I actually loved the trailers and couldn’t wait to see this movie. Though in the past many trailers have been top notch but the movie just didn’t match up. Well in the case of the Croods, the trailers were nice but the movie was just a great, brilliant and amazing feat. The animation quality is brilliant, excellent animation that is enchanting and magical. The story very moving and heartfelt and had some really emotional and moving scenes handled very intelligently. The characters are endearing and you just can’t help but love them all, absolutely lovable. This action packed adventure is just an epic and thrilling ride GUARANTEED to keep you (child and adult) at the edge of your seat. Breathtaking visuals and heart racing scenes. An adventure of a lifetime is all i can say. Spectacular and fun. The entire family dynamic of The Croods is so amazingly portrayed and extremely ratable. With educational snippets guaranteed to get kids interested in topics such as plate tectonics and continental shift and drift etc. And many heartwarming and yet smartly handled lessons to be learned along the way. What a great film. Now for the humor. It is brilliant, smart humor that will have you in stitches. I have not laughed that hard in a long long time. I laughed until i cried and no i am not exaggerating. The entire theater was in stitches booming with laughter. It was just great fun. The child in the row ahead of me commented to his mother how he was loving this amazing movie to which his mother replied that she too thought it was awesome! The college kids who came as a group were in hysterics and seemed to enjoy this movie just as much. Even a grandmother who sat next to me couldn’t control herself and was enjoying this great family film with the rest of us. To put it plainly, the whole family will love it. It is the perfect family movie: smart, hilarious, sweet and emotional. And whats great is you will enjoy it even if you go on your own. So many individuals came to watch it on their own and they enjoyed it as much as the families did. Usually many comedy movies will have a chuckle here and there but this one had myself and the rest of the audience in fits of uncontrollable laughter from start till finish. One of those films where time just flies by and since you are thoroughly enjoying yourself, you just don’t notice the time pass. GREAT WORK DREAMWORKS! They really are stepping it up as of late. ROTG was fantastic and now this film is carrying on the trend of brilliant animated films. Looking forward Dreamworks Studios next endeavor and if this film is anything to go by, i see many more great films ahead from this studio.

A really interesting concept for a movie, with an incredible ensemble of talent to provide the voices; however, this film pales in comparison to other animated films currently in the theaters. I enjoyed this film; however, ‘Wreck It, Ralph’ was far more superior on almost every scale imaginable (plot, humor, content, graphics, nostalgia, etc). The “Guardians” are a group of immortals comprised of North (Santa Claus) voiced by Alec Baldwin, Bunny (The Easter Bunny) voiced by Hugh Jackman, Tooth (The Tooth Fairy) voiced by Isla Fisher, and Sandy (The Sandman) who gestures rather than speaks. Their whole existence on the planet is the protection the children of the planet; however, they can only exist if the children of the world still believe in them. Once the children no longer believe that a Guardian is real, their facade, magical powers and abilities will diminish, and start to fade away. The villain of this film is Pitch Black (voiced by Jude Law). He is the keeper of nightmares. He once reigned supreme during the Dark Ages; however, the ‘Guardians’ have been able to keep him under control for several centuries. Pitch has been able to strengthen his powers by manipulating the dream powers of Sandy, The Sandman. His goal is to methodically zap the powers of each ‘Guardian’ one-by-one, by having the children of the world start to doubt their existence; while simultaneously getting his presence into their mindset thus making him a stronger force to be reckon with. Once Pitch Black destroys the ‘Guardian’ alliance, the children of the world will be at his mercy. Perhaps the two (2) best things that this film has going it are Santa (North) and the Easter Bunny (Bunny). Both are great characters. The scenes showing North, his Yeti staff (which actually do all the work at the North Pole), and his incompetent elves (which I just adored); is simply genius. The rivalry between North and Bunny is great comedic levity, and adds much candor to the storyline and plot. Making Bunny a 6-foot tall, boomerang-throwing Australian accented entity was an interesting choice. The decision of Dreamworks to release this first film during the Holiday Season is questionable at best, because this film is in no way a holiday movie. The timeframe for this film is three (3) days prior to Easter… I can only assume that Dreamworks felt that having a movie poster featuring Santa on it would lure family audiences into the theater seats. So be warned, this film really has nothing to do with Christmas!!!! Again, this is not a bad film; however, it’s not a great film either. I would wait, and save seeing this film for home viewing. I’d much rather pay to see ‘Wreck It, Ralph’ a second time than suggest that you spend your hard earned money to pay and see ‘Rise of the Guardians’ in theaters. Just my personal opinion.

Have you ever felt like you were stuck in a role you never wanted to play? Constantly subjected to scorn and ridicule simply for performing the only task available to you? What if you could change that? Fix-it Felix Jr. has been a popular game in Litvak’s for years. The hero and titular character, Felix (voiced by Jack McBrayer) has a magic hammer that can repair any damage done by the game’s villain, Ralph. When the game is over, Felix is given a medal while Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) is tossed off the roof by the tenants of the building he failed to destroy. When the arcade closes and the game is turned off, Ralph returns to his home atop a garbage heap in the nearby dump. For recreation, he visits Tapper’s, a vintage game that assigns the player the role of a bartender. Also, upon our introduction to the story, Ralph makes his first visit to a support group for video game villains. Among the villains in attendance at Bad-Anon, we see M. Bison and Zangief from Street Fighter (voiced by Gerald C. Rivers and director Rich Moore respectively), a ghost from Pac-Man (voiced by Kevin Deters), and a zombie (Raymond Persi). During that meeting, he announces he no longer wants to be a bad guy. With the 30th anniversary of Fix-it Felix Jr., the tenants throw a party and “forget” to invite Ralph. Ralph crashes the party, in every sense of the word, and leaves soon after. Before he’s left, he vows to return with a medal, something denied him by Felix and the tenants of the building he destroys. He seizes the opportunity to travel to a new game, a first-person shooter game called Hero’s Duty, when a character from that game passes out in the bathroom. While at the center of Hero’s Duty, Ralph is overwhelmed by the violence in modern games and refuses to heed the orders of his superior, Sergeant Calhoun (voiced by Jane Lynch). Once the arcade closes and the game ends, Ralph decides to forgo the usual hurdles of Hero’s Duty and steal the medal typically awarded to the winner. After stealing the medal and, unwittingly, bringing a menacing enemy insect known as a Cy-bug with him, Ralph heads to the kart-racing game Sugar Rush. It’s there that he encounters the perpetually glitchy and terminally annoying Vanellope von Schweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman). Despite the initial friction, Ralph and Vanellope (Silverman) bond over their shared status as outcasts. There is, of course, more to the story including Felix’s pursuit of Ralph into the various other games and his budding romance with the no-nonsense Sergeant Calhoun, the true origin of Silverman’s character, and an eventual revolt in the world of Sugar Rush. All of it, and I do mean all of it, had me riveted. I will say that, as a fan of old-style video games, I would’ve preferred seeing the character of Ralph travel to more than just the two different games besides his. Regardless of my criticisms, Wreck-It Ralph is hilariously entertaining and fun for viewers of all ages. Check it out.

