten and thus forcing Priest to kill his own flesh and blood. With Priest gone rouge, Orelas calls upon the remaining 4 priests (Maggie Q included) in the city and orders them to hunt their brother down and bring him back…dead or alive! *gasp!* Which forces the Priestess (Maggie Q) to either take down a friend and fellow priest or go against a church and God who is all she has known from a little girl. The movie is just plain awesome and fun and legendary! The way they depicted the vampires and their structure is very unique. I hope they make more! So sit back and enjoy!

Joe Wright directs a smart thriller with great performances and a good sense of direction. It’s not a “Shoot Em Up” action film, but instead a combination of a Fairy Tail, Thriller, Coming of Age story where our heroine, “Hanna” must find her way in the world she wishes to explore while dodging an obsessed CIA operative bent on killing her father and taking her for her own purposes. The story begins when Hanna who has been raised “off the grid” for nearly all her life grows up into a highly trained, and skilled survivalist. Her skills include high level martial arts, marksmanship, knife fighting and evading tactics. She’s been raised all her life by her “Father” Eric who has told her that as long as she stays in the forest and out of the outside world she’ll be fine. But she yearns to learn about the world outside, knowing that “Marisa” a CIA operative who was responsible for the death of her mother may still be out there and will stop at nothing to get her. She makes the decision to set in motion a chain of events which will bring her out of the world she’s always known and force her to confront the past of her Father, Marisa and herself. All the while experiencing the world from a set of fresh eyes, which can at times be overwhelming. One of the things that will be a difference is that this film feels “European” rather than American. Saoirse Ronan who plays Hanna owns the character by portraying a young naive girl who is both dealing with her highly adaptive abilities as an assassin and trying to find her way in a world completely alien to her. You feel the humanity from her as she tries to suppress the killing machine inside, and the shock when she finds out the truth of her Father and the motivations of Marissa. Eric Bana delivers a great performance as Erik, Hanna’s father. But Cate Blanchett is superb in her role as Marissa, the CIA operative operating rouge in order to satisfy her obsessive desire. A good amount of action coupled with suspense and of course concern for what happens to Hanna leads to a great ending. It may not be for everyone but it’s a refreshing film executed very well.

I was able to attend a sneak preview of this film last night. I took my 7 year-old daughter. She enjoyed the movie tremendously. I think it inspired her without scaring her too much. I enjoyed the incredible true story and the family interactions. There were a couple of times when it really hit me to think about what I would do if this happened in my family. The shark bite scene wasn’t all that gory. It certainly could have been more graphic but I was thankful they didn’t take it to that level. As an astute adult, I did find some of the special effects lacked the look of a bigger budget movie. In several surf scenes it was obvious that they superimposed the actor’s faces over someone else doing the surfing. The close-up shots done while surfing were obviously done in a studio. They did do a much better job of “erasing” the missing arm on AnnaSophia Robb. There were only a couple of times when you noticed some irregularities. I didn’t really care for religious aspects of the movie. To me, it seemed as if they cut some religious scenes while keeping in some of the more subtle religious parts (reading the Bible, quoting scripture, etc.). Bethany does take a religious mission but even the religious nature of the trip takes a back seat to the lessons learned. They either needed to make the family’s faith a bigger part of the movie or remove it altogether. It just seem disjointed, almost as if they originally planned on a more focused religious audience only to cut parts out to appeal to a broader audience (i.e., non-believers). Overall, I would recommend this movie to adults and kids. Kids younger than 6 might get a scare from a couple of scenes. The inspirational parts outweighed the relatively low-budget CGI scenes.

Oh, how we all love us some good old fashioned Contained Action- Thrillers! Last year we got the dreadful but noteworthy “Unstoppable” – in which our two heroes stationed themselves inside a moving train in an attempt to stop an unmanned freight train heading toward a city. Let it be noted, that film is nothing like Source Code. No sir, not one bit. What is Source Code, you ask? Think something along the lines of Die Hard/Groundhog Day/Clue-The board game, in a nutshell. So, what makes this film different? It’s smart, focused, and suspenseful. Whereas in Unstoppable, we pretty much knew where the whole deal was heading. But we’re not talking about that film. This is Source Code, and i’m going to tell you straight up, this flick is the best film this year SO FAR. Source Code begins with our lead character, Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhall), waking up on a Chicago commuter train, opposite Christina (Michelle Monaghan) a woman whom we sense he’s never met, talking to him as if they’ve known each other some time. Immediately after, we learn that he’s a Helicopter pilot for the US Army, and that he in fact has never met this woman before. He has no clue how he’s gotten to where he is, or why. All he knows is that this woman apparently knows him well, and thinks his name is ‘Sean’. Confused by all of this, he goes to the bathroom, only to find that the person in the mirror isn’t him, it’s someone else. As us, the audience, try to process all of this information in our mind, the train abruptly explodes into flames, killing everyone on board. The opening immediately attaches you to the story, with the great score, unsettling tone, and disorienting editing. It also leaves us with tons of questions: What the hell just happened? Who is Christina? Who is this ‘Sean’ Character? Why is Colter in this situation? Then Colter wakes up again, but now in a dimly lit cement capsule, alone, talking to fellow soldier Goodwin. We discover that the commuter train he was just on was destroyed by a terrorist bomb earlier that day, and that there may be an even larger attack that could destroy Chicago. We also learn that he’s a participant in an experimental Army intelligence program that allows him to continually relive the last eight minutes of one of the train’s passengers life (Sean), in order to find the bomb and the terrorist who has threatened the larger attack in the heart of Chicago. And like Groundhog Day, he experiences the same events over and over again, remembering each and every one. Giving him the chance to inspect every suspicious passenger, as well as getting to know Christina a bit more a long the way, and eventually beginning to care for her safety. But unfortunately, all of the these people are already dead, they only exist in the parallel universe of the ‘Source Code’. Every eight minutes he’s warped back to the capsule, where he is debriefed by Jeffery Wright and Vera Farmiga’s characters, then sent back into the Source Code. The science behind the film is very far-fetched, so it’s up to you, the viewer, to let go and let Duncan Jones and his crew take over your mind for an hour and a half. And he promises a very intense thrill ride that will definitely be memorable in the future as a very intelligent and unique take on the contained thriller. Nevertheless, there definitely are plot-holes in the film, and the ending is maybe too subtle for the everyday sci-fi fanatic. But i believe it’s safe to say that this film succeeds in almost every category, with the constant suspense and mystery, great action sequences, and the amazing score. Source Code keeps you guessing throughout, anticipating who the bomber could be. The very definition of High Concept. Source Code is well deserved full price worthy movie that hopefully will become a box office success as well. God knows Hollywood doesn’t put out enough original material like this anymore.

