If you go into this movie as a fan of Katy Perry, you’ll love it. If you don’t like her at all, you won’t like the movie. Plain and simple. As a fan of Katy Perry, I juggled with the idea of actually paying money to see this in the theater because I wouldn’t say I’m a hardcore fan. But I decided I would go to experience the 3D effects. The 3D did not disappoint. It added a dimension to some of the concert scenes making the atmosphere fun and bubbly. The concert scenes were mixed in with behind the scenes looks at what goes into being Katy Perry. Now if you are not a huge fan of her, you probably won’t want to see the movie. It does give a really personal and at times, tragic, look into super stardom. And at the end of the movie you might find yourself liking Katy more. Overall, it really is a film for fans. Nothing more, nothing less.

Fun Romp with Adorable Star in Disneynature’s ‘Chimpanzee’ It’s unanimous. All three of our KIDS FIRST! youth film critics who reviewed Disneynature’s documentary Chimpanzee (below) loved the film – and the chimps it depicts. Talia Rashba says, “If you aren’t a fan of chimpanzees now, then this film will make you love them!” Brianna Beaton (12) calls the film “amazing” and “heartwarming” as she shares, “I absolutely love how it captures the bond between a loving mother (Isha) and her adorable young son (Oscar).” Morgan Bertsch (7) says, “Chimpanzees are much smarter than I ever thought.” And it’s spiced with humor, thanks to narrator Tim Allen. Chimpanzee by Talia Rashba http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zAc4kmGmGY This is the best nature movie ever! I had a wild adventure in the beautiful African rain forest, watching a group of chimpanzees live their lives. This movie has no human characters — the real stars of the movie are actual chimps that live in the rain forest off the coast of West Africa. This film is a documentary, the story is very real. We meet a little chimp named Oscar, and his mom Isha, who live in the forest with a group of several other chimps. We see their everyday life and how they interact with each other. When they get attacked by a group of rival chimps, Oscar is left all alone until someone comes to help him. Oscar is a fun, playful and adorable little chimp who always stays by his mother’s side. When you first look at little Oscar, you will instantly fall in love with him. He sometimes gets confused, especially when he is searching for food. This makes for some very laughable moments. Isha, Oscar’s mother, is a very loving and protective parent who will do anything to keep her son safe. Freddie is the leader of the troop and is very dependable and strong. He protects and guards the group and he knows how to do everything that they need. Chimpanzee is narrated by actor Tim Allen. You might recognize him as the voice of Buzz Lightyear from all three Toy Story movies. He definitely adds a lot of humor to the film and he helps explain a lot of what is happening with the animals. There are SO MANY amazing parts to this movie. The rain forest is absolutely gorgeous, and the way they get close-ups of tiny creatures and plants is outstanding. Just the way they capture raindrops falling onto a leaf or a mushroom blew my mind. The directors of this movie are the same ones who made the award-winning film Earth, and I think they did an excellent job with this movie as well. If you aren’t a fan of chimpanzees now, then this film will make you love them! You will see just how smart they are and how much they are really like us. I give it 5 out of 5 stars! Chimpanzee by Brianna Beaton http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkSbH-wBh6g This is a very heartwarming and lovable film. I absolutely love how it captures the bond between a loving mother (Isha) and her adorable young son (Oscar). Tim Allen narrates this amazing, heartwarming film, and boy is he doing it well! I like how he uses humor and is really describing the chimpanzees’ actions. My favorite scene is when Oscar is trying to open a nut with several tree limbs that fail, but then, after much determination, he realizes that the rock is the right tool to use to crack it open. Chimpanzee is a documentary set in the deep forests of Africa. It tells the story of Oscar, a young and playful chimpanzee that has a good life with his friends and family. Oscar is curious and wants to learn everything he can. But when separated from his mother Isha, during a fight for territory between their group and a rival group, the learning stops and he has to look out for himself. When everyone else he knows is rejecting him, the one person that you would never expect to take him in does — and changes his life forever. Alastair Fothergill (African Cats, Earth) and Mark Linfield (Earth) share in directing this nature film. It gives you an up-close experience of what the chimpanzee life is all about. During this film, you will see that chimpanzees have needs and feelings just like humans do. Chimpanzee is great for ages 7 and up. During the battle seen, it may be a little too much for younger ages. I give this film 5 out of 5 stars because of all the touching scenes between Oscar and his fellow chimpanzees. It left me wanting to know more about Oscar. Chimpanzee Reviewed by Morgan Bertsch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwJvMpv0vW0 The most amazing thing about Chimpanzee, for me, was the views from the top to the bottom of the rain forest. You get to see clouds, amazing water falls, plants and flowers that take weeks to grow that bloom in seconds. I loved the glowing mushrooms scene. Probably one of the coolest scenes I’ve ever seen. The cinematography is breathtaking. Now for Oscar’s story. Little Oscar is orphaned after a territorial war with another band of chimpanzees lead by Scar. That was really scary because baby chimps cannot survive without the care of their mothers, until the age of seven. Chimpanzees are much smarter than I ever thought. They have to learn how to use tools to gather food. They use sticks to gather ants and bugs and rocks to crush open nuts. It takes years for the mothers to pass along this information to their babies. What will Oscar do since he can’t feed himself of even know what to eat? Playing with honey bees is not the best choice for one as little as Oscar. I give it 5 tinkling stars.

