I saw “Peeples”, starring Craig Robinson-Eastbound & Down-t.v. , Hot Tub Time Machine, Kerry Washington-Scandal-t.v., the Fantastic Four movies, David Alan Grier-Bewitched-2005, In Living Color-t.v. and Diahann Carroll-White Collar-t.v. , Dynasty-t.v.. This is a black version of ‘Meet the Fockers’. It is produced, but not directed by Tyler Perry. Craig and Kerry are a couple that have been living together for a year but he has never met her parents-she always makes excuses for some reason. Every year, Kerry goes to visit her parents in the Hamptons for a reunion and a Moby Dick celebration and Craig is never invited; she tells him that he would not enjoy it. This year, Craig decides it’s time to meet the Peeples, their last name, and ask Kerry to marry him. David plays her father, a judge that doesn’t think anyone is good enough for his little girl and Diahann plays David’s mother. The humor is funny but not slap sticky, like some of Tyler’s movies can be. It’s rated “PG-13″ for sexual content-but no nudity, drug material and language and has a running time of 1 hour & 35 minutes. I enjoyed it and would buy it on DVD.

Based on a true story about three really dumb guys, and if it weren’t for all the blood and guts you’d think PAIN & GAIN was another THREE STOOGES reboot. It’s questionable if director Michael Bay, who at least tells a story without overdoing his usual editorial distractions, shaky cameras and extreme closeups, were making a slapstick comedy or a Tarantinoesque crime flick of the heist nature. We begin with a flash of Mark Walhberg’s Daniel Lugo being chased by the police, his body flying in the air and his head smashing into a windshield: That’s the future and we quickly leap to the past where our story, eventually narrated by just about every character on board, properly introduces Lugo as a personal trainer in a mediocre weight lifting gym. He really takes his job seriously, wanting his clients to become as buff as he is. Especially the annoyingly opinionated millionaire Victor Kershaw who, played by Tony Shalhoub, becomes the target for a bizarre kidnapping scheme. Lugo’s partners in crime are likewise muscular dimwits: African American Adrian (Anthony Mackie) has an embarrassing testosterone problem while Dwayne Johnson’s Paul Doyle, the Curly of these particular STOOGES, is an ex-convict Born Again to an intentionally idiotic level. The most involving scenes have the trio putting their plan into action, which includes several failed attempts. The characters work great together as criminal climbers, playing off each other’s gifts (muscle) and shortcomings (brains). After Victor’s successfully kidnapped the film morphs into a half-baked dark comedy where torture and violence is treated like a pie fight; yet there’s still a plot at hand. It’s when Victor’s out of the picture (somewhat) and the buffoons get deeper and deeper in a hole… Doyle becomes a cokehead and Lugo plans an even more ludicrous scheme… you’ll wish they’d attempt something simple, like bank robbery or a jewelry heist – at least they’d have a destination! Ed Harris as Victor’s gumshoe investigator, eventually putting the jigsaw together, is only necessary for tying up all the loose ends, which should have happened much sooner.

DeNiro is 70; Keaton 66. They are hardly the stuff of comedy leads in 2013. Back in 1958 they had a pushing 30 Steve McQueen playing a 17 year old high student and even then audiences found their credulity pressed a bit. What would make a director believe the same would not hold true today even if it is a bit of a reverse. Does anyone really want to see a movie that features their great grandparents having sex? Perhaps better casting might have helped this film, along with a better plot, direction, and writing. And yes this is the age of the potty comedy as The Hangover series can attest; but sometimes the age of the actor can alter crude to just gross. Really, does any 20 to 30 something, the typical moviegoer, see Keaton as a sex object? Note that Galifianakis (over 40) and Cooper (pushing 40) are also getting a bit long in the tooth to sustain credibility.

The fifth entry in the Scary Movie franchise drops any attempt at continuity, and remains content to simply spoof some of the more recent horror (and other) movies – specifically, Paranormal Activity, the Evil Dead remake, Mama, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, Inception, Black Swan, the 50 Shades Of Grey books. There is no plot to synopsise – the thing is made up of sequences lifted from each film nailed together with no real regard for making any sense. Just the same as the previous five, in fact. After an opening sequence in which Charlie Sheen and Lindsey Lohan happily lampoon their reputations, Ashley Tisdale takes on the female protagonist role, and is the only recognisable name, as the spoofery unfolds. Miss Tisdale does quite well here (and features in some very entertaining corpsing in end-titles outtakes). Like all these movies, the success of the spoofs depends on whether you have seen the source material, what sort of mood you are in and so on – my feeling is that this particular entry wasn’t as good as the early Scary Movies, but was substantially better than the regrettable Date Movie, for instance.

I actually loved the trailers and couldn’t wait to see this movie. Though in the past many trailers have been top notch but the movie just didn’t match up. Well in the case of the Croods, the trailers were nice but the movie was just a great, brilliant and amazing feat. The animation quality is brilliant, excellent animation that is enchanting and magical. The story very moving and heartfelt and had some really emotional and moving scenes handled very intelligently. The characters are endearing and you just can’t help but love them all, absolutely lovable. This action packed adventure is just an epic and thrilling ride GUARANTEED to keep you (child and adult) at the edge of your seat. Breathtaking visuals and heart racing scenes. An adventure of a lifetime is all i can say. Spectacular and fun. The entire family dynamic of The Croods is so amazingly portrayed and extremely ratable. With educational snippets guaranteed to get kids interested in topics such as plate tectonics and continental shift and drift etc. And many heartwarming and yet smartly handled lessons to be learned along the way. What a great film. Now for the humor. It is brilliant, smart humor that will have you in stitches. I have not laughed that hard in a long long time. I laughed until i cried and no i am not exaggerating. The entire theater was in stitches booming with laughter. It was just great fun. The child in the row ahead of me commented to his mother how he was loving this amazing movie to which his mother replied that she too thought it was awesome! The college kids who came as a group were in hysterics and seemed to enjoy this movie just as much. Even a grandmother who sat next to me couldn’t control herself and was enjoying this great family film with the rest of us. To put it plainly, the whole family will love it. It is the perfect family movie: smart, hilarious, sweet and emotional. And whats great is you will enjoy it even if you go on your own. So many individuals came to watch it on their own and they enjoyed it as much as the families did. Usually many comedy movies will have a chuckle here and there but this one had myself and the rest of the audience in fits of uncontrollable laughter from start till finish. One of those films where time just flies by and since you are thoroughly enjoying yourself, you just don’t notice the time pass. GREAT WORK DREAMWORKS! They really are stepping it up as of late. ROTG was fantastic and now this film is carrying on the trend of brilliant animated films. Looking forward Dreamworks Studios next endeavor and if this film is anything to go by, i see many more great films ahead from this studio.

