“No game in the world is as tidy and dramatically neat as baseball, with cause and effect, crime and punishment, motive and result, so cleanly defined.” Paul Gallico The Trouble with the Curve is that there is no “curve ball” in the script, which seems almost computerized from the baseball-cliché app. However, for those who couldn’t get enough of crusty Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino, he’s back for more curmudgeon as Gus, an aging scout for the Atlanta Braves who eschews sabermetrics and all such scientific analysis in favor of old fashioned gut work, especially hearing the sound of a ball hitting a glove and a ball hitting a bat. First-time director Robert Lorenz, a producer for many Eastwood films, makes sure the heroic Eastwood hero follows the formulaic plays so long a part of the Eastwood game. Difficult Gus doesn’t much abide his accomplished daughter, Mickey (Amy Adams), whose bid for partnership in her law office is a sign that he may have done something right, not that he would ever talk to her of his feelings about anything. She accompanies him scouting out a potential star in North Carolina as she sees how his eyesight has deteriorated and could need help. But Gus, in vintage Eastwood style, accepts no help, and so the story slips into formula with Mickey romancing a former star, Johnny (Justin Timberlake); a young Braves scout, Philip (Matthew Lillard), getting his comeuppance, and the world improbably going everyone’s way at the most contrived, vapid, and neatly tied together conclusion in baseball film history. In other words original material is absent, Moneyball looks like Citizen Kane next to this froth, and both films share a similar combat between the old scouts and the upstarts with their computers. In Moneyball the metrics win out; in Trouble the gut does its job. But then, in most Eastwood movies, with him as director or just actor, the bullies are humiliated and the old guys win the match. The young women, e.g., in Million Dollar Baby and Trouble, gritty though they are, learn and win largely because they’re Clint’s protégés. Baseball is never like that except in the movies.

Greetings again from the darkness. Brace for gushing. Last evening I attended a screening that included a fascinating Q&A with writer/director Stephen Chbosky. It reminded me of how personal and intimate and observant and incisive a well-made film can be. A well written script is so refreshing, and an exceptional script can be truly breath-taking. Mr. Chbosky takes the unusual step of directing his own screenplay based on his own novel (a 1999 bestseller), and he left me stunned and enthralled. The popularity of the novel would typically make the film version a disappointment for its fans. Not so this time. Mr. Chbosky remains true to the spirit despite the need to edit for the sake of continuity and brevity. The key characters spring to life thanks to the efforts of four strong performances from young actors: Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson, The Three Muskateers) plays Charlie, Emma Watson (Harry Potter films) is Sam, Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin, City Island) is Patrick, and Mae Whitman (Arrested Development) is Mary Elizabeth. If you have read the book, you know the story … you know the characters … you know the themes. If you haven’t read the book, I will spoil nothing. The brilliance is recognized only as you get to know these characters and slowly uncover their stories. What we discover is that, regardless of our age, we recognize these characters from our high school days. We know the introverted, observant Charlie who so desperately needs a support system. We surely recognize the attention-starved, lacking in self-esteem Sam who is the epitome of “We accept the love we think we deserve”. And we all knew a Patrick … the flamboyant one who sheaths his pain with an over-the-top act of public confidence. What Chbosky does is shine the spotlight on these characters to ensure that we really SEE them this time. The themes reminded me a bit of a darker John Hughes film (that’s a compliment). There were also pieces of two other really good films: Stand By Me and Almost Famous. The formative years of a writer determine the depths to which his or her work will reach later in life. Admittedly, the film is substantially autobiographical, so when Mr. Chbosky says it’s a personal story, we begin to understand the foundation of his remarkable writing style. “Welcome to the island of misfit toys.” When this line is spoken, we realize that most every high school kid has thought the same thing at some point. These are painful and difficult times and as Mr. Chbosky stated, we should encourage kids to fight through this stage and get on to the next … then able to find their true self. Clearly, the film made a strong impact on me. My favorite reaction to a movie is profound thought, and this one caused this in waves. The decision to release as PG-13 was wise. There is no excess of profanity or nudity to divert attention from what really matters … the characters. I can think of no finer compliment to a writer and filmmaker than to cite them as the cause of my internal discussions related to their film. My hope is that you have the same reaction.