Making up for its 40-minute run time in turgidity and sheer size, To the Arctic, whose 70mm IMAX presentation stretches postcard hokum to JumboTron size, is a travelogue doubling as an eco guilt-trip. Director Greg MacGillivray (Everest) buries the viewer in an avalanche of helicopter-view majesty, while narrator Meryl Streep petitions for the preservation of the receding North Pole ice and anthropomorphizes the animal stars in a fashion associated with Morgan Freeman. The cast of To the Arctic are the region’s walruses, migratory caribou, and, most of all, the polar bears—particularly mama bears and cubs, for the film is a paean to maternal resilience and fortitude in these times of thinning sea ice and scarce seal meat. (In order to preserve its sentimental view of the natural order, G-rated To the Arctic is tactful about the reality of carnivorous existence—we must infer that mama seals do not love their children as much as mama polar bears do.) The fatal cloying is abetted by Steve Wood’s soundtrack compositions and selections from Sir Paul McCartney’s catalog, a combination syrupy enough to glue one’s feet to the theater floor. Arguably a good lesson for kids about preserving our environment, To the Arctic is definitely a threat to our equally endangered good taste.

Until I saw “Marley” at the Sonoma International Film Festival last weekend, I knew little about the reggae star but liked a lot of his music. Director Kevin MacDonald was nominated for an Oscar for “The Last King of Scotland,” the excellent film about Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. MacDonald won an Oscar for the documentary “One Day in September.” He has directed a number of fine films, but none any finer than this gem. This is an excellent biography of a musical genius, who died very young. While he lived, he was a force of nature. What is particularly delicious about this film is the sound. There is a lot of music throughout, much of it in the background, but in the foreground are the people who knew and played with Bob Marley. The Jamaican language makes the film very compelling. There are sub-titles which translate English into English. The language adds so much to understanding why Reggae is what it is. This is a fine film, an artistic achievement and a fitting tribute to a great musician. See it, if you have even a passing interest in reggae or Bob Marley.

I watched Unraveled at the Los Angeles Film Festival 2011 and thought it was a great doc. They managed to capture a unique portrait of Marc Drier’s story because you watch the failed attorney turned crook sitting in his lavish 10 million dollar NYC penthouse as he is waiting to be sent to prison for a very long time. It was interesting to see how glamorous his apartment and possessions were at one point in time and then the end result of barren walls and packaged boxes. I watch American Greed and that type of show on a regular basis (which Drier was featured on) so this doc was on my must see list. The animations were well done and added a cool look to the movie. If you have a chance to see this I would definitely recommend…Overall a great doc with an interesting story. In December of 2008, within days of Bernie Madoff’s apprehension, New York attorney Marc Dreier was charged with eight counts of fraud and money laundering, bringing to light a scheme that had cheated lenders and clients of more than $700 million. Although a far cry from Madoff’s $65 billion swindle, Dreier still earned a place in the growing hall of corporate shame. He pleaded guilty to all charges and was put under house arrest for the 60 days until sentencing, which is where Marc H. Simon’s documentary comes in. The film bears witness to a tony purgatory in which a $10 million Manhattan penthouse becomes an anteroom to a prison cell, and a onetime celebrity lawyer putters around in an ankle monitor, chitchatting about baseball with the armed guards assigned to enforce his immobility. It’s a fascinating fishbowl in concept, yet Simon’s storytelling is unevenly textured and oddly listless—fatal for a film about a banal document-pushing felon clock-watching to a known outcome. In interviews, Dreier oscillates between confession and self-justification: forthright and contrite about his crimes, but also, skilled attorney that he is, determined to universalize them. “How many could say for sure that they would never do what I did, if they had the opportunity and thought they wouldn’t get caught?” he asks. Perhaps we’re all greedy, amoral bastards at heart, but it takes a special, truly privileged case to normalize white-collar psychosis. Ninety-nine percent of us wouldn’t know where to begin.

