Description

Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” is fairly accurate to the classic novel and keeps most of its themes intact. However, Luhrmann’s own flair adds a new dimension to the story. Visually this film is incredibly stunning. From grand sets to the detailed period dresses, this film is a treat for the eyes. Never once does it not take your breath away from its impressive scenery. Many people might be worried about the updated music, but there is nothing to fear. Jay-Z’s track works incredible well with the film and complements the era in which it is set. The direction in this film is impeccable. The cinematography is marvelous and really lets the viewer absorb the sheer artistry that has gone into making this film. Luhrmann keeps a high level of energy throughout the film and the party sequences are choreographed and edited in a way that it makes you feel envious of not being apart of it. Editing in the film is seamless and really keeps the viewer engaged. A common criticism the film receives is that it is more style than substance, however, I must disagree. This modern interpretation doesn’t forget its themes and morals from the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald tale. Performances are phenomenal by the entire cast. Carey Mulligan’s Daisy is every bit as careless as one would expect, but she also manages to show some complexity in her role. Tobey Maguire is a great avatar for us to take on as we enter this film. He is very much the viewer as he sees everything happening, but is ultimately helpless to change anything. The true standouts in the film are Joel Edgerton and Leonardo DiCaprio. Edgerton as Tom Buchanan brings a lot of personality to his character that I thought was absent in the book. He’s a bit more tender and more vulnerable, especially when he finds out his wife’s secret. The true award recognition worthy performance comes from DiCaprio’s Gatsby. He hones on being a respectable, but idealistically insane man. His performance is not only compelling, but also charming and quit hopeful. He truly deserves some recognition come Oscar season. Overall, “The Great Gatsby” is a fantastically entertaining and enthralling film. It is horribly underrated as it is filled with awards worthy visuals, sets, costumes, direction, and performances. It is a great time at the movies for anyone that enjoys the classic novel or who haven’t even heard of it. Not only is this film dramatically satisfying, but also quite humorous and a spectacle like no other. I give it 4.5/5, a great adaptation of one of the greatest novels ever written.

Although better than “Take Shelter”, “Mud” is still not as good, as deep or as entertaining as writer/director Jeff Nichols thinks that it is. Starring Matthew McConaughey in supposedly the best performance to come out of the McCona-sance, Nichols’ slightly misogynistic plot tells the story of two boys who decide to explore an island on the Mississippi River, after one claims to have discovered a mysterious boat suspended in the trees. Once on the island they run into a man who goes by the name of Mud; a filthy, starving and very mysterious fugitive, who seems to be living on the boat. Mud elicits the boys help, in exchange for the aforementioned boat. Now, while that sounds like an interesting story, after a while the true themes of “Mud” emerge, when the film begins to play out more so as a multi-generational tale of men who fall in love with women, who prove to be their downfall. There is a ton of sub-textual “stuff” going on here, dealing with boats as a metaphor for a man’s self worth and multiple parallels concerning father and son relationships. And though sub-textual “stuff” is essentially what allows for the best films, due to Nichols’ script, “Mud” comes off as more ambiguously underdeveloped than anything. And thus, its own emotional themes concerning coming of age and father and son relationships become muddled, getting lost in the lack of an intriguing story which becomes sadly less and less powerful as it progresses. And therein lies the problem with “Mud”. Its foundation was constructed by a writer/director who has a nasty habit of being far too cryptic of a filmmaker for his own good. That said, Nichols does display a slathering of beautifully constructed visuals and a few inspired lines of dialogue (mostly muttered by the profoundly underutilized Michael Shannon). And there are definitely bits and pieces of this movie, in conjunction with standout performances from both McConaughey and Tye Sheridan, who played the main child protagonist here (and reminded me of River Phoenix in “Stand by Me”) that will have audiences sitting forward and taking notice. Side Note: Reese Witherspoon is also in this movie, but doesn’t really do much of anything. So, she’s really not worth talking about. Final Thought: If there is one positive thing I could say about Nichols as an up and coming writer/director, it would be that he does tend to bring out stellar performances from his stable of actors. And “Mud” is the type of film which moves forward on the backs of performances, not necessarily on plot. So, despite the predictable narrative, there is enough good here (especially in the final act) to slightly recommend this film. In fact, I think I would be hard pressed to find anybody who could outright hate “Mud”. But I am still shocked at the hordes of critics who tout this as a “must see” or even award worthy.

Description

The historical sports drama, 42, transports the viewer back in time to a different America: An America where discrimination is an accepted fact of life; an America where blacks and whites in the South are forced to use separate bathrooms; an America where a baseball manager could be suspended for sleeping with a Hollywood starlet; an America where 96 wins isn’t enough to get a team into the MLB postseason (!). It’s the age of Jackie Robinson – the man who changed America’s Pastime and changed American attitudes about race. Harrison Ford plays Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers’ General Manager who made the bold decision to bring an African American into the Major Leagues in 1947. Ford is tremendous. It’s a rare treat to watch one of Hollywood’s most famous leading men disappear into a character. At first, it seems odd to see Ford playing an old curmudgeon. But then one comes to the astonishing realization that Ford (at age 70) is actually a few years older than Rickey was when he brought Robinson to Brooklyn. In the movie, Rickey professes that his motives are financial – the Dodgers have lots of African American fans that would pay to see Robinson play. He claims the only color he cares about is green. Ford’s commanding and ultimately moving portrayal, however, hints at more decent and high-minded desires driving Rickey’s decision. The Academy might as well start engraving Ford’s name onto the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. This is his finest performance since The Mosquito Coast. Little-known actor Chadwick Boseman brings all the necessary elements to the role of Robinson. He looks like a ballplayer and is totally convincing in the baseball scenes. But he also effectively conveys the emotional turmoil inside a man forced to endure racially charged taunts and other various indignities due to the color of his skin. He shows the grace and class with which Robinson handled the onslaught. It took true courage to not fight back. It showed true character to turn the other cheek. One wonders what would have happened had Robinson not taken the high road – or hadn’t been such a remarkable ballplayer. Jackie Robinson’s success was an important step toward racial equality in the U.S. How much slower would progress have been if he hadn’t come along? The rest of the cast consists mainly of TV actors, most notably Christopher Meloni as Leo Durocher, the fiery manager who quashes his players’ objections to Robinson’s inclusion on the team. The actors mostly look like athletes (1940s athletes anyway) and baseball action has a more realistic look and feel than most baseball films. Computer graphics are also effectively used to recreate long-since-demolished ballparks like Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds in exact detail. The script by writer/director Brian Helgeland is straightforward, but unlike most sports movies, there’s no “big game” at the end. Real life provided no such drama (the 1947 Dodgers lost the Fall Classic to the Yankees). So, Helgeland manufactures a climax by staging a fourth inning at-bat in a mid-September game as if it’s the seventh game of the World Series. It’s a bit of a cheat, but it works. Helgeland avoids sanitizing the racial vitriol hurled at Robinson. He plainly shows the ignorance and prejudice that was openly expressed – most infamously by Phillies’ manager Ben Chapman. (Philadelphia fans won’t find much to be proud of in the movie. Going in, I knew the ugly part the City of Brotherly Love played in Robinson’s story, but that doesn’t make it any easier to watch. The Phillies were the last National League team to integrate – this movie shows why that was likely the case.) At the same time, the filmmakers present a movie that most families will still find acceptable for young fans that don’t know Robinson’s story or his significance in American history. You hear lots of n-words, but not nearly as many as your average Tarantino film. And each character that uses them is sternly chastised on screen. (Aside from those scattered slurs, there isn’t much that most parents would find objectionable.)