There was a time when Tim Burton was systematically churning out great, original, quirky movies that endeared him to the general public and earned him a large amount of die-hard followers who hung on to every last idiosyncratic trademark. These followers have had a particularly hard time these last few years, ever since Tim Burton started to spoil. True, he was still using all of the unique little devices that made us love him, but his heart was not in the movies, and they all turned out commercialized and soulless, the cool “Tim Burton-ambiance” mocking us by hinting at how good he used to be. I’m glad to say now that has all changed. “Frankenweenie” starts by showing the audience the ordinary life of an extraordinary kid called Victor, a young boy with no friends, but a burning passion for his specialist subjects (horror movies, film making and science), a childhood that will surely resonate with both Tim Burton and the majority of his fans. Then, to the surprise of no-one who has seen the poster for the movie or heard the title, his beloved dog dies, and Victor conducts an experiment to bring him back to life, á la Frankenstein. From that moment, everything gets deliciously out of hand and grows into a classic “there is an imminent problem at hand that we need someone to deal with before this all goes down the toilet”-movie that we all love. While the movie does not really develop its characters deeply and sometimes drops certain plot lines we would have liked to see more of, it makes up for it tenfold with the thing that Tim Burton has more of than anybody else: imagination. So many moments in this movie are truly original, clever and, best of all, funny. “Frankenweenie” is a giant tribute to old horror flicks, set against a sweet story of a kid and his dog. It will find its way into the great list of “Must see childhood movies” and will remain there for the ages, much like his previous hits “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Edward Scissorhands”. I’m giving it a very high rating, not just because it is a great movie, but because it is proof of that Tim Burton still has great things inside of him, that might well be brought back to life one dark and stormy night.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA wasn’t as clever (nor as fun) as I imagined. I even went for it during my birthday; since 2009 I’ve been celebrating my birthday by going to the cinema and this year I had three potential choices: THE WATCH, DREDD 3D and this one. It was a question of time that I ended watching “Transylvania” over THE WATCH, which was the one I truly wanted to enjoy. Anyway, I have to mention that one of the trailers I got to watch was the one of the upcoming Disney film WRECK-IT RALPH; it seems that “Ralph” will not miss the chance to deliver really clever material out of a mash-up of classic characters (video games characters, like Nintendo’s Bowser, in that case). “Transylvania”, on the contrary, missed its chance with the classic “Universal Monsters” (Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Mummy, the Invisible Man) and some others monsters. It’s clear that the whole horror atmosphere was the reason I wanted to check this one out. Here’s a piece of advice for anyone who wants to watch it as well as a horror fan, looking for some nice and fun references or something like that: watch this year’s PARANORMAN instead, or something like MONSTER HOUSE (Gil Kenan, 2006), as there’s pretty much nothing worthy of admiration here. Well, there’s something nice in the last section of the film and I will explain it to make a point. The core of the storyline is that Dracula (voice of Adam Sandler – definitely his best or better said, his only honorable work in the last years) built a place for any monster that wanted some peace; a hotel nowhere nears a human civilization. So we have monsters that basically don’t know humans; the nice thing comes when they finally go out and get to see some horror fans (in a way this thing is like that with Johnny Deep, as an 18th-century vampire, waking up in the seventies, from DARK SHADOWS); eventually, there’s a terrific joke on the TWILIGHT thing: we have Dracula (or “Drac”, as he is referred during the whole movie) totally disappointed after getting to see how humans represent the monsters by watching some TWILIGHT! Good stuff, right? However, the point I want to make is that there’s always a problem when a movie that judges how awful the horror genre has been treated lately is itself making, for instance, a Kanye West sort-of rapper out of Dracula. I mean, I get it, I get that right from the first scene of the movie we are going to watch a different version of Dracula, as, after all, this is a kid’s flick (in fact, we have Dracula as a single father!). However, the whole thing is sort- of annoying, even if you accept it as something completely unrelated to the classic monsters. It’s one of those, like the last MADAGASCAR, with lots of things going on. There’s a lot of noise but nothing that truly gets you or that makes you laugh hard (there are, nevertheless, some funny bits involving the Invisible Man). That’s on one hand, and on the other we have a formulaic story about an over-protective father and love. In conclusion, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA is average material that totally wastes its main attraction.

With 2009’s “Coraline” and now “ParaNorman,” the artists at LAIKA, Inc. have asserted themselves as some of the best minds in contemporary animation. While not as cerebral as Pixar’s best works, LAIKA’s two features achieve the same great feat that the productions of that preeminent studio are known for: transcending the “family film” mold by actively appealing to every member of the family, rather than just the children. Like “Coraline,” “ParaNorman” is tonally darker than the average animated feature–complete with real-world bullying and foreboding supernatural creatures like ghosts, zombies, and a witch–but its ample comedic relief and spirited action sequences ensure that the movie never descends to the macabre depths of its Henry Selick-helmed predecessor. The eponymous protagonist (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), has a peculiar gift: he can interact with ghosts. This behavior relegates Norman to outcast status at school, where he is picked on by meanie Alvin (Christopher Mintz Plasse), and troubles his parents (Jeff Garlin and Leslie Mann), though they dismiss his living room conversations with his deceased grandma (Elaine Stritch) as a phase rather than a reason for psychiatric evaluation. Norman’s paranormal sensitivity comes in handy when a centuries-old curse cast upon his town by a witch (Jodelle Ferland) comes to fruition, causing a pack of zombies to roam the streets. Given his prior experience with the dead and intimate knowledge of the curse, thanks to interactions with a local eccentric (John Goodman) who had been warding it off for years, Norman is the only one who can save his fellow citizens from havoc. LAIKA once again uses stop-motion animation to gorgeous effect, with bold colors and immaculate character design (Norman’s only friend, the pudgy Neil, is a real treasure). The studio’s visuals have become even more cinematic since “Coraline,” thanks to directors Chris Butler and Sam Fell’s adoption of the ‘Scope aspect ratio to allow for more complex compositions and efforts to minimize the drawbacks of stop-motion (particularly strobing). Even the 3-D effects are bright and pleasant, if unnecessary. “ParaNorman” is every bit as visually accomplished as the more technically complex computer animated films from Pixar and DreamWorks. But for as beautiful as “ParaNorman” is on the surface, it wouldn’t be the film that it is without its lovable cast of characters. Inhabiting a relatively straightforward (albeit well-told) story, they make the proceedings feel fresh every step of the way. Norman is a spunky and sympathetic protagonist, but the supporting characters are even more appealing. Norman’s Barbie-doll of an older sister and Neil’s jock of an older-brother, voiced by Anna Kendrick and Casey Affleck, respectively, are particularly funny — stereotypes at first glance, but revealing of many uniquenesses as they become involved in the action plot. An hysterically delivered last-minute revelation about Affleck’s character is truly ballsy and will undoubtedly alienate socially conservative parents. Apart from the richly spun personalities, there are comedic references aplenty for adult viewers to chew on while their younger counterparts sit back and enjoy the simple mechanizations of the story. Horror fans will be in heaven, as there are numerous sight gags that allude to late-‘70s and early-‘80s genre staples like “Halloween,” “Friday the 13th,” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” There are also more general quips that tackle subjects like Irritable Bowel Syndrome and adult video stores, which will hopefully fly right over kids’ heads. “ParaNorman” may prove too frightening for children under age 8 or 9–after all, it’s essentially a zombie movie, albeit a toned-down one–but it is otherwise a perfect selection for audiences of any age. The film is never groundbreaking, but it achieves what it sets out to do with sharp storytelling and eye-popping visuals. My only complaint is that it should have been released in October, when it would have functioned as a perfect warm-up for Halloween. Alas, viewers will just have to get in a spooky mood two months early, because “ParaNorman” is not to be missed.