Description

Besides being a not so subtle nod to Star Wars, Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan’s Hope is a documentary told through the viewpoints of eight individuals as they descend into the madness that is the San Diego Comic Con. All of them have a purpose to be there, and all have a goal in mind, whether it is to sell a rare comic, win a masquerade or get signed on as an artist for a comic book company. Morgan Spurlock’s latest documentary was one of the late entries on my list of films to see at this year’s past Toronto International Film Festival, and one I have continued wrestling with over how I felt about it. Packed with dozens of hilarious interview clips with real and internet celebrities, along with actual footage from the floor, Spurlock valiantly tries to capture what it is like entering and navigating through the four day convention that becomes bigger with each passing year. He gets access to some behind the scenes material, and offers a fan’s eye view of some of the panels and events that had occurred at the 2010 event. But what holds the film back from being anything but a fun and amusing diversion for the geek and convention crowd, is the fact that it is a film lovingly made almost explicitly just for them. While the interviews are entertaining and downright hilarious, they do not provide any real insight or explanation for what fan culture is or why so many people go to Comic-Con year after year. Even the stories contained within the film do not answer why these people do what they do, simply that they go to obscene lengths to make sure they can pull off their goals. I assume Spurlock’s main goal was to tell multiple stories (more on that in a moment), but I cannot help but feel it hinders the film. It seems content at simply existing, as a memento for everyone who experiences this kind of subculture. Then that brings up another point – what is the ultimate goal here? I go to at least one major fan convention per year, so I have experienced the rush of seeing and meeting geek idols, witnessing the detail of some of the costumes, and talking shop with people just like the ones profiled here. But what about people venturing in with no real grasp on geek culture? What are they supposed to take from this? Are they even supposed to venture into this film? It seems a bit elitist in that respect, because there is nothing really to grasp if you do not already have some preconceived knowledge on the topic. In his previous films, Spurlock has tackled tough topics and asked some tough questions. While some segments and films work better than others (the less said about the borderline ridiculous Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?, the better), he still made a real attempt at getting the answers. Here, he just seems content without asking the bigger questions, and as a result, the film feels like a much weaker effort. While I do fault Spurlock’s lack of analysis here, I must praise the fact that outside of name credits, he does not appear in the film at all. He offers no narration whatsoever and does not appear on-screen at any time. He lets the people being profiled tell their stories, and lets the interviews help guide the film through its less-than-90-minute run time. It is a bit flabbergasting at first, considering how prolific and personal he has made his other documentary films, but I think it helps reflect his maturity both as a documentarian and filmmaker, and as a storyteller. It allows the film to become a more intimate film, and helps reinforce the notion that it is a film made as a kind of memento for the geeks. It is made up of their stories and quips, and Spurlock never interferes or redirects the film to follow him and his thoughts. It makes the film that much more different in that respect, and I think is the key reason why it works at all. Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan’s Hope was an interesting idea on paper, but I think in practice it comes off as more flawed than it should. While it is entertaining to watch the ups and downs of the people profiled within the film, I cannot help but feel underwhelmed by the general lack of analysis on Spurlock’s part. There have been documentaries before on specific fan cultures, but no real works centred around the mother of all conventions. There was plenty of material he could have mined and a wealth of individuals who could have given keen insight on the idea of fan and convention subculture. But in the end, it feels like a whole lot of ideas, and not a lot of actual follow through. As a love letter to the people that come out to San Diego once a year, it succeeds. But as a documentary on fan culture, it fails.

Description

Cannes favourite ‘Corman’s World’ is a heart-warming portrait of one of the true greats of American independent cinema, the champion of outlaws, freaks and fools and the master of the macabre. All the more touching as numerous interviews and testimonies paint a picture of a curious man indeed: not a dark twisted soul but a warm and genteel man with a wonderfully warped and fertile imagination. What’s more astonishing is the dazzlingly array of aspiring filmmakers and actors he mentored during the 60’s and 70’s. Reading like a Who’s Who’s of the golden age of the American auteur, Peter Bogdanovich, Peter Fonda, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard, Robert De Niro and David Carradine, amongst many others, all pay tribute here, including a tearful Jack Nicholson. Beginning in the 50’s as a story analyst at 20th Century Fox, Corman moved into writing, eventually selling scripts to fund his own productions for the burgeoning American Independent Pictures. His debut ‘Monster From the Ocean Floor’ in 1954 was the start of a prolific production output, with increasing forays into directing, notably ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ shot in only 2 days! Corman really made his mark in the 60’s. A series of classic Edgar Allan Poe adaptations featuring the splendidly cast Vincent Price define his legacy but the maverick Corman was often making use of down time and vacant sets to pursue other projects during this period. Most notable was the 1963 piece of Gothic absurd-ism, ‘The Terror’, using sets from ‘The Raven’. Proceeding with barely plot, nor script, a shoe string cast including Nicholson and an ageing Boris Karloff, the disparate visions of four different directors contributed to this chaotic opus, including a young Francis Ford Coppola and even Nicholson, who recalls this curious episode. The 60’s also saw critical acclaim for Corman, tackling themes such as racism in the segregated south in ‘The Intruder’ and counter culture movements in the ‘The Wild Angels’ and ‘The Trip’ but the 70’s heralded changes for Corman and he looks back on this era with a hint of melancholy. With the release of ‘Jaws’ and then ‘Star Wars’ the big studios finally caught up with the B’s. Schlock horror from the deep and invaders from space were now big budget and Corman was once more an outsider and destined for the straight-to-video market in the coming decade but before taking a back seat, Corman’s masterstroke was to spot the black comedy of the rubber shark and raise the stakes with ‘Piranha’ in 1978. The denouement sees Corman still active today, well into his eighties, on the set of the self-explanatory gore-fest ‘Dinoshark’. His output has barely abated since the 70’s but he takes an increasingly hands-off executive role these days. He remains ever philosophical, contented and visibly touched by the receipt of an honorary Academy Award in 2009. His calm and collected bizarre genius is deeply uplifting and I’d recommend anyone take a trip into Corman’s World.