Description

Trance is directed by Danny Boyle and adapted to screenplay by John Hodge from Joe Ahearne’s film of the same name from 2001. It stars James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson. Music is scored by Rick Smith and cinematography is by Anthony Dod Mantle. Art auctioneer worker Simon (McAvoy) does the double-cross on Franck (Cassel), his partner in an art heist, but after taking a blow to the head suffers amnesia and can’t recall where he has hidden a stolen Goya masterpiece. Franck and his thug side-kicks decide to send Simon to hypnotherapist Elizabeth (Dawson) in the hope of unlocking the painting’s hiding place. However, once the therapy starts, secrets come tumbling out and nothing is ever as it at first seems. Already this early in the day after the film’s release, we know for certain that Danny Boyle’s foray into neo-noir is going to split his fan base considerably. Admired for his ability to turn his hand at any genre he fancies, Boyle reaches back to his earlier movies and comes up with a mind bending neo-noir that crackles with the kind of sexual edginess that Paul Verhoeven thrived upon. It sounds snobbish I know, and I have been called a neo-noir snob recently, but if all things noir are not your thing then this really is a film you should stay away from. Think Basic Instinct meets Inception and they take out a 40s Heist movie for drinks and you get an idea where we are at with Trance. All the hallmarks of noir, both neo and conventional classics, are evident here, from characterisations to visual smarts, it’s a noir head’s dream and very much a must see on the big screen or on Blu-ray formats. Forget any notion of having someone to root for in this, there is scarcely a decent human bone on show. Characters are either fuelled by greed, lust, jealousy or vengeance, or quite simply just not smart enough to operate in the circles they move in. Amnesia is a key component of the story, something which again features a lot in olde noir, as does the central character being a complete dupe…To expand upon more would be stupid of me, the less you know the better it actually is upon first viewing. It really is a difficult film to discuss without delving into why it is such a trippy and deliciously cheeky piece of film. That’s not to say that narratively it’s smarter than a brain pie, because that’s not the case. For as the threads untangle, several times, the mind meld aspect will fall apart if plot dissection is your thing? Also cramming so much “brain food” into the last quarter of film kind of feels like too much, overkill if you will. While Franck’s side-kick bad boys are irritatingly disposable. Yet it’s a film that begs to be seen more than once, twice, thrice even… Visually it’s superlative, it’s clear that Boyle and Mantle know and admire noir’s visual splendours, with an awareness of atmospheric importance (noir is an atmosphere, not a genre. There’s the snob in me again!) pulsing throughout. Set in London but filmed out of Dungeness in Kent, the backdrop is a city of steel and mirrors, a thriving city of wealth and mistrust. The tricks of the trade are here but never once is it style over substance, the visual ticks matter to the narrative. Night time overhead shots of a bustling city come and go, different colour tones for different character’s apartments are clever, oblique camera angles ensure distortion of frame is equal to distortion of antagonists/protagonists minds (whose trance is this, really?…). Smudgey silhouettes through bronze glass, outrageous POV shots and caressing camera shots of the human form, no shot is wasted in the name of adding detail. Rest assured, Boyle brings his “A” game here. All of which is covered over by Smith’s slow rumbling score that acts as a foreboding observer ready to unleash itself when the carnage begins. The three principal actors come out firing and clearly are enjoying themselves. McAvoy cements his “A” list credentials with a multi layered performance, Cassel is as usual a mighty presence and Dawson, in a bold role, does her best work so far and hints she’s ready to move into the big league. While it has to be noted that all three actors have to play their cards very close to their chests throughout; and do so admirably. Boyle’s action construction is kinetic, with the pre-credits sequence one of the best opening sequences lately, and Hodge’s script has a playfulness about it that ensures those paying attention know the film is self-mocking and not taking itself half as seriously as some film fans seem to think. An audience splitter it is sure to be, but for those with a bent for noirish sexy mind bending heist capers? Get in there! 9/10

Idk what other people are talking about when it comes too this movie, they obviously don’t get the “game” most people play. It’s all about a game of chess…. I am not a big fan of Tyler perry movies but this movie was definitely amazing and it is a tad similar too why did I get married (1-2). I like this movie because whether you are a girl or a guy, when a person cheats, they always seem too compare the two. In this case, Juidth who is the main character is married too Brice which they have known each other since age 6. Judith grew up as a Christian, her mom is extremely religious and Brice is the only man Judith has been with or has slept with. Harley comes along who is a “multimillionaire” and plays the game very very well with Judith. Throughout the entire movie Harley plays mind tricks with Judith, and plays it extremely well, he knows when too anchor her, for example, he didn’t know that her husband forgot her birthday when Harley bought Judith flowers but it worked in his favor. He knows when too say the right things at the right time and he enjoyed when she’ll get mad because he knows he has her under his wing. The only thing I disliked, was that Judiths mother was SO religious and overly acted at times but I did like when she will tell Judith things like “it’s okay too love money as long as the money doesn’t control you” or “that man is going too take you straight too hell”, and it was also dramatic that Judith when she was turning evil she will laugh sinisterly or the way she looked and acted, but overall Tyler was showing that Judith was becoming evil. I liked this movie a lot because the games that Harley played again was like a game of chess. He was playing chess while Judith was stuck on checkers. Judith was more naive and weak in a sense since she’s not really experienced and Harley was a very good player who knew how to play the game and of course he was CRAZY and people that were like his character, is attracted too people like Brandys character or Judith because they are weak and easily manipulated. But overall, Judith basically went “to hell and back” in order to get her life together, she messed up along the way with coke and Harley and messing up her marriage but her dream about opening up a place for her marriage counseling etc came true. Definitely worth watching!!!

Ambition should never be ignored, especially in the realm of cinema where choreographed visuals, intense dramatization, and thematic contemplations can all play a part in transforming entertainment into genuine art. One of these aspiring cinematic poets is the late bloomer Derek Cianfrance who astonished audiences with his grittily authentic relationship drama Blue Valentine, an endeavor that took 12 years to write and create. His latest drama The Place Beyond the Pines is as aspiring as his last and though it is unarguably longwinded and falters on occasion there is much to be admired in its thematic ideas, its technical mastery, and its dramatic ambition. Structured as a triptych, a story split into three distinct but interlinking parts, The Place Beyond the Pines casts a large net of deep seated contemplations on guilt, redemption, and forgiveness. This incredibly Catholic inspired philosophical drama has its own trinity of disconnected fathers, isolated sons, and broken spirits as it showcases the negative consequences of personal aspiration, criminal enterprise, and negating responsibility. All of these heavy themes combined with Cianfrance’s cinematic ability to capture unsettling and realistic interactions will definitely exhaust most viewers, but there is no doubting that The Place Beyond the Pines elucidates the consequences of family and heritage as much as Blue Valentine reflected on romantic disconnection. As each chapter of this dramatic trinity unfolds to be less interesting than the last there is much to be admired in Cianfrance’s dramatic realism, subtle technical achievements, and his fine direction of accomplished actors. Ambition should always be recognized even when the execution isn’t up to par with the depth of intentions and The Place Beyond the Pines shows an auteur who is finding unique ways to express his own philosophical contemplations through the medium of film.