First of all, if you are like me, and were disappointed with this movie, you may be surprised at the ratings on IMDb. For example- The gem of British comedy, Flushed Away, was ranked worse than this. Both Madagascar movies, were ranked worse than this. The third Ice Age installment, was ranked one point off this. Really? Folks, I’m not going to sugar coat this thing. It was a awful end to a great saga. With the Ice Age movies, I notice each one of them seems to slip deeper and deeper into unrealistic expectations, making it almost impossible for children to believe what is on the screen, as I was doing with the children I had taken with me. First Ice Age – Animals return child to parent. Quite simple, sweet. Second- World is melting, somehow a giant boat will save them all. Pretty weird, but watchable. Third- Dinosaurs under the ice. Right, that’s going off the mark. But the character Buck saved the movie with brilliant British comedy and writing. And then there’s this trainwreck. Sid, Manny and Diego, and a Granny of Sids, find themselves battling a ship full of pirates who enjoy singing and bossing little furry creatures around. My god. I don’t even know where to start with this thing. First off, Manny has had the ol ‘Disney parent syndrome’ slapped on him, and he is dangerously worried about his teenager daughter, Peaches, constantly. We’ve seen it done in every single daddy-daughter movie. They even had the gall to send Crash and Eddie to watch her frequently. It’s like they had just watched Lion King 2, swapped some characters around, then claimed it original. Peaches problem is just about the most predictable teenage story in the book. > Girl finds cool group. > Ditches lame friends, becomes popular > Regrets it later. Yeah, it’s pretty lame. But thats just the start of this…analysis. Right, so they get separated as continents are drifting at a alarming rate, complete with a pop culture reference about each one which was clearly existent back in the BC. Sid gets dumped with this god awful Granny relative, who is stealing screen time as Sid’s side comic relief. She is not funny. Sid is funny. Do not add TWO funny characters in a troupe, it never works. They come across this-ugh, pirate ship, run by a monkey, an elephant seal, a kangaroo, and a predictably female saber tooth tiger. It is awful from there. This installment even has a song, too. The song itself actually wasn’t so bad, but it is SO not in an Ice Age nature to do so, as no other movies did it, that people just kinda were confused as to whether it was a musical. There’s a lovely cheesy song at the end too, don’t worry. It’ll suck any remaining dignity out of the movie. I’m not even sure if Ice Age 2 or this one is worse. Probably this one, because everything is just so unrealistic. Kids in the audience were even realizing it. It’s just a load of action, clichés, corny family messages, and very very predictable rubbish. Keep your money.

Everything about Brave is different from the Pixar norm, save the unequaled attention to detail and quality. The Disney-Pixar animated feature focuses on Princess Merida as she searches for a way to change her fate. In a journey of magic, adventure and family, the fiery Scot is launched into the ranks of the elite Disney princesses. As odd and understandably foreign as the accents felt watching the early previews for the movie, the voice acting was executed following, creating very real characters that fit their animated molds perfectly. By the end of the movie, what once sounded foreign blended into the scenery and visuals to create a completely immersing environment. In fact, amid the magic spells and tall tales of times gone by, it’s the historical, Scottish feeling that made Marida’s journey and transformation (and that of her mother) that much more tangible and familiar. Underneath the folk-tale storyline lies the same life lessons that ring true for young and old. Though the movie heavily focuses on a mother- daughter relationship, it’s not just for girls anymore than Mulan was. Merida is a true Disney princess, with gumption, heart and an uncanny connection with nature, but the story could have been told from a male perspective and rung just as true, making it easy to empathize with Pixar’s first female lead. As has been the case with almost every other one of their movies, the company has reinvented the standard for animated visuals. The environments are based on real Scottish landmarks, adding real depth to the story, and the colors are as bright as they are grounded, creating a wonderfully real world. Such visuals lend credence to the upcoming 3D re-release of Finding Nemo, though not much, but also show just how far the studio has come. All of the elements put together, Brave is a different sort of movie than many were expecting. More focused on a single pair and their quest together, not to mention darker by far, the story of Merida was a leap of faith for the once small studio. Many will have their doubts, left wanting another heart wrenching love story from Up or creative take on a beat to death genre like The Incredibles. That was never the purpose. Just as with every one of their award-winning films (Cars 2 notwithstanding), a new movie means a new chapter, new story and new style of film. Taken for what it is, Brave is a remarkable step into a whole new style of movie, proving the creative teams at Pixar will continue to write their own fate.

Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman and the rest of their gang return in the third installment of the “Madagascar” series, and yes they are still trying to get back home to New York City. This film has them traveling with a group of circus animals all throughout Europe on the run from a French animal hunter who has killed every animal and has mounted their head on her wall, except for a lion. This movie stars the voice talents of Ben Stiller (Tower Heist, Tropic Thunder), Chris Rock (Grown ups, The Longest Yard), David Schwimmer (Friends, John Carter), Jada Pinkett Smith (Ali, Collateral), Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat, Bruno), Cedric the Entertainer (Larry Crowne, Ice Age), and Bryan Cranston (Drive, Breaking Bad). Everyone did a great job with their characters and it was a blast to hear all these familiar voices in a film together again. I have been a fan of the previous “Madagascar” films, and that still is the case, but I really didn’t have any hype for this movie because from the trailers, it didn’t really look that good. I am glad to say that it is the complete opposite of that. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed film from start to finish and thought that for certain audiences, the film is perfect. If you are a younger person (12 and under) the movie will entertain and make you laugh the entire time. Now for the other demographic (13 and up), the film is still a really fun experience having jokes that adults would get, as well as some really funny situations. The “Madagascar” series has been known to be over the top, but “Madagascar 3″ takes the cake for being the most over the top one yet. You can not simply go into this movie expecting a toned down film featuring animals that can talk and doing anything that humans can. You have to go into this film with an open mind and just enjoy the ride. I found myself laughing constantly throughout the film and I couldn’t help but have a smile on my face the entire time. This movie made me feel like I was a kid again and that is one of the best feelings there is. This is easily the best movie in the series in my opinion. What really blew me away though was something that wasn’t crucial to the movie, and that was the 3D. This is probably some of the best 3D I have seen in a film. I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to pop out next. If you see this film, please do yourself a favor and see the 3D version of it, you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend this film to all ages. Whether you are a kid or an adult, you will find enjoyment in this film.

Having loved Aardman’s other work, especially Wallace and Gromit, Creature Comforts, Chicken Run and Shaun the Sheep, I was much looking forward to The Pirates! And I found myself loving it. Apart from sagging slightly in the pace in the middle with a couple of scenes that could’ve done with more punch perhaps, it has all the attributes that made me love Aardman in the first place. For instance, The Pirates! is a marvellous looking film, you could really tell that a lot of creativity and effort went into it. The colours and backgrounds are plentiful and rich with always something interesting to look at, and the character designs are appealing with the title character reminding of a youthful Wallace with hair and a beard. The 3D is one of the rare instances where it enhances the visuals and action rather than detract from it. Theodore Shapiro’s music is enough to rouse the spirit, and does very well conveying a sense of adventure. The songs featured are fun and memorable. I also loved the crispness and wit of the dialogue managing to appeal to children and adults alike, and the story is exciting with lots of charm and heart. The characters appeal because of their larger-than-life personalities, true the names are on the generic side(Pirate Captain, Pirate with gout) but that was probably the attention. I did enjoy seeing the likes of Charles Darwin and Queen Victoria as well, and they especially Queen Victoria added a lot to the film. As for the vocal cast, the cast itself was one of the film’s main attractions and the voice work is first rate. Hugh Grant shows impeccable comic timing, and Salma Hayak voices Cutlass Liz with lots of sass. Jeremy Piven shows that he can do wonderfully with a character that is strongly-written and provides a good contrast to Grant’s Pirate Captain. Brendan Gleeson and Brian Blessed give rousing turns, David Tennant’s Charles Darwin charms and Imelda Staunton voices Queen Victoria as if she were born to do it.

