I walked into the theater with a closed mind I admit that I did not care for the J.J. Abrams 2009 Star Trek so I was not expecting much more from Into Darkness. First the Negatives The supersonic Loud explosions, crashes and fights were a bit over the top to true trek fans as Star Trek has always been about substance not visual tricks although in IMAX 3D they were impressive. Now the positives A Starfleet Officer sets off a explosion at a Starfleet records facility a library in essences. In a top brass meeting following that explosion Captain Kirk raises the question “A library why would anyone blow up a library? It’s then revealed that that library was not exactly a library and that Starfleet in that facility was a top secret unofficial branch of Starfleet called Section-31. Holy s**t Section-31 only hard core Trekkies will get that one they were revealed in the Star Trek Deep Space Nine series as a sort of secret Star Fleet CIA doing things that Star Fleet could not do answering to no one but themselves with no rules. While this meeting is going on in a high office building in San Francisco it’ s attacked by a single helicopter with a single assailant how could this be ? As we progress Captain Kirk is give the assignment of going to Kronos and launching a series of new photon torpedoes manufactured by Section-31. When they arrive at Kronos and do hand to hand combat with a patrol of Klingon Warriors and getting there asses kicked. Then someone arrives on the scene and singlehanded kicks the Klingon’s asses he then removes his face covering and to Kirk’s surprise it’s the same guy that was shooting up the conference from the helicopter. As we move forward it’s revealed that that superhero guy is indeed a superhero Noonien Singh Kahn. And in this alternate reality Star Trek universe still has his crew and want to be reunited with them. In reading reviews prior to seeing it I was expecting Mr. Spock and Lieutenant Uhura to jump each other’s bones at every chance this did not happen and they did their relationship perfect. This a good film a very good film it’s can be accepted by non Trek fans as a good action science film and there is enough Trek references to even the most hard core Trek fans. We even meet a certain female doctor friend of Captain Kirk who has a prominent role in Kirk future apparently in both realities. Go see this it is good

I am still a young man who grew up watching IRON MAN,Spider Man on fox Kids and specially iron man used to be my favorite super hero and Mandarin the super powerful evil villain, so thats why i was so eager to watch this Movie right from last year when i watched the trailer and boy was I disappointed? Black has ridiculed each and every person and character associated with the IRON MAN-3. I still don’t get it, just to please some kids section of audience or make it more family friendly u try to ruin one of the most vicious characters and make him a point of comedy so that u can get some more money from the kids section. Even Iron Man-2 seems much better to me. And the funny dialogs are not so funny anymore after i saw that idiotic twist in the second half. Pardon me for my English but seriously really disappointed seeing such a wonderful characters being made a laughing point just for the sake of good reviews or money.

A great movie even with the unnecessarily and perhaps outdated use of switches and manual instrumentation for Tom Cruise’s bubble cruiser, an almost nauseating voice-over narrative at the beginning unlike the acceptable to some voice over of Blade Runner (1982), a patently fake looking lunar moon, and the disappearance of a major female character occurring off camera. This is one of those movies where such flaws are easily overcome by the rest of the visual spectacle, artistic landscape and set design, and of course the storyline. What is fascinating about this tent-pole sci fi psychological action thriller extravaganza is that it isn’t all that original, but nevertheless with its tight fusion of previous incarnations that are so well weaved into the storyline, producing a substantive film with two compelling twists offering an American theme ending that it becomes more than its parts and becoming a very well made movie. There are strong elements taken from Total Recall (1990) and improved on, devoid of the stereotypical arch enemy and false persona and replaced both by an underlying emotional humanity as well as a detached alien presence. There are elements of The Matrix (1999) but not as eerily and epic-like presentation retaining more of simplicity and uncluttered landscape of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1982) but incorporating elements of awesomeness as found in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and psychological unbalancing as found in Source Code (2011). The twists in this movie is similar to that found in Moon (2009) which focused more on the singular psychological and ethical aspect of a man confronted with loneliness and in which Oblivion finds a way to expand of the more tortured and dichotomous incongruity of the multiplicity of human life or that of a man having to face up to what had been an entire illusion one’s existence as in Planet of the Apes (1968). Even so, Oblivion manages to retain a persistent theme of love and intimacy Fahrenheit 451 (1966) and as convoluted as Solaris (2002). The musical sound track resonates in places as symphonic as those found in Electric Dreams (1984) or Wavelength (1983). Other familiar themes may have been taken from Tom Cruise’s own Minority Report (2002) and Surrogates (2009) as well as one of the sci fi classics of all time Blade Runner (1982) that dwelt with human identity and emotional connections in a dystrophic future. As an afterthought, the voice-over at the beginning of the movie actually is quite clever and relevant if one ties it to the ending of the movie.

Perhaps more so than any other director in film history, Steven Spielberg has locked into that most desirable niche of movie-making: pleasing everyone at the same time. When his spectacular action-adventure Jurassic Park was first released in 1993, he left critics, film buffs, casual viewers, parents and children equally spellbound. Twenty years later, the film has been re-released in both 3D and IMAX, allowing a new generation to experience the magic, and old fans the chance to relive it again. Eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) has created the ultimate theme park on a secluded island, and he wants to offer a sneak preview to a select group of individuals (Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern). Of course, the prehistoric attractions don’t much appreciate being detained for the amusement of others, and begin to cause havoc as soon as they take the opportunity to escape from their enclosures. An extremely imaginative plot adapted from Michael Crichton’s novel of the same name, it sets the foundation for a rip-roaring battle for survival. For many viewers that first saw Jurassic Park as pre-teens, the greatest thrill will come from appreciating, to a greater degree, the way the film deftly builds suspense. Cleverly building up to the revelation of the ‘meatasauruses’ by stunning us with the visual treat of cuddly herbivores, when we do finally meet the imposing Tyrannosaurus, it is one of cinema’s most exhilarating set pieces, only to be topped some time later by the thrilling cat-and-mouse game in the kitchen. It is a testament to the incredible skill of the animatronics and visual effects team that the film’s most dated quality is the occasionally cheesy dialogue that burdens Lex and little brother Tim. The dinosaurs are clearly the main event, but the undercard of Jurassic Park spares no expense, with touches of class including Dr. Grant’s personal evolution from a child apathist to a fully-fledged family man and a miasma of Shelley-esque criticisms of man’s innate desire to play god while drunk on the illusion of total control. To call this the movie event of the year would be to make the grossest of understatements. Experiencing this glorious monument to total escapism on the world’s biggest cinema screen is simply mandatory for anyone was has ever felt goosebumps in a theater. Bring your kids- they’ll never forget it.