Description

The issue of capital punishment has always been a hot topic of debate. Should someone die for the crimes they have committed? What if the crime was taking the life of another? Who has the right to judge who lives and who dies? Depending on whom you ask, the answers will vary drastically. Even I find myself wavering on which side of the fence I stand. It is one thing for me to say I am against capital punishment, which I am, but I honestly do not know how I would feel if I was in the same situation as the victim’s family. In his latest documentary, Into the Abyss, director Werner Herzog is clear on his stance against capital punishment. Herzog even goes as far as telling his interview subject Michael Perry, a convict schedule to die within 8 days, that he does not have to like him but respects his right to live as a human being. Into the Abyss pieces together the events of a triple homicide that took place in Conroe, Texas ten years ago. Despite each proclaiming their innocence, Perry and his friend Jason Burkett where convicted. Burkett only got a life sentence, for the senseless murders that resulted from a botched car theft scheme. Herzog does not question whether or not Perry and Burkett are innocent, as he can only present the facts that are documented by the police. The versions of the events that both Perry and Burkett recount are vastly different from each other. The only commonality being that each man places the blame on the other for the crime. The fact that both men were in their teens at the time makes their crimes even more disturbing. Herzog skilfully uses testimony from Perry and Burkett, as well as those who knew them in the community, to show how poverty and a recurring cycle of drug abuse and violence inevitably lead the men to their current place. Into the Abyss does not only focus on the crimes that people commit, but also those affected as result of it. This includes everyone from the families of the victims, the preacher who prays with the death row inmates in their final moments, and even the prison guards responsible for strapping the men like Perry onto the tables where the lethal injection will take place. The fascinating thing about Herzog’s conversations with these individuals is how each person, especially the victim’s families, are deeply scarred in some form or another yet still believe that life is not something the legal system should be taking away from people. In one powerful moment a prison guard ask the question “how are you going to live your dash?” He is referring to the dash that appears on tombstones in between the date of birth and the date of death. That dash represents our entire lives and the choices we make within it. Despite the heavy subject matter, and being far more restraint than in previous films, Werner Herzog still manages to inject the film with moments of genuine humour. Whether it is discussions on squirrels, conspiracies surrounding how Burkett’s wife got pregnant despite never consummating the marriage, or tattooing the name of a girlfriend on an arm, there are plenty of lighter moments that help Herzog to reaffirm how life, even in its simplest moments, is wonderful. Into the Abyss may feature a more subdued Herzog, but it is still a documentary that should not be missed.

I was privileged to see the film at Sundance and was not disappointed. The heartfelt story made me love Elmo even more, who thought that was possible? I will admit that there seemed to be a bit of a downfall missing. The guy is very likable but I could sense a missing piece. The film touches upon Clash’s relationship with his daughter and the strains they endured due to Clash’s work-a-holic lifestyle. Yet, the resolution quite wasn’t there for me. All things were patched up with a Sweet 16 birthday bash for her. With that said, it doesn’t ruin the film and merely left me curious. The history of Elmo and Clash’s relationship with Jim Henson was pure magic. The behind the scenes look at the world of muppeteers truly fascinated me. I encourage you to check out the film for yourself.