Description

Dr. Seuss’s characters are so iconic and his stories’ messages are so clear and concise that they practically beg for cinematic treatment, even as their relative two-dimensionality and self-contained nature frustrate expansion into feature-length form. Consequently, even with a solid effort like Horton Hears a Who!, Seuss adaptations have a tendency to feel unnecessary, puffing up what was perfectly formed to begin with. Nonetheless, as far as such efforts go, The Lorax is a modest gem, failing to significantly enhance its source material’s ideas but still delivering a zany, rollicking, multi-character version of Seuss’s environmental cautionary tale, which director Chris Renaud infuses with a brand of bonkers humor in line with that of his prior work, Despicable Me. That’s most evident in his film’s conception of Seuss’s humming-fish and brown barbaloots (fuzzy bears) as sprightly, mischievous minion-like comedic relief creatures. Yet it more fundamentally extends to rocket-fueled narrative and visual pacing, in which the camera zooms, sways, and whisks about with manic energy, as if so taken with the bountiful Seussian sights of squiggly lined houses, pinwheel-shaped Truffula trees, and swelling and surging hills and valleys that it can’t wait to move on to gaze at the next kaleidoscopic wonder.

Beauty and the Beast is without a doubt one of Disney’s finest classics. The first animated film to ever be nominated for best picture and after you see it, you could understand and agree with it’s nomination. Beauty and the Beast is going to be one of those films that will always be remembered, I know that it’s a movie that I will show my children one day. It has unbelievably terrific animation, a beautiful story, lovable characters, and is just over all a perfect movie. I really love this film so much, I don’t think anyone couldn’t fall in love with it. Bell is just a simple girl in her town in France, she reads books constantly and her father is an inventor. They are sort of the outcasts of their town due to their “oddness”. But Bell is being pursued by the town hunk, Gueston, simply because she’s the one girl he cannot have. One day when her father’s inventions are about to be displayed at the fair, he gets lost in the woods and stumbles across a castle and is held prisoner. Bell goes after him and comes to the castle; it turns out that her father is being held by a beast who is cursed with this hideousness unless he finds a true love before a rose he has welts. Bell trades places with her father; the house also has living objects, a candle holder, a clock, a tea pot, all who are also cursed until the curse is broken. They look at Bell as the perfect opportunity for the beast to find a true love, but he must learn to be a gentleman, but Bell brings out the best in him and it turns out that this might be a happy ending after all. This was actually the first movie that I ever cried in, the ending was just so beautiful and heart felt, you’ll have to see what I mean. The songs are just so lovely and perfect for the scenes that they are performed for. Beauty and the Beast, the song, was just one of the most touching songs ever. This films is a major recommendation for me, it’s one of my favorite Disney films of all time, it’s a timeless classic that is just perfect and reached a new level of great animation.

You don’t change the formula, not when it is one that has worked to amass a cool US$400mil worldwide per picture. So despite boasting a new director in the form of ‘Sky High’ and ‘Shrek Forever After’s’ Mike Mitchell, this third live-action adaptation of the classic animated TV series is surprisingly alike to the earlier two instalments. That’s going to be good news for those who loved both the first ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ as well as the ‘Squeakquel’- but for those hoping that this third outing will finally have the charm that eluded the first two, we’d like to warn you to be disappointed. Penned once again by the duo of Johnathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, the ‘Chipwrecked’ adventure uses yet another paper-thin plot to string together the hi-jinks of the singing and dancing Chipmunk trio as well as their female Chipette equivalents. Here, Alvin’s mischief while vacationing on a cruise with their kind beleaguered owner Dave (Jason Lee) leaves the Chipmunks and the Chipettes stranded on a desert island with a volcano that’s about to blow its top. Oh and did we mention Alvin’s hand-gliding stunt also lands both Dave and their arch-nemesis from before, Ivan (David Cross), overboard and washed up on the same, albeit different corner of the, island? It’s no secret how- let alone if- the Chipmunks and Chipettes manage to make it off the island alive, and not even the addition of a new character, Zoe (Jenny Slate), whom Aibel and Berger unabashedly models after Tom Hanks’ FedEx employee in Castaway, adds much life to what is really an awfully predictable plot. Admittedly, none of the Chipmunk movies have had much story, and to expect better from ‘Chipwrecked’ would therefore be a tall order. Like the previous instalments therefore, this one is simply content to coast on the ‘aw-shucks’ cute charms of the chipmunks. Indeed, each Chipmunk seems to be calculated to appeal to a certain demographic- whether the playful leader Alvin, the responsible brainiac Simon, or the adorably naïve Theodore, as well as the corresponding Chipettes Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor. Their incessant high-pitched bantering and bickering that unfolds at a lightning pace is still clearly the highlight of the show, not forgetting of course their regular song and dance numbers set to some of the contemporary chart- topping pop tunes like Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’, Willow Smith’s ‘Whip My Hair’ and Destiny Child’s ‘Survivor’. Like we said, it’s worked before- like a charm, if we may add- with family audiences, so expect more of the same this time round. A midway twist where Simon starts assuming an alter-ego in the form of Frenchman Simone after getting bitten by a poisonous spider tries to inject some novelty into the Chipmunks’ routine, but the initial appeal of watching the usually rational Simon turn debonair and somewhat impetuous quickly wears out its welcome. Faring slightly better is the budding attraction between Simon and Jeanette, manufactured nonetheless to elicit maximum geek appeal. Speaking of geek, those who loved ‘My Name is Earl’ may be dismayed to find that Jason Lee plays again the lead human character in the movie- and while the talented Jason looks like he could easily sleepwalk through the role, he does succeed in drawing out more than a few laughs in between his repartee with David Cross. Mitchell however displays little of the flair he exhibited in the superhero surprise ‘Sky High’ and his work here is as nondescript as his earlier in ‘Shrek Forever After’. Of course, the fault isn’t entirely Mitchell’s- after all, the template for the ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ live-action films have been pretty much fixed in stone after the resounding success of the first two movies. This three-quel is made only for those who have enjoyed both its predecessors, since ultimately it rehashes the same singing and dancing Chipmunk formula. Nevertheless, it’s fast becoming a foolish consistency, and the likely fourth entry better not just be simply another Chip off the old block.

Aardman movies are great, and that first drew me to what I had presumed was a children’s film. A huge surprise, though, that this was a wonderfully “deep” and richly textured movie for adults. In fact, I would be surprised if a very young child would enjoy it much. Under 10s may find a bit of color and a few sight gags, but I don’t see them understanding the humor or the references. I am fondly nostalgic toward the old style Claymation animation Ardman was famous for- but it was not really missed here. The subtle wit and meaningful humanity came through just fine without it. For me, Christmas films about Christmas being spilt or other evils befalling the Santa myth are tiresome. But here all of that merely stood in for a genuine and engaging story that I actually related to. SPOILER ALERT— I may be opening myself to ridicule here, but I found the moment Grandsanta and his one old reindeer (he’s 136 years old, we are told, and the reindeer is equally ancient, living a life of creaky disability) purposely stopping the sleigh and awaiting certain death and destruction, just to insure the safety of his sons’ mission very touching. I know, sounds silly even to me now when I write it, but their sacrifice was depicted without fanfare, and without irony, and felt very real. It was as touching and moving an example of devoting oneself to something bigger, and sacrificing “all” for the sake of others as I have ever seen in any war movie. Sometimes the most affecting heroism is the simplest. Overall, I, an older adult, loved this movie very much. I plan to see it again, but without any grandchildren or nieces or nephews in tow. Not from selfishness, but because the little ones just wouldn’t get it, and it’s such a delight, and such an inspiration, that I would want to enjoy it fully myself. And I wouldn’t take a lady friend to this film, because I would be embarrassed to have her see me tear up.