I went to see this abomination in the theatre today and got exactly what I expected: a predictable romantic comedy without the comedy. The only reason I saw it is because one of my friends absolutely ADORES Tina Fey so she HAD to see this movie. Unfortunately, I was the victim she dragged along to witness it. There are very few, if any, redeeming values here. The plot is thin, boring, and worst of all predictable. Not a single thing happens that the audience couldn’t have figured out beforehand. Tina Fey plays the world’s worst admissions officer who is being heckled by a teacher, played by Paul Rudd, to admit one of his “prodigy” students into Princeton. Conveniently, they’re both single and he’s got an adopted son. I’m not spoiling anything by saying they end up in each others arms by the time the credits roll. Oh, and the kid ends up getting admitted. Amazing. Never saw that coming. The acting isn’t too awful but the dialogue is absolutely repulsive. The script mostly has characters uttering one-liners instead of giving them anything meaningful to say. As a result, we are forced to watch cardboard cutouts making unfunny jokes for 2 hours. Most of the jokes fall flat completely, inducing more groans than laughs. I can’t tell you how many times I cringed while watching this garbage. Ugh. The manner in which this movie was edited made me wonder whether the director is suffering from ADD. Random scenes are slapped together with seemingly no effort to maintain a coherent storyline. This achieves nothing but to annoy the audience. All in all, a crummy movie. Tina Fey should definitely stick to SNL as movies are clearly not her thing.

I saw this tonight and was hoping for better but was not entirely surprised. Like other Harmony Korine fare, Spring Breakers plays like a warning about the growing immorality of youth culture, but is curiously lurid and titillating in the way it goes about delivering the too obvious message. The irony was not lost on me. The movie is about a group of four college girls who go on a spring break holiday to a hot spot in Florida. Three of the girls rob a store with plastic guns to acquire the money for the trip. In Florida, they party hard, have sex and do drugs. Eventually they are incarcerated on minor drug charges. It appears that they spend one night in jail. They remain clad in bikinis while in jail and while being arraigned in court. They are then bailed out by a local gangster who wants them to be his harem. Three of the four go along and immerse themselves in his criminal world. The “good” girl, Faith (Selena Gomez), declines and returns home. Apart from the Gomez character, none of the other three have distinct personalities. They are essentially interchangeable. They have no arc. They are not corrupted. They were always corrupt. The gangster isn’t someone who manipulates them. He is more like a kindred spirit. Gomez does display a flash of acting chops here. The rest are portraying characters too shallow to really gauge their performances. It’s too bad the Gomez character exits halfway through. She could have continued to function as a foil for the other three. What ensues in the final acts is predictably just an escalation of everything which had gone on before it but without the morality of Faith as a counterpoint. Korine unfolds the tale in a fragmented and disjointed manner, using slow mo, color saturation/de-saturation and other stylistic techniques. It plays like an extended music video. At its best, it’s hypnotic; at its worse, pretentious. Either way, the stylistic overload will leave most viewers feeling rather detached. We cannot really connect with these characters or their circumstance. They are not subjects but objects. This is not a morality tale about how crime doesn’t pay. To Korine’s credit, he avoids such cliché. However, the film is too thematically shallow for anyone to argue that it isn’t simply voyeuristic. This movie is more about flesh than anything else. You know those movies which are comedies and/or romances that feature lots of footage of scantily spring breakers dancing in and around beaches and pools, featuring lots of jiggly parts? This has about as much of that as any 4 of those movies put together. If you like to see hot young women both scantily clad and un-clad, this is not such a bad thing. But let’s call it Girls Gone Wild. Don’t give us Girls Gone Wild under a thin and shallow artistic veneer.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is back on the Big screen and Boy did he layeth the Smackdown. The story follows the character played by Dwayne, who’s son is caught in drug deal after he was set up,and he tries to reduce his jail sentence By working with Drug Enforcement Administration by helping them to caught some big drug king-pins. The movie is a drama and it is not an outright action flick or something. Props goes to Dwayne johnson for his acting in this flick, given he always have the screen Charisma and personality for the big screen but he’s acting needed improvement and here he’s hard work and effort shows by bringing such an endearing Character to life. One major problem i had with this film was with the storyline of an supporting character Daniel, which makes me say “ok it is decent but go on back to the main storyline” which was far more intense and enjoyable. Other supporting cast is good, the character of agent Cooper and federal lawyer who is suppose to be good but is willing to do anything and putting people on life for her benefit are acted and written very well and yes there are some plot points which look derivative of other film of this drug/crime genre, but with the environment of this film you buy into it. So finally a rare good film in this first quarter of this year.Watch it.

The city that never sleeps, New York is full of activity and noise. One night officer Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) is caught up in a shooting incident. He is cleared of all charges and moves on to become a private eye. He is living a solid life and moved on until he is brought back by his old boss, and Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe) to look into some personal business as he is fighting a neck and neck campaign for re- election. The Mayor is popular, has a beautiful wife Cathleen Hostetler (Catherine Zeta-Jones), and a good track record, seems to be on top of his game until his challengers decides to play hard ball and rattle the campaign. This movie is fast moving and suspenseful, where you get to see the blurred lines between the good and bad guys. Lots of good dark scenes with fast moving action, the talented cast makes for a suspense filled tale. Movie star actor Mark Wahlberg made an appearance at a sneak peek in Atlanta at Atlantic Station, shared with me that “he loves Atlanta and looks forward to working here.” A remarkable biography himself, Wahlberg embodies how you can remake yourself no matter what circumstances you are in. He was all smiles and worked the crowd with a friendly disposition.

Inspired by real events, this silly, intermittently enjoyable thriller takes place in Los Angeles in 1949, where mobster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) is hellbent on taking over the town with his drugs and vice empire. With most of the city’s cops on his payroll, it falls to honest sergeant John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) to lead Ryan Gosling and a small team in an effort to shut down Cohen’s operation through any means necessary. Strong in its period detailing and festooned in wall-to-wall violence, Gangster Squad is slick enough, and yet the action sequences consistently remind you that you’re not watching The Untouchables, as much as director Ruben Fleischer might want you to think you are. And all the muscular gunplay and smoky production design in the land can’t always overcome a sloppy script that ticks every box you might imagine it would. Gosling’s relationship with Cohen’s moll Grace (Emma Stone) aims for Bogart-Bacall cool, but the pair are unexpectedly and disappointingly lacking in heat, and their byplay comes up some way short, while the focus on that and Brolin’s family life means the rest of the squad (Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi) barely register as characters. But a dead-eyed Penn is terrific, and when the action occasionally finds the bullseye, there’s just enough vibrant style to see it through.