In the near future, a crack unit of anti-terrorism specialists are framed for a crime they did not commit. A few of them promptly escape from a devastating counterattack and flee back to Washington. Still wanted fugitives under the order of the President, the remaining G I Joes must uncover the truth and clear their name. Yes there are similarities to the premise of “The Losers” and “A-Team” but G I Joe Retaliation heaps in that familiar premise with a good dose of comic book action and blockbuster thrills. However, it’s loyalty to the G I Joe comic books cannot make us overlook the convoluted narrative, bland characters and overall inappropriate directing style. If G I Joe: Rise of Cobra captured the spirit of the cheesy 80s era Saturday morning cartoon, G I Joe Retaliation oozes with the feel of the grittier G I Joe comic books written by Larry Hama. The tone from the get go is one of desperation and tension. The stakes are high and there is little chance of the good guys winning, yet they will pull it off somehow. Sadly, that is not necessarily a good thing. Hama was enamored with his ninja characters and it shows here in the movie. Cutting between the Joes trying to clear their name and the ninjas on their quest to the Himalayas is like cutting between 2 very different movies. Only the most hardcore of G I Joe comic fans will “get it”. The film is littered with references to the comics (such as the Blind Master of Arashikage Clan, the look of Cobra Commander, etc) that will be lost on normal audience. Furthermore, this movie feels less like a sequel and more like a reboot of the franchise. How did Cobra turn into this vast underground terror organization after it was obliterated in the first movie? Why does everyone acknowledge Cobra Commander as supreme leader when in the first movie he only declares himself as “Commander” to one person (who aside from a brief cameo, never has an active role in this movie). While the story is a bit of a mess, the screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (writers of Zombieland) is very well written, mixing the occasional humor with down to earth banter that fits each character’s personality. Dwayne Johnson works best with their script as his character of Roadblock shares such a marvelous chemistry with Channing Tatum’s Duke. Jonathan Pryce shines as well playing both the President and his impostor. Sadly, the rest of the cast do not seem as invested in the story as the main leads. The bad guys seem underwhelming, the new G I Joe members Flint and Lady Jaye are overshadowed by Dwayne Johnson’s screen presence and Bruce Willis is barely there. All in all, it was a good script handled badly. The narrative suffers the same fate; it has some good underlying political themes about America’s international presence, attitude toward foreign intervention and nuclear disarmament. Yet these are only touch and go, never elaborated on or even satired. A little more “brains” in this blockbuster could have scored it more points. “Step Up” director Jon Chu seems out of his element directing a big action blockbuster. You got some cool visuals here but Jon Chu shoots them too tight and his camera-work too frantic for any of the action to shine. At least Stephan Sommers had a good grasp on how to showcase big action scenes with a good mix of wide angles and long shots. Chu loses them in blurry close ups of shoulders, elbows, and everything BUT the full action. Could it be a case of a director who is out of his element? He takes the screenplay and gives it such lousy pacing laced with a good measure of exposition. The dialogue heavy scenes seem long and drawn out. Convenient plot twists abound and one particular character has a logic defying switch of allegiance. Tone wise, the film can never seem to decide if it is going for a more realistic feel or comic book action. You have high flying stunts on a cliffside, bullet time shootouts, over the top villainous plots to blow up cities and rule the world, high octane vehicle combat, but at the same time you have scenes of characters just shooting at each other from cover like soldiers do in real life. The ninjas got this whole “realistic touch” thing the worst. After a spectacular deflect-the-shurikens-with-bullets scene, the ninjas Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow proceed to……..wrestle each other. Thats right, no kung fu, no high flying kicks or lightning fast fist cuffs. In the end, G I Joe Retaliation comes across as an overindulgent piece of fan fiction. The creative team seems more obsessed with sticking as close to the visuals of the comic books than to give a deep, character driven narrative. Whichever “genius” got a director best known for street dancing movies and that Justin Bieber biopic to come and direct a big budget action blockbuster ought to be fired. Fans will no doubt be willing to overlook all the flaws on the single notion that it adheres closely to the source material these fans have come to love.

The current score on IMDb is too low. (Why does that happen all the time??) This is a fairly good film. It’s worth about a 7.5. Saoirse Ronan was perfectly cast for this role as the sensitive, conflicted alien slowly gaining the trust of the human survivor group. Diane Kruger and William Hurt were also good. (Once again, I’m struck how so many Hollywood movies lately have non-American actors playing Americans. What’s that all about?) “The Host” is part of a new genre I would call “sci fi for chicks”. If it bothers you to see a “soft” science-fiction film with love-sick young people, noble suicides, impossibly handsome young men, aliens with emotions, etc., don’t go see this one. It’s the old male v. female dilemma: Should we kill the hated aliens or coax them out and make friends with them? There was not enough exposition at the start about the horrors of the alien invasion. The writers and producers seem to have assumed that moviegoers would understand why the characters want to “remain human” and why they would refer to a human-hosted alien as “it”. Perhaps it was better explained in the book. The device of Melinda’s consciousness remaining fully alert, and Wanda and Melinda actually talking to each other for our benefit, might put some moviegoers off. (I’m not sure. I haven’t read the other reviews.) However, once I suspended my disbelief, I was able to go with the flow. They threw the male viewers a bone: Kruger and Ronan, to start. there were a few car and motorcycle chases (involving futuristic-looking chrome vehicles), and shoot outs. Hey, this is a Hollywood movie, after all. The theme of humans hosting aliens is not original, but they took the concept in a different direction. The movie is slick and well made, but there were a few clichés and many, many aspects of the story that were glossed over, left unexplained or just not realistic. The survivors here were mostly young Hollywood pretty boys, not a ragged group of tough survivors (like on “Walking Dead”, for example.) Still, I appreciated some of the details of the “good alien” theme, like a society of honest and trustworthy aliens that doesn’t need cash to function, or where they will simply give your their car if you need it or where everyone drives at the speed limit. Good forbid we should have a society like that! Kill them! And I liked the part where the other seekers looked at the evil seeker (played by Kruger) and pointed out that she was getting a little too obsessed and after all they were the good guys. There are many species that coexist in symbiosis. It’s interesting to think that maybe it would do our species good.