Matrix+Anime+Lord Of The Rings+Kill Bill+Sin City+Samurai/ninja+Bayonetta+Final Fantasy 13 = Sucker Punch♥! Just came back from the premiere, first of all I gotta say I am soooo happy with this movie!:D I was afraid it was gonna end up being not that good… But I hoped and expected it to be this good and cool and it delivered! The way this movie was directed and the soundtrack is simply wow! It’s really cool that most of the songs are a little remixed and sung by the actors themselves, Sweet Dreams sung by Emily Browning in the intro is so dark, creepy and nice! The music plays an important role in the movie because it triggers the fantasy, action scenes so it really had to be picked carefully and it fits great. I really like the visuals in the movie, the locations, the way the characters look and move and sound… The whole movie feels as if it’s happening on a theatre stage… If you’vee watched 300/Watchmen, you’ll notice the same shade of grey/brown and blue/green throughout the whole movie. The story is pretty good and there are some real shockers in the plot, but I’m not gonna reveal anything! All I’m going to say is if you’re expecting this to have the typical action movie ending, wrong! The acting was OK, I liked Carla Gugino very much! Also the characters of Sweet Pea and Rocket seem to be the most developed… Now for the action and the effects and visuals… DROOL! The special effects are flawless in my opinion, the action scene with the 3 big samurai is seriously the best action scene I’ve ever seen! I really like the little touches to their costumes and weapons like the cute little anime bracelets on Baby Doll’s gun! The girls did a great job with the stunts! They didn’t overdo with the actions scenes, they’re incorporated really well into the movie. But once they start… wow! They pretty much covered everything!:D Since I’m an anime fan, this movie is pure sex for me! The only thing I would’ve liked is another culminating action scene and villain, the second part of the film was a little less epic… But still, nice work not ending it like everyone expects it to end! It gave it a deeper meaning… Maybe it was even better that way… The movie is probably more a 7 or 8 (mostly for non-anime fans etc.), but I’m giving it 9/10 because of the directing/music used and the character of Baby Doll! Really I think this is the best anime movie ”adaptation” (if such has even existed before). To summarize, GO WATCH THIS!:D You’ll have so much fun! I’m probably gonna go watch it again in a few days^^…

As war movies go, ho-hum. Saving Private Ryan set a good example of how a war movie should look like, and still directors don’t achieve that level, even if they are inspired by it. I can’t quite figure out what’s holding them back. It does work. But as alien invasion movies go, it’s the most “grounded.” You won’t find any brain-sucking aliens in this movie, or U.S. presidents in fighter jets, or Microsoft viruses infecting the alien mothership, or aliens suddenly catching the flu and dying off soon after the attack. Because what I mean by being very “grounded” is the opposite extreme. It’s not a movie about aliens, it’s a movie about Marines at war, and while they are fighting aliens, there is nothing particularly “alien” about them when it comes to battle — they’re just tougher to kill. Therein lies the reality-flaw: aliens able to travel from another star (presumably) and swarm our planet shouldn’t be using ballistic firearms, they’d be using something a lot more deadly and advanced. Gas? Lasers? Chemical / viral drops? And even if they went ballistic, the shells ought to at least be armor-piercing and heat-sinking. While the alien machinery was tough to beat, it wasn’t impossible, and it didn’t seem to possess technology that was in advance of ours. In fact, they didn’t even seem to have gravity control, but rather their ships flew rocket- style. That’s just so 50’s, isn’t it? There are many complaints about the shaky hand-cam effect in Battle: Los Angeles. Really? NOW everyone’s complaining, after a hundred jiggling action movies in the last 10 years that have driven me to CVS upon leaving the theater? Even as a shaky-cam movie, it wasn’t nearly as hard to watch as just a few minutes a Michael Bay movie. It’s like all the cameramen these days have Parkinson’s. And yet despite that I gave it 7 stars out of 10 here, which is pretty high, and I suppose I did that for a couple of reasons. One, it was the most superior alien invasion movie that’s been done to date. It divorced itself from the ideas behind Independence Day, War of the Worlds (remake), The Day the Earth Stood Still (remake), and Skyline, and tried to deal out all-out destruction without any over- ambitious science fiction ideas or save-the-earth-from-humans propaganda. I appreciated that, although I wished there was more “Sci-Fi” and less “Marines.” Aliens struck a much more satisfying balance between the two, and had better plotting, better pacing, and a cooler foe. Two, while the movie didn’t take a lot of time to develop characters, the actors were strong performers that felt tangible and empathetic. I felt I was there with them, and that’s where a lot of genre movies fail. They felt more like real people than actors playing people from a memorized script. But as a science fiction movie about alien visitation (not necessarily war), it’s way, way down on the interest list. District 9 was much more compelling.

I heard from a number of people that this was excellent so I went to see it myself being a fan of animated movies and of film in general. And I absolutely loved it, other than being a little too long, which is such a minor complaint, it was a wonderful film with some surprisingly mature themes and does very well at trying something different. The animation for starters is outstanding. Not only do the characters move convincingly, but the colours look gorgeous and the backgrounds are imaginative and stunning. The soundtrack is another plus, the score is wonderful with a sense of fun, great use of instruments and nods to Ennio Morricone, without being too generic or over-the-top with some inspired musical flavour to it. The script is funny, smart and quirky as well- loved the Chinatown(Ned Beatty based his performance on that of John Huston’s) and Star Wars references, the characters are genuine and likable with heart and don’t fall into the trap of being too cliché(there are some but it works in the film’s favour and I loved the title character), the film goes at a great pace while remaining wholly satisfying at its end with an almost elegiac quality that is there with almost all the best westerns, the slapstick action bounces along nicely and the story is far from formulaic instead it is original and inventive. The voice acting is wonderful, both Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy- Rattlesnake Jake is awesome!- give knockout performances, while Isla Fisher, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Harry Dean Stanton and Abigail Breslin are equally terrific. In conclusion, a wonderful film that I wasn’t expecting to be this good this early on in the year. On a side note, for those complaining about suitability for children, I actually wouldn’t say this was a film for kids but more adult-oriented.