Firstly let me answer those who have stated that the senility was over-acted for comic effect. IT WAS NOT. My mother worked in aged care for many years, and I grew up with all this about me. It’s exactly like that. It was brilliantly done, all of it, all the actors… and wasn’t it a treat to see all the old opera and stage stars? Some ”official” critics, (and by the way, what exactly ‘?’ qualifies one to critique anything? I’ve seen more films than most of these people, I’d guess), have said this film lacked the BIG moments. IT DID NOT. The moments are there, you just have to know people – humanity. It did lack being smacked over the head repeatedly with the obvious…so I guess those bred on a diet of Hollywood(our viewers are so stupid we must hand-hold all the way through and belabour the most self evident details)MOVIES, aren’t going to be thrilled or interested. I was. I also like Alien and Predator movies, so it’s not being said with any sort of bias. If you liked Enchanted April, and The Whales of August, The Grass Harp, and Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day, you’ll like this a lot.

I was worried as I started watching it that I wouldn’t be as affected by it as I was by the book. It all worked on me by the end of it though. I think the book did a lot more for Carson and the students and the movie did a lot more for his parents and April. ALLISON JANNEY WAS WONDERFUL. And Christina Hendricks – her side of the story was really missed in the book. So many different sides/themes were missed in the book, but the thoughts and build up in the book made the story feel longer. I think I would have liked the movie more if I hadn’t had read the book because of that – I had different expectations for this movie, so it was a lot better on its second viewing. Rebel Wilson, Sarah Hyland, and Ashley Rickards were great. Chris Colfer knocked it out of the park. Polly Bergen as Carson’s grandma was amazing, as well. Angela Kinsey’s character, the school counselor, was adorable and funny. Actually, the acting was pretty stellar all across the board, except for the one teacher at the beginning of the movie telling Carson what his essay was about. That was bad. April and Sheryl were the best characters, and the best scenes were between Sheryl and Carson, in my opinion. The adult characters were written better and more fleshed out, which made the scenes with Carson’s family on a different level than with the school scenes. However, though the movie didn’t have a lot on the kids Carson blackmailed, I prefer it to the book because the book had Carson too preachy to me when he apologized to the kids/gave them speeches/noticed Vicki cut herself/etc – things were spelled out too much. In the movie I loved that we weren’t told how to feel about Carson or the other kids. He was shown as an unlikeable character (but I did really like him) and that his behavior towards his peers had consequences. Even if high school isn’t forever, you still shouldn’t treat that experience like it doesn’t matter. In the book, he and Malerie’s relationship was better and he decided to listen to her more and be a better friend right before he died. He started to care about his peers instead of just looking down on them because they couldn’t do what he could do. After he blows up at everyone when he tells them he’s blackmailing them to enter his literary magazine, he turns around to talk to Malerie but realizes she had left too, like he couldn’t stop himself from scaring her off, as well. I think having that scene in the movie would have helped Carson’s character in the eyes of the viewer. The revelation of Carson’s positive energy in his death was more special to me in the book because it showed how he really changed and finally had a positive outlook on his life before he died. I’m sad Sheryl didn’t say the line about how Carson was positive when he was struck in the movie, because that was the line that really made me love it and understand it. But this line was “the boy who flew” in the movie to me, so I still really loved how it ended. It still showed he had managed to accomplish things, and that he achieved his dream of getting into his college of choice even if he didn’t get to go to it. The voice-over about needing dreams to take his time was very inspirational, and the last line before the credits with the rising music sealed the message. It wasn’t a perfect movie, but it was still pretty good. Watch it.

I only had one thought on my mind for this Christmas: see Django Unchained. Quentin Tarantino’s latest opus, a Western set two years before the Civil War, concerns a former slave named Django (Jamie Foxx). He is freed by bounty hunter Dr. King Shultz (Christoph Waltz) in order to help him with a bounty. Quite quickly, Shultz takes Django under his wing and trains him as his partner. But he made him a promise: that he would rescue his wife from a plantation owned by the ruthless Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). And rescuing her is not going to be all that easy. What pains me the most about Django Unchained, as a die-hard Tarantino fan, is just how sloppy it all seems. I enjoyed every minute of it, but I could never shake the feeling of how messy and thrown together it all feels. Portions of the film feel episodic (the search for the Brittle Brothers, mentioned heavily in the trailers, begins and ends practically within minutes), and some scenes just seem to play out just for the fun of it. Another scene from the trailers involving a lynch mob with bags covering their faces seems added for comedic purposes, and has no real point of actually existing. More than any of his films before it, Django feels like Tarantino simply making a movie for sheer pleasure and with no outside motivations or controllers. The film threatens to go totally off the rails at any given moment, and lacks any real sense of direction or focus. It may sound ridiculous, but the loss of editor Sally Menke confirms a sneaking suspicion I always had about Tarantino – he needed a steady right hand to help encourage him as to what was needed and what was not. I do not want to criticize Django’s editor Fred Raskin, but it is obvious he is no Menke and that works against the film heavily. It lacks the polish we have come to expect, and is practically stripped of the glossy/cool texture so prevalent in Tarantino’s work up until now. But then maybe that was his intention all along, and perhaps Tarantino is airing out his frustrations with life and film in general. Django is deliberately shot on film (or at least from the print I saw), and looks very gritty and messy at all times. It is significantly more brutally violent than anything he has worked on before (the borderline cartoonish Kill Bill included), and has a very go for broke attitude about itself. The film seems to revel in how brilliantly it can splatter all the blood and gore (done through the use of squibs and no digital!), and how uncomfortably numbing it can make the violence. I know he does not care what people think of his films, but this movie especially seems like an emphatically raised middle finger to the establishment. And for all of my complaints about how messy it all feels, I was never once bored or felt like the movie was dragging itself out. The staggering 165-minute running time shockingly flies by faster than you might ever imagine. Acting wise, Tarantino stacks the deck with a number of recognizable character actors young and old for roles that vary in size. Most have very few lines, if any at all, and seem to just stand by, just as content as the audience is to watch the action unfold. It is a little off-putting, especially with how important some of these characters are initially made out to be. Washington as Broomhilda von Shaft (one of the most subtle references he’s ever dropped) does well as the helpless victim and frequent dreamlike object – but she never really gets to show off any of her acting prowess outside of her facial reactions. They are increasingly effective, especially during horrific flashback scenes. But her work here feels ridiculously stunted in comparison to the other leads. Samuel L. Jackson, much like Tarantino himself, seems to just be having fun in his role as Candie’s adviser Stephen. He plays on every ridiculous stereotype he ever has been associated with and then amps it up to a near ludicrous state. He is frequently hilarious, but the role seems to border on parody more than anything else. Surprisingly, Foxx takes a very long time settling into the leading role. It may just be the character, but it is quite clear from the on- set that he is not very comfortable in Django’s shoes, and leads credence to why Will Smith, amongst so many others, dropped out of the picture so quickly. But once he finds his footing, he does a fantastic job walking the thin line between empathetic and sadistic. It is not an easy character to play, but Foxx makes it his own, bringing a sense of style and grace that are virtually absent from the rest of the film. And of course, he gets all the best lines. Waltz and DiCaprio are the clear standouts however, nailing every nuance of their sadly underwritten characters. While Waltz plays the straight man, DiCaprio is delightfully unhinged and vicious. Both are playing directly against type, yet are strangely comfortable in the roles. Watching them act circles around the rest of the cast, Foxx included, is the true highlight of the film. I just wish they were both given additional emphasis and more to do. For all of its numerous faults, I had a blast watching Django Unchained. It is hilarious, it is a lot of fun, and is wildly enjoyable. I genuinely think it could have been a lot better if there was more focus and direction, but this is very clearly a picture Tarantino wanted to make on his own terms. And for that, I applaud him for the effort. It is not his best work, but certainly not his worst. 8/10.