I actually loved the trailers and couldn’t wait to see this movie. Though in the past many trailers have been top notch but the movie just didn’t match up. Well in the case of the Croods, the trailers were nice but the movie was just a great, brilliant and amazing feat. The animation quality is brilliant, excellent animation that is enchanting and magical. The story very moving and heartfelt and had some really emotional and moving scenes handled very intelligently. The characters are endearing and you just can’t help but love them all, absolutely lovable. This action packed adventure is just an epic and thrilling ride GUARANTEED to keep you (child and adult) at the edge of your seat. Breathtaking visuals and heart racing scenes. An adventure of a lifetime is all i can say. Spectacular and fun. The entire family dynamic of The Croods is so amazingly portrayed and extremely ratable. With educational snippets guaranteed to get kids interested in topics such as plate tectonics and continental shift and drift etc. And many heartwarming and yet smartly handled lessons to be learned along the way. What a great film. Now for the humor. It is brilliant, smart humor that will have you in stitches. I have not laughed that hard in a long long time. I laughed until i cried and no i am not exaggerating. The entire theater was in stitches booming with laughter. It was just great fun. The child in the row ahead of me commented to his mother how he was loving this amazing movie to which his mother replied that she too thought it was awesome! The college kids who came as a group were in hysterics and seemed to enjoy this movie just as much. Even a grandmother who sat next to me couldn’t control herself and was enjoying this great family film with the rest of us. To put it plainly, the whole family will love it. It is the perfect family movie: smart, hilarious, sweet and emotional. And whats great is you will enjoy it even if you go on your own. So many individuals came to watch it on their own and they enjoyed it as much as the families did. Usually many comedy movies will have a chuckle here and there but this one had myself and the rest of the audience in fits of uncontrollable laughter from start till finish. One of those films where time just flies by and since you are thoroughly enjoying yourself, you just don’t notice the time pass. GREAT WORK DREAMWORKS! They really are stepping it up as of late. ROTG was fantastic and now this film is carrying on the trend of brilliant animated films. Looking forward Dreamworks Studios next endeavor and if this film is anything to go by, i see many more great films ahead from this studio.

I didn’t go into this movie with too many expectations because I assumed it was a younger kid movie and I was not within the target audience, but I discovered that I liked this movie more than I expected! Oz the Great and Power Full gives audiences a look into the story that set up the original “Wizard of Oz” movie (although according to some friends, it is a completely different prequel of the original than portrayed in “Wicked” the musical). Parts of the movie are animated, parts are live action, but most is a combination of the two. Pros -Many elements (phrases, iconic symbols, characters) were similar to and foreshadowed what occurs in the original “Wizard of Oz” movie. (One of the main reasons I really liked this movie) – Animated parts of the movie were very colorful and visually beautiful -Cast for the most part was able to play their characters well -Loved the way the movie started out black and white Cons -Costumes fell a little short in my opinion. I felt like more detailed clothing and props could have been used -SPOILER: Where were the ruby slippers? -SPOILER (and opinion) Ending the movie with the house falling on Evanora, ready to pick up right into the original ‘Wizard of Oz” film, would have been a way to make the movie even better I recommend this movie for pretty much anyone, but I believe that people who know the original story of “Wizard of Oz” would enjoy it even more. Some scenes could scare small children, although this is not really a scary movie; there is plenty of humor.

First of all, let me first say that while I enjoyed the LOTR trilogy, and admired the directorial and technical greatness of it, I’m no LOTR fanboy, and I also recognize its flaws. I’m saying this so that one understands that I’m not the type of person who will blindly speak greatly of any film of the Tolkien/Jackson series if I don’t feel it deserves it. This being said, I have difficulties understanding some of the negative professional reviews which said The Hobbit is a failed attempt, and not as good as LOTR. The artistic and directing style are exactly the same (so I won’t comment on this more). I also wasn’t expecting to like the 48 fps since I’m the kind of guy who squints even at high definition TVs, but surprisingly, I thought it looked great in The Hobbit, and I think 48 fps is the future. There are slow moments in The Hobbit, broken regularly by excitingly over the top action scenes. Again, just like LOTR – so I don’t see why one would like the original trilogy and not The Hobbit. The Hobbit is perhaps a little less dark in tone than LOTR, considering the source material which is more of a children’s book, but it’s clearly not a children’s movie anyway, and displays many exciting and stressful moments. It also offers something more than the LOTR, that is five genuinely important villains right then and there. The dragon Smaug, in this first film, is like Sauron in the LOTR. A distant, mysterious figure who is the ultimate goal of the quest, whom we don’t see much of yet, but we know it’s going to be brutal. The “necromancer” is mostly alluded. Those who know the book will know who that is, and he’ll surely be important in the sequels. Azog, the giant orc, is a main villain and is much more appealing than the Uruk-hai chief in Fellowship of the Ring, or any other orc villain in the LOTR series. The Goblin King also has a strong key role in the movie. And of course, Gollum, who’s riddle scene with Bilbo is fantastic. Martin Freeman as Bilbo is superb and there couldn’t be a better choice. The rest of the cast is pitch perfect as well. While the 13 dwarfs are too many for us to get to know each and every one of them well enough by the end of this first movie, I didn’t feel it was a downer. We got to know at least a third sufficiently – and I’m sure we’ll get to learn about and appreciate the rest in the subsequent films – this allows us to still have characters to discover later on. Anyway, great film. I think it’s better than Fellowship, and I’ll be seeing it again for sure and can’t wait for the sequels.

Over Thanksgiving, I’m sure everybody had something to be thankful for. “For what” you may ask? The final chapter of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Part 2, that’s what. Fans of the series – the films, and the books by Stephanie Meyer that they were based on – will be thankful that it ends in a way that will satisfy them, although they’ll also be saddened that the series is now over. Those who hate the franchise will be thankful that it’s all finally over. Bottom line: If you love the franchise, you’re not going to be disappointed. If you can’t stand it, this will not change your mind. Taking place immediately after Breaking Dawn Part 1 concluded, Bella Swan, after giving birth to her daughter Reneesme, has completed her transformation from human to vampire. She adjusts to her new life with her husband Edward and his family fairly quickly, but has trouble with the fact that her friend Jacob (a werewolf) has imprinted on Reneesme… it’s creepy. Soap opera struggles have to wait, though. The Volturi, the high council of vampire law, is planning an attack against the child, fearing that it may pose a threat to their kind, and their secrecy. To protect Reneesme, the Cullens assemble allies to serve as witnesses in their defense. Like each of the other Twilight movies, the movie is ridiculous. The acting, action, and even the dialogue have tendencies to go over the top, and produce unintentional laughs. If you enjoy that sort of thing, this will suit you just fine. Still, this is the best looking film thus far. The photography is great, and considering Guillermo Navarro shot it, how could it not be? In addition to all of this, the acting is inconsistent between the stars, many of which seem to gradually accept just how ridiculous these movies really are. The fact still remains that there are so many characters to keep track of, that they can’t, and it goes without saying that the supporting actors, three in particular, are more interesting than the three leads. Ashley Greene hits all the right notes as Alice, my absolute favorite character from the books. Billy Burke earns his place as series MVP, as Charlie Swan is the one character that every movie got exactly right. Still, Michael Sheen is the clear standout as Volturi leader Aro. You can see, plain on his face, he does not take this at all seriously, and he camps it up to levels of Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. What a delight he is. In Conclusion, I want to talk about one thing in this movie that rubbed me the wrong way. And here’s where we get into major spoiler territory. If you don’t care that the movie will be spoiled for you, feel free to read. If you haven’t seen it, but you want to, I suggest you stop reading now. I would rarely go into such detail, but this one thing made me furious. So, before the climax of this movie begins, Alice (who has the power to see visions of the future) brings evidence that Reneesme will not be harmful to their species to Aro (who has the ability to read an individual’s memories). It turns out that no evidence will sway Aro, so an epic battle of the Cullen vampires and the wolves against the Volturi begins. This is easily the best sequence the Twilight saga has ever given us. Epic, beautifully staged, and honestly very intense, this ten minute sequence alone was making this the best movie yet. And so, just as Aro is about to be killed, we cut back to him and Alice, with the two sides still standing off. It turns out that the whole battle was just a vision that Alice had, one that will happen should Aro attack. In short, this resolution is the most ridiculous, most frustrating, and most insulting cop out that you can imagine. How did these people think that could possibly work? Did they think no one would question it? That we’d just accept it? Well, newsflash! There is no way to accept it. There is no way to defend it, either. With all of that in mind, if you’re just in the mood for a simple guilty pleasure, this one’s not too bad. At least, for the most part it’s not that bad. For me, everything was going good until that foolish twist.