Nick did a great job with this movie. I have been waiting for it to come out ever since I heard about the controversy he was causing in Alaska when he rented the house near Sarah’s. I enjoyed the interviews with people who know her, and who have dealt with her in the past. It is really sad that Sarah decided not to appear in the movie, taking part in an interview where she could attempt to clear her name. Nick does do the honorable thing and at least allows her the opportunity to do so, but alas to no avail. With a book coming out on the same topic it kind of makes you wonder perhaps Nick was too easy on her, because from the look of things dear old Sarah has a lot of skeletons in her closet. If she didn’t have a nervous breakdown after loosing the election, I am sure she is due to have one in the very near future. Great movie to see for those who want to get an inside glimpse at what makes the women or in this case the hockey mom. I would even recommend it for her supporters so at least if they go in with an open mind might learn something new about there fearless leader.

This is without a doubt one of the best films of the 2010 Seattle International Film Festival. I have never experienced such an intense range of emotions while watching a film as I experienced while watching this one. From nearly the moment it began, I could feel tears leaking from the corners of my eyes, coursing down my cheeks. Tears of pleasure. Tears of joy. Tears of awe. Tears of sadness and hope and inspiration and sheer delight. I have never been moved by a film as I was moved by this one. It documents the rise and fall of an infamous High School Stage Band and their reunion 30 years later to honor their teacher. But it is about so much more than just that. It is a film about the power of one man, one teacher, to touch the lives of his students in ways that go beyond measure. It is a film about standing up in the face of all odds and coming out on top. It is a film about breaking standards, beliefs, and the norm, a film about being the best that you are, putting your heart and soul into what you are doing, and the magic that that sort of energy and power creates. It is a film that is uplifting, inspiring, amazing, exciting, and joyous. It is a film filled with incredible music, incredible people, and more love, courage, and soul than I have ever experienced in my life… until now.

I have to admit I’m not what you will call a fanatical worshipper of Pearl Jam’s music enough to compel me to watch what would be THE documentary this season with a single session, simultaneous screening around the world where PJ fans will likely already have made a beeline for. Instead, I’m a bigger fan of writer-director Cameron Crowe than the subject matter of his documentary (ok, so this sounds a little bit blasphemous), given that it’s been years since we last saw a Cameron Crowe film hit the theatres, although that wait will soon be over by the end of this year with the release of We Bought a Zoo. Pearl Jam 20 chronicles the beginnings of the band back in the year 1989 where Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard came together after the demise of their band Mother Love Bone, and like all successful bands that came before it, was subjected to recruiting and changing of members until the perfect chemistry was achieved, culminating with frontman Eddie Vedder, with his distinct growling voice, joining the band, and together put alternative grunge music on the radar of music everywhere. Sure there were many others in the same vein since the 90s was the era where this sound had taken the world by storm, with what would possibly be the largest rivals to Nirvana before Kurt Cobain’s passing. You can probably read a lot more details on the band from its Wikipage, and Cameron Crowe’s film digs through large treasure troves of archival footage from television newsreels to more independent, off the cuff capture of the band’s early years, that we get to witness the second earliest band performance ever and plenty of other home made videos that expectedly get pixelated for the big screen. Crowe’s background as a music journalist being a tremendous factor in the crafting of this film, where in lesser hands would have been relegated to the standard talking heads interviews, and to stuff the film with chock full of music videos and live performances from the band’s tours around the world. Instead, Crowe provides the narration, and shares interesting nuggets of information through what would be a largely chronological format without overwhelmingly bombarding the audience with too much information. Being on close terms with all the band members and collaborators also allowed for unfettered access to more intimate and honest interview answers, with the utilizing of milestones in the band’s career to timestamp the feature, including their courtroom lawsuit with Ticketmaster. But with everything crammed into two hours, expect some areas of focus to be skimmed through as Crowe paced his documentary at breakneck speed to cover as much ground as possible, mixing it up quite a bit with comedy, pathos, and allowing the many visuals both moving and static to breathe and tell a story. It’s about the capture of a phase of growing up, where looking around I see folks around my age group (or older) who had grown with the band in the 90s when we were in our teens where music played a large part in our lives, as we shift through the sands of time with the identification of many songs from the band’s discography, where I didn’t even realize that Daughter was supposed to be called Brother initially, and listening to Vedder actually sing it that way during a practice on the tour bus, is reason enough amongst others why fans just have to watch this, and perhaps reminisce the times where they had seen their idols perform on stage during one of the many concert tours done worldwide at the peak of their popularity. And that is if a theatrical release gets secured soon, which I suspect would be the case given the sold out, one off screening. Watch for it!