I went to see this abomination in the theatre today and got exactly what I expected: a predictable romantic comedy without the comedy. The only reason I saw it is because one of my friends absolutely ADORES Tina Fey so she HAD to see this movie. Unfortunately, I was the victim she dragged along to witness it. There are very few, if any, redeeming values here. The plot is thin, boring, and worst of all predictable. Not a single thing happens that the audience couldn’t have figured out beforehand. Tina Fey plays the world’s worst admissions officer who is being heckled by a teacher, played by Paul Rudd, to admit one of his “prodigy” students into Princeton. Conveniently, they’re both single and he’s got an adopted son. I’m not spoiling anything by saying they end up in each others arms by the time the credits roll. Oh, and the kid ends up getting admitted. Amazing. Never saw that coming. The acting isn’t too awful but the dialogue is absolutely repulsive. The script mostly has characters uttering one-liners instead of giving them anything meaningful to say. As a result, we are forced to watch cardboard cutouts making unfunny jokes for 2 hours. Most of the jokes fall flat completely, inducing more groans than laughs. I can’t tell you how many times I cringed while watching this garbage. Ugh. The manner in which this movie was edited made me wonder whether the director is suffering from ADD. Random scenes are slapped together with seemingly no effort to maintain a coherent storyline. This achieves nothing but to annoy the audience. All in all, a crummy movie. Tina Fey should definitely stick to SNL as movies are clearly not her thing.

I saw this tonight and was hoping for better but was not entirely surprised. Like other Harmony Korine fare, Spring Breakers plays like a warning about the growing immorality of youth culture, but is curiously lurid and titillating in the way it goes about delivering the too obvious message. The irony was not lost on me. The movie is about a group of four college girls who go on a spring break holiday to a hot spot in Florida. Three of the girls rob a store with plastic guns to acquire the money for the trip. In Florida, they party hard, have sex and do drugs. Eventually they are incarcerated on minor drug charges. It appears that they spend one night in jail. They remain clad in bikinis while in jail and while being arraigned in court. They are then bailed out by a local gangster who wants them to be his harem. Three of the four go along and immerse themselves in his criminal world. The “good” girl, Faith (Selena Gomez), declines and returns home. Apart from the Gomez character, none of the other three have distinct personalities. They are essentially interchangeable. They have no arc. They are not corrupted. They were always corrupt. The gangster isn’t someone who manipulates them. He is more like a kindred spirit. Gomez does display a flash of acting chops here. The rest are portraying characters too shallow to really gauge their performances. It’s too bad the Gomez character exits halfway through. She could have continued to function as a foil for the other three. What ensues in the final acts is predictably just an escalation of everything which had gone on before it but without the morality of Faith as a counterpoint. Korine unfolds the tale in a fragmented and disjointed manner, using slow mo, color saturation/de-saturation and other stylistic techniques. It plays like an extended music video. At its best, it’s hypnotic; at its worse, pretentious. Either way, the stylistic overload will leave most viewers feeling rather detached. We cannot really connect with these characters or their circumstance. They are not subjects but objects. This is not a morality tale about how crime doesn’t pay. To Korine’s credit, he avoids such cliché. However, the film is too thematically shallow for anyone to argue that it isn’t simply voyeuristic. This movie is more about flesh than anything else. You know those movies which are comedies and/or romances that feature lots of footage of scantily spring breakers dancing in and around beaches and pools, featuring lots of jiggly parts? This has about as much of that as any 4 of those movies put together. If you like to see hot young women both scantily clad and un-clad, this is not such a bad thing. But let’s call it Girls Gone Wild. Don’t give us Girls Gone Wild under a thin and shallow artistic veneer.

Steve Carrell and Jim Carey together, with a touch of Steve Buscemi… a perfect combination made in comedy heaven, and throw in a little Alan Arkin, and you get this half-baked film with so much promise and so little to praise. Here you got people trying really hard to play dumb, absurd, push the buttons, the limits, and what we have is so much frustration because you wonder if this is just bad editing, some poor judgment, or some sloppy writing. I hated the character of Burt and felt pity for Anton, so I knew what the basics of the plot were. What was missing was the lack of character development, the need to have a director who understood timing because very little was funny here. In “There’s Something About Mary” and “The Three Stooges” the physical comedy works, our dislike for some horrible characters still provokes uneasy laughter. In here, we look at what could be a train wreck, but we feel very little. Jim Carrey’s scenes are a good example of this syndrome. He goes for shock value and is acting his heart out when he does each one of his progressively dangerous and disgusting magic tricks. Still, we barely wince. There could be so much more to the character of Burt. He’s such a repulsive egotistical snake at first, then he grows likable but the strokes are too broad, not giving him enough time to act the part. I think he is very talented and underused here. The fact that even his costumes were not even that “crazy” or “ridiculous” didn’t help. Another case of could have been, should have been…