The only good thing about Skyfail, is the new Coke add before the movie. For the sake of not repeating what has been said before, let me simply state the following, what is James Bond? In my mind he’s suppose to be “The Man”, a slick, suave, highly trained, highly skilled, Secret Agent from Mi6, who with the aid of a really cool “never been seen before” gadget from the ever comical Q, defeats the enemy or at least makes their lives difficult. An agent who always accomplishes his goal, with a fair bit of womanizing on the side, funny one liners and super exciting expeditions etc. In short he is the guy every man wants to be and every woman can’t resist. In this installment he literally fails at every single task assigned to him, he loses the list, gets shot, has depression, turns into a drunk whilst AWOL, comes back, fails all the training tests assigned to him scoring 40%. Then Fails to protect/keep alive the only girl worth mentioning in the movie. Then he captures only to lose again the baddie (Who is a Spanish or is it Mexican ex Mi6 agent, how does that happen?) in broad daylight, then he barely gets M away to his “fortress” family home in Scotland, where there’s only a single Scottish (With out an accent of any kind) gamekeeper with one gun, where he fails to keep M alive (Great choice), the only thing he accomplishes all movie long is to kill the baddie, with an knife after not sustaining hypothermia some how, who was already trying to kill himself, so no points scored there. Does this sound like our British secret agent hero? As technology move forward into a TRON like age, Bond and Q moves into the 50’s. The best you can do is a gun with 3 LED lights and a radio the size of a small cellphone? The radio was invented in the 1800’s pal. It feels like this movie was shot in the 50s with a 70 year old director and his 32 year old daughter smitten with twilight, having said that Twilight was better, much better! The movie ends with bond being assigned a new mission, from the new M. M must be thinking “Now this is exactly the type of guy I want protecting our country, the guy who’s getting old, can’t shoot straight, has issues, is an alcoholic, poses way too much, has no skills other than running through walls, and the uncanny ability not to die, and to boot killed my predecessor . . .” The only thing Secret about Bond is how on earth it managed to get its rating, at time of this writing its 8.1, did they pay 100 000 people off to go vote? Without a doubt the WORST BOND YET!

A really interesting concept for a movie, with an incredible ensemble of talent to provide the voices; however, this film pales in comparison to other animated films currently in the theaters. I enjoyed this film; however, ‘Wreck It, Ralph’ was far more superior on almost every scale imaginable (plot, humor, content, graphics, nostalgia, etc). The “Guardians” are a group of immortals comprised of North (Santa Claus) voiced by Alec Baldwin, Bunny (The Easter Bunny) voiced by Hugh Jackman, Tooth (The Tooth Fairy) voiced by Isla Fisher, and Sandy (The Sandman) who gestures rather than speaks. Their whole existence on the planet is the protection the children of the planet; however, they can only exist if the children of the world still believe in them. Once the children no longer believe that a Guardian is real, their facade, magical powers and abilities will diminish, and start to fade away. The villain of this film is Pitch Black (voiced by Jude Law). He is the keeper of nightmares. He once reigned supreme during the Dark Ages; however, the ‘Guardians’ have been able to keep him under control for several centuries. Pitch has been able to strengthen his powers by manipulating the dream powers of Sandy, The Sandman. His goal is to methodically zap the powers of each ‘Guardian’ one-by-one, by having the children of the world start to doubt their existence; while simultaneously getting his presence into their mindset thus making him a stronger force to be reckon with. Once Pitch Black destroys the ‘Guardian’ alliance, the children of the world will be at his mercy. Perhaps the two (2) best things that this film has going it are Santa (North) and the Easter Bunny (Bunny). Both are great characters. The scenes showing North, his Yeti staff (which actually do all the work at the North Pole), and his incompetent elves (which I just adored); is simply genius. The rivalry between North and Bunny is great comedic levity, and adds much candor to the storyline and plot. Making Bunny a 6-foot tall, boomerang-throwing Australian accented entity was an interesting choice. The decision of Dreamworks to release this first film during the Holiday Season is questionable at best, because this film is in no way a holiday movie. The timeframe for this film is three (3) days prior to Easter… I can only assume that Dreamworks felt that having a movie poster featuring Santa on it would lure family audiences into the theater seats. So be warned, this film really has nothing to do with Christmas!!!! Again, this is not a bad film; however, it’s not a great film either. I would wait, and save seeing this film for home viewing. I’d much rather pay to see ‘Wreck It, Ralph’ a second time than suggest that you spend your hard earned money to pay and see ‘Rise of the Guardians’ in theaters. Just my personal opinion.

I bought the book when it was first being touted as a literary gem but then decided not to read it, so I have nothing to gauge how well Ang Lee did in interpreting the book. That said, this is one of the most endearing movies I’ve ever seen. My first thought having just seen it was, thank God some studio didn’t get a hold of it first to do an American take on the book. This movie so deserves and demands its setting and foreign lead actors. I admit I probably would have enjoyed one of our better young leads in the role of Pi, but I’m much better off having grappled with the Indian chosen by Lee who, for some reason, populates this movie with everything from Mexicans, Indians, Japanese and Anglos to tigers, hyenas, orangutans and zebras, but not one Chinese person. I thought that a little odd but perhaps the books that way too. I saw the 2D version mainly because I was expecting some exploration of the god issue, but I was mostly disappointed in that. The talk of religion is very brief and not very interesting. What was interesting is the survival story and the boy’s relationships with wild animals. I had no idea whether for the most part I was watching a real tiger or not. Let’s just say that if Lee had to wait for the tiger to do everything he does in this movie, he by rights should still be out there filming. Someone with a real love for animals and an eye for their behavior clearly had a hand in making these scenes look real. And then there are the shots at sea. The sea rises in great swells and you would think Pi is actually in a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific being carelessly tossed around by a violent storm; it’s truly masterful, unprecedented filmmaking. Even my wife who is no friend to animals thought the movie went by quickly and was happy to have seen it.