This era has since long legendary status, not just in American history, but all over the world. It seems like a saga now; this radicalism, this possibility of seeing even socialism as a possible alternative in the US. It was not just about race issues, it was also about the economic and political system. During these years, Swedish television many times went over to the States, interviewing black radical leaders. We meet Stokely Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver and in a very unique sequence also Angela Davis in prison. Most of it takes place after the backlash in the late 60s. The movement was deradicalised and we meet the fighters talking about big changes, but you have the feeling that they’ve lost most of their faith in it. It’s a big difference compared to the attitude of Stokely Carmichael during his Stockholm visit in 1967. Very interesting material, but you miss the analysis. Why was the movement deradicalised? It was not just because of police brutality during riots or supposed FBI actions. And you don’t get any explanation about why the movement and other powers had success when it came to reducing racism. There’s anyway another USA today, compared to what it was in 1967.

Our 14-year-old film critics, Gabriella Chu loved this movie. See her videotaped review here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3SfapHdSVQ Even if you are not familiar with Glee, you will enjoy this movie if you are into musicals or singing and dancing. The movie is a vivacious documentary recounting life-changing experiences from Gleeks combined with Glee cast performances. Watching the entire cast of Glee perform is very entertaining and the 3D effect makes the movie so vivid and life-like. I felt like I was there enjoying the concert! The movie is very high-spirited and gives off good vibes and delivers positive messages such as have self-confidence and it is okay to be different. I like how the movie goes behind the scenes of the Glee cast because Gleeks and the rest of the audience can identify themselves with the various personalities of the characters. The movie has several scenes where Gleeks are interviewed about who their favorite character is or tell experiences about how relating to a certain character on the show helped them pull through a tough time. I recommend this movie to children 7 and up. It does not have inappropriate language, sexual scenes, and is not complicated or difficult to understand for children since there is not much of a storyline. The movie is also rated PG. Glee: The 3D Concert Movie is a fun movie pick to see with friends, but is also an engaging family film connecting both parents and kids through music. The wait is finally over! This movie will be coming out in theaters August 12, 2011.

I had been a Fan of Ayrton when I was a child. I distinctly remember watching the F1 highlights with my dad. My dad was a seasonal fanatic of sports and kept updating me with the news from the papers/sports magazines and the television. To relive the moments of Ayrton (the idol) in this emotionally gripping documentary was unbelievably comforting. The script and flow of the events were so flawlessly presented taking one’s memory into the Time travel of decade gone by. It was nothing short of Excellence in execution. The documentary dissects Ayton’s persona in a subtle way, making it the most compelling Biography of all times. The back-ground score by Antonio Pinto was Enthralling and Sensual delight. This is not to be missed, sad that I had been to the cinema only on the final day when it was shown-much regret the delay. Nevertheless, Its a true Masterpiece which portrays the subtle sadness of a legend’s demise in a sweet throat stifling moments.

I only had 2 issues with the film as presented – 1) the film moves at a breakneck pace trying to cram what was likely hundreds of hours of film into 90 minutes; I wanted many scenes to last longer – 2) I would’ve liked a ‘where are they now’ sort of bookend for more of the pranksters (only Kesey’s and Cassady’s post-prankster lives are detailed). I thought the footage was gorgeous – the film must’ve been well taken care of over the years. It was really fascinating to see America circa 1964 in full color (most footage from that era is black & white). I want to re-read The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test after buying this DVD and refer back and forth. It really does breathe new life into Tom Wolfe’s book; although, the film stands on its own. One of the most fascinating segments of the film was early on when they delved into how Kesey was turned onto LSD. They describe the whole experience and provide audio recordings taken as Kesey was under the influence in a hospital where LSD experiments were being conducted. I understand many will take issue with the pro-drug message, but whether you like it or not, the subject of the film and the footage itself is a big part of history. There is something to learn and appreciate no matter where you stand.

Just saw this at a preview and its mind blowing. As you might expect from a Youtube content generated film, the clips and there are hundreds…are short, punchy and vary from fuzzy mobile footage, of a lonely girl talking at her phone, a guy asking a girl on a date, to timelapsed high definition clouds brewing into a dark thunderous storm, suns setting over Himalayan peak, and goats staring knowingly at me …more goats please! All walks of life, all parts of the world, everywhere on this little blue planet is the location, where shared themes common to all humanity are explored and humoured, exploited and tragically true of us all…there’s a lingering sadness which underlies the frequent fun and humour so many of these clips portray…us making the best of what we have, which for so many is nothing much at all, and yes there is darkness, a lot of it, but what we do, our nature is to laugh at it, and celebrate the victory of being alive. The resulting feature length montage is profound, emotional, hard to watch at times, and if you’re not empathising with the rest of the world and grateful of your shared humanity by the time the snail minds its own business…you ain’t’ go no soul, noooooo, none! Expect more of this, coz its all true, and just a glimpse of what the digital age can do.