Description

The modern day phenomenon of identity theft could have been explored in a serious film full of pathos. This film however is a comedy that deals with the same situation. As such therefore, whilst there is some pathos, this film is generally played for laughs. There are a few laugh-out-loud moments and some gross-out humour. This is perhaps the flaw in the film, the situation we are meant to laugh at is one in which a really nice person has their identity stolen by a really nasty piece of work. Jason Bateman plays Sandy, a really nice guy. As film opens his identity gets stolen by Melissa McCarthy. She is a nasty piece of work, who enjoys her work, which consists of stealing the identities of other people. To be precise, she gets their personal details and uses those details to clone counterfeit credit-cards. The cards themselves she uses to finance her life-style. A hedonistic life-style that is dedicated to short-term gratification. However the life-style of the thief seems empty and sad. By contrast however, the victim of the crime is seen to have a decent life. Not a comfortable life-style, but he does have a job, is happily married, with kids. He is an honest family man, struggling in his everyday life. The strength of the film lies in the contrasting characters and their life-styles. When film opens, Sandy and his wife are seen together, they are happy because they have saved 14 dollars from the house-keeping bills. The contrasting scene is that of the thief in a bar, drinking, courtesy of a counterfeit credit-card. These are key scenes, which set the stage for the rest of the film. We can empathise very easily with the victim and despise the really unpleasant thief. The plot of the film is simply and easily told. Our working stiff has his credit-card declined, as his card has been maxed out by the thief. Not only that though, there are also legal complications caused by the thief. The police become involved and the life of this ordinary man starts to fall apart. To keep things together he will have to leave Denver and track down the thief. In a scene that tells you all you need to know about this man, he tells his children that he has to leave Denver and go to the most evil city in the world. That city is Miami. His plan is simple, go to Miami, confront the thief and bring her back to Denver to get things sorted out. He scrapes together enough cash and flies off. The rest of the film details the events that befall thief and victim, these events also trigger character development for them as well as generating some pathos and even a few questions about circumstances and environment. This is a Universal film and it has to be said that the acting in it is universally good, from the very oldest thespians to the youngest. The scenes of the father with his children are very realistic and touching. Two actors who have played some of Hollywoods nastiest villains are in this film. Robert Patrick of Terminator 2 has a small part, some will also remember him for his role as the sports-shop owner and friend of Tony who gets into debt in ‘The Soprano’s’. Jonathon Banks, who played the psychopathic henchman of Victor Maitland in ‘Beverley Hills Cop’, here has the smallest of roles. This however is not to downgrade the performance of any of the others. These thespians are not big names but most have done a fair bit of film and TV work over the years. All acted to the hilt, giving convincing and versatile performances. All were a joy as were the location scenes. The film is rated 15, in the UK, due to the adult themes. This film is not a great piece of work, as a comedy it is not even all that funny, however it does entertain and is also touching and thoughtful to some small degree. As such, this comedy, whilst it started off being rather unpleasant, ended up slightly exceeding my expectations. Therefore I have surprised myself by finally deciding to give it a 10/10.

The cast of this movie is quite outstanding by itself. Although all of those great actors appear for only a few minutes because of the format of the movie, every one of them is quite hilarious – the character and the play, I mean. Movie 47 is made of several short episodes, connected with a general story of some teenagers viewing short scenes on the internet. This format gave freedom to the script writers and made the humour flow freely (like the Family Guy) without the obligation of having-to-stick-to-the-story (like the South Park). Both of the shows I compared to are by all means great, and so is the Movie 43. Racism, sexism, course language, all kinds of humour (they even made fun of the coprofiles) – all of that and much more in here. My favourite part was the one with the domestic education (mostly because of Naomi Watts <3), but they are all great. Great script, great play, an hour and a half of pure laughter. I personally don’t like comedies much, because they mostly tend to exploit one character in a strange situation (like the ones with rob Schneider, pardon my language) or just repeat some fart jokes, or be made for black audiences mostly, but this one is very different. I mean, check out the cast. Those number of celebritites just cant gather up in something bad. Movie 43 is a must see. Worth every cent you pay for the ticket. If they say you live longer for every minute your laugh, this movie is gonna widen your life quite a lot.

Having read the novel, I had some prior expectations about the movie. I tried to judge the movie solely on itself, but it’s hard to shake what I knew. Have you ever seen something out of the corner of your eye late at night, but when you turn to look, nothing’s there? What if something really was there, and you gained the ability to see those beings? That’s what John Dies at the End is about – being able to see those creepy things in the night! John Dies at the End is told mostly as a story as the main character, Dave, recounts his adventures to a journalist. Those scenes were fantastic. While the setting of the odd Chinese restaurant was a part of this, the character of Arnie was more responsible. Paul Giamatti plays Arnie Blondestone, and he’s absolutely perfect for the role. He seems so unimposing and a bit bland while at the same time just a tad odd, which is perfect for the character. On the subject of casting and acting, all the characters were cast well. Chase Williamson is great as Dave, Rob Mayes plays a good, aloof John (although he looks tougher than I expected), and Clancy Brown is great as Dr. Albert Marconi. Many things have changed from the book, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The story has been greatly condensed with some subplots ignored, some characters removed (or merged), and, unfortunately, some important details missing. While the initial setup and development is great in the first half of the movie even with the condensation, the latter half of the film suffers. There doesn’t seem to be enough justification for the characters’ actions. Things happen very suddenly at the end, and while some of the changes from the book are fun, it still feels incomplete. Despite a rushed plot, John Dies at the End was still a terrific movie for people who like slightly cheesy sci-fi or horror films. While I complained about the rushed plot, it’s probably not as noticeable to someone who hadn’t read the book. John Dies at the End is probably best enjoyed late at night when you’re liable to see things in the shadows!

Firstly let me answer those who have stated that the senility was over-acted for comic effect. IT WAS NOT. My mother worked in aged care for many years, and I grew up with all this about me. It’s exactly like that. It was brilliantly done, all of it, all the actors… and wasn’t it a treat to see all the old opera and stage stars? Some ”official” critics, (and by the way, what exactly ‘?’ qualifies one to critique anything? I’ve seen more films than most of these people, I’d guess), have said this film lacked the BIG moments. IT DID NOT. The moments are there, you just have to know people – humanity. It did lack being smacked over the head repeatedly with the obvious…so I guess those bred on a diet of Hollywood(our viewers are so stupid we must hand-hold all the way through and belabour the most self evident details)MOVIES, aren’t going to be thrilled or interested. I was. I also like Alien and Predator movies, so it’s not being said with any sort of bias. If you liked Enchanted April, and The Whales of August, The Grass Harp, and Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day, you’ll like this a lot.