First off, yes, much better than the first…. thank god, more locations, funnier and better put together. No time from opening credits, its straight into the action, which is more epic imo, and is what should have been seen in the first film but maybe due to a low budget we were subjected to a lesser affair The team work well, all of them and Hemsworth does really well as the new boy on the block and second time round and you kind of know these guys. Arnie, bruce are seen more but are not seen as much as the usual gang, and li is seen the least. Norris is great, seen here and there, great entrance and more of a cameo, and van damme makes good his role as the villain. The story pretty much straight forward, better than the first, but nothing special, some dialogue was hard to hear, and sly does try to be serious in some scenes which got a laugh and I don’t think its how it was intended but its not that much of a big deal really as there are funny moments in the film, more so than the first film. Fight scenes were better this time round, not too prolonged, timed well, and the one on ones didn’t drag on too long. Sly & van damme’s fight could have been a bit longer but I guess after all the chaos leading up to that point it was sufficient enough without getting too silly, reminded me of a Rocky fight here and there….he he One liners were good, dolph was great, the girl is good also, be good to see her in exp3, locations and sets fab, cgi was not obvious and edited well. One thing I will say is sly does have issues coming across as funny and I don’t know why. He’s funny in real life and was funny in rocky but its hit and miss and it shows here in some scenes. Its not 10/10 in my book. Maybe when i see it again it may be better in my mind, but like i say a better story would of helped If there is a 3rd, I would like to see more of a story if that is at all possible, see what you think guys when its out, but it’s a big improvement on the first and that’s a good sign

With 2009’s “Coraline” and now “ParaNorman,” the artists at LAIKA, Inc. have asserted themselves as some of the best minds in contemporary animation. While not as cerebral as Pixar’s best works, LAIKA’s two features achieve the same great feat that the productions of that preeminent studio are known for: transcending the “family film” mold by actively appealing to every member of the family, rather than just the children. Like “Coraline,” “ParaNorman” is tonally darker than the average animated feature–complete with real-world bullying and foreboding supernatural creatures like ghosts, zombies, and a witch–but its ample comedic relief and spirited action sequences ensure that the movie never descends to the macabre depths of its Henry Selick-helmed predecessor. The eponymous protagonist (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), has a peculiar gift: he can interact with ghosts. This behavior relegates Norman to outcast status at school, where he is picked on by meanie Alvin (Christopher Mintz Plasse), and troubles his parents (Jeff Garlin and Leslie Mann), though they dismiss his living room conversations with his deceased grandma (Elaine Stritch) as a phase rather than a reason for psychiatric evaluation. Norman’s paranormal sensitivity comes in handy when a centuries-old curse cast upon his town by a witch (Jodelle Ferland) comes to fruition, causing a pack of zombies to roam the streets. Given his prior experience with the dead and intimate knowledge of the curse, thanks to interactions with a local eccentric (John Goodman) who had been warding it off for years, Norman is the only one who can save his fellow citizens from havoc. LAIKA once again uses stop-motion animation to gorgeous effect, with bold colors and immaculate character design (Norman’s only friend, the pudgy Neil, is a real treasure). The studio’s visuals have become even more cinematic since “Coraline,” thanks to directors Chris Butler and Sam Fell’s adoption of the ‘Scope aspect ratio to allow for more complex compositions and efforts to minimize the drawbacks of stop-motion (particularly strobing). Even the 3-D effects are bright and pleasant, if unnecessary. “ParaNorman” is every bit as visually accomplished as the more technically complex computer animated films from Pixar and DreamWorks. But for as beautiful as “ParaNorman” is on the surface, it wouldn’t be the film that it is without its lovable cast of characters. Inhabiting a relatively straightforward (albeit well-told) story, they make the proceedings feel fresh every step of the way. Norman is a spunky and sympathetic protagonist, but the supporting characters are even more appealing. Norman’s Barbie-doll of an older sister and Neil’s jock of an older-brother, voiced by Anna Kendrick and Casey Affleck, respectively, are particularly funny — stereotypes at first glance, but revealing of many uniquenesses as they become involved in the action plot. An hysterically delivered last-minute revelation about Affleck’s character is truly ballsy and will undoubtedly alienate socially conservative parents. Apart from the richly spun personalities, there are comedic references aplenty for adult viewers to chew on while their younger counterparts sit back and enjoy the simple mechanizations of the story. Horror fans will be in heaven, as there are numerous sight gags that allude to late-‘70s and early-‘80s genre staples like “Halloween,” “Friday the 13th,” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” There are also more general quips that tackle subjects like Irritable Bowel Syndrome and adult video stores, which will hopefully fly right over kids’ heads. “ParaNorman” may prove too frightening for children under age 8 or 9–after all, it’s essentially a zombie movie, albeit a toned-down one–but it is otherwise a perfect selection for audiences of any age. The film is never groundbreaking, but it achieves what it sets out to do with sharp storytelling and eye-popping visuals. My only complaint is that it should have been released in October, when it would have functioned as a perfect warm-up for Halloween. Alas, viewers will just have to get in a spooky mood two months early, because “ParaNorman” is not to be missed.

This is truly a case of great actors who are left out there in the cold by a director, who essentially does not even try to respect them and the audience’s intelligence by giving them something original or interesting. Tony Gilroy had written not only the first three Bourne films but the great Michael Clayton as well but here, it is obvious that he is on a destructive ego trip. Gilroy is more interested in making people see on how smart he is as a scriptwriter and filmmaker than actually try to entertain and stay true to what made the other Bourne films special. With that destructive mind set, Gilroy forgets that you need faith in your actors and the material they are working with in order to drive the movie forward. Gilroy also commits the biggest sin of all, which is to never underestimate the intelligence of your audience. The script by Gilroy and his brother Dan tries to be cutting edge in scientific jargon and smart dialog but ends up with so many inconsistencies and flimsy characterization that you have to double back twice to see if Gilroy actually had a hand in the original “Bourne Trilogy”. The characters in this film are only there to get from A to B and none of them with the exception of Rachel Weisz and Jeremy Renner (Who you can clearly see are both working beyond the call of duty to make something out of their paper-thin roles) has any real purpose at all. Poor Edward Norton is only there to bark orders and you can clearly see how frustrated he is with his role in certain scenes. The direction is not even very good, with pacing problems and a running time that excessively too long for its own good. The action scenes (The few of them in the film) do not jar well and are boring to say the least. My advice to Universal, if there has to be a sequel, bring back Rachel Weisz and Jeremy Renner (Who both deserve medals for their efforts in making this lazy, self indulgent script work) and get rid of Tony Gilroy, who clearly does not respect anybody other than himself. You might have a better movie if you do.