Happy Feet Two has all the allegorical animation requirements in one amusing story about a little penguin’s growth to self-knowledge and courage, a family that fights for each other, and an entire village of empire penguins determined to survive in the face of a daunting environmental catastrophe. And don’t forget the dancing penguin routines, now a part of our cultural memory because who would have ever thought such a conceit would work? In the case of this film, the dancing is central to the survival of the colony, all of which is just metaphor for having imagination and invincible spirit to overcome the odds. The chances for Happy Feet Two being sappy and repetitive were significant, but its ebullient spirit, gifted voices like Robin Williams,’ and a creative plot make the penguins an unlikely symbol of intrepid imagination. Anyway, when I hid in a trench in New Zealand to see the little lovelies trundle home as they always do at the same time each day, I was hooked to see an animation renewing our cultural romance with penguins and the beast fable itself.

Puss In Boots – without the extra cast of Shrek – is very hard to relate to for half the movie. True, the kids loved it so much that they wanted to add the film to their wish list for a birthday or Christmas, but as to Family support and the average “Let’s get together as a Family and watch a Family Film”, there is more on offer to this genre than “Puss In Boots”. It may be a sad fact to many that the film is a singular, rather than a joint addition to the Shrek Series, but in all fairness, people will have the twitching feeling to expect Shrek or Donkey to appear anytime soon throughout the whole feature. It is – kind of – fresh in the way that it concludes a single adventure of the much loved-to-be-hated would-be assassin of Shrek, Puss In Boots, who will without a doubt enchant and entertain even the youngest of kin. More to the point is that if there are any children out there who have not seen any of the “Shrek’s” then this is the film for them.

Seriously, I know that sounds stupid as this is an animated movie, but why can’t we have a favorite movie that’s animated? If you ask me this is Disney’s best animated film of all time. Why do you ask? The animation is just beautiful, the story is powerful and moving, the characters are terrific, the villain is one of Disney’s most monstrous and the songs are out of this world incredible! Not only is it my favorite animated movie, this is one of my favorite soundtracks, with the strong power of Elton John The Lion King is absolutely beautiful and a pleasure to watch still to this day. I have to say also that this story is just so beautiful, it’s still one of the movies that will always bring a tear to my eye. When I was 17 years old, I begged my dad to take me to the re-release of The Lion King, him and I being the only adults besides the parents who took their children to see the movie, Simba’s father dies and I started balling! My dad looks around and said “Krissy, stop it!” and I just said “But it’s so saaaaad! Simba’s daddy!”, yes I’m a sap, I can’t help it, this is a powerful movie. In the Pride Lands, Rafiki, a wise old monkey, anoints Simba, the newborn cub of King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi, and presents him to a gathering of animals at Pride Rock. Taking advantage of the cub’s naive nature, Simba’s scheming uncle Scar, who is very angry because Simba’s birth means that he’s no longer next in line to the throne tells him about the elephant graveyard, a place where Mufasa has forbidden Simba to go. Simba asks his mother if he can go to the water-hole with his best friend, Nala, but they go to the graveyard instead. There, the cubs are met by Shenzi, Banzai and Ed, 3 hyenas who try to kill them, but they are rescued by Mufasa. But Scar doesn’t give up there, he lures Simba into a gorge for a “surprise from his father” while the hyenas create a wildebeest stampede. Alerted by Scar, Mufasa races to rescue Simba from the stampede. He saves his son but is left clinging to the edge of a steep cliff. Scar flings his brother into the stampede below. Simba sees his father fall and rushes down the cliff after him, only to find him dead. Scar convinces Simba that he was responsible for his father’s death and recommends that he runs away from the Pride Lands to avoid punishment. In a distant desert, Simba is found unconscious by Timon and Pumbaa, a duo who adopt and raise the cub under their worry-free philosophy, Hakuna Matata. When Simba has grown into an adult he is discovered by Nala, who tells him that Scar, through his irresponsibility, has turned the Pride Lands into a barren wasteland. She asks Simba to return and take his place as king but Simba refuses, still believing he caused his father’s death. Rafiki arrives and persuades Simba to return to the Pride Lands, and face Scar once and for all. I know that still that Beauty and the Beast is the only animated film to get a best picture nomination, but I don’t understand why The Lion King didn’t get the same treatment. I adore this film with such a passion, I will always defend it to the high end. I still watch this movie, ever since it’s theatrical release in 1994, I still sing, dance, and rehears the lines back and forth. How could you not at least with Hakuna Matata? Timon is my idol, he’s so care free, funny, and awesome during his drag hula scene… “Luau! If you’re hungry for a hunk of fat and juicy meat, eat my buddy Pumbaa here, ’cause he’s a tasty treat come on down and dine, on this tasty swine, all you gotta is get in line, are you achin’,? For some bacon? He’s a big pig. You can be a big pig, too. Oy!… Ahhhh!”, best scene ever in film history! OK, not in history, but one of my favorites, it always has me on the floor laughing till my stomach hurts. If you seriously haven’t seen this movie, see it! Who said that animated movies can’t be true art? The Lion King is a fantastic film and deserves all it’s praise and more.

Of all the bad movies based on cartoon series and comic strips, this has got to be the worst I’ve ever seen, the story is simple, the smurfs try to get away from gargamel when all of sudden they get time traveled to what you believe New York City of all places then they meet a man played by an embarrassed Neil Patrick Harris who has so good in Clara’s heart and TV shows like doogie houser m.d. and how I Met you mother and some other woman to protect the smurfs or else gargamel will turn them into gold for what reason. Now the smurfs I Remember from the cartoon was funny, amazing and had a good heart, this one is just absolutely nasty, truly dreadful and truly, absolutely unnecessary. The Acting is in this one is either horrible, waste of talent, (what the hell is katy perry doing in this piece of junk, truly terrible), the screenplay is simply a big mess, the CGI effects are horrible, the 3D is trash, the musical score is full of crap and everything else is truly stupid and here are some things that I Truly hated about this movie That one smurf would shake his ass, one smurf would fall into the toilet after he blew his bubble, that the smurfs would also look at a Sony electronic billboard and guess who’s the subsidiary of Sony? You guess it Columbia pictures, the makers of this film and the same ones who did two dreadfully bad films like Leonard Part 6 and Ishtar almost 25 years ago. the makers of this piece of truly dreadful trash oaught to be ashamed of themselves, shame on them and shame on this movie. Kids might like this, because they haven’t seen the original cartoons. Peyo, Don Messick, Hanna-Barbera and others are rolling in their graves as we speak. This is the worst movie of the year.