There’s animation and then there’s the animation based on motion capturing, which had seen the likes of films such as The Polar Express and the recent A Christmas Carol. For personal reasons I don’t quite dig this particular brand of art, straddling neither here nor there with its desire to be photo realistic, yet tinged with that hint of exaggerated elements that can only be made through the animated medium rather than live action. Then again if the artwork didn’t impress, the story did for a bit, with a surprisingly strong emotional core attached to it that many can identify with, especially if we had been mean to our own moms before. Mars needs moms, only because the Martians themselves are so bad at parenting and want to outsource this function, given a shift in ideology no thanks to a mean matriarch at the helm of their society, buried deep beneath the surface such that our Pathfinder is rather useless at detecting lifeforms. As Mars doesn’t have the necessary support environment, Moms get kidnapped from Earth, sent back to Mars, have their parenting DNA sucked out of their beings, implanted into Nannybots, before being obliterated in the process which involves the sun – yes Martians are environmental friendly and use renewable solar energy. The next mom on the Martian’s target is Milo’s mom (Joan Cusack), who impressed through their deep space surveillance camera with her ability to keep the naughty Milo (Seth Green) under control from taking out the trash to sending him to his room for not eating his veggies. Some hurtful exchange of words from son to mother, before he discovers the Martian’s ploy and made himself a stowaway on a spaceship back to Mars, where he turns from prisoner to rescuer with the help of a perpetually high Gribble (Dan Fogler), who teaches him a thing or two about survival on the red planet, wanting Max to become his BFF if not for the latter’s insistence to save his mom. So begins a quick adventure of about an hour with an audacious rescue mission to exploit its 3D-ness (watching this on 2D, there weren’t many sequences designed to do that, really), also with the help of convenient online, realtime translator sets the humans use to communicate with their Martian helper in Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), a somewhat non-conformist female Martian being influenced by the Flower Power propaganda the Martians have while researching Earth, graffiti painting the dull look of Mars with psychedelic colours. An unnecessary subplot occurs with the romantic dalliances between Martian and Man (really, eww), as well as some commentary about nature versus nurture with the male martians not being cared for by Moms and becoming more like Apes when left to their own devices when forced away from civilizations – there are two layers here, one being the females ruling the world, with the male species through the lack of nurturing going back to their primal selves. Still, what made this film bearable for the most parts is the emotional core of the story stemming from Milo’s regret in saying what could possibly be the meanest comment anyone can make toward their moms, which intensified his sense of urgency and regret as he races against the clock to save his her. You’ll be hard pressed not to tear up (oh the manipulation, Disney), though the insult to intelligence if you’re older than 5 years come from the final act, involving the lack of breathable air which I thought on one hand was brave of Disney to attempt something a little bit more shocking as is, but on the other pulled its punches with what was very implausible, that robbed it of its credibility. The only aspect which impressed was the sheer amount of work going on behind the motion capture, where you can see plenty of behind the scenes effort when the end credits were rolling, where the actors are strapped to multiple sensors of all kinds placed on their bodies while they act out their scenes made up of sparse looking, makeshift sets that double up for the real thing. Some nice touches also involved the first person perspective when the Martians speak, where we get to hear both Martian and English language tracks simultaneously as if we have put on the translating device ourselves.

I went into this movie as pretty much a blank slate, having only seen a trailer on the internet and because nothing else really played. Based on this trailer I expected an action movie with little depth, lots of explosions and hot women and some true Southern-state-gung-ho attitude, starring Nic Cage which raised some skepticism (if you think of Nic Cage you think of puppy eyes, not a mean ass-kicking-machine) and a vague story about hell and damnation which was probably forgettable, some dribbling about a baby and a satanic cult and lots of explosions and violence. What I got however, was far more than I expected, and I will tell you why. First of all, the main attraction of this movie is its adult content. The characters curse, have sex, drink, smoke and generally do everything god forbids and they are good at it. One of the two main antagonists, played by Billy Burke, is your stereotypical ’satanic cult-leader and self-proclaimed messiah’ drinking blood, wearing pentagrams around his neck and generally being a hillbilly and the other antagonist is a dry-as-sand suit-wearing cold-and-calculating William Fichtner who is hunting Nic Cage, Cage is hunting the satanic hillbilly and his cult of followers/gun-wielding goons because they killed his daughter and stole her baby to sacrifice for satanic rituals, and the hillbilly and his satanic cult are on the move, trying to get to whatever place they are trying to go to sacrifice the infant. Nic is assisted by the lovely Amber Heard, playing the token female lead which should always be present in a popcorn action flick like this, and delivers the eye-candy we all hoped for. Nic looks bad-ass wearing his scars, bruises and sunglasses and overall pulls off a very enjoyable Milton, who escaped from hell to ‘resolve some unfinished business’. Spitting one-liners, wielding giant weapons and overall being an angry SOB he holds up admirably, against all expectations. Billy Burke pulls off a great hillbilly messiah, together with Elvis looks and southern-state accent but the real star, in my opinion is William Fichtner, the ‘Accountant’ sent back from hell to tie up loose ends, which in this case means bring back Nic Cage. His lines are great and delivered with great, dry wit, he pulls off the bored, better-than-you attitude amazingly, even in the face of extreme violence and every scene with him in it is a highlight. Mix in some cops being fooled by the Accountant into chasing Nic, evil cultists trying to summon the apocalypse at all costs for Nic to go through and you’re left with a greatly enjoyable action flick with many memorable moments, which at times remind of great movies like Shoot ‘em Up or Die Hard, a great and fitting soundtrack that never fails to get you pumped, eye-candy (every female in the movie almost) and a great performance by the main characters, some pretty good 3D (even though the objects-flying-at-spectator-level was a bit high at points, but I guess it fits a movie going for pulp and over-the-topness) and an overall great gritty vibe and you are left with a thoroughly enjoyable action flick. Does it have its flaws? It sure does. There are a couple of plot holes, some things happen quite abruptly and without explanation and it’s certainly not thought-provoking, but if you take it for what it is, you will not be disappointed. I graded it a 8/10, because it is the most fun I’ve had in the cinema this year, so far, but this is entirely subjective and in the grand scheme of things it’s no Godfather or Citizen Kane, but it’s obvious what this movie is going for from minute one, and the things it sets out to do it does so admirably.