As a massive film fan, my tastes are very wide-ranging, but I do have a problem with musicals. Nevertheless I was happy to take the opportunity of a private viewing of “Les Misérables” at the London office of distributors Universal – the day after the London première and a month before the UK release – because of the outstanding success of the original stage show (a run of 27 years with a total audience of over 60 million) and the surprising and impressive cast list (Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne). The showing was introduced by producer Eric Fellner of Working Title who underlined the commercial challenge of making a film in which all the dialogue is sung and the themes are so political and praised director Tom Hooper (”The King’s Speech”) for his insistence that every take was sung live. The two main characters are presented in the opening seconds of a sweeping introductory sequence: the police inspector Javert (Crowe) and the prisoner 24601 Jean Valjean (Jackman) in post-revolutionary France. There follows over two and half hours with barely a spoken word which will not appeal to all cinema-goers, but the production is a triumph with Cameron Mackintosh’s musical opened up by dramatic shooting on Pinewood’s brand new Richard Attenborough stage and some historic English locations. If Crowe and especially Jackman are excellent, Hathaway – who lost 25 pounds and most of her hair for the role – is outstanding as the destitute Fantine and Cohen and Carter almost steal the show as the comical Thénardier innkeepers. I’m not sure how long it will take for “Les Misérables” to recoup its investment cash- wise, but it’s going to win award after award and rightly so.

Description

If war is a drug, then apparently so, too, is counter-terrorism. While this theme isn’t literally splashed across the screen in the same manner The Hurt Locker set up the recurring point about its protagonist, Zero Dark Thirty portrays a CIA agent every bit as consumed by her mission as the former’s bomb disposal expert. And once again, the mission that has crept its way into both heart and soul involves keeping ticking bombs from blowing up in one way or another. Director Kathryn Bigelow, whose The Hurt Locker won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, tells us the story of the multi-year, global hunt for Osama bin Laden, seen through the eyes of CIA analyst Maya. Maya, portrayed by Jessica Chastain in the performance I believe will win her the Oscar for Best Actress, was recruited right out of high school and has spent her career — indeed, her entire adult life — pursuing bin Laden. She knows nothing else, she does nothing else, and so she attacks her task relentlessly, constantly working herself into unpredictable outbursts amid an otherwise calmly calculating aggression. And that sums up the entire film’s pursuit of its narrative. It maintains a tension pulling the viewers’ nerves tighter and tighter as the aggression boils just under the surface, waiting to erupt in unpredictably violent moments. It bears down on you with a pace that will leave you exhausted, until you walk out at the end realizing the muscles in your neck and back are corded and strained, and you’re emotionally spent without any clear sense of precisely what the emotions are, because they come quickly and often painfully, yet the film never tells you how to feel. I think it’s one of the director’s intentions that by the end, all of that wound up tension and mental exhaustion and uncertainty will give you a sense of what it must’ve felt like for Maya, probably every moment of her life. So you aren’t a casual observer, even while the movie presents the story in a very matter-of-fact manner that’s meant to avoid any clear stance on any of the issues involved. It might try toward objectivity, but dispassion? Never. It reminds me quite a lot of All the President’s Men, for the hyper realism of detailed portrayals of what went on behind the scenes in the data gathering and examination, in the search for leads and people with any helpful information, and in the constant confrontations with bosses and other workers whose own agendas and motivations conflicted or caused them to doubt one another’s conclusions and even the point of the whole exercise. However, regardless of the similarities to films of the past or times gone by, this is most of all a film of its era. For a decade we have been at war, a war supposedly launched to find and punish Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda for the attacks of September 11, 2001. We searched and tried to capture or kill bin Laden, until it proved hard enough that it became easier to pretend he didn’t matter after all — despite the fact we invaded Afghanistan supposedly because they refused to hand him over. For several years, he was like a ghost, seemingly forgotten, as the war turned in a new direction and we began to face the ugly revelations about torture and mass civilian casualties. Over time, any hope of a definitive end to the wars or to the fear or to the controversies was lost. And then came rumors, followed quickly by confirmation, that Osama bin Laden had been found and killed. The man we’d turned into a mythical monster, only to transform him later into an irrelevant missing person, was gone. Screenwriter Mark Boal also deserves praise for not overtelling his story, for trusting that the power of its meaning is deeper and depends on audiences to see the events and understand the narrative instinctively. This is easily Bigelow’s and Boal’s best work to date, which is saying a lot. But this will undoubtedly make the film difficult to watch for many viewers. The pace and tension alone is already brutal, as are the torture sequences that go into graphic detail, and several killings are shown up close in all their bloody detail. It’s hard to watch but you’ll have a more difficult time looking away from the screen. This is the best picture of 2012 — and the most memorable. In my opinion.

I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to this film. First of all, I think it’s about time I profess my love for David O’Russell because he keeps making movies that I simply can’t get enough of. If there’s one thing I’ve learned this year when it comes to movies, it’s find a director you love and follow him or her blindly. There’s styles you’ll love, and styles you’ll hate, find the ones you click with and never let go. Silver Linings Playbook has generated a lot of hype since its worldwide premiere at TIFF, and frankly, as far as I’m concerned, it deserves all the praise its received. It is by far the best film I saw at the festival, and is easily one of the most memorable films of 2012. Based on the novel by Matthew Quick, Silver Linings follows the life of Pat (Bradley Cooper) as he moves back into his parents’ house after spending months in a mental institution because of a violent outburst that occurred after he found his wife with another man. The movie follows Pat as he attempts to get back his life back, but he meets a new challenge as Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence, who is completely girl crush worthy) finds his way into his life. I honestly can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a movie more from beginning to end. O’Russell brilliantly tells a heartwarming, yet complicated and hilarious tale, that leaves you on the edge of the seat. The cast is wonderful, and all deserving of nominations in the 2012 award season. If people didn’t know of Jennifer Lawrence before, they will now. She’s quirky, complicated, hilarious, and you really just can’t get enough of her. DeNiro also delivers a strong performance as Cooper’s Philadelphia Eagle’s loving, somewhat OCD father. If there is one movie worth seeing this year, it’s Silver Linings Playbook. The story may follow a family in a very serious situation, but we can all identity with the truth and emotions that comes with struggling through times. It’s a story that’s easy to connect with, and it’s a film that will make you smile from beginning to end. Catch this movie when it comes out in November, and I promise you, you won’t regret it.