I was worried as I started watching it that I wouldn’t be as affected by it as I was by the book. It all worked on me by the end of it though. I think the book did a lot more for Carson and the students and the movie did a lot more for his parents and April. ALLISON JANNEY WAS WONDERFUL. And Christina Hendricks – her side of the story was really missed in the book. So many different sides/themes were missed in the book, but the thoughts and build up in the book made the story feel longer. I think I would have liked the movie more if I hadn’t had read the book because of that – I had different expectations for this movie, so it was a lot better on its second viewing. Rebel Wilson, Sarah Hyland, and Ashley Rickards were great. Chris Colfer knocked it out of the park. Polly Bergen as Carson’s grandma was amazing, as well. Angela Kinsey’s character, the school counselor, was adorable and funny. Actually, the acting was pretty stellar all across the board, except for the one teacher at the beginning of the movie telling Carson what his essay was about. That was bad. April and Sheryl were the best characters, and the best scenes were between Sheryl and Carson, in my opinion. The adult characters were written better and more fleshed out, which made the scenes with Carson’s family on a different level than with the school scenes. However, though the movie didn’t have a lot on the kids Carson blackmailed, I prefer it to the book because the book had Carson too preachy to me when he apologized to the kids/gave them speeches/noticed Vicki cut herself/etc – things were spelled out too much. In the movie I loved that we weren’t told how to feel about Carson or the other kids. He was shown as an unlikeable character (but I did really like him) and that his behavior towards his peers had consequences. Even if high school isn’t forever, you still shouldn’t treat that experience like it doesn’t matter. In the book, he and Malerie’s relationship was better and he decided to listen to her more and be a better friend right before he died. He started to care about his peers instead of just looking down on them because they couldn’t do what he could do. After he blows up at everyone when he tells them he’s blackmailing them to enter his literary magazine, he turns around to talk to Malerie but realizes she had left too, like he couldn’t stop himself from scaring her off, as well. I think having that scene in the movie would have helped Carson’s character in the eyes of the viewer. The revelation of Carson’s positive energy in his death was more special to me in the book because it showed how he really changed and finally had a positive outlook on his life before he died. I’m sad Sheryl didn’t say the line about how Carson was positive when he was struck in the movie, because that was the line that really made me love it and understand it. But this line was “the boy who flew” in the movie to me, so I still really loved how it ended. It still showed he had managed to accomplish things, and that he achieved his dream of getting into his college of choice even if he didn’t get to go to it. The voice-over about needing dreams to take his time was very inspirational, and the last line before the credits with the rising music sealed the message. It wasn’t a perfect movie, but it was still pretty good. Watch it.

When Alice (Marisa Tomei) and Phil (Tom Everett Scott) have to leave town for an influential business trip, they are forced to entrust their three hellion children to Alice’s parents, the equally hellion Artie (Billy Crystal) and Diane (Bette Midler). Hilarity ensues. You watch a movie with Billy Crystal to laugh, and he doesn’t disappoint. Crystal keeps in tune with the easygoing wit that made his hosting the Oscars so funny. “Parental Guidance” is a return to what made him famous in the first place: nice, funny family-friendly comedy. Bette Midler is one of the only fairer-sex comediennes that could play opposite the scene-chewing Crystal. They make a great pair, and divvy out the laughs equally as hopelessly inept, secretly genius parents. The script is written with a focus on the family being an audience, which is not to say the individual or the date can’t enjoy it just as much. I was laughing in the first ten minutes, and it kept a steady procession of comical response. Marisa Tomei is still a stunning beauty. She steals her scenes with unrivaled grace, no matter the movie, and here plays a mom different than her own parents. The comparison makes for a laugh in itself; especially where Crystal and Tomei interact. There’s no smut, no swearing, and no vulgarity. “Parental Guidance” is a refreshing blend of old and new that proves what made the classic laughs so great. Well done.

Mama don’t let your boys grow up to be cowboys or better yet organic chemist. In this fun tale you see Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen) is on a mission to sell his discovered organic cleaning product and find a distributor. In a caring move he invites his mother Joyce Brewster (Barbra Streisand) to come along for the eight day cross country trip. Most movies feature two guys or girls in a crazy road trip but never a mother and son. Freud was right, we all have mother issues and Andy finally deals with his overbearing mother as he sets out to discover his own identity. This movie is fun, touching, and is above the bond between mother and son. In the preview I saw I took my own mother and she enjoyed it. In a special live simulcast with Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen they took questions about the Road Trip. According to Streisand, she was pursued by director Ann Fletcher for the role. It was not until she read the script out loud with her own son that she fell in love with the role. Streisand did a phenomenal job and you get the feeling that the role is way below her pay grade. They did accommodate all her request. All the scenes were shot within forty five minutes of her house in Malibu, California and she did not even have to drive. According to the pop diva, she has not driven for over a decade. She was also asked if she would ever like to take a road trip with someone and she said Marlon Brando. She did take a day trip with him once to check out the desert wild flowers once and had fun. When asked if Babs had any resemblance with his real life mother, Rogen said that they are both strong Jewish women but that his mother resembled more a past character that Streisand played in Meet the Fockers. His mother is a Jewish hippie type of woman. The Guilt Trip opens December 19, perfect for the holiday season and a fun tale of love, joy, and celebrating life. In the end it will make you appreciate your mother and the characters discovered that they were more alike than different.

Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) are turning 40; Judd Apatow, master of the contemporary raunchy social comedy, is growing up with them. His newest comedy, This is 40, hits every hot button for today’s pre-boomer narcissists from denying the birthday to the challenge of having a baby at a late age. It’s not the funniest film in recent memory, for the multiple issues are mostly serious stuff. The sometimes underplayed responses to these issues are humorous but not enough to lighten the gravitas. Wrangling with their teen daughter, Sadie (Maude Apatow), never hits a mirthful sweet spot, dealing with a mooching father, Larry (Albert Brooks), and an absentee father/grandfather, Oliver (John Lithgow), all make for serious confrontations, hardly the stuff of great comedy. Considering Apatow’s similar comedies, The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up (this film is Pete and Debbie’s life a few years after), This is 40 is more serious, certainly less raunchy (Pete sitting on a commode playing Scrabble is as scatological as it gets), more mature but with a plethora of problems not solved. For all its missteps including a not really funny Viagra riff and groaner mammogram joke, it still has amusing and real moments such as Albert Brooks as Pete’s mooching father. This is 40 will make you nervous for the time you can claim your 40.