I was fortunate enough to see this film much earlier than most. To me it seems like Anderson is really hitting his stride with this one. It was odd to me that upon exiting the theater the thing that I wondered about most of all is what the hell is he going to do next! The Master is not an easy movie to sit through, and at times you don’t even know what the movie wants. But then you realize that the movie doesn’t want anything. All it asks is for you to observe. More so than his earlier films, “The Master” and “There Will Be Blood” really venture into the realm of the film as being a purely cinematic presentation of a life. Anderson doesn’t pass judgment or any point of view, he merely stretches the canvas which allows his characters to speak for themselves. Yes, there is a beginning, middle and an end, but is there? Do we really have a sense of catharsis at the end of “There Will Be Blood”? or do we simply understand “man” a little better? Anderson insisted, as I’m sure he would say the same for this film, that “There Will Be Blood” wasn’t a metaphor for anything. It was what it was. No hidden meaning, no sophisticated and often formulaic subtext. It’s simply man. As Hoffman’s character says in the trailer for “The Master” – “But above all, I am a man”. The movie deals with an interesting idea of the leader vs. the soldier, master vs. slave. It breaks down the anatomy of a relationship so you may interpret it in any way you’d like. It’s beautifully shot on 65/70mm film which is the way I saw it and the way I recommend for you to see it if you get a chance to. Feels almost as if Anderson is giving the finger to the digital revolution by shooting his film on a resolution so high that digital can only dream of getting there in about ten years or so. The acting and the dialog is superb as you’d expect. Phoenix and Hoffman are on a different level here, especially Phoenix in a role of a life time. There are definitely times in this film that he completely disappears into that role. There is also some great supporting work from Laura Dern and others. It would be difficult to place this film in his body of work. More than anything it feels like the natural continuation of what he started with “There Will Be Blood”. Not to say that he will continue on this path but just that this is definitely a more narrowly focused film than some of his earlier ensemble work. I found it to be less engaging than some of his other work and yet there was never a dull moment. You’re always on your toes, trying to understand what’s going on and where the movie is leading you. It really is simply, just like man, a fascinating piece of work.

Description

An American classic tale of the stubborn humble country folk bootleggers resisting corrupt city politicians and the mob. I watched this film at the Cannes as a filmmaker myself I was attending the festival to screen my own film. All the stars turned up to support the film and attended the main evening screening including Nick Cave (the main man behind the scenes for screenplay and score). The film received a rapturous applause after the screening, it is after all a classic modern gangster tale of good-old-boys moon-shiners going up against the mob when they refuse to tow the line and pay protection money to gangsters working for the local corrupt elected official. A family of three brothers, the elder two Tom Hardy and Jason Clarke play Forrest and Howard Bondurant, legendary local hard men and indestructible war hero, their younger sibling Shia LaBeouf plays Jack Bondurant a young man trying desperately to live up to and gain respect from his older brothers. When gangsters fronted by Guy Pearce as Special Agent Charlie Rakes (as an eccentric very scary villain) comes to town, with the assistance of the local constabulary, the offer is made to give up a piece of their action making moon-shine in the nearby hills or to feel the wrath of the law. The brothers are set in their ways, bend down to no man and a confrontation is in the offing. Without giving too much away, Jessica Chastain as Maggie turns up in town having escaped from cruel violent men in the city, she is given a job by Forrest and a very slow romance begins, she is smouldering, sassy and the only strong woman in the film. Yes…this is a boys movie, the scenes of brutal violence will repulse a female audience, but then again they will probably turn up in droves to watch La Beouf turn out a strong assured well developed leading man’s performance. Jason Clarke as Howard is strong and as always totally believable, though it is perhaps for Hardy’s remarkable modern John Wayne homage performance that the film will most likely be remembered, for he uses all John Wayne’s classic acting tips “Say less, say it low and say it slow”, enabling Hardy to once again turn out a remarkably memorable star building performance that will both melt the ladies hearts and make him the envy of every young tough man wanting to make a name for himself as a hard man leader type. Gary Oldman appears briefly in a couple of memorable scenes, as always understated and highly memorable, he plays his part in building the legend of the Bondurant brothers, but I only wish that his character had been given a bigger part in the story. The golden team that made The Proposition (2005)are re-united, John Hillcoat doing a great job of Directing once more, and both the script and fabulous country Bluegrass and bluesy score, being provided by the music legend in real life Nick Cave. Though the critics Jury at the Cannes film festival undeservedly did not vote for the film favourably (most probably because they did not like to see the three anti-heroes law breakers prevail against the police, corrupt though they were), it is more likely that at an art-house festival the reviews took exception that they were forced to watch and review a main stream film. Whilst The Proposition was an art-house hit Lawless will have undoubtedly enjoy much wider distribution and be remembered as a modern gangster classic. The original book was written by Jake’s very own grandson, brought up on the true story, if most probably slightly exaggerated over repeated retelling though the ages. The film, thoroughly enjoyable and very highly recommended.