With the teenage fantasy film franchise about to face a dearth once Harry Potter finally goes one on one with Voldemort, and when the Twilight lovers get to live together as undead beings, something has to be done to fill the void. There were a number of pretenders, so many that even I’m lazy to name but a few recent efforts such as Percy Jackson or Cirque du Freak even. What’s amazing with this production effort is that only one book has been released thus far, with one of two planned sequels hitting the shelves only in August this year. So how it all pans out in the novels by Jobie Hughes and James Frey is anyone’s guess, but as a film, it contains all the trappings for its intended teenage target audience. And that means plenty of eye candy characters, out of this world powers, with buddy relationships and romantic ones forged. The film doesn’t waste time jumping straight into where the action is in Kenya, where we witness the quick death of Number Three (Greg Townley) and his guardian, and we soon learn that their deaths have to follow a strict sequential order, so if you miss the deaths of Numbers One and Two, hit the trailer because it’s there, and not contained in the film. No point regurgitating what’s already done, right? I Am Number Four is just that, an introductory tale to a hopeful franchise to be blessed with some longevity. And with most origin films, this one spent considerable time in establishing the ground rules for discovery of powers, the relationships between characters, all primed for action sequences in between long drawn narratives building up toward that inevitable big bang conclusion which contained everything but the kitchen sink. all nicely choreographed with loads of CG enhancement in a bayhem manner that will make producer Michael Bay so proud with the decimation of a school and its sprawling football pitch. Simply put, it’s like an extended version of Superman, but only for a race called the Loriens having sent nine of their offspring to Earth in order to escape total extermination by another alien race known as the Mogadorians. As they grow up incognito, they find out they have superhuman powers, yet have to be protected and lying in waiting for their true calling like sitting ducks. Being tracked and hunted down one by one by their space enemies is no fun, and Number Four (Alex Pettyfer), also known as John Smith, decide to hold some ground much to the disappointment of guardian Henri (Timothy Olyphant, who was a Hit-man once so he knows what he’s talking about), since it’s not that hard to find him with his penchant of not knowing how to lie low, developing a hunger for earthly education and getting into the periodic scuffles in high school no thanks to attention showered on and being showered upon by his junior and budding photographer Sarah (Dianna Agron). It’s then no surprise that with the parallels to Superman, the screenplay got written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who between them have clocked countless of Smallville episodes, joined by Marti Noxon in adapting the book for the screen, taking certain expected liberties when translating material from one medium to another. Somehow they didn’t manage to keep the narrative tight in the beginning, deciding to sprawl it to introduce plenty of bit characters, though for important ones like the sidekick Sam (Callan McAuliffe), little time got devoted to telling his back story properly, as it was deemed more effective in trying to do so in a rather haphazard, impromptu manner. Like the Twilight films, this one had its fair share of moments in the beginning deeply entrenched into whipping up a boring romance, and to those who prefer the action as promised in the trailer, we’ll be looking toward our watches to pass time. D.J. Caruso is certainly no stranger with stories that have teenage protagonists in the fight of their lives against something larger than they can imagine, with his most recent collaborations with Shia LeBeouf being case in point in Disturbia and Eagle Eye, and with strong alpha-female type characters to boot too supporting by the side, here with Teresa Palmer doing an about turn from her damsel in distress type of role in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, to being one ass- kicking alien in Number Six, obviously having reached her power puberty before Number Four. The villains don’t really pose much of a threat besides looking and behaving mean, and it’s a little bewildering why a race without powers and who uses space aged guns and winged creatures can defeat a race with magical guardians, maybe perhaps through sheer overpowering with numbers. I’m not about to read the book to find out though, nor was it explained about the very sticky sequential order that has to be stuck to. The special effects were top notch however, with the final act turning into a big Star Wars battle with blue and red lasers flying all over the place, and Number Six stealing the show with her more developed powers which include something ripped off from Nightcrawler in X-Men 2, and what I thought was the money shot together with Number Four as they fend off one final big bang. Truly impressive stuff there. Primed for a follow up film, whether it does get made is the question. I had expected a more compact origin told in one sitting to get it out of the way, but it soon became a slow plod bogged down by uninspired caricatures, with too much left out in the open, and generic gun totting villains who are obviously no match for the powers the heroes possess, making it pretty much a one sided fight. Could have been better, or that I belonged to the wrong demographic target to begin with.

“Sanctum” is a tiresome, unsavory, disaster saga that is no joy to watch. This grueling disaster epic occurs deep in the surrealistic Esa-ala Caves of Papua New Guinea. The Australian scenery that substitutes for the New Guinea setting looks just as sensational and “Kokoda” lenser Jules O’Loughlin makes the beautiful but rugged scenery appear awesome with his 3-D cameras. A National Geographic documentary about the caves would have been more rewarding than what sophomore Aussie director Alister Grierson, scenarist John Garvin, and producer Andrew Wight deliver in this dreary, 100-minute, R-rated melodrama. Occasionally, the suspenseful situations and the sprawling underwater scenery off-set the otherwise lackluster qualities of “Sanctum”. Meanwhile, you have to contend with some foolish, self-absorbed characters that don’t depart quickly enough. Worse, all the good characters—primarily the supporting cast—who are likable die horrible deaths as the filmmakers whittle down the number of people. This abysmal, thinly-written adventure about survival of the fittest wears out its welcome very quickly. The winding, treacherous caves with multiple chambers that constitute a yellow brick road of sorts for our intrepid explorers serve as a metaphor for life. As our scuba-diving, cave expert protagonist comments, the caves represent a craggy vision of Hell underwater. “There’s no God down here,” Frank observes without a shred of hope. and you may find yourself yearning for the end credits a lot sooner than they come. “Sanctum” concerns amateurs who spend their time mapping geography rather than dealing with important life issues. These characters aren’t doing anything heroic. They are neither saving lives nor improving their own lives. They are the equivalent of thrill-seekers with elaborate technology. National Geographic wants photos, and these people aren’t trying to resolve serious world issues, like hunger, oppression, and disease. They are mapping the Esca-ala Caves and they have rendered the caves in a sophisticated computer-generated video. Nevertheless, Frank (Richard Roxburgh of “Van Helsing”) wants to know where it comes out in the ocean. The script pits him against his idealistic, irresponsible, teenage son, Josh (Rhys Wakefield of “The Black Balloon”), who hates him. Frank has spent more time spelunking than playing parent. These two are at each other’s throats for the first hour. Predictably, Josh grows to love Frank as they confront one perilous obstacle after another. Ultimately, a raging storm cuts them off from help above. Communication with the surface breaks down and they are trapped with no way to get out. Meaning, they cannot go back the same way that they came. Wealthy financier Carl (Ioan Gruffudd of “The Fantastic Four” franchise), who is footing the bill for the exploration, flies in by helicopter with his whiny girlfriend Victoria (Alice Parkinson of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) and repel into the cave. Carl decides to beat them to the bottom and parachutes into the cave. Storm warnings have been issued but the expedition doesn’t maintain adequate vigilance. Meanwhile, long before the storm strikes, Frank and Josh clash because an older female diver, Liz (Nicole Downs of “Knowing”), died during an equipment malfunction without back-up equipment in an underground grotto. Before everybody realizes it, they have lost contact with the surface, and the storm shows up and the water levels rise in the cave. Carl and Victoria aren’t prepared for these dangerous conditions. They create chaos later when the flood waters confine them to the lower depths with Frank, Josh and other crew members. The filmmakers whittle down the number of victims during the second half-hour. At one point, Victoria refuses to don Liz’s scuba suit because she cannot tolerate the thought of wearing a dead woman’s outfit. This infantile attitude comes back to haunt Victoria later because the water gets pretty chilly where they wind up. Before everything is over, everybody is either at each other’s throats or they are dead from freak accidents. “Sanctum” boasts the two oldest literary themes: man versus nature and man versus man. Sadly, it does nothing imaginative with either. The one flaw that stands out is the way our cavers are stranded below because their cohorts at the surface don’t monitor the weather. Of course, a physical lack of vigilance is the reason, but a storm just doesn’t creep up and the power just doesn’t go out that quickly . . . unless the drama of the situation requires it. The characters aren’t entirely sympathetic. They consist of half-wits, dim-wits, and no-wits, so Grierson and Garvin make it difficult for us to feel a modicum of compassion for them. Women suffer terribly, too. They behave like incredible imbeciles. Just to emphasize how realistic that “Sanctum” is, Grierson stages two mercy killing scenes where characters drown friends or relatives because they are too badly smashed up to be evacuated out of the cave. Clearly, “Sanctum” is not a good choice as for a romantic date movie. James Cameron of “Avatar” fame served as executive producer. Otherwise, he had little to do with this soggy saga. Producer Andrew Wight concocted this tale based on an autobiographical experience that he had when fourteen people and he were trapped in a cave for two days. Unfortunately, the dialogue that freshman scenarist John Garvin penned is as waterlogged as Grierson’s lackluster helming. This is the kind of movie where Mother Nature triumphs over mankind and the only victory is the survival of the very few. What little suspense that is generated seems misplaced because the characters aren’t worth worrying about. Finally, the surprises and revelations are too few and far between. If you must see “Sanctum,” wait until it is available for rental.