I try extremely hard to not read reviews, especially for Oscar hopefuls. At Telluride and Toronto, Roger Michell’s Hyde Park on Hudson received mixed-to-negative reviews citing the film’s weak screenplay and other off-putting manners. Chalk this up to a guilty pleasure but I found Hyde Park on Hudson charmingly delightful. From the charismatic turn by Bill Murray as FDR to what I found to be a near pitch-perfect performance by Samuel West, the stylistic quality by director Roger Michell was satisfying. The clear problem with the film is the screenplay by Richard Nelson. One thing that annoys me about films sometimes is when a screenwriter (or director) choose to begin a film in what feels like the 45th minute of the film. The film tells the story of Margaret Suckley (Laura Linney), FDR’s fifth cousin, and her relationship with the president (Bill Murray) surrounding his visit from the King (Samuel West) and Queen (Olivia Colman) of England in 1939. Nelson chooses to start the film with nearly zero back story for Suckley and the bridge to the famous Hyde Park on Hudson. The film is rushed right into the thick of the story (and a hand job) within 10 minutes time. It also doesn’t help that the film is overtly misogynistic in tone and view towards women. I can definitely see many people being offended. Surprise standout Samuel West as “King George” Outside of writing, Hyde Park on Hudson is pure fun and harmlessly amusing. This is one of Murray’s best performances, dancing his way throughout the film with magnetism and allure. Laura Linney is fine in a role that brings a lot of frustration to the audience. As Queen Elizabeth, Olivia Colman brings precision and authority to the role that lacked in Helena Bonham Carter’s role in Tom Hooper’s The King Speech (2010). Colman’s role allows for Hollywood to see how good she is and will hopefully lead to more available roles for her to shine. Olivia Williams, a brilliant and underrated actress, is simply outstanding in her minimal screen time as Eleanor Roosevelt. If she had more development added to her character, Williams would be on an Oscar ballot easy. With the small amount she has, Williams still delivers an Oscar- worthy turn. Best-in-show goes to Samuel West as King George IV, who manages to steal the spotlight from the likes of Murray and Colman without even trying. It’s a performance that stands among some of the best of 2012 so far. It’s an impressive and surprising turn by West. The sets are very well done by Production Designer Simon Bowles while the score by Jeremy Sams stands out as one of the year’s creative thus far. “Hyde Park” is loads of entertainment and thoroughly enjoyable.

This is a taut drama/suspense film with a little romance and crime thrown in for good measure. The biggest problem I’m having is deciding which was better, the well done intertwining story lines, or the detailed character development. Both were excellent, making for a movie that is quite enjoyable and well worth watching. The actors all did fine jobs, Eric Bana as the robber who is a killer, Olivia Wilde as the little sister who maybe has outgrown her need to be protected, Charlie Hunnam as her troubled but worthwhile romantic interest, Sissy Spacek and Kris Kristofferson as his parents, Kate Mara as the aspiring FBI agent deputy, and Treat Williams as her father the Sheriff. Their performances were all worthy of this well written and directed feature. I have never heard of the writer or director, but I plan to watch for more of their stuff. This one is not a long movie by today’s standards, but the pace of the action, and the time spent letting us figure out each character are so well balanced. Make sure your snacks are ready ahead of time as, once this one starts, you will not want to miss a second of it (or even use the pause button once it is out on DVD). Simply put, this is a good movie. Even knowing what happens, I’ll probably watch it again sometime.

Brad Pitt and Andrew Dominik’s fantastic Killing Them Softly has the rigor and grace of the great American crime pictures of the 1970s. A loose adaptation of George V Higgins’ great 1974 crime novel Cogan’s Trade. A fulfilling elegant and stylish black comedy. The script, acting, direction were all superbly done, and should be commended. Although the film can be very pessimistic, it does have a message, one that should resonate in the near future. The whole cast was extremely effective and highly believable. However Brad Pitt is simply terrific, and deserves much acclaim that could come to him. Just like The Assassination of Jesse James, Pitt plays subtle, but yet powerful sociopath and it ripples the film throughout. James Gandolfini Gandolfini is excellent as a boozy, broken old assassin. Ray Liotta offers a grotesque reprise of the type of manic gangster he played in his younger years in Goodfellas. Richard Jenkins is solemn as ever as the killer’s contact, relaying back messages from the Mob and trying to beat Cogan down on prices. All the men here are relentlessly sexist and foul-mouthed. Dominik shoots the action in a grimy shallow focus and his screenplay is tough as steel and shot through with pessimistic, even black humor. There is no mistaking the fact that Dominik loves his characters, letting their dialogue shine uninterrupted. Although the The political message is a little heavy-handed and a bit repetitive, Andrew Domink crafts a memorable and highly thought-provoking crime film, with Brad Pitt shows the world again, that he’s a fantastic actor that always surpasses the hype around him.

Over Thanksgiving, I’m sure everybody had something to be thankful for. “For what” you may ask? The final chapter of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Part 2, that’s what. Fans of the series – the films, and the books by Stephanie Meyer that they were based on – will be thankful that it ends in a way that will satisfy them, although they’ll also be saddened that the series is now over. Those who hate the franchise will be thankful that it’s all finally over. Bottom line: If you love the franchise, you’re not going to be disappointed. If you can’t stand it, this will not change your mind. Taking place immediately after Breaking Dawn Part 1 concluded, Bella Swan, after giving birth to her daughter Reneesme, has completed her transformation from human to vampire. She adjusts to her new life with her husband Edward and his family fairly quickly, but has trouble with the fact that her friend Jacob (a werewolf) has imprinted on Reneesme… it’s creepy. Soap opera struggles have to wait, though. The Volturi, the high council of vampire law, is planning an attack against the child, fearing that it may pose a threat to their kind, and their secrecy. To protect Reneesme, the Cullens assemble allies to serve as witnesses in their defense. Like each of the other Twilight movies, the movie is ridiculous. The acting, action, and even the dialogue have tendencies to go over the top, and produce unintentional laughs. If you enjoy that sort of thing, this will suit you just fine. Still, this is the best looking film thus far. The photography is great, and considering Guillermo Navarro shot it, how could it not be? In addition to all of this, the acting is inconsistent between the stars, many of which seem to gradually accept just how ridiculous these movies really are. The fact still remains that there are so many characters to keep track of, that they can’t, and it goes without saying that the supporting actors, three in particular, are more interesting than the three leads. Ashley Greene hits all the right notes as Alice, my absolute favorite character from the books. Billy Burke earns his place as series MVP, as Charlie Swan is the one character that every movie got exactly right. Still, Michael Sheen is the clear standout as Volturi leader Aro. You can see, plain on his face, he does not take this at all seriously, and he camps it up to levels of Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. What a delight he is. In Conclusion, I want to talk about one thing in this movie that rubbed me the wrong way. And here’s where we get into major spoiler territory. If you don’t care that the movie will be spoiled for you, feel free to read. If you haven’t seen it, but you want to, I suggest you stop reading now. I would rarely go into such detail, but this one thing made me furious. So, before the climax of this movie begins, Alice (who has the power to see visions of the future) brings evidence that Reneesme will not be harmful to their species to Aro (who has the ability to read an individual’s memories). It turns out that no evidence will sway Aro, so an epic battle of the Cullen vampires and the wolves against the Volturi begins. This is easily the best sequence the Twilight saga has ever given us. Epic, beautifully staged, and honestly very intense, this ten minute sequence alone was making this the best movie yet. And so, just as Aro is about to be killed, we cut back to him and Alice, with the two sides still standing off. It turns out that the whole battle was just a vision that Alice had, one that will happen should Aro attack. In short, this resolution is the most ridiculous, most frustrating, and most insulting cop out that you can imagine. How did these people think that could possibly work? Did they think no one would question it? That we’d just accept it? Well, newsflash! There is no way to accept it. There is no way to defend it, either. With all of that in mind, if you’re just in the mood for a simple guilty pleasure, this one’s not too bad. At least, for the most part it’s not that bad. For me, everything was going good until that foolish twist.