Christopher Nolan has outdone himself with this one. At 3.30 in the morning, I was tired. Just getting out of it, I’ve never been so awake. Perhaps what set this film apart from his other films was that it had a genuine emotional heartbeat. I felt that this was a flaw of Nolan’s other films – the vision of emotion was there, but it was hollow. In this I bought it. I felt it, hero and villain alike. Christian Bale was typically brilliant as Batman, and I felt that Bruce Wayne was more heavily embraced in this final installment. Bale added emotional depth to the character – a plot point that I think went astray in The Dark Knight – picking up from the development made in Batman Begins. Tom Hardy as Bane was quite simply, terrifying. No longer a dunderhead “enforcer”, but one of the criminal masterminds behind “Gotham’s Reckoning”, coupled with a physical dominance strong enough to send shivers down your spine. Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle defied my expectations. Hands up who was not entirely convinced that that girl from the Princess Diaries could handle an intensely physical role like Catwoman. But here I am, hugely impressed. She added immeasurably to the value of the film. Marion Cotillard fulfilled the role of Miranda Tate admirably, though I suspect this was the most underdeveloped character of the film – though after watching, I can see why. The unsung hero of The Dark Knight Rises is Michael Caine as Alfred. A heartfelt performance that helps drive the emotional content of the film, helping Nolan sell his most well-rounded film to date. Caine’s performance in both presence and absence. Special mention goes to Joseph Gordon Levitt, who is consistently proving himself to be a big player in the Hollywood game. His role as officer Blake felt like there could’ve been more, but it may just have come all a bit much. It was a great performance, and Levitt sunk his teeth into role. If you can, go see this in IMAX. If any film was to sell the format to skeptics, The Dark Knight Rises would be IT. I’m happy Nolan stuck to his guns and shot in 2D. 3D would have been unnecessary. I suppose at this point, I have to turn my focus on Nolan. If he ever reads this… aspiring filmmaker to filmmaker, I’ve never been so envious, jealous in all my life. It’s a film that leaves me floundering, wondering what I could possibly do to get anywhere near this ballpark. Well done. I think an Oscar Nomination is in order. From here, I’m not sure what to expect of the future. Does our imagination carry us forward, or do the studios? Time will tell.

First of all, if you are like me, and were disappointed with this movie, you may be surprised at the ratings on IMDb. For example- The gem of British comedy, Flushed Away, was ranked worse than this. Both Madagascar movies, were ranked worse than this. The third Ice Age installment, was ranked one point off this. Really? Folks, I’m not going to sugar coat this thing. It was a awful end to a great saga. With the Ice Age movies, I notice each one of them seems to slip deeper and deeper into unrealistic expectations, making it almost impossible for children to believe what is on the screen, as I was doing with the children I had taken with me. First Ice Age – Animals return child to parent. Quite simple, sweet. Second- World is melting, somehow a giant boat will save them all. Pretty weird, but watchable. Third- Dinosaurs under the ice. Right, that’s going off the mark. But the character Buck saved the movie with brilliant British comedy and writing. And then there’s this trainwreck. Sid, Manny and Diego, and a Granny of Sids, find themselves battling a ship full of pirates who enjoy singing and bossing little furry creatures around. My god. I don’t even know where to start with this thing. First off, Manny has had the ol ‘Disney parent syndrome’ slapped on him, and he is dangerously worried about his teenager daughter, Peaches, constantly. We’ve seen it done in every single daddy-daughter movie. They even had the gall to send Crash and Eddie to watch her frequently. It’s like they had just watched Lion King 2, swapped some characters around, then claimed it original. Peaches problem is just about the most predictable teenage story in the book. > Girl finds cool group. > Ditches lame friends, becomes popular > Regrets it later. Yeah, it’s pretty lame. But thats just the start of this…analysis. Right, so they get separated as continents are drifting at a alarming rate, complete with a pop culture reference about each one which was clearly existent back in the BC. Sid gets dumped with this god awful Granny relative, who is stealing screen time as Sid’s side comic relief. She is not funny. Sid is funny. Do not add TWO funny characters in a troupe, it never works. They come across this-ugh, pirate ship, run by a monkey, an elephant seal, a kangaroo, and a predictably female saber tooth tiger. It is awful from there. This installment even has a song, too. The song itself actually wasn’t so bad, but it is SO not in an Ice Age nature to do so, as no other movies did it, that people just kinda were confused as to whether it was a musical. There’s a lovely cheesy song at the end too, don’t worry. It’ll suck any remaining dignity out of the movie. I’m not even sure if Ice Age 2 or this one is worse. Probably this one, because everything is just so unrealistic. Kids in the audience were even realizing it. It’s just a load of action, clichés, corny family messages, and very very predictable rubbish. Keep your money.

Greetings again from the darkness. The big debate seems to be whether it is too soon for the Spider-Man franchise to be re-booted. It was just 10 years ago when Tobey Maguire first appeared as Spidey and a mere 5 years ago when director Sam Raimi delivered the last leg in his trilogy. Obviously the reason to re-boot starts with “doll” and ends with “ars”. It is more interesting to decide if this is an improvement over the previous series. We must first look at Spider-man himself. Played here by Andrew Garfield, we get a more thoughtful Peter Parker and a more athletic Spidey version than we had with Maguire. As usual, my pet peeve is that Garfield is a 28 year old man cast as an 18 year old high school science nerd. Looking past that, Garfield manages to pull off the stunts without looking too much like a real super hero. So that’s a plus. Luckily for him, his scenes with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) work because Ms. Stone is such a super talent. She makes everything she is in, just a little bit better. Next we look at the villain. Rhys Ifans plays scientist Dr Curt Connors, who transforms into Lizard in the quest to regenerate growth of his lost right arm. He was once partners with Peter’s dad in their research into reptilian genetics. While Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) from Spider-Man 2 is still my favorite villain in the series, it’s clear that Lizard is certainly capable of frightening the younger viewers, so parents beware. It should also be noted that Dr Curt Connors was played by Dylan Baker in the Sam Raimi trilogy. Lastly, we look at the story. This take is much more personal and provides detail to the backstory of Peter Parker. We learn how (but not exactly why) he lost his parents (Campbell Scott and Embeth Davidtz) and see how he came to be raised by Aunt May (Sally Field) and Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen). We see how he and Gwen Stacy come together and learn that she is every bit his equal intellectually, if not a notch above. Casting Dennis Leary as Gwen’s Police Chief dad works as Leary and Garfield exchange barbs at the table. Peter is still a photographer, but this time for the school instead of The Daily Bugle … whose logo makes an appearance on TV. Director Marc Webb was somehow selected for this despite his only feature film being (500) Days of Summer … not exactly a film known for its CGI. Admittedly, the CGI used here is less rush and cluttered than in previous Spidey films and many of the stunts look to be real stunts instead of the fake stuff. The closing credit cookie clearly sets up the sequel, though I can only guess that the shadowy figure is Norman Osborn. That’s still up for debate.