I have always been a fan of AA Milne’s charming and whimsical stories since an early age. The 1977 movie The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh epitomised the childhood innocence that made the stories so wonderful, as did the TV series The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. I also liked a vast majority of the various film and TV incarnations that were made between then and now. Ever since hearing of this movie I knew I wanted to see it. Part of me knew it would work, and for me when I saw it last night it did. My only complaint of Winnie the Pooh is the length, at barely an hour(exluding the credits and the short) the film is too short. Otherwise it is a wonderful movie that like the 1977 movie and TV series captures perfectly the childhood innocence that I know and love. Not only that, it is also a welcome return to the traditional animation style as seen with the original movie. Speaking of the animation it is great. I always felt The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh along with The Rescuers was the best looking of the 1970s Disney movies, it had an elegant and warm feeling to it. Winnie the Pooh maintains that elegant and warm feeling with colourful backgrounds, cutely drawn characters and ravishing colours. The songs and music heard in the movie aren’t quite classic status perhaps, but they are very memorable in the melodies and sweet in the lyrics. The dialogue is delightfully droll, with a lot for children and adults to enjoy. The story is structurally thin somewhat, but it is never dull thanks to the bright and breezy pace and the familiar yet absolutely delightful story lines including Pooh hunting for honey, Eeyore hunting for his tail and the search for the creature that Owl thinks has carried off Christopher Robin. The characters are engaging and wonderfully whimsical, Pooh is still endearing, Tigger is very funny and Piglet is cute. The voice acting is terrific really. These are not the original voice actors, and most of the voice actors(excepting Jim Cummings) in the likes of Tigger Movie, Pooh’s Heffalump Movie and Piglet’s Big Movie don’t return, but the new voice actors do make an effort to not sound too different. Jim Cummings still does a wonderful job as Pooh and Tigger, and John Cleese for me is the most thoughtful narrator of any Winnie the Pooh film since Sebastian Cabot. I wasn’t so sure though about Tom Kenny at first as Rabbit, but he being a very talented voice actor is also good. Overall, delightful, charming and a lovely nostalgic trip down memory lane, if only it wasn’t so short.

Description

16 years ago, Pixar Animation Studios released the first feature length computer animated film in history, Toy Story. What followed was an incredible run of success, an 11 film hot streak that yielded dozens of awards (including 11 Oscars), billions of dollars in box office receipts, and the admiration of audiences and critics everywhere. Year after year Pixar was a company you could rely on, and while not all the films were perfect, they all were at least of decent quality, and light years ahead of their competition from the likes of Dreamworks and Sony. So therefore it’s heart-breaking to say that Pixar’s hot streak has come to a crashing halt in 2011. Cars 2 is not just the weakest film in Pixar’s catalogue, it is the worst high-profile animated release for some time. If there is one Pixar film that divides opinion much more than any other, it is 2006’s Cars. While by no means a bad film, it just didn’t hit in the same way as films like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, or The Incredibles. It did middling numbers at the box office (by Pixar standards) and currently sits with a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the only film from the studio below 90%. For director John Lasseter (also head of Pixar), Cars is obviously a very personal film, a nostalgic story about the loss small-town American values in the face of increased modernity. If it’s not a complete success, credit must be given to Lasseter for at least trying to say something meaningful, and in typical Pixar fashion the film stands out in the increasingly crowded computer animation film market for at least attempting thematic depth, and it’s ability to reach audiences both young and old. Cars 2 on the other hand is completely devoid of depth and subtlety, and will more than likely annoy adults while at times being arguably inappropriate for children. Returning director Lasseter takes the worst character from the first film (in my opinion the biggest reason for Cars’ failure), and structures the whole story around his infuriating exploits. Imagine George Lucas, upon seeing the negative feedback following The Phantom Menace, making all of Episode 2 about Jar-Jar Binks. That’s the kind of thing we’re left with in Cars 2. Compounding the story problems is the troubling amount of guns and violence in the film. To make the argument that ‘it’s OK because they’re just cars’ is inexcusable. This is still supposed to be a children’s film, and while the espionage sub-plot does have potential, there are elements that seem shockingly unsuitable for young kids. This brings up a question: why would Pixar choose to revisit the only film they have produced which could conceivably be called a failure? Lasseter is on record as saying that the company would only explore sequels to their films if a good story could be developed, and the level of quality of the two Toy Story sequels seems to back up this sentiment, but it’s hard to believe that anyone would think the script of Cars 2 is worthy of that high standard. Interestingly, there is one other way that Cars stands apart from other Pixar films: the estimated $8 billion merchandising revenues. While all Pixar films have profited from merchandising, none have had the global appeal of Cars. It’s upsetting to think that Pixar, a company who seemed previously to place greater importance on the quality of its films than the bottom line, have gone for the easy cash grab, but there really seems to be no other reason for the existence of Cars 2. Everything about the films seems designed to increase the potential for selling merchandise, whether it’s the films global locations which pander to international audiences, or the increasingly ridiculous characters and set-pieces, tailor made to be toys and video games. It’s a cynical opinion, one which I had hoped I’d never feel towards a Pixar film, but it is undeniably true: Cars 2 is a film created not as an artistic endeavour, but to feed ancillary markets. Pixar’s golden run had to end sometime, and one bad film is a small price to pay for 11 good, with two or three being genuine masterpieces. What is most unfortunate is the catastrophic level of Cars 2’s failure, and Pixar will undoubtedly lose a lot of respect for making such a soulless film, unworthy of the studio’s name.

My biggest fear about sequels is it’s gonna end up pretty bad and ruin the first one. But I remember, Dreamworks already understand how to make a true good animated movie so I don’t have to worry. Now the sequel just got more awesome. Non-stop action and non-stop laughs. The heart is also there. “Kung Fu Panda 2″ is just as good as the first one. The trailer makes us dubious but this is Dreamworks. Anyways, “Kung Fu Panda 2″ is a great continuation of the series. The story still has a heart and some scenes can almost move you to tears. The movie has bigger and more Kung Fu action & yes, the action never stops. It’s all kick butt action. I like it how they improved the editing. Remember Megamind, It feels like you were flying in every flying sequences. They did the same thing in “Kung Fu Panda 2″. Fast Moving Action that it’s fun to see it even if it’s in 2D. I don’t really bash 3D though. The jokes are obviously everywhere. Even in serious scenes it suddenly has humor. The new comers from the cast did a great job. Gary Oldman is definitely good at being a villain in movies even if it’s animated. Michelle Yeoh made her character likable. Jean-Claude Van Damme is awesome even though his scenes were few. This movie still has the same style from the first movie. Magnificent flash animation in the intro, flashbacks, and the dream sequence. Nice music score. And a lot more. I just said this movie is as good as the first movie but if I had to pick which Kung Fu Panda movie is better then it would be the first one. It’s more heartwarming but Kung Fu Panda 2 is already good enough as a sequel because it’s bigger and too awesome. Unfortunately, It’s too awesome it moderates the depth a little bit but it’s entertaining at its best. To be honest, this could be the best movie of the summer so far.