The one and only Steven Spielberg has directed this historic biopic that re-tells the events taken place during the final months of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, and the troubles that he went through to pass the thirteenth amendment and abolish slavery, while dealing with family issues of his own. At a running time of 150 minutes, “Lincoln” is another terrific entry in Spielberg’s life-long career as a film director. Perfectly casted as the determined president, Daniel Day-Lewis is a terrific method actor that always knocks the ball out of the park in every performance, whether playing a crippled writer in “My Left Foot”, or an obsessed oil worker in “There Will Be Blood”, and his performance in “Lincoln” is no exception. He definitely disappears into the character, and delivers a interesting take on this historical figure. He embodies the true spirit and wisdom that Lincoln was known for having, and he absolutely nails it. It’s a performance that I hope will score Daniel Day-Lewis another Best Actor nomination. As for the supporting cast, Sally Field does a rather fine job playing Mary Todd Lincoln, James Spader is perfect playing the sharp mind of W.N. Bilbo, and we get a few limited roles from big names such as David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Hal Holbrook, Jackie Earle Haley, and Michael Stuhlbarg. But, it’s Tommy Lee Jones, who delivers the stand-out supporting performance, whom also deserves an Oscar nomination, for his brave portrayal as Thaddeus Stevens, the one who seems to be dissatisfied with the thirteenth amendment. There is no need for me to go into rough detail on how beautifully Steven Spielberg directs this movie. He always knows how to keep the viewer invested in the story, and delivers some stunning visuals to the piece, from Janusz Kaminski’s remarkable use of cinematography, to the terrific musical scoring of John Williams. Entirely taken place in the White House and the Capitol Building, where the driving force in the film, is the interesting dialouge shared between the characters in the film, that deliver an interesting take on how Lincoln was able to pass this amendment. But although screenwriter Tony Kushner’s script delivered some memorable moments for sure, there are some bloated moments that kind of let me off-guard, and although never leaving me bored, it’s the moments of the political speak that left me a little dazed. When an entire movie has nothing but dialouge, it has to be very interesting, which it definitely is, but at times, kind of got me confused. There are also some moments when some characters felt unnecessary, or didn’t feel developed well, and “Lincoln” would have been better off with a shorter running time, rather than 150 minutes. But, there was nothing bad that can affect the scope of this film. The masterful directing, brilliant acting, stunning visuals, and beautiful music, are all joined together for one interesting biography on of the greatest American presidents. This is one of the most important films of the whole year. From the opening shot on the battlefield to the final moving speech at the end, “Lincoln” is one of 2012’s best films. I can easily imagine Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones, Steven Spielberg, and the movie itself getting nominated for a couple of awards. “Lincoln”, in my review, “historically intriguing and remarkable, if flawed”.

I bought the book when it was first being touted as a literary gem but then decided not to read it, so I have nothing to gauge how well Ang Lee did in interpreting the book. That said, this is one of the most endearing movies I’ve ever seen. My first thought having just seen it was, thank God some studio didn’t get a hold of it first to do an American take on the book. This movie so deserves and demands its setting and foreign lead actors. I admit I probably would have enjoyed one of our better young leads in the role of Pi, but I’m much better off having grappled with the Indian chosen by Lee who, for some reason, populates this movie with everything from Mexicans, Indians, Japanese and Anglos to tigers, hyenas, orangutans and zebras, but not one Chinese person. I thought that a little odd but perhaps the books that way too. I saw the 2D version mainly because I was expecting some exploration of the god issue, but I was mostly disappointed in that. The talk of religion is very brief and not very interesting. What was interesting is the survival story and the boy’s relationships with wild animals. I had no idea whether for the most part I was watching a real tiger or not. Let’s just say that if Lee had to wait for the tiger to do everything he does in this movie, he by rights should still be out there filming. Someone with a real love for animals and an eye for their behavior clearly had a hand in making these scenes look real. And then there are the shots at sea. The sea rises in great swells and you would think Pi is actually in a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific being carelessly tossed around by a violent storm; it’s truly masterful, unprecedented filmmaking. Even my wife who is no friend to animals thought the movie went by quickly and was happy to have seen it.

There are a few films releasing now that it is plain and simple they will receive the Oscar nods. I think Flight is certainly one of those. It reeks critics favourite. Strong cast, male lead that everyone loves, brilliantly talented film maker, and an ethical debate for the ages wrapped in a strong emotionally driven story. All those things including the fact that critics love it doesn’t necessarily make it a good film. It is, however, a good film. I don’t feel like its a great film but it is definitely good. The story is excellent but the pacing for the film just seems off. I think some better editing to bring the film down to even a tidy two hours would have been plenty. The massive 2 1/2 hour length was simply not necessary. I felt like there was a number of scenes that simply could have been avoided. As many reviewers pointed out, and even a lengthy thread in the forums, the opening scene where Nadine Velazquez walks around completely naked making sure we see her at every angle. It was gratuitous and completely pointless and I’m really surprised that Zemeckis bothered with the scene. I enjoy Denzel Washington. However, I often find his performances as of late very egotistical. Fortunately for him this particular role required exactly that. His character is a damaged, egotistical man with very little redemptive qualities. He really does a great job and will likely get an Oscar nod for it. Kelly Reilly is Washington’s love interest and a recovering drug addict. She does alright although her performance lacks the same depth as Washington’s does. They have good chemistry and I understand why her character was important and yet her entire story arc was more fodder that could have been cut or reduced significantly. Tamara Tunie does an excellent job in her role as a respected flight attendant. I would have liked to have seen more from her character. She was really great. Bruce Greenwood nails his performance as Washington’s friend and mentor. The two of them play off each other easily and with excellence. Don Cheadle is very good as the straight laced brilliant lawyer. This is one character they should have spent more time on and gotten rid of some of the other filler. As much as I like John Goodman I thought he played one of the characters that was simply unnecessary. Robert Zemeckis is probably one of the most brilliant directors. He has created two of my favourite films of all time and a handful of other truly brilliant classics. This, in my opinion, was a far cry from a Zemeckis film. It was a powerful story and had some really moving moments but there just felt like so much there that didn’t need to be. The pacing was simply off. The crash scene was intense and brilliant and so well done and parts of the film are extremely well done. It could have been huge and for me, entertainment wise, it was just good and falls short of really great. 7/10

This film was fantastic. I loved the first film and it was a surprise breakout hit of the year. So when I heard a sequel was coming, I was there for the first showing in my local cinema. As a sequel – it did have a problem of trying to put these ordinary characters into an impossible situation yet again. The first time you could imagine the circumstances behind the kidnapping and relate to the idea that this happens in the real world and it was spot-lighting a true tragedy in the world today. As a sequel, it couldn’t repeat any of that without it looking copied or forced into the plot. The writers had to find a way of bringing the same cast back while tying it into the events of the last film somehow. While they did this superbly, it has to be said that the ‘this might happen to your daughter’ angle that the first film gave is not present in this film. This is more of an action driven showcase which is about the world these characters have created for themselves, not one they have been thrust into. I was fine with this as it’s a sequel – but some of the other reviewers on this site appear to have wanted a complete remake of the original – which this is most definitely not. It takes the elements that made the original outstanding and tries to build something new with them – which I applaud tremendously. The use of intelligent spy work is still present. The mixed fighting styles, gun fights, car chases etc all still there making this a great film. The only thing really missing was the tying up of the mum / dad getting back together storyline that they started at the beginning but abandoned when it could have been acknowledged with a simply kiss at the very end of the film. Because the first film showed us a new form of crime on the big screen that had not been explored before, and a whole criminal empire with a brand new action super spy to play with, it will forever be the best in the series – no matter how many sequels they make. But this film stands firmly up there with it as one of the best films of its year and you can be sure I will be first in line for the third film also when they undoubtedly make that also. This film is already in my top 10 of favourite films of all time and I thank everyone who had a hand in making it a success.