Everything about Brave is different from the Pixar norm, save the unequaled attention to detail and quality. The Disney-Pixar animated feature focuses on Princess Merida as she searches for a way to change her fate. In a journey of magic, adventure and family, the fiery Scot is launched into the ranks of the elite Disney princesses. As odd and understandably foreign as the accents felt watching the early previews for the movie, the voice acting was executed following, creating very real characters that fit their animated molds perfectly. By the end of the movie, what once sounded foreign blended into the scenery and visuals to create a completely immersing environment. In fact, amid the magic spells and tall tales of times gone by, it’s the historical, Scottish feeling that made Marida’s journey and transformation (and that of her mother) that much more tangible and familiar. Underneath the folk-tale storyline lies the same life lessons that ring true for young and old. Though the movie heavily focuses on a mother- daughter relationship, it’s not just for girls anymore than Mulan was. Merida is a true Disney princess, with gumption, heart and an uncanny connection with nature, but the story could have been told from a male perspective and rung just as true, making it easy to empathize with Pixar’s first female lead. As has been the case with almost every other one of their movies, the company has reinvented the standard for animated visuals. The environments are based on real Scottish landmarks, adding real depth to the story, and the colors are as bright as they are grounded, creating a wonderfully real world. Such visuals lend credence to the upcoming 3D re-release of Finding Nemo, though not much, but also show just how far the studio has come. All of the elements put together, Brave is a different sort of movie than many were expecting. More focused on a single pair and their quest together, not to mention darker by far, the story of Merida was a leap of faith for the once small studio. Many will have their doubts, left wanting another heart wrenching love story from Up or creative take on a beat to death genre like The Incredibles. That was never the purpose. Just as with every one of their award-winning films (Cars 2 notwithstanding), a new movie means a new chapter, new story and new style of film. Taken for what it is, Brave is a remarkable step into a whole new style of movie, proving the creative teams at Pixar will continue to write their own fate.

Description
Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman and the rest of their gang return in the third installment of the “Madagascar” series, and yes they are still trying to get back home to New York City. This film has them traveling with a group of circus animals all throughout Europe on the run from a French animal hunter who has killed every animal and has mounted their head on her wall, except for a lion. This movie stars the voice talents of Ben Stiller (Tower Heist, Tropic Thunder), Chris Rock (Grown ups, The Longest Yard), David Schwimmer (Friends, John Carter), Jada Pinkett Smith (Ali, Collateral), Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat, Bruno), Cedric the Entertainer (Larry Crowne, Ice Age), and Bryan Cranston (Drive, Breaking Bad). Everyone did a great job with their characters and it was a blast to hear all these familiar voices in a film together again. I have been a fan of the previous “Madagascar” films, and that still is the case, but I really didn’t have any hype for this movie because from the trailers, it didn’t really look that good. I am glad to say that it is the complete opposite of that. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed film from start to finish and thought that for certain audiences, the film is perfect. If you are a younger person (12 and under) the movie will entertain and make you laugh the entire time. Now for the other demographic (13 and up), the film is still a really fun experience having jokes that adults would get, as well as some really funny situations. The “Madagascar” series has been known to be over the top, but “Madagascar 3″ takes the cake for being the most over the top one yet. You can not simply go into this movie expecting a toned down film featuring animals that can talk and doing anything that humans can. You have to go into this film with an open mind and just enjoy the ride. I found myself laughing constantly throughout the film and I couldn’t help but have a smile on my face the entire time. This movie made me feel like I was a kid again and that is one of the best feelings there is. This is easily the best movie in the series in my opinion. What really blew me away though was something that wasn’t crucial to the movie, and that was the 3D. This is probably some of the best 3D I have seen in a film. I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to pop out next. If you see this film, please do yourself a favor and see the 3D version of it, you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend this film to all ages. Whether you are a kid or an adult, you will find enjoyment in this film.

Growing up I remember never quite liking Disney’s “Snow White”. Yes, the movie was sort of cute, but the heroine was way too sickly sweet in my opinion. Snow White had grace, beauty and kindness, but because of her complete lack of flaws she came across as boring. So I ended up rooting for the evil Queen instead. Universal Pictures’ “Snow White and the Huntsman” was promoted as a movie where Snow White got to be independent, strong and brave. In the trailers you saw Snow White (Kristen Stewart) preparing an army for battle, fighting and yelling. They actually made it seem like they had made Snow White a two-dimensional character that was more than a pretty face. So why did I still end up rooting for the evil Queen? The main problem with the movie is the casting of Snow White. While they never implied that Snow White actually is fairer than the Queen (Charlize Theron) physically – they emphasized more on her inner beauty and kind spirit – they couldn’t have meant to make Queen Ravenna more sympathetic too. Since Stewart is such a limited actress she has trouble making Snow White likable and relatable, mainly because of her mannerisms (eye-rolling, mouth-breathing, monotone voice). Theron however is a nuanced actress that conveys every single one of Ravenna’s personality traits and feelings effortlessly. There have been criticisms of her over-acting, but I felt like the character was supposed to be dramatic and Theron’s performance captured that perfectly. She makes Ravenna a tragic but heartbreaking portrait of a woman too obsessed with youth and beauty for her own good (there is a very sad back-story of how she came to be as obsessed with beauty as she is.) Story-wise the movie doesn’t stray far from the classic fairytale. The story of how Snow White’s mother dies and her father then remarries a beautiful but evil woman has remained intact. The part where the evil queen has a huntsman going after Snow White for her heart has been emphasized more with the huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) now becoming an ally/love interest for Snow White. The poison apple, the dwarfs and the prince all make appearances too. But the ending is more of an actual battle (horses, swords et cetera) than in the classic fairytale, and it also needs to be said that the movie has an overall darker feel. Apart from Theron’s performance, the movie’s main strength lies in its visuals. The set decoration, locations and editing are all breathtaking – but Colleen Atwood’s costumes are the main draw. Never in my life have I seen such detailed and beautiful gowns as those Ravenna wears. They add an air of luxury and indulgence to the movie and are a shoe-in for a “Best Costume”-nomination at next years’ Oscars. The music score is fantastic too, and James Newton Howard proves just like he did in “The Hunger Games” what a great composer he is. Overall “Snow White and the Huntsman” could use a better lead actress and some cutting (the middle part of the movie feels dragged out) but remains an entertaining, adventurous film for fans of epic fantasy movies. And fans of Charlize Theron shouldn’t miss it for the world – she proves that she is not only the fairest of them all but one of the best actresses in contemporary Hollywood.