I usually don’t like movies like RIO, mainly because they always end up being rehashes of previous movies; unless your talking Pixar, there’s very little to no new things in animated movies nowadays other than their exquisite looks. So when I saw a special advanced screening of RIO a few days ago, my expectations were low, enough for me to expect that the film will fail. But hey, what a surprise! It’s pretty good actually. So RIO ain’t a new masterpiece-it’s not at all much different with any Dreamworks or Blue Sky Animation effort that comes out every given year- but it was fun. The kids at the screening had a ball with it, but I can also hear older teenagers and adult audiences chuckling along with them. And I’m up there with them. The story isn’t something you haven’t heard before. Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) is a rare Blue Macaw raised in Minnesota by the bookish Linda (voiced by Leslie Mann). But being the last male of his species, Blu is requested to leave his Minnesota homeland and shipped to his real birthplace, in Rio de Janeiro, where a female of the same species is being kept in captivity. Blu doesn’t warm up easily to the impetuous Jewel (voiced by Anne Hathaway), and certainly a rare bird such as her being kept in captivity like that doesn’t help. It also doesn’t help that Jewel wants to escape and Blu, being a total “housebird” and all, can’t fly. But what it lacks in a fresh new idea it more than makes up for in lively execution. This movie is just amazing to look at, boasting one of the most gorgeous looks of any animated movie since some of the Pixar films and the occasionally bizarre but lavish-looking BEE MOVIE. It may even be more beautiful since this is exactly what it wants to be and not much else. Director Carlos Saldanha, who helmed two ICE AGE sequels, and the rest of the crew have done just that. The eye-popping visuals are the moneymaker and one of the few films to come out once and a while that is worth paying extra money to see on 3D. Once again, the 3D ain’t something groundbreaking, but it’s exactly what comes to mind when thinking of 3D; the visuals are pristine and dynamic, with flying scenes that are just breathtaking to watch. I could almost feel the wind as a glider glides past the Christ the Redeemer statue. Rio itself looks gorgeous, from the “Carnival” parades to the look of it during the nighttime scenes are just beautiful. If nothing else, it’s a virtual tour of a beautiful portrait painted by Saldanha and his animators. The voice cast ain’t bad either. Eisenberg is hilarious, and granted he’ll be doing these kind of work sometime soon. The real standout is Jemaine Clement (from FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS), who lends an irresistible bad guy charm as a cockatoo named Nigel. Hathaway, George Lopez, will.I.am and Jamie Foxx all fulfill their roles perfectly. RIO ain’t much new, but at least I enjoyed it for what it is. And I wouldn’t mind going back to it during its official release and wallow in the dazzling scenery again. Here’s a movie meant to be done (and seen) on 3D.

Description

Just as how Santa Claus stories work through their way through the Christmas period, Hop brings forward the Easter season some three weeks early with a kids film that combines the best of live action and animation in yet another talking animal story, which is something quite expected when you combine filmmakers who had worked on Alvin and the Chipmunks, and the producers of Despicable Me, who probably would have floated the idea that cute yellow things make for comedic villains since they’re going against type. Hop is a tale about sons being unable to live up to the ideals of their fathers, being told what is expected, being seen as soft and unable to exert any say in what they really want to do in life. When we first see EB (or short for Easter Bunny, voiced by Russell Brand), “plush toy” comes to mind for its incredibly cute design when the wide eyed bunny tours and allows the audience to see first hand what would be the equivalent of Santa’s operations that the Easter Bunny adopts, with multitudes of chocolate and candy making machines all outsourced not to elves, but to chicks to operate and churn them out, before making deliveries in one single day to all the kids. But as EB grows up, his propensity to take on the family business, or rather his calling in life, takes a hit and wanes because he aspires to dabble in music and play drums. Rather than take over from his father, he runs away to Hollywood to seek out his fortunes and thereby putting Easter potentially on hold, and bumps into Fred O’Hare (James Marsden), who is also kicked out of his family home because his father and family members find it a tad ridiculous that he mucks around home for the last one year doing nothing. So it’s a chance meeting of two similar sons set to prove themselves in a whole new world, and bring about the usual kids theme of friendship, perseverance, and plenty of juvenile comedy. Look out for David Hasselhoff playing himself, and the requisite cute bunnies collectively known as the Pink Berets who would probably steal the show. I have to admit though that some of the jokes do work, since it’s quite a wide spectrum from the usual toilet humour – EB poops delicious, multi-flavoured candy! – to a hilarious get up of the song I Love Candy with the duo continuing a ruse from earlier involving EB pretending to be a plush toy. This aspect of the film compensates for the lack of sophistication of the plot which for some weird reason has Fred not being satisfied with having validated that he’s not crazy with his young time witnessing of the Easter Bunny going about his one day routine, but desiring to instead become a bunny himself. That brought about what I thought was the most direct reference back to Despicable Me with the mindless bantering amongst the minions of the Easter Bunny’s factory, where second in command Carlos (Hank Azaria), in the absence of EB and his dad getting old, secretly coverts a plot to usurp the festivity and run the entire show himself. While the minions have different designs and varying degrees of intelligence, the chicks here adopt a uniform look, and as expected there’s always a smart alecky character to become cannon fodder for laughs. Besides priming itself for a respectable box office result when the Easter holiday rolls along, what this film would probably successfully do is to ramp up demand for rabbits and chicks amongst its targeted demographic, so parents, do spare a thought and taper those short term wants. Strictly for the kids. Do stay tuned until after the end credits for a scene to witness James Marsden’s Mandarin diction.

I heard from a number of people that this was excellent so I went to see it myself being a fan of animated movies and of film in general. And I absolutely loved it, other than being a little too long, which is such a minor complaint, it was a wonderful film with some surprisingly mature themes and does very well at trying something different. The animation for starters is outstanding. Not only do the characters move convincingly, but the colours look gorgeous and the backgrounds are imaginative and stunning. The soundtrack is another plus, the score is wonderful with a sense of fun, great use of instruments and nods to Ennio Morricone, without being too generic or over-the-top with some inspired musical flavour to it. The script is funny, smart and quirky as well- loved the Chinatown(Ned Beatty based his performance on that of John Huston’s) and Star Wars references, the characters are genuine and likable with heart and don’t fall into the trap of being too cliché(there are some but it works in the film’s favour and I loved the title character), the film goes at a great pace while remaining wholly satisfying at its end with an almost elegiac quality that is there with almost all the best westerns, the slapstick action bounces along nicely and the story is far from formulaic instead it is original and inventive. The voice acting is wonderful, both Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy- Rattlesnake Jake is awesome!- give knockout performances, while Isla Fisher, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Harry Dean Stanton and Abigail Breslin are equally terrific. In conclusion, a wonderful film that I wasn’t expecting to be this good this early on in the year. On a side note, for those complaining about suitability for children, I actually wouldn’t say this was a film for kids but more adult-oriented.

There’s animation and then there’s the animation based on motion capturing, which had seen the likes of films such as The Polar Express and the recent A Christmas Carol. For personal reasons I don’t quite dig this particular brand of art, straddling neither here nor there with its desire to be photo realistic, yet tinged with that hint of exaggerated elements that can only be made through the animated medium rather than live action. Then again if the artwork didn’t impress, the story did for a bit, with a surprisingly strong emotional core attached to it that many can identify with, especially if we had been mean to our own moms before. Mars needs moms, only because the Martians themselves are so bad at parenting and want to outsource this function, given a shift in ideology no thanks to a mean matriarch at the helm of their society, buried deep beneath the surface such that our Pathfinder is rather useless at detecting lifeforms. As Mars doesn’t have the necessary support environment, Moms get kidnapped from Earth, sent back to Mars, have their parenting DNA sucked out of their beings, implanted into Nannybots, before being obliterated in the process which involves the sun – yes Martians are environmental friendly and use renewable solar energy. The next mom on the Martian’s target is Milo’s mom (Joan Cusack), who impressed through their deep space surveillance camera with her ability to keep the naughty Milo (Seth Green) under control from taking out the trash to sending him to his room for not eating his veggies. Some hurtful exchange of words from son to mother, before he discovers the Martian’s ploy and made himself a stowaway on a spaceship back to Mars, where he turns from prisoner to rescuer with the help of a perpetually high Gribble (Dan Fogler), who teaches him a thing or two about survival on the red planet, wanting Max to become his BFF if not for the latter’s insistence to save his mom. So begins a quick adventure of about an hour with an audacious rescue mission to exploit its 3D-ness (watching this on 2D, there weren’t many sequences designed to do that, really), also with the help of convenient online, realtime translator sets the humans use to communicate with their Martian helper in Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), a somewhat non-conformist female Martian being influenced by the Flower Power propaganda the Martians have while researching Earth, graffiti painting the dull look of Mars with psychedelic colours. An unnecessary subplot occurs with the romantic dalliances between Martian and Man (really, eww), as well as some commentary about nature versus nurture with the male martians not being cared for by Moms and becoming more like Apes when left to their own devices when forced away from civilizations – there are two layers here, one being the females ruling the world, with the male species through the lack of nurturing going back to their primal selves. Still, what made this film bearable for the most parts is the emotional core of the story stemming from Milo’s regret in saying what could possibly be the meanest comment anyone can make toward their moms, which intensified his sense of urgency and regret as he races against the clock to save his her. You’ll be hard pressed not to tear up (oh the manipulation, Disney), though the insult to intelligence if you’re older than 5 years come from the final act, involving the lack of breathable air which I thought on one hand was brave of Disney to attempt something a little bit more shocking as is, but on the other pulled its punches with what was very implausible, that robbed it of its credibility. The only aspect which impressed was the sheer amount of work going on behind the motion capture, where you can see plenty of behind the scenes effort when the end credits were rolling, where the actors are strapped to multiple sensors of all kinds placed on their bodies while they act out their scenes made up of sparse looking, makeshift sets that double up for the real thing. Some nice touches also involved the first person perspective when the Martians speak, where we get to hear both Martian and English language tracks simultaneously as if we have put on the translating device ourselves.