I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to this film. First of all, I think it’s about time I profess my love for David O’Russell because he keeps making movies that I simply can’t get enough of. If there’s one thing I’ve learned this year when it comes to movies, it’s find a director you love and follow him or her blindly. There’s styles you’ll love, and styles you’ll hate, find the ones you click with and never let go. Silver Linings Playbook has generated a lot of hype since its worldwide premiere at TIFF, and frankly, as far as I’m concerned, it deserves all the praise its received. It is by far the best film I saw at the festival, and is easily one of the most memorable films of 2012. Based on the novel by Matthew Quick, Silver Linings follows the life of Pat (Bradley Cooper) as he moves back into his parents’ house after spending months in a mental institution because of a violent outburst that occurred after he found his wife with another man. The movie follows Pat as he attempts to get back his life back, but he meets a new challenge as Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence, who is completely girl crush worthy) finds his way into his life. I honestly can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a movie more from beginning to end. O’Russell brilliantly tells a heartwarming, yet complicated and hilarious tale, that leaves you on the edge of the seat. The cast is wonderful, and all deserving of nominations in the 2012 award season. If people didn’t know of Jennifer Lawrence before, they will now. She’s quirky, complicated, hilarious, and you really just can’t get enough of her. DeNiro also delivers a strong performance as Cooper’s Philadelphia Eagle’s loving, somewhat OCD father. If there is one movie worth seeing this year, it’s Silver Linings Playbook. The story may follow a family in a very serious situation, but we can all identity with the truth and emotions that comes with struggling through times. It’s a story that’s easy to connect with, and it’s a film that will make you smile from beginning to end. Catch this movie when it comes out in November, and I promise you, you won’t regret it.

I try extremely hard to not read reviews, especially for Oscar hopefuls. At Telluride and Toronto, Roger Michell’s Hyde Park on Hudson received mixed-to-negative reviews citing the film’s weak screenplay and other off-putting manners. Chalk this up to a guilty pleasure but I found Hyde Park on Hudson charmingly delightful. From the charismatic turn by Bill Murray as FDR to what I found to be a near pitch-perfect performance by Samuel West, the stylistic quality by director Roger Michell was satisfying. The clear problem with the film is the screenplay by Richard Nelson. One thing that annoys me about films sometimes is when a screenwriter (or director) choose to begin a film in what feels like the 45th minute of the film. The film tells the story of Margaret Suckley (Laura Linney), FDR’s fifth cousin, and her relationship with the president (Bill Murray) surrounding his visit from the King (Samuel West) and Queen (Olivia Colman) of England in 1939. Nelson chooses to start the film with nearly zero back story for Suckley and the bridge to the famous Hyde Park on Hudson. The film is rushed right into the thick of the story (and a hand job) within 10 minutes time. It also doesn’t help that the film is overtly misogynistic in tone and view towards women. I can definitely see many people being offended. Surprise standout Samuel West as “King George” Outside of writing, Hyde Park on Hudson is pure fun and harmlessly amusing. This is one of Murray’s best performances, dancing his way throughout the film with magnetism and allure. Laura Linney is fine in a role that brings a lot of frustration to the audience. As Queen Elizabeth, Olivia Colman brings precision and authority to the role that lacked in Helena Bonham Carter’s role in Tom Hooper’s The King Speech (2010). Colman’s role allows for Hollywood to see how good she is and will hopefully lead to more available roles for her to shine. Olivia Williams, a brilliant and underrated actress, is simply outstanding in her minimal screen time as Eleanor Roosevelt. If she had more development added to her character, Williams would be on an Oscar ballot easy. With the small amount she has, Williams still delivers an Oscar- worthy turn. Best-in-show goes to Samuel West as King George IV, who manages to steal the spotlight from the likes of Murray and Colman without even trying. It’s a performance that stands among some of the best of 2012 so far. It’s an impressive and surprising turn by West. The sets are very well done by Production Designer Simon Bowles while the score by Jeremy Sams stands out as one of the year’s creative thus far. “Hyde Park” is loads of entertainment and thoroughly enjoyable.