I am in no way familiar with the original Charles Bronson film The Mechanic from 1972, but that may have actually been a benefit with a film like this. This remake does seem to be targeted toward my demographic though. The Mechanic caters to those who enjoy hard-hitting action films with a lot of blood that spews more vulgarities than you care to keep track of with a fair chance of nudity along the way. Truth be told, if done right those types of films can be massively entertaining and The Mechanic definitely falls into the “done right” category. Jason Statham really seems to be hit or miss when it comes to how entertaining his films are and lately his work just hasn’t been all that satisfying. The Expendables left a really sour taste in my mouth, so I wasn’t sure how The Mechanic would turn out. However, this film was actually able to put Statham back in top form since it was able to deliver a pretty great story to compliment Statham’s bone crunching fight sequences he’s become notorious for. Despite the fact that the dialogue is filled with F-bombs left and right, it fit the overall tone of the film very well. Ben Foster wasn’t disappointing either. Foster is one of those incredible talents in his early thirties that most people seem to overlook as having endless potential. As far as his performance in The Mechanic, it isn’t quite as powerful as he was in The Messenger but seems to be more similar to his role in Hostage yet refined a bit to leave his true motives questionable. Donald Sutherland also makes the most of his short time on screen. He has two scenes with Jason Statham where he makes two fairly long speeches that seem to stick with you long after his character is gone. That’s how short-lived characters in films like this should be; memorable. The one thing the film falls victim to is the shaky camera during fight and chase scenes. It works most of the time and isn’t hard to follow, but there were two scenes involving Jason Statham’s character where it was hard to distinguish everything that was being shown because of this technique. It’s just when two guys are in a scuffle and they’re throwing fists or hurling their legs at their opponent, the camera whipping back and forth at the same time doesn’t really help matters. Now some guy’s dead, another falls to the ground after we hear a snap, and another is clutching his stomach even though we only saw the main character move twice. The technique gets confusing and either needs to be modified somehow or dropped altogether for something new. The Mechanic is actually really entertaining and is very much the definition of a guy film. It’s packed to the brim with explosions, bloody headshots, broken limbs, and even a hefty and destructive car chase sequence. The film is worth seeing for Ben Foster’s performance, but it’s nice to see Jason Statham in a film that isn’t disappointing for once. Overall, The Mechanic is dark, gritty, bloody, and just a hell of a lot of fun.

When I heard that Seth Rogan was going to play the Green Hornet, I had my doubts. He often portrays the same character, the loser/stoner/nice guy. I used to like the comic book and TV series, and I probably watched it because my dad played the trumpet, and he liked to play the “Flight Of The Bumble Bee” theme song, trying to emulate Al Hirt. “Not now Kato” was one of my early quotable phrases. “Green Hornet” was less popular than “Superman” and “Batman”, but had the better sidekick with Bruce Lee’s portrayal of Kato. And with the spate of movies that have been based on comic books, the expectations were high. So many blockbusters have been superhero-based and I was wondering if this movie was made only because it was one of the few left that hadn’t already been made into a movie and the producers were hoping to jump on the bandwagon. So with that, I eagerly anticipated seeing this movie. The movie opens with a gripping and yet goofy storyline. Christoph Waltz plays the criminal mastermind Chudnofsky, a man obsessed with being scary, and quickly establishes himself as the evil villain. Amid the violence is dialog that makes you laugh aloud. It won’t be the last time. Rogan plays Britt Reid, the overindulged party animal son of a wealthy newspaper owner. He and his father have had a tough relationship, with Reid never living up to his father’s impossibly high standards. After his father dies, he discovers Kato (Jay Chou), who, while devoted to the elder Reid also was treated poorly. As Britt discovers that Kato is a genius with cars and gadgets, they unwittingly become a pair of crime fighters. It’s a nice back story that sets the stage well for the sometimes rivaled relationship. They also compete for the attention of the secretary Lenore (Cameron Diaz), a role that is way underdeveloped. I’m not sure about this choice for the role, and even though I enjoy Diaz, it probably was time for a younger and fresher face to have been cast. Unlike the earlier incarnations, D.A. Scanlon (David Harbour) and the Green Hornet are not close allies. As the story unfolds, we get to see some of those great cars and gadgets. But it is the fight sequences that really sizzle. I saw the 2D version of this movie, and when it is released it will be a 3D version, and the fight sequences will no doubt benefit by being viewed in 3D, but even in 2D, they were awesome. The car chases and some other scenes will also likely be fun to watch in 3D, but I’m not sure that this movie really needed the extra special effects in order to become a classic. Throughout the movie, I was surprised by how often there were laugh-out-loud moments, as well as some great one-liners, usually by Rogan. Of course, there is the climactic chase scene and shoot out, with some new and interesting ways in order to make it fresh. You won’t be saying “I’ve seen THAT before” – believe me. The only problem I had was that the premise for the final car chase is a bit flimsy, and breaks the movie magic for me. ***Spoiler Alert*** I mean really, a hidden tape recorder that records on a flash drive, but you have to go back to the office to upload it? Wouldn’t you build mobile communications into the car if you took the time to install a fax machine? But I’m willing to suspend reality and forgive breaks from older story lines when it comes to the movies, and just let myself get wrapped up in the spectacle unfolding on the screen. “Green Hornet” is funny, action-packed, well-acted and gadget-filled to make this one of my favorite superhero movies. I’ll probably see it again in 3D just for fun. Rated PG-13 for violence and sexual references. Keep the 10 and under kids home. Opens Jan 14, 2011. 9 out of 5.