The one thing that makes animations a success is magic, it is hard to explain but the film has to come alive with abundant heart, the characters must hold your heart strings and the story has to mesh and not really try to be magical or funny – it will succeed or it won’t when the magic happens. The Toy Stories have it, Shrek 1 had it, The Lion King, Finding Nemo, WallE, Happy Feet, The Incredibles, Up all have this magic. They are forces of animation to be reckoned with – and Gnomeo and Juliet does not have this magic. It has moments of forced, and sometimes clichéd, humor and is animation by numbers – it has all been done to death before and did not hold my attention for its near 90min length. I found it overly cutesy with limited entertainment to keep adults happy. I can see 10yr old girls loving it – 10yr old boys will love the boy stuff like races on lawnmowers but the rest is too pretty and pink for them. It did have moments and characters I really enjoyed and is voiced by some big names but overly I had no love for the characters. James McAvoy plays Gnomeo and he does it OK but there is nothing special about Gnomeo, same for Juliet – I got excited hearing Emily Blunt’s voice but m’eh it really didn’t do much for me either – I did like her Ninja moves and wish they had headed more along this line. Likewise Sir Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters, Hulk Hogan, Jason Statham, and even Ozzie Osbourne were all kind of flat and/ or underutilized. Most of Ozzie’s lines are in the trailer. The standouts that lifted the tone of the film were the Nanny – now a plastic frog that spurts water out of its mouth voiced by Ashely Jensen and the Friar – now a giant plastic pink flamingo voiced by Jim Cummings – these two lifted the flow of the film from mundane. I also found it very appropriate having Patrick Stewart (Capt Picard) voicing Shakespeare. The film is packed with numerous Shakespearean in-jokes. It takes place in contemporary Stratford-on-Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace; a shattered gnome is put together with a brand of glue known as The Taming of the Glue; there is a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern moving firm; Gnomeo is carried away by a van for Tempest Teapots (ie. a storm in a teacup pun) and so on. Various lines of classic Shakespearean dialog (not just from Romeo and Juliet) make sporadic appearances throughout. I was expecting this film to be quite cute for kids, like most animations, but a quiet payout of Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet for the adults – it actually opens doing just that and I got all excited hearing a little garden gnome saying “Before this story is this large introduction” He then reads about 4 lines of the opening of R&J and then says something along the lines of “Blah Blah Blah – let’s just get on with it”. But it kind of ends there. If you are a serious Shakespearean appreciator – avoid this film like the plaque – it changes most of the story and to the point it completely alters the story from a tragedy. But what do you expect – it is a kid’s cartoon. A statue of Shakespeare actually comes alive and debates with Gnomeo the merits of the story being a tragedy – I think the real Shakespeare would be turning in his grave . I think the biggest letdown for me with this film is that basically it’s a B Grade ripoff of Toy Story, although as opposed to toys that are really alive but do not allow humans to know, it is garden toys and animals. It is the exact same premise but wrapped in Romeo and Juliet story. For young kids this is fine as they can get a very VERY remote piece of Shakespearean education in some cute colors but for me none of the characters get even close to the likability of any of the characters from Toy Story plus R&J is one of my all time favorite stories and films (I love you Leo). There is some good music from Elton John spread throughout the film that lifts it a bit and while I did not watch it in 3D I could seem some scenes that could be good in 3D. Regardless of my thoughts – this film is made for young kids – and if it can keen your kids entertained for 90mins then its job is done. The film will be releasing on Feb 11th in the USA and Feb 17th in Australia. Worth 4/10.

Since the post-WWII wave of neo-realism, filmmakers worldwide have been exploring the beauty within the recesses of the urban landscape. The Italians had their ‘any space whatever’ amidst the post-war rubble; the French New Wave caressed Paris; Woody penned his love letter to Manhattan, Spike wrote his to Brooklyn; Jean-Pierre Jeunet did Montmartre; Wim Wenders did Lisbon; Wong Kar Wai did Hong Kong; Werner Herzog did Antarctica; John Hughes did Chicago; and now with ‘L’illsionniste’ Sylvain Chomet has Edinburgh – a city ripe for exploration and the director’s home for the past five years. The film is, indeed, bestowed with loving detail upon Scotland’s capitol. Sadly, the narrative providing the means for discovering its twists and turns imparts a final impression of cold disillusionment that starkly contrasts with the city that I’ve come to know in the last two years. Reworking a script by Jacques Tati, Chomet tells the story of an ageing slight-of-hand magician — near enough in both appearance and manner to be M. Hulot himself — who takes his outdated stage act from Paris to the UK. An invitation to perform in the Hebrides isles brings him to Scotland where his magic and kindness inspires a naïve young maiden to tag-along with him and the two find themselves in Edinburgh. The remainder of the film is a coming-of-age story for both characters — a slowly paced, melancholy journey of economic hardship and broken enchantments. The two take up residence in an aged hotel near Broughton Place, where a number of other outdated performers also reside: the clown upstairs is suicidal, the ventriloquist is penniless, the acrobat triplets paint billboards, and the magician himself finds work in a Jenners’ display window pulling women’s underwear out of thin air. The city, according to Chomet, has broken the magic and mystery of life, leaving the viewer with a sense of doomed mortality. One of the final images is that of the girl and a boyfriend, sheltered under a white coat in the pouring rain, struggling against a tide of black umbrellas, dissolving to a 3D animated travelling shot above the city. With this budding first-romance, what could have been a concluding note of hope instead seems destined for misery. Of course, glimpses of brilliance can be found: the animated medium befits the Tati character and Edinburgh itself, and Chomet’s restrained style teases out joy from the ordinary moments of everyday life. You even feel grateful for the opportunity to smile. Unfortunately what is missing in the film is the very thing I love most about the city: the contact and connections with its people. Edinburgh is a city of extraordinary people and culture. Just ask Robert Burns. It seems then, that though Chomet’s heartfelt intention was to show off the city he calls home, he failed to recognise its most remarkable asset. It’s the people that give life to Edinburgh and without this city of endless stone does indeed seem cold. Had Chomet focused more on the characters’ interactions with the residents as opposed to themselves, I think the film would have better communicated a stirring sense of hope and quiet pride that would have left the viewer with a greater desire for and appreciation of the city of Edinburgh.