Description

A modestly affecting reconciliation drama wrapped in a so-so sports movie by way of a misogynistic romantic comedy, “Playing for Keeps” can’t stop tripping all over itself. Returning to Hollywood filmmaking after his 2010 Italian laffer “Kiss Me Again,” helmer Gabriele Muccino doesn’t go as spectacularly astray as he did in 2008’s “Seven Pounds,” but this cluttered tale of a past-his-prime soccer player trying to win back his ex-wife and son still hits too many false notes to realize its core emotional potential. Toplined by Gerard Butler but distinguished by Jessica Biel, the FilmDistrict release should score middling returns. An opening sequence uses cleverly degraded faux-video footage to show studly George Dryer (Butler) at the mid-’90s height of his soccer career. Several years later, he’s living in a Virginia suburb, struggling to make the rent and attempting to re-establish a connection with his former wife, Stacie (Biel), and their young son, Lewis (Noah Lomax). Stacie, who’s about to remarry, has made peace with George, and encourages him to spend time with his son. Conveniently enough, Lewis’ soccer team needs a coach, and his deadbeat dad fits the bill perfectly. Too perfectly: George proves popular not just with the kids, but with their single and/or unhappily married moms, who just can’t get enough of the tousle-haired athlete and his irresistible accent. It’s at this point that “Playing for Keeps,” after barreling along in conventional but inoffensive fashion, devolves into an unfunny parade of female sexpots, mystifyingly played by actresses one would have assumed to be well above this level of mistreatment. Robbie Fox’s flailing script contrives to have George fend off the advances of a weepy, clingy divorcee (Judy Greer), a frustrated housewife (Uma Thurman) and, worst of all, a scheming temptress (Catherine Zeta-Jones) who just so happens to be in a position to land George an ESPN sportscaster gig. One half expects Jennifer Connelly to turn up as a lovelorn FIFA referee. These caricatures achieve little, apart from perhaps flattering star-producer Butler’s vanity, and they hardly leave the viewer in a receptive mood for the more tolerable bonding scenes between George and Lewis, who has clearly inherited some of his dad’s soccer genes. While Butler and young Lomax build an engaging enough rapport, Muccino, who dealt with father-son relations much more sensitively in “The Pursuit of Happyness,” seems content to turn Lewis’ feelings on and off at will, dramatizing his plight with all the emotional commitment of a light switch. Butler, playing his second athletic father figure of the season (after “Chasing Mavericks”), is solid enough, and gets to speak with his native brogue, though his scruffy, mildly charming meathead routine is starting to wear thin. It’s Biel who almost singlehandedly elevates the picture to a realm of honest feeling: Providing a classy corrective to her ill-served distaff co-stars, the actress makes her character smart, tough, yet still achingly vulnerable, signaling years of long-suffering backstory with her eyes alone. Biel is so good that, when the time inevitably comes for Stacie to choose between the two men in her life, one yearns for her to consider herself first. Despite its relatively straightforward story elements, “Playing for Keeps” never coheres, undone by its wobbly tone and weakness for tidily artificial moments and plot developments. Tech credits are as generic as the pic’s title (changed from the racier original, “Playing the Field”). Camera (Technicolor, widescreen), Peter Menzies; editor, Padraic McKinley; music, Andrea Guerra; production designer, Daniel T. Until a friend suggested going to see this movie, I hadn’t even heard of it, and other than what I gathered from skimming the synopsis in the cinema-foyer listings-leaflet -it seemed to be some kind of comedy, and starred Bruce Willis as a gambler-, I wasn’t sure what it was about. And now, after sitting through all ninety-four incoherent, enervating minutes of it, I’m still not sure. One of my friends, who is usually uncritical and easily entertained, said he thought that “The Tree of Life” made more sense than this film. Unlike Terrence Malick’s “metaphysical masterpiece” however, there is no confusion here as to what the subject matter is (it’s the life of professional gamblers), what is confusing is how that subject matter is presented, and how the narrative is (or isn’t) constructed around it. For example, what was the intended tone of the movie, what was the film-maker trying to convey? Was it supposed to be amusing? entertaining? or moving? were we supposed to be excited, or to feel intellectually stimulated? Who knows. My main emotional reaction to the film was a kind of repulsion, because I felt like I was being exploited, like the film was insulting my intelligence and my basic humanity. Like I might expect to feel if I’d been suckered into spending an evening feeding coins to a slot machine. The first 10 minutes were slightly amusing to be fair, but after that that it just descends into complete mind-numbing absurdity. You might think Vince Vaughn would offer some comic-relief but, for the brief appearances he makes, he’s just going through the motions (though it’s still the most convincing and consistent performance of the movie). There was no tension, or intrigue, at all, for the first seventy minutes. I mean nothing seems to really matter to any of the characters, they behave so unrealistically, and incoherently. And when things finally seem to get real and there is some adversity for the characters to face, you just don’t care because you can’t feel sympathy for such pantomime puppets as these. They could have gone more into the details, the mechanics, of the gambling operation, that might have been interesting, but they thought it would be better to pad the story out with completely vapid romantic-interest scenes. Maybe, with the attraction of Willis, Zeta-Jones, Vaughn, (and Rebecca Hall’s legs), it was thought that such things as humour, narrative direction, consistency and pacing, character development, etc., were unnecessary. After seeing the movie, I learned that it was adapted from a book, that at least goes some way towards explaining why there were so many undeveloped, seemingly irrelevant details, obviously included for the sake of those that have read it. For example, Holly (Laura Pripon’s character) keeps warning Beth that she is becoming “one of us”, in the book there might be context for this but when you watch the film you’re just like “what is this I don’t even….” But, even for those that have read the book, maybe more-so, this film will only bemuse and bewilder. While I’m informed the book was written in a ‘picaresque’ -and no doubt droll (not to mention self-deprecating) style-, on screen, without the benefit of a narrator, this translates into characters, like Beth, who starts off as some kind of cartoon-airhead-bimbo-stripper, sunbathing with baby-oil on her back, ending up as an extraordinarily articulate, mathematical genius, who goes on to become a writer… Rebecca Hall was a bad choice. And another thing, I couldn’t help feeling that this film was not-too-subtly trying to indoctrinate me. Maybe I’m just paranoid but, beyond just the obvious product placements (nice Mercedes being driven by Bruce Willis’ Mr. Nice character), it’s like they’re glamorizing the lifestyle, and completely glossing over any moral issues, and Beth just follows the money from Las Vegas to New York to Curaçao -are we supposed to admire that, to forget about community, and meaningful relationships, just go where the money is and keep working and consuming?-. Whatever, I’ve wasted enough time on this drivel already, please heed my warning and don’t waste yours.

Have you ever felt like you were stuck in a role you never wanted to play? Constantly subjected to scorn and ridicule simply for performing the only task available to you? What if you could change that? Fix-it Felix Jr. has been a popular game in Litvak’s for years. The hero and titular character, Felix (voiced by Jack McBrayer) has a magic hammer that can repair any damage done by the game’s villain, Ralph. When the game is over, Felix is given a medal while Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) is tossed off the roof by the tenants of the building he failed to destroy. When the arcade closes and the game is turned off, Ralph returns to his home atop a garbage heap in the nearby dump. For recreation, he visits Tapper’s, a vintage game that assigns the player the role of a bartender. Also, upon our introduction to the story, Ralph makes his first visit to a support group for video game villains. Among the villains in attendance at Bad-Anon, we see M. Bison and Zangief from Street Fighter (voiced by Gerald C. Rivers and director Rich Moore respectively), a ghost from Pac-Man (voiced by Kevin Deters), and a zombie (Raymond Persi). During that meeting, he announces he no longer wants to be a bad guy. With the 30th anniversary of Fix-it Felix Jr., the tenants throw a party and “forget” to invite Ralph. Ralph crashes the party, in every sense of the word, and leaves soon after. Before he’s left, he vows to return with a medal, something denied him by Felix and the tenants of the building he destroys. He seizes the opportunity to travel to a new game, a first-person shooter game called Hero’s Duty, when a character from that game passes out in the bathroom. While at the center of Hero’s Duty, Ralph is overwhelmed by the violence in modern games and refuses to heed the orders of his superior, Sergeant Calhoun (voiced by Jane Lynch). Once the arcade closes and the game ends, Ralph decides to forgo the usual hurdles of Hero’s Duty and steal the medal typically awarded to the winner. After stealing the medal and, unwittingly, bringing a menacing enemy insect known as a Cy-bug with him, Ralph heads to the kart-racing game Sugar Rush. It’s there that he encounters the perpetually glitchy and terminally annoying Vanellope von Schweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman). Despite the initial friction, Ralph and Vanellope (Silverman) bond over their shared status as outcasts. There is, of course, more to the story including Felix’s pursuit of Ralph into the various other games and his budding romance with the no-nonsense Sergeant Calhoun, the true origin of Silverman’s character, and an eventual revolt in the world of Sugar Rush. All of it, and I do mean all of it, had me riveted. I will say that, as a fan of old-style video games, I would’ve preferred seeing the character of Ralph travel to more than just the two different games besides his. Regardless of my criticisms, Wreck-It Ralph is hilariously entertaining and fun for viewers of all ages. Check it out.