For as long as there have been schools, there have been good teachers and bad teachers, involved parents and uninterested parents, naturally gifted students and those students who struggle. Perhaps there is more good than bad today, then again perhaps not. It can’t be ignored, though, that there are schools, and even entire areas, where students are failing at an alarming rate. Teachers alone can’t fix this. Parents alone can’t fix this. Even most students alone, barring the most motivated and gifted among us, can’t fix this. It takes good teachers, involved parents, and students who have made a commitment to excel, to fix this problem. That’s what we get in Won’t Back Down. You might hate the supposedly anti-union message, or turn up your nose at the idea that a child is scarred for life by one bad teacher, but neither of these are reasons to disregard this movie. First of all, while the movie does spotlight the downside of teacher’s unions, there is plenty of union-love as well. And secondly, one bad teacher certainly can make the difference between a child who loves school and a child who dreads it, even if it’s only for one year. And one bad year of school, especially elementary school where every learning experience is a building block for the later years, can be devastating. I am highly sensitive to movies with a heavy-handed political agenda. I honestly didn’t feel that here. I didn’t take this movie as a guide to removing unions from schools. What I witnessed was the idea that if parents, teachers and students band together to make their school a better place, they can hope for a brighter future. Student by student, school by school, we can improve education in America. That people want to fight over whether teachers should be protected rather than whether students should be given an opportunity to excel, well that’s really the crux of the problem, now, isn’t it? Beyond the controversial topics addressed, I found this film to be very satisfying. The plot was well-developed, Viola Davis and Maggie G played well off of each other, the children were very good in their roles, and the pacing was steady. It’s always inspirational to see a group of people with very little in common come together for the greater good, and if nothing else you will definitely get that here. How can we not enjoy watching parents engaged in the school system and rallying to secure the future of their children? Don’t watch this to pick apart (or champion) charter schools, watch this to remember just who education is supposed to benefit. Watch this and remember that good teachers could use a little encouragement, bad teachers should be called out, the system needs to be challenged every now and then, and children will respond to their environment, whether it’s positive or negative, in ways that will surprise and sometimes amaze you.

When I actually sit down and think about it, there aren’t many good movies about your average, every day police officer. There are a couple notable television series’, like “Hill Street Blues” and the now dated but oddly fascinating reality series “Cops”, but on film, these guys don’t get a lot of luck. I guess everyone would rather see movies about undercover officers or detectives. Well for anyone like me who’s been waiting for it, here it is. End Of Watch, an excellent take on the genre. It may not be perfect, but it’s unique and shows the day to day life more effectively than most if any cop movies I’ve seen, and as such I think it will one day be essential viewing for fans of the genre. In the film we meet Brian Taylor, an ex-marine working as a police officer while he works his way through law school. He also just so happens to be taking a class in filmmaking and is filming his experiences to make a documentary for said class, and this is where we get much of our view into the film from. Featured frequently in the film is his partner Mike, often called Z. After stumbling upon a drug-lord at a routine traffic stop, they quickly fall into trouble with the cartel and have to fight their way through it while still trying to figure out where it’s all coming from. The great thing about this mockumentary/found footage style isn’t so much the way it’s able to present the action of being a cop realistically (which it does but so do normally shot movies), but it better gives us an understanding of what happens inbetween the action. Being a fly on the wall in the various dull, inappropriate, and often times hilarious conversations the two have when patrolling brings the film a much needed dose of comic relief, but the kind that never feels forced. It’s all set up naturally. This really gives a chance for stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena to shine as well as they fit so naturally into these characters, often sounding unscripted whether or not they are. They play them as regular guys instead of complex characters which may make them a little less compelling, but all the more fun to watch. The film also mixes in a variety of other video sources from the dashboard cams of the police cruisers to security cameras. This really benefits the style as a whole. 99% of the time, using the self-shot, found footage for an entire film can come off as gimmicky and unnecessary, but by using a variety of sources the director is able to keep the realistic tone consistent while downplaying the gimmick idea and instead choosing to use Brian’s self shot footage and monologues to the camera only when they prove most effective to the story. Along the way the film is also interspersed with subplots of Brian meeting his new girl Janet, played by Anna Kendrick who makes a memorable impression despite her little screen time, as well as Z and his wife having a baby. While I find it hard to really complain about Anna Kendrick (she’s just so damn cute! And she looked stunning on stage introducing the film), these subplots, while important for character development, are thrown in a little too randomly throughout and mess with the overall flow of the film. It’s not a huge complaint as I’ve seen it done worse in other movies, but it could’ve been solved with some tighter editing. But who knows, this was the premiere I saw, studios still often tweak movies before wide-release. Fortunately for writer/director David Ayer, this is really the only complaint I have about the film. The entire movie is fairly well written. I did find the dialogue of a lot of the street thugs to be cliché and racially stereotypical, but the things Brian and Z say are priceless throughout and help you deal with a lot of the more serious scenes, and there are quite a few of them. For as entertaining and light-hearted as it is at times, End Of Watch has many dark, brutally violent, and emotionally impacting scenes that are not for the feint of heart. They do ultimately seem necessary though as the film needs action to keep it going, and to create the realistic document of day to day police life it’s trying to create, which does get pretty brutal sometimes despite the mostly mundane times in between. The important thing though is that the film is able to balance all of these moments so well. David Ayer has dedicated what seems to be his whole career to police movies. Most are mediocre to bad (Street Kings), some are genre classics (Training Day), but I think End Of Watch is by far his finest. It easily has the most likable characters, and as such the most emotional involvement for the audience, which thus creates the most tension in the high risk, action scenes. It has the most believable story of any of his movies, or most cop movies for that matter, and lastly it just told in an interesting way. Neither the cop story, found footage action or fly on the wall comedy genres are anything new, but End of Watch takes old ideas and fits them together to make something interesting. In conclusion, it’s tough to go wrong with End Of Watch if you’re a fan of the genre. Even if you’re not particularly fond of cop movies, I’d still recommend it. It’s a highly entertaining, tension filled ride of a movie. It may not be as deep as some other movies coming out now, but it really brings you into another world well. It’s well written, well directed, well acted, and was well enjoyed by the whole crowd. Check it out.