If you’re a fan of epic adventure movies, then this is your dream come true. This is the type of film you fantasized about growing up! It really is the ultimate superhero mash-up and it’s done perfectly. The makers of this film certainly understand spectacle but they also get the intricacies and depth these type of characters can provide. That right there assures this instant classic will be thought of as the best as well as the biggest film of 2012. The depth of this movie really did surprise me. Even though the high quality of the actors involved and there previous work as these very same characters seemed to indicate otherwise, I was expecting a wild popcorn movie. I was wrong in thinking it was too much to convey in one film. I couldn’t be more pleased because they balanced everything masterfully. Sure, there’s the popcorn fun we were all expecting but there’s also a definite soul to the film and a smart plot as well. It’s truly a stupendous movie regardless of genre. Marvel did it, they pulled off the culmination of a master plan that’s been taking shape for years. They deliver a movie the likes of which we’ve never seen before and as good of a film that’s ever been made in its genre. There’s a reason this grand of a movie has never been attempted before now. How do you fully flesh out, care about and establish this vast group and still deliver a fun, crisp and coherent story? It’s extremely difficult to navigate that edge-of-your-seat excitement while at the same time caring about each one of the characters and their struggles. One of the most impressive aspects of The Avengers is that they managed to get each hero their time in the spotlight and their own character arc. Every single main lead steps up and is treated with remarkable intelligence and given room to shine. I loved that the stakes in this film are ridiculously high and the threat so impressive that there really is a need for these diverse characters to come together. That could have been a stumbling block in terms of story but it’s treated just right. It’s also a great idea that they chose to introduce all the characters to the audience as if you’ve never seen them before. Sure, the other films set up and give depth to each character but even if you missed their solo films, you’ll still know and care about them in this movie. It’s also wonderful that everything is as big as it should be. This truly is the comic book epic of our lifetime (the fanboy version of Gone With The Wind circa 1939 if you will) and it all shows up on screen. Everything looks GREAT and feels epic. The equipment (love that Helicarrier), the relationships, the stars, the characters themselves and the battles are all huge and as fully mesmerizing as they should be. There are scenes that are emotional and there are scenes that are going to make any audience member scream “BADASS!” and mean it. I’m serious when I say that the big, explosive moments are as grand as they should be but it’s the smaller character moments in this film that really take it to another level. At this point, we’ve all seen how good some CG action can get but grounding it with a great story and with meaningful quieter moments is what makes a movie good. That’s the ace up the Avengers sleeve. This is NOT some CGI video game movie. Cut out the action and I’d still want to see this movie. So, it’s safe to say that they are replicating the comic book experience on the big screen. Years of depth coupled with spectacle and advanced fiction is a treat for non-comic book and comic book fans alike. That’s is The Avengers greatest power… the ability to entertain all comers!

Having loved Aardman’s other work, especially Wallace and Gromit, Creature Comforts, Chicken Run and Shaun the Sheep, I was much looking forward to The Pirates! And I found myself loving it. Apart from sagging slightly in the pace in the middle with a couple of scenes that could’ve done with more punch perhaps, it has all the attributes that made me love Aardman in the first place. For instance, The Pirates! is a marvellous looking film, you could really tell that a lot of creativity and effort went into it. The colours and backgrounds are plentiful and rich with always something interesting to look at, and the character designs are appealing with the title character reminding of a youthful Wallace with hair and a beard. The 3D is one of the rare instances where it enhances the visuals and action rather than detract from it. Theodore Shapiro’s music is enough to rouse the spirit, and does very well conveying a sense of adventure. The songs featured are fun and memorable. I also loved the crispness and wit of the dialogue managing to appeal to children and adults alike, and the story is exciting with lots of charm and heart. The characters appeal because of their larger-than-life personalities, true the names are on the generic side(Pirate Captain, Pirate with gout) but that was probably the attention. I did enjoy seeing the likes of Charles Darwin and Queen Victoria as well, and they especially Queen Victoria added a lot to the film. As for the vocal cast, the cast itself was one of the film’s main attractions and the voice work is first rate. Hugh Grant shows impeccable comic timing, and Salma Hayak voices Cutlass Liz with lots of sass. Jeremy Piven shows that he can do wonderfully with a character that is strongly-written and provides a good contrast to Grant’s Pirate Captain. Brendan Gleeson and Brian Blessed give rousing turns, David Tennant’s Charles Darwin charms and Imelda Staunton voices Queen Victoria as if she were born to do it.

Every once in a while the conversation will turn to “favorite movies.” I’ll mention Titanic, and at least a couple people will snicker. I pay them no mind because I know that five years ago, these same people were moved to tears by that very movie. And they’re too embarrassed now to admit it. I just rewatched Titanic for the first time in a long time. Expecting to simply enjoy the story again, I was surprised to find that the movie has lost none of its power over these five years. I cried again…. in all the same places. It brought me back to 1997 when I can remember how a movie that no one thought would break even became the most popular movie of all time. A movie that burst into the public consciousness like no other movie I can recall (yes, even more than Star Wars). And today, many people won’t even admit they enjoyed it. Folks, let’s get something straight — you don’t look cool when you badmouth this film. You look like an out of touch cynic. No movie is perfect and this one has a few faults. Some of the dialogue falls flat, and some of the plot surrounding the two lovers comes together a little too neatly. However, none of this is so distracting that it ruins the film. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are wonderful. Leo is one of the fine actors of his generation. Wait ’til you see him in Gangs of New York before you call him nothing more than a pretty boy. Kate Winslet was so strong in this film. The movie really was hers, and she held it together beautifully. James Cameron managed what many believed was impossible by recreating a completely believable Titanic. The sinking scenes were horrific, just as they were that night. How anyone can say the effects were bad is beyond me. I was utterly transfixed. This film is one memorable scene after another. Titanic leaving port in Southampton. Rose and Jack at the bow, “flying”. “Iceberg, right ahead!” The screws hanging unbelievably out of the ocean. The screams of the doomed after she went down. And that ending that brought even the burliest man in the theater to tears. The music, which has also been a victim of the film’s success, was a key ingredient. James Horner’s score was simply perfect. And the love theme was beautiful and tragic. Too bad Celine Dion’s pop song version had to destroy this great bit of music for so many. I confess, I am a Titanic buff. As such, I relished the opportunity to see the ship as we never got to see it — in all its beauty. Perhaps watching it sink affected me more than some because I’ve had such an interest in the ship all my life. However, I doubt many of those I saw crying were Titanic buffs. I applaud Cameron for bringing this story to the masses in a way that never demeaned the tragedy. The film was made with such humanity. Another reviewer said it better than I ever could: Open up your hearts to Titanic, and you will not be disappointed.

Willem Dafoe plays a mysterious loner hired to find the Tasmanian Tiger, which is considered extinct. The film co-stars two wonderful kids and the Tasmanian back-country, extraordinarily beautiful. What’s great about this movie is that in addition to telling an excellent story, it is beautifully filmed and, as a bonus, sent my wife and me to the Internet to look up Tasmania and the Tasmanian Tiger, which indeed is considered the most recently extinct animal. So we learned something too! As for the story, sure you can carp and say it’s too far-fetched, or too sentimental, or has holes in it (what story doesn’t). But it hangs together quite well and is not only multi-faceted but refreshingly unpredictable. And the wonderful Silence. Few actors can work in silence as well as Willem Dafoe. This may be his strongest-ever performance, his expressive face being his best feature. Many scenes are told in silence, or rather with only the sounds of the back-country and the excellent movie score. Dafoe triumphs in a movie that is, after all, ultimately about his well-drawn character. After all, it is called “The Hunter.”