Description

“Your horse is a mirror to your soul, and sometimes you may not like what you see. Sometimes, you will.” So says Buck Brannaman, a true American cowboy and sage on horseback who travels the country for nine grueling months a year helping horses with people problems. BUCK, a richly textured and visually stunning film, follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real-life “horse-whisperer”, he eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment. Buck possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses – and people – with his understanding, compassion and respect. In this film, the animal-human relationship becomes a metaphor for facing the daily challenges of life. A truly American story about an unsung hero, BUCK is about an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds.

Description

As a long time reader of the New York Times, I was delighted to see that Page One was showing at Austin’s SXSW Film Festival. Page One is a provocative film that explores the complexities of the new media landscape in which the New York Times now finds itself trying to compete and keep its head above water. It is one of the few films that I’ve seen that really provides the viewer with an inside look at how a major newspaper operates. While the film tends to be pro-New York Times by the very nature of the fact that it was made with their cooperation, it still comes off as fair portrait of America’s paper of record. The film focuses in on the media division and how the Times is coping with new challenges from Wikileaks, online news sources, web logs, news aggregating websites, twitter, etc. The film clearly shows why we still need the “so-called” old media to provide the investigative journalism that is hard to find elsewhere. Newspapers – and especially the elite newspapers – remain a crucial element in our political culture in that they provide a check against abuse of power by both government and corporations. The internet new media still relies on old media for its reporting and is not equipped to replace it. Clearly new models for cooperation between new and old are needed that will allow mainstream media to continue to profitable. The NY Times is proud, magisterial, occasionally arrogant, and absolutely necessary. Like any old institution, it will survive if it continues to change and evolve for new times and technologies. Page One is part of an on-going conversation that the United States is having about how media will evolve in the age of the Internet. It is useful film for engaging the broader public in the conversation.

Description

When it comes to nature documentaries Morgan Freeman is a great go-to-guy for the movie studios. He has a voice that can seem soothing and pleasant to just about anyone. Freeman narrates the latest IMAX 3D documentary “Born to be Wild” by David Lickley (who also directed “Bears” and “Jane Goodall’s Wild Chimpanzees”). For a short 40 minutes Freeman does a first-rate job stirring up many emotions in the viewer. Well, he doesn’t do it alone; he has some help from the adorableness of baby elephants and baby orangutans. Before this film I would not be able to locate Borneo on a map very easily. Thanks to the clever direction by Lickley we see an interactive map of both Borneo and Kenya where our story is about to begin. We are also introduced to two women who have dedicated their lives to rescuing and adopting elephants and orangutans who have been orphaned because of the actions of mankind. Daphne Sheldrick has set up an elephant sanctuary in Kenya; many of the elephants are there because poachers killed their parents (the release of this film could be really bad timing for the CEO of godaddy.com and his recent elephant hunting video). She raises the elephants with a team of zookeepers and is the only person to successfully raise an elephant from infant to adulthood. We then travel to Borneo to see Birute Galdikas’ sanctuary for orphaned orangutans. They have lost their homes and their parents due to man’s rapid expansion into their territory. In both cases we experience a cuteness factor that would overwhelm just about anyone with the warm fuzzies. We see the orangutans doing cute human-like behaviors such as drinking milk from soda bottles, bathing themselves and riding on the back of motorcycles. We also see the elephants drinking lots of milk from bottles, playing soccer and adapting to their human surroundings. In the end, the captured animals are released back into the wild where they belong. The journey back home is guided by humans, the same species that orphaned them in the first place. Should you see this movie? Yes, but only see it in the IMAX 3D format for its vibrant images of the animals and for some wonderful shots of both the African and Borneo landscapes. It’s a seemingly flat story with not too many ups and downs or much conflict. If it weren’t for the 3D this could have been a straight-to-DVD release. I do understand that Lickley wanted us to realize that there is a threat of extinction for both of these species. However, we are not given any action steps at the end. I would at least expect a website address to pop up telling the viewers that they can do more to help these orphans.

Just saw this at an advanced screening in Long Beach and I must say the Jackass crew is back. This movie is exactly what I was expecting it to be. My friends and I debated whether or not the guys were too old but apparently they were offered enough money to not care much. This is just like Jackass Number 2 in that they got a big budget to do the set piece stunts. There is still the low key, sneak up on people pranks, but now in glorious slow motion. The set piece stunts are in bright and crisp 3D that really adds to the effect of whatever they are trying to do. As others have stated the intro is pretty cool but I was actually left wanting just a bit more. Note the paintballs though, in amazing 3D. This is Johnny, Ryan Dunn, Steve-o, Pontius, and Weeman’s show. Dave and Aaron end up getting hurt as usual but are awesome sports. There are more gross out and insane, painful stunts than pranks on unwitting public people, but a few of the funniest skits fall into the latter category. The midget couple at the bar is the funniest in the movie by far. These guys are as funny as always and their genuine friendship is really quite nostalgic at the end. Its been nearly 10 years since Jackass went off the air and these guys are really still at the top of their game. The entire theater was crying with laughter the entire film. I was invited to stay after for a post film discussion and one of the other people summed it up nicely by saying he felt that not a single skit was a misfire. Matt Hoffman, Jeff Tremaine, and Spike Jonze were in the crowd. Of the 25 or so people that stayed after the film, 22 thought it was the best of the trilogy.