Kevin Flynn (Bridges) is the CEO of Encom and the world’s best video game developer. One night he simply vanishes without a trace and leaves his company in chaos and his young son. Fast-forward 20 years, Sam Flynn (Hedlund) is a rebellious 27 year old and a thorn in the side of Richard Mackey (Nordling), a suit trying to take over his father’s company with the help of a software designer (an uncredited cameo from Cillian Murphy). Though Sam is the heir, he refuses to play an active role in the decision-making process. Alan Bradley (Boxleitner) meets him one night with the news that he has received a page from Kevin Flynn’s arcade – a number that has been disconnected for 20 years. Thus ensues the inevitable investigation into his father’s whereabouts and Sam’s transportation into the world his father has created and been trapped in for decades. Where to begin? Tron: Legacy is a visual feast for your eyes and an auditory pleasure thanks to Daft Punk and Joseph Trapanese. The soundtrack feels ethereal almost and fits perfectly with this new world we have been introduced to for the first time (or the 2nd time if you’ve seen the 1982 original). 3D, for me, is a recent scourge that has been infecting and affecting the movie industry. Yes, maybe it is a more lucrative avenue for the movie industry after the setback of heavy piracy but enough is enough! Joseph Kosinski, however, had a vision (and an architectural degree behind him) to give us a mouth-opening, simply beautiful world with the correct blend of 2D and 3D! It is quite simply worth it just to go for the visuals. What the movie makes up for in spectacular imagery, it lacks in storyline. Maybe I should have watched the 1982 version as so many people have pointed out to me but even without it, the plot seems a little disjointed. The underlying connections to the real world are numerous such as The Holocaust, God complexes, evil doppelgangers and more. You are left with more questions than answers as it is never revealed just what it is about this world that would “change everything” in the real world. Jeff Bridges is great as both the villain and hero and his computer animated self is simply amazing although at the same time off-putting (this might be the Uncanny Valley hypothesis at work). The acting overall is not anything to write home about (no Oscar winners here) but Hedlund as Sam Flynn holds his own against a more charismatic Jeff Bridges. Quorra (Wilde) provides a potential love interest and the key to changing our world and a doe-eyed innocent view of life that is endearing. This is a movie that should be simply taken for what it is, a pandering to the original fan base whilst garnering new ones, one not to be over- analysed but simply to be marvelled at with a group of friends. The actions scenes are just jaw-dropping with light cycles (that I wish I owned!) and deadly Frisbees amongst other things. Disney took a risk to continue a series almost 3 decades later rather than going for the easy option of re-imagining it. A wise move.

These movies are a dying breed. Studios opt for PG-13 when they can, and the few R-rated movies there are often fail financially. Unfortunately that looks to be the case for Faster. I never cared about wrestling or The Rock, but since he switched to acting I’ve generally been impressed by Johnson. We can all agree material like Tooth Fairy is lame, but he was surprisingly solid early on in The Rundown and Walking Tall. The guy even out acted veterans like Travolta and Keitel in Be Cool. Since then he’s turned in a number of good performances: Get Smart, The Other Guys, and now Faster. While he works in lighter genres like comedy, this man was made for a movie like Faster. He exudes a sense of dark vengeance. Johnson plays a man simply known to us as Driver. Driver has a serious score to settle with some guys, and fresh from a 10-year prison sentence, he’s out for blood. Hot on his trail is Cop (Billy Bob Thornton). Also added to the mix is Killer, a professional hit-man hired by one of the men Driver’s after. Killer is unessential to the story, but he’s played surprisingly well, so it’s hard to fault his presence. The movie has its share of action, but not the amount the trailer made it look to have. In fact, a scene that was featured prominently in ads was completely cut from the film. You may recall – Johnson and Killer play chicken with their Chevelle and Ferrari. Neither gives, and the two cars collide head on, sending the Chevy flying. I can’t fault the filmmakers for this. They might have felt the confrontation to be superfluous, that the movie ended better without it. That’s fine, and it did have a good ending, I was just expecting more and was very much let down when it went to credits. So that’s my one beef, aside from a minor complaint about an unrealistic twist. But neither was enough to hurt the movie too badly. In fact, I was impressed at Faster’s emotional core. Johnson isn’t a robotic killing machine, he’s a man with a soul. Some of the men he hunts aren’t entirely soulless, either. Morality is very much a problem for Driver, and it’s this that elevates Faster above mindless R-rated violence. It’s good R-rated violence.

Jang Dong Gun, the South Korean movie star who’s known for far more than martial arts, has made his American blockbuster debut in “The Warrior’s Way”, a film about the greatest swordsman in the world who is forced to flee his home. While not precisely a science fiction movie, there are just enough fantastical elements in this Old Western-style action flick to make it into the genre without crossing over into the highly volatile “Sci-fi Western” category. And that definitely works for this movie. Here are some other things that work, and that don’t work. First, the plot. Yang, trained since childhood to be the greatest warrior ever, is sent by his tribe to destroy their rivals; every last one of them. However, when he meets the last one, a baby girl whom eventually is named April, he makes the decision not to kill her. This may seem like a cliché, but Yang’s goal was never to become a murderer. As a boy, he saw his own father murdered. He was adopted, essentially, and trained by the leader of his tribe to become an assassin; but his only ambition is to become the greatest swordsman in the world, and that ambition is not served by killing an innocent child. Knowing that his tribe will target him next for his failure, Yang takes the little girl with him and sets course for America. The circus town (very nearly a ghost town) which is his destination works for this movie. He goes there because an old friend of his lives there; well, lived there. Finding that his friend has passed away, he is persuaded by the townsfolk to stay and take over the laundry shop that has been idle ever since. He even takes over the flower garden that no one had yet been able to properly cultivate. The colorful characters, including the ringleader Eight-ball (Tony Cox), the drunken Ron (Geoffrey Rush), and the knife-throwing Lynne (Kate Bosworth), quickly befriend the wanderer from the Orient and his delightful little charge. Soon, Yang sees the advantages of, in the words of the narrator, “making things grow instead of cutting them down”. Again, it’s a cliché that could easily have been mishandled, but that director Sngmoo Lee deftly utilizes. The fight scenes in this movie are spectacular. Yang’s former compatriots eventually find him, as you’d expect; and, as you’d expect, an incredible battle ensues. Jang Dong Gun is neither over-the-top nor completely wooden as he plays the ruthless assassin cutting down his foes. The transition between the simple laundry man raising a little girl and the cool, calculating warrior is more seamless than you’d expect. The ninjas aren’t the only villains in this movie, either. Danny Huston plays the Colonel, a man who drops in and out of the town periodically, taking whatever he wants each time. Commanding a force of what seems like no fewer than a hundred Hell Riders, the various clowns and tricksters have little in the way of defense. However, Yang isn’t the only resident of this thriving circus town who hides a warrior side. When the final battle ensues, expect to see plenty of blood shed on all sides. Lynne’s storyline doesn’t quite work, though not for the reasons you might think. There must always be balance between the main plot and the subplots; specifically, the main plot must outweigh the others. Yang’s story certainly outweighs that of the circus town itself. The performers want to make a complete transition from “traveling” to “stationary”; part of that effort is in the creation of the gigantic Ferris Wheel. However, both Yang’s battle with his tribe and Lynne’s with the Colonel eventually come first, and no alternative is left to the other residents but to fight when the time comes. Between Yang and Lynne, there is an undeniable attraction, and an unmistakable chemistry as well. By the time the final fight has begun, it’s clear they’ve become equals, in their own way. That’s fine, for a romance movie; but for a romantic subplot to this particular movie, it’s not the best formula. Even Lynne’s confrontation with her adversary ends up seeming more central to the movie than Yang’s own. The “end” of the movie definitely works. I won’t give too much away, except to say this: when you train your entire life as a killer, how can you expect to simply walk away, even if all your enemies are dead? The movie is more bloody than I normally enjoy, and I don’t think every storyline worked as well as they could have. However, it was highly thrilling, and literally kept me on the edge of my seat during some scenes. Jang Dong Gun is my favorite part of the movie, quietly charming and deadly, some times at the same time. Even if “The Warrior’s Way” itself doesn’t take off, you can expect his future in cinema to, on both sides of the Pacific. He certainly works for me.