There was a time when Tim Burton was systematically churning out great, original, quirky movies that endeared him to the general public and earned him a large amount of die-hard followers who hung on to every last idiosyncratic trademark. These followers have had a particularly hard time these last few years, ever since Tim Burton started to spoil. True, he was still using all of the unique little devices that made us love him, but his heart was not in the movies, and they all turned out commercialized and soulless, the cool “Tim Burton-ambiance” mocking us by hinting at how good he used to be. I’m glad to say now that has all changed. “Frankenweenie” starts by showing the audience the ordinary life of an extraordinary kid called Victor, a young boy with no friends, but a burning passion for his specialist subjects (horror movies, film making and science), a childhood that will surely resonate with both Tim Burton and the majority of his fans. Then, to the surprise of no-one who has seen the poster for the movie or heard the title, his beloved dog dies, and Victor conducts an experiment to bring him back to life, á la Frankenstein. From that moment, everything gets deliciously out of hand and grows into a classic “there is an imminent problem at hand that we need someone to deal with before this all goes down the toilet”-movie that we all love. While the movie does not really develop its characters deeply and sometimes drops certain plot lines we would have liked to see more of, it makes up for it tenfold with the thing that Tim Burton has more of than anybody else: imagination. So many moments in this movie are truly original, clever and, best of all, funny. “Frankenweenie” is a giant tribute to old horror flicks, set against a sweet story of a kid and his dog. It will find its way into the great list of “Must see childhood movies” and will remain there for the ages, much like his previous hits “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Edward Scissorhands”. I’m giving it a very high rating, not just because it is a great movie, but because it is proof of that Tim Burton still has great things inside of him, that might well be brought back to life one dark and stormy night.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA wasn’t as clever (nor as fun) as I imagined. I even went for it during my birthday; since 2009 I’ve been celebrating my birthday by going to the cinema and this year I had three potential choices: THE WATCH, DREDD 3D and this one. It was a question of time that I ended watching “Transylvania” over THE WATCH, which was the one I truly wanted to enjoy. Anyway, I have to mention that one of the trailers I got to watch was the one of the upcoming Disney film WRECK-IT RALPH; it seems that “Ralph” will not miss the chance to deliver really clever material out of a mash-up of classic characters (video games characters, like Nintendo’s Bowser, in that case). “Transylvania”, on the contrary, missed its chance with the classic “Universal Monsters” (Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Mummy, the Invisible Man) and some others monsters. It’s clear that the whole horror atmosphere was the reason I wanted to check this one out. Here’s a piece of advice for anyone who wants to watch it as well as a horror fan, looking for some nice and fun references or something like that: watch this year’s PARANORMAN instead, or something like MONSTER HOUSE (Gil Kenan, 2006), as there’s pretty much nothing worthy of admiration here. Well, there’s something nice in the last section of the film and I will explain it to make a point. The core of the storyline is that Dracula (voice of Adam Sandler – definitely his best or better said, his only honorable work in the last years) built a place for any monster that wanted some peace; a hotel nowhere nears a human civilization. So we have monsters that basically don’t know humans; the nice thing comes when they finally go out and get to see some horror fans (in a way this thing is like that with Johnny Deep, as an 18th-century vampire, waking up in the seventies, from DARK SHADOWS); eventually, there’s a terrific joke on the TWILIGHT thing: we have Dracula (or “Drac”, as he is referred during the whole movie) totally disappointed after getting to see how humans represent the monsters by watching some TWILIGHT! Good stuff, right? However, the point I want to make is that there’s always a problem when a movie that judges how awful the horror genre has been treated lately is itself making, for instance, a Kanye West sort-of rapper out of Dracula. I mean, I get it, I get that right from the first scene of the movie we are going to watch a different version of Dracula, as, after all, this is a kid’s flick (in fact, we have Dracula as a single father!). However, the whole thing is sort- of annoying, even if you accept it as something completely unrelated to the classic monsters. It’s one of those, like the last MADAGASCAR, with lots of things going on. There’s a lot of noise but nothing that truly gets you or that makes you laugh hard (there are, nevertheless, some funny bits involving the Invisible Man). That’s on one hand, and on the other we have a formulaic story about an over-protective father and love. In conclusion, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA is average material that totally wastes its main attraction.