Employing 5 teams of directors (who did not collaborate per the producer’s q&a comments), the film adaptation of FREAKONOMICS is a hit-or-miss extravaganza, mostly missing the mark. Even fans of the popular book (and its followups) are unlikely to be stimulated. Superstar doc director Alex Gibney takes precedence here, and producer Chad Troutwine acknowledged at the post-screening q&a that his segment runs long for some audiences. I found his study of corruption in the ranks of Japan’s sumo wrestling rather uninteresting, and Gibney’s forced comparisons to the bad boys of Wall Street (Bernie Madoff, etc.) pointless and self-serving. Movie’s most controversial sequence has to be Eugene Jarecki’s elaboration of the book’s chapter on the causes of the lowered U.S. crime rate in recent decades. As an anti-Giuliani New Yorker I certainly ate up the red meat portion of the footage, indicating that our local self-appointed savior really had nothing to do with the dramatic lowering of the NYC homicide and violent crime rate since around 1989. However, author/economist Steven Levitt’s conclusion that, statistically, 50% of the reduction in crime in this country is attributable to Roe v. Wade making abortion legal and readily available to a whole generation beginning in the ’70s (causing there to be fewer unwanted kids in existence who might have grown up to become serious criminals 16 to 20 years after) spurious and more a case of grandstanding that solid science. Sure, he controlled for all the relevant variables (areas of the country that had already legalized abortion prior to 1973 vs. the rest of the nation, etc.), but I don’t buy it. And worse yet, where does it lead us -to endorse eugenics next? That segment exemplifies my basic problem with FREAKONOMICS, the publishing phenomenon and now the movie: trying to analyze complex issues from an economic standpoint is simply not applicable to all situations, unless you force it. It is just Levitt applying his expertise willy-nilly in what I take to be self-aggrandizement, and obviously millions of people are taken in by his con. Watching the film I became painfully aware of his heavy emphasis, almost ad nauseum, on the concept of “incentives”, which he clearly believes professionally to be a basic way of explaining human behavior. Repeated over & over, the shallowness of this approach becomes quite evident. There is a very cute segment by Morgan (SUPERSIZE ME) Spurlock on naming children, emphasizing issues with the prevalence of unique (even Uneek as a choice) names within the Black community, but this is also one of the dumber segments by the time all the theories have been trotted out and lampooned. The femme directors Grady & Ewing take on use of cash incentives (there’s that word again) to attempt to approve grades and achievement of Chicago Heights ninth graders, but that part of the film struck me as pretty phony, even including a fantasy sequence, though the main protagonist named Urail (another unique name victim) is a winning screen presence. Seth Gordon, who interviewed Levitt and his co-author, journalist Stephen Dubner at length, comes off best in this documentary since he does only the intros & interstitial segments. Overall, as one naysayer at the q&a perceptively noted, the film is mainly old-hat.

Description

The Tillman Story – For a documentary this was a captivating film. It tells the story of professional NFL player Pat Tillman who left behind a Multi Million Dollar contract to join with his brother Kevin to enlist in the US Army’s Rangers. Directed by Amir Bar-Lev it tells the story of a mission in Afghanistan when Tillman was shot in the head. The Military and US government initially said that Tillman was killed in heroic fashion in a firefight with the Taliban members of his platoon were given orders not to reveal what happen even to his brother Kevin who was at the tail end of the convoy. But little by little with lots of questions by his family especially his mom the truth finally came out as to what happen. Although evidence of who knew and how far the cover-up appears to have went all the way to The Bush White House only one 3 Star General was made a scapegoat . Pat knowing that because he was a high profile name that the military would want to use as a recruiting tool if something ever were to happen left written instructions that he did not want a military funeral. The military tried to push the family into signing onto one they refused and he did not have one. It is amazing to think that the US government and military would go to this length to cover-up a friendly fire incident but the United States government like all the worlds government’s is Corrupt and there call for patriotism is as corrupt. I believe before any country commits to a war it should be required to read THE WAR PRAYER by Mark Twain (Look it up really read it). Pat was not religious he was a atheist at his funeral service his brother Rich said ” Pat isn’t with God he’s F*****g Dead He wasn’t religious but thank you for thoughts but he’s F*****g Dead” Go see this Film