Description
If you’ve read the synopsis above, you pretty much know the long and short of Tony Scott’s “Unstoppable”. Based on the real-life story of an unmanned train that went careening down the tracks in Ohio after a railroad employee failed to set the air brakes while switching tracks, this dramatization of that little incident amps up the thrills for a white-knuckle 100-minute non-stop roller-coaster ride- just think of it as an adrenaline shot that pretty much grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go from start to finish. The setup is plain and simple- on one end of the track is rookie conductor Will Colson (Chris Pine), paired with veteran railroad engineer Frank Barnes (Denzel Washington) on his first day of work. Frank and Will each have their own share of family problems and each bear their own reservations of the other- so there’s a fair bit of tension between the two of them as they begin their shift, especially since Will is seen as the company’s new blood employed to replace the older workers (including Frank) who have one by one been forced to retire. Then on the other end of the track, some bumbling employee gets off a train in an attempt to switch tracks, puts the stick in throttle and sends the massive locomotive whizzing down rural Pennsylvania towards the more heavily populated areas. Corporate- represented by Kevin Dunn’s VP of operations- and local ground operations- represented by Rosario Dawson’s rail commander- can’t agree how to stop it, the former as usual weighing the options in terms of dollars and cents on the stock market. It is only halfway through the film that Frank and Will cross paths with said locomotive nicknamed “The Beast” and come out with a plan to link their engine to the back to it and gun it in the opposite direction. Tony Scott spends the first half of the film doing two things- one, emphasising the working-class backgrounds of Frank and Will; and two, laying out bare the peril of the situation. Both are deftly played for the nail-biting finish, which is guaranteed to leave you wide-eyed and open-mouthed. By portraying Frank and Will’s as everyday men with real concerns over livelihood and family, Scott and “Die Hard 4.0″ writer Mark Bomback make the point loud and clear later on that that real-life heroes are really just ordinary men who do extraordinary acts of courage in the face of danger and calamity. Indeed, though it is apparent that both Frank and Will are the heroes of the story, playing down the chest-thumping heroics of their act proves to be a wise choice in painting them as regular people who rose to the occasion to save the lives of thousands, including their families and loved ones. Scott instead stresses the magnitude of the occasion in repeated failed attempts at halting “The Beast”, each and every attempt highlighting the destructive force of the locomotive at that weight and at that speed. Choosing to film the high-octane action sequences in a more straightforward realistic manner than his usual flashy visual style (i.e. jump cuts, shaky camera, zooms and colour-correction) also lends the proceedings an authentic and an altogether genuinely riveting feel, further underlining the gravity of their heroic act. Special mention goes to the sound design of the film, which in a proper theatre with good sound system will set the hall rumbling with the sound of the locomotive. Because much of the focus of the film is on “The Beast”, more screen time seems to be dedicated to the train than to our two lead actors, Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. Still, the ever-reliable Denzel Washington delivers a low-key but no less commanding performance as the dutiful railroad worker Frank. He also shares a nice buddy chemistry with Chris, and it’s interesting to watch how the initial tension between the two gives way to mutual cooperation, understanding and finally respect. Unfolding at a breathless pace, Tony Scott makes the most of a simple premise to deliver a relentlessly exciting action movie that plays like “Speed” on tracks. It wastes no time in getting to the meat of the action, and doesn’t once let up right until the end of the thrill ride. In between, you get the story of two men, folks like you and I, who display an outstanding act of heroism when faced with imminent danger. Precisely because they are so relatable, “Unstoppable” becomes so much more gripping, and you’d be advised that this high-octane action movie is just the adrenaline fix you need for the week.

It should be wise for people to at least watch the first six films in order before watching this one, if they haven’t read the books already. With this film, we are slowly but surely bidding farewell to one of cinema’s most successful and imaginative franchises. The franchise, like Harry Potter himself, has grown and matured as the years (and films) progress. Part I of the “Deathly Hallows” is ultimately a strong build- up to what will be a triumphant, bittersweet finale for everybody. I won’t waste time trying to talk about the performances, because they are all great and powerful in their own way. Never mind that many of the cast members are very talented veteran British actors (try getting John Hurt, Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, Brendan Gleeson, David Thewlis, Michael Gambon, Helena Bonham Carter, Imelda Staunton, Jason Isaacs and Bill Nighy in the same film again) – the three young actors who we have come to love and care for following the first film a decade ago, basically carry the franchise on their shoulders, and this film is no exception. Radcliffe looks handsome, Grint looks gruff, and Watson looks gorgeous. They’ve grown into fine young people. Screenwriter Steve Kloves doesn’t forget to add the mood and gloom to the story as it slowly unfolds, but then again he adds some light humor to the film when it needs it. Bonus points for making this not only a visual spectacle, but also a character-driven ensemble; there’s some complex characterization here. Also there’s some action which aren’t seen on screen, but mentioned by the characters. It’s OK, because it’s necessary for the brisk pacing, and it’s not really that important anyways. Besides, the human mind can imagine these images far more powerfully. There are many themes in this film. Sacrifice, determination, (obviously) friendship, and above all – acceptance. As the films progressed the films started to gain an increasingly dark momentum – signaling that all hope may be lost. But in the end, will good triumph over evil? Like the film, real life isn’t so sure. Also, the fact that the actors and crew are moving on after a decade of making these films – it’s also another way of acceptance – the films have ended, they’re moving on for the better of their lives/careers. It’s real life, and I wish all these promising young actors brilliant lives and careers ahead of them. “Hallows: Part I” is many parts thrilling, as there are quite a number of intense action sequences. Many of them, of course, are done with well-rendered visual effects, and in this one they just blend in at a natural level without being too jarring. However, the action sequences are perfectly blended in with the gripping, dramatic moments. They don’t feel heavy handed and it’s beautiful to look at. The animated sequence about the origins of the Deathly Hallows is an absolute masterclass and jaw-droppingly beautiful to both watch and listen. If separated by itself it can win an Oscar for best animated short. The crew also get their due here. David Yates has gotten a firm grip on the film’s direction since directing the fifth and sixth films years ago. The cinematography is stunning and exquisite, and it gives off a certain moody hue to the film. The editing is also crisp, it’s not choppy when it doesn’t need to be. Alexandre Desplat’s score really makes a difference, it literally puts you into the world with its beautiful, harmonious, and emotional tones. In short, I would have to say that this film is the best “Harry Potter: film yet in all honesty. I grew up with the series, and as per the actors, it will be an emotional goodbye. But rest assured, the finale will be grand. One more thing. This interpretation of the novel is the best one yet. The novel is done justice, something not seen since the first three films. It’s something for both the fans and novel-readers alike, as there are some pieces only book readers can discover while watching the film. It’s definitely a huge improvement over “Half-Blood Prince”’s adaptation, which for me is the worst Potter film. Harry Potter is a phenomenon. But, like all things, it most come to an end eventually. This is the beginning of the end, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Overall rating: 75/100