“Pitch Perfect” is kind of like taking “Glee” and putting it into a college environment, but is more like mixing the popularity of “Bridesmaids”-styled humour and the popularity of a cappella singing. The Barden Bellas are a struggling all-girl singing group trying to succeed with female pop songs from yester-year and showing off their bikini bodies, but after an on-stage meltdown, the team is left with two high-strung seniors and is forced to rebuild. Beca (Anna Kendrick) is an aspiring DJ with no interest in campus life, but after a deal made with her father (a small but good role by John Benjamin Hickey), Beca considers joining the Bellas. Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), who calls herself Fat Amy so twig bitches like the Bella leaders don’t call her that behind her back, is not what Aubrey (Anna Camp) and Chloe (Brittany Snow) have in mind to rebuild the group, but she can match pitch perfectly. What makes “Pitch Perfect” a good movie is the supporting characters. Fat Amy is a fully-realized character where everything she does and everything she says matches what we have come to know about her. Stacie (Alexis Knapp) and Cynthia Rose (Ester Dean) have even less screen time, but are almost just as complete of characters. Amy, in particular, is hilarious and provides all of the humour in the movie. The lead characters aren’t nearly as well thought-out. Aubrey is a screeching, high-maintenance control freak, one-dimensionally so, and her few moments of humour are very low quality and very poorly realized (her aforementioned on-stage meltdown is almost laughably bad it’s so poorly edited). Chloe, unfortunately, has a very simplistic role as Aubrey’s only sidekick who also shares Beca’s vision. Snow is a better actress than that. As the Bellas are trying to find their groove as the competition regionals and finals approach, Beca has met a boy who belongs to their all-male rivals. Jesse (Skylar Astin) is cute and extremely likable (an actually very impressive feat considering he got in over his quirky but cute roommate). Jesse aspires to create movie scores (yet another excellent character trait), and through his friendship with Beca, hopes to introduce her to some of the classics. All movies, as Beca complains, are predictable. You know that the boy is going to get the girl and you know what is going to happen before it happens. Jesse says that doesn’t matter because the perfect music can still move you to tears. His prime example is “The Breakfast Club”. Of course “Pitch Perfect” was predictable, and while that might drag during some of their early competition performances, the predictability works for the type of movie it is. Sometimes the comedic dialogue went too far for a joke, other times the humour was just a cheap gag, but overall it was still funny. With better, more original comedy it could have been a very good movie. Beca and Jesse made a great on-screen couple and had the audience cheering them on. In fact, “Pitch Perfect” works very well as a romantic comedy with a non-romantic primary storyline.

With 2009’s “Coraline” and now “ParaNorman,” the artists at LAIKA, Inc. have asserted themselves as some of the best minds in contemporary animation. While not as cerebral as Pixar’s best works, LAIKA’s two features achieve the same great feat that the productions of that preeminent studio are known for: transcending the “family film” mold by actively appealing to every member of the family, rather than just the children. Like “Coraline,” “ParaNorman” is tonally darker than the average animated feature–complete with real-world bullying and foreboding supernatural creatures like ghosts, zombies, and a witch–but its ample comedic relief and spirited action sequences ensure that the movie never descends to the macabre depths of its Henry Selick-helmed predecessor. The eponymous protagonist (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), has a peculiar gift: he can interact with ghosts. This behavior relegates Norman to outcast status at school, where he is picked on by meanie Alvin (Christopher Mintz Plasse), and troubles his parents (Jeff Garlin and Leslie Mann), though they dismiss his living room conversations with his deceased grandma (Elaine Stritch) as a phase rather than a reason for psychiatric evaluation. Norman’s paranormal sensitivity comes in handy when a centuries-old curse cast upon his town by a witch (Jodelle Ferland) comes to fruition, causing a pack of zombies to roam the streets. Given his prior experience with the dead and intimate knowledge of the curse, thanks to interactions with a local eccentric (John Goodman) who had been warding it off for years, Norman is the only one who can save his fellow citizens from havoc. LAIKA once again uses stop-motion animation to gorgeous effect, with bold colors and immaculate character design (Norman’s only friend, the pudgy Neil, is a real treasure). The studio’s visuals have become even more cinematic since “Coraline,” thanks to directors Chris Butler and Sam Fell’s adoption of the ‘Scope aspect ratio to allow for more complex compositions and efforts to minimize the drawbacks of stop-motion (particularly strobing). Even the 3-D effects are bright and pleasant, if unnecessary. “ParaNorman” is every bit as visually accomplished as the more technically complex computer animated films from Pixar and DreamWorks. But for as beautiful as “ParaNorman” is on the surface, it wouldn’t be the film that it is without its lovable cast of characters. Inhabiting a relatively straightforward (albeit well-told) story, they make the proceedings feel fresh every step of the way. Norman is a spunky and sympathetic protagonist, but the supporting characters are even more appealing. Norman’s Barbie-doll of an older sister and Neil’s jock of an older-brother, voiced by Anna Kendrick and Casey Affleck, respectively, are particularly funny — stereotypes at first glance, but revealing of many uniquenesses as they become involved in the action plot. An hysterically delivered last-minute revelation about Affleck’s character is truly ballsy and will undoubtedly alienate socially conservative parents. Apart from the richly spun personalities, there are comedic references aplenty for adult viewers to chew on while their younger counterparts sit back and enjoy the simple mechanizations of the story. Horror fans will be in heaven, as there are numerous sight gags that allude to late-‘70s and early-‘80s genre staples like “Halloween,” “Friday the 13th,” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” There are also more general quips that tackle subjects like Irritable Bowel Syndrome and adult video stores, which will hopefully fly right over kids’ heads. “ParaNorman” may prove too frightening for children under age 8 or 9–after all, it’s essentially a zombie movie, albeit a toned-down one–but it is otherwise a perfect selection for audiences of any age. The film is never groundbreaking, but it achieves what it sets out to do with sharp storytelling and eye-popping visuals. My only complaint is that it should have been released in October, when it would have functioned as a perfect warm-up for Halloween. Alas, viewers will just have to get in a spooky mood two months early, because “ParaNorman” is not to be missed.

Description

What a wonderful movie! Because you can read the summary, I will just tell you our reaction to it. We were lucky enough to receive tickets to a pre-release screening of this moving. We took the whole family, 5 boys ages 5-16, and my husband and myself. Everyone loved it. Even the 5 year old, and that is no small thing. This movie will make you laugh and cry and then laugh again. And the laughing moments range from chuckles to totally surprise you as they burst out of your chest howls out loud. Though we have our boys, we are waiting to adopt a girl, so the theme of parents who want a child that they can’t seem to have, and the theme of taking in a child that you didn’t give birth to and/or adoption really hit home for us. I sat at the end of the movie and cried, and they were tears of laughter and sadness and hope all mixed up together. Even if you’re not interested in adoption, this is really a touching show. I wish Disney made more movies like this. Totally clean, nothing even remotely possibly offensive, and yet it wasn’t just a kid show. It was interesting, engaging, witty. As noted above – good for everyone from ages 5 to 40!