One of the major events that President George W. Bush will undoubtedly be remembered for in history will be his decision to declare war on Iraq in 2003. If we recall back to early 2003 when the administration was laying out its reasons for invading Iraq, the one most marketed to the American public was the idea that Saddam Hussein was in the process of creating chemical or nuclear weapons, which he would then give to terrorists who could then use them to attack American cities. Of course, soon after the war began it was discovered that these weapons either never existed or no longer existed, and to this day no one in the CIA or federal government has been able to explain how the intelligence community could have gotten it so wrong. “Fair Game” places itself right in the middle of these controversial events between 2002 and 2004, and is told through the eyes of CIA Agent Valerie Plame (played very convincingly by Naomi Watts) and her husband, United Nations Ambassador Joe Wilson (played fiercely by the always great Sean Penn). The film’s story follows how Plame goes from patriotic CIA agent diligently doing her job overseas to suddenly having her identity made public after her husband uncovered false information about a nuclear development sale between Iraq and Niger. This false information about a uranium sale between these two countries is important because it was implied as factual when Bush was listing information about Iraq during his State of The Union Speech in early 2003. As the film starts, Plame and Wilson appear to be a very loving couple with a very strong marriage – they even have 2 small children who live with them in the D.C. area. Plame is busy traveling covertly to countries in The Middle East to shake her fist at people whom might have ties to terrorists, while Wilson is back at home, often finding himself in heated arguments with friends at the dinner table whom hold a different opinions from his own. Both Plame and Wilson appear to be relatively non-political civilians working peacefully and dutifully for the federal government – until the Bush administration decides that the country should invade Iraq. After Wilson criticizes the administration’s faulty information publicly, Plame is then fired from her job, and much of the rest of the film focuses on how the couple’s marriage is stressed because of what is transpiring all over the media. People harass them often when they go out, as Wilson makes rounds on the media circuit to try to restore his name. The film has a little bit of a soap-operish feel to it during the 2nd half in that it is mostly focused on the couple’s relationship, but the acting performances by Watts and Penn are just so sharp that they make up for some of the film’s small flaws when it comes to storytelling. There is also a small subplot involving a family in Iraq connected with Plame’s counter-proliferation efforts that should have been either developed more or left out entirely, as that is the weakest part of the film – but fortunately those scenes are relatively few in the entire film. Aside from the acting, another of the film’s strengths is how it never gets too preachy towards the Bush administration, but rather focuses on the facts of what unfairly happened to Plame and Wilson from their own points of view. In fact, no actor plays Bush or Cheney in the film – we only see a few clips of the real Bush and Cheneys giving speeches on TV screens for a matter of seconds. Scooter Libby (portrayed a bit villainously by David Andrews) is seen in a few short scenes as a swindler who tries to convince CIA employees into manipulating the intelligence the way he sees it, but his characterization is very subtle, rather than as an in your face bad guy. Doug Liman’s direction is also fairly fast-paced to make sure the film never gets too bogged down in pointless scenes. Even though it is very talky and dialogue-driven, the narrative keeps moving forward at a crisp pace – at least if audience members are adults without ADD (and I think it’s pretty fair to say that this movie isn’t marketed for the Transformers or Twilight crowd…) The film generally works very well both as an entertaining drama, spy thriller, and an educational lesson. Moreover, it’s an intelligent reminder to the public of how people in positions in power in government will often stop at nothing to achieve their desired goals, even if that means illegally abusing their power through misinformation, manipulation, and character assassination. As citizens we should constantly be questioning our leaders and their motives, as well as keeping them honest and holding them accountable whenever they they violate our trust. On a final note, I have to say that I find it very refreshing to see a film like this that has a woman in a very intelligent leading role, rather than how Hollywood films usually stereotype females in formulaic romantic comedies. It seems like women in major roles usually have their sappy characters obsessing about trying to find a man and buying shoes, with some slapstick and comedy at the dinner table with their parents thrown in as well (a.k.a. chick flicks). It’s either that or the female characters get almost zero screen time, where they are relegated to simply being the cute girlfriend sidekick. It’s nice to see movies like this allow womens’ dramatic acting talents to shine and allow us to see them as complex, real characters.

Just saw this at an advanced screening in Long Beach and I must say the Jackass crew is back. This movie is exactly what I was expecting it to be. My friends and I debated whether or not the guys were too old but apparently they were offered enough money to not care much. This is just like Jackass Number 2 in that they got a big budget to do the set piece stunts. There is still the low key, sneak up on people pranks, but now in glorious slow motion. The set piece stunts are in bright and crisp 3D that really adds to the effect of whatever they are trying to do. As others have stated the intro is pretty cool but I was actually left wanting just a bit more. Note the paintballs though, in amazing 3D. This is Johnny, Ryan Dunn, Steve-o, Pontius, and Weeman’s show. Dave and Aaron end up getting hurt as usual but are awesome sports. There are more gross out and insane, painful stunts than pranks on unwitting public people, but a few of the funniest skits fall into the latter category. The midget couple at the bar is the funniest in the movie by far. These guys are as funny as always and their genuine friendship is really quite nostalgic at the end. Its been nearly 10 years since Jackass went off the air and these guys are really still at the top of their game. The entire theater was crying with laughter the entire film. I was invited to stay after for a post film discussion and one of the other people summed it up nicely by saying he felt that not a single skit was a misfire. Matt Hoffman, Jeff Tremaine, and Spike Jonze were in the crowd. Of the 25 or so people that stayed after the film, 22 thought it was the best of the trilogy.