Description

Hey, Hey, It’s Robbie K with another movie review for the masses. The movie of choice this time is Bradley Cooper’s latest film entitled the Words, a tale about a struggling writer that discovers a story unlike any he has read. He’s so captivated and impressed with the story he decides to submit it to the publishers as his own work leading to a high point in his career. However, a road block is soon hit as the original author returns and demands to confront the man who has plagiarized his work. What will happen? When I saw the category Drama/Romance I immediately thought I was getting another chick flick or soap opera that have seemed to flood the movie world. Yet to my surprise, and perhaps luck, I got something else out of this film, something that many artists will appreciate more than one going for entertainment. The Words is a film that addresses the issue of what one would do to obtain their passion and if they would go so far as to steal/cheat their way to reach their dream. While it may seem obvious that one should not cheat, this movie shows that pressures in the world may drive even the most honest person to doing something wrong. Unlike the cheesy, overacted dramatic scenes other dramas choose to do, The Words instead keeps the situation realistic to a pretty reasonable level. Instead of having a wild young couple’s love conquering the struggles and getting instant success, like most chick flicks, New York’s hard knock life actually puts the couple’s fantasy love to the challenge. Yes, that’s right the couple actually has to work out their differences and work on their relationship. As life continues on, the struggles of the real world continue to conflict with Rory’s (Cooper) dreams of writing, despite his passion to write. When the magical manuscript arrives, the choice of turning in the script is not instantaneous as some dramas decide to do. Instead the film chose to show the struggles of using a meal ticket to fame, or to hold onto integrity and pay your dues. This portrayal of man’s internal struggle is relatable, at least it was for me, and thought provoking as to what it could take to break your own morals. As you’ve seen from the trailers, you know what his decision is. Yet instead of then turning the drama into a chase/hide from the law while the protagonist tries to find redemption for his actions, The Words decides to dive into another area that artists will surely grab on to. This idea is creativity and passion that everyone in the world strives to discover. This act of having the Old Man, Jeremy Irons, tell the tale of Rory’s novel, helps to explain how such a feat was created. It’s during this tale that a mixture of drama, romance, and inner journey was well crafted to keep the movie interesting and still emotionally stirring for me. Rather than filling the screen with montages of romantic kisses, sunset walks, and over emphasized smiling scenes, this movie chose to keep the movie realistic as the relationship buds from friendship to true love. While this occurs, a parallel story also develops as the Old Man’s counterpart begins to discover his desire, which he has to develop. As events unfold, the young man continues to adapt and evolve, which for me was more interesting than any prodigal artist story until the climax of the tale unfolds. Yet for those who do want romance, it is still in this movie, but it is not the sole focus of this movie, which may be a turn off for you. However, no movie can really come to life without actors to play the characters the tale revolves around. I rather enjoyed Cooper’s performance of the struggling artist, as he managed to capture the anger, frustration, love, happiness, and countless other emotions required for the part. Unlike some of his other roles, his character had well written lines that for once weren’t infused with numerous F bombs and cursing. Instead, Cooper actually got have some diversity in his dialog switching from casual romantic banter to soulful speeches about what drives him. Zoe Saldana did a nice job with her role, but her character is pretty one dimensional and has very little use than a tool to drive Rory’s decisions and creative sparks. The other actor that may have made the movie for me was Irons, the man with the gruff voice that is perfect for telling stories. Whether he is on the screen or just telling the story, Irons puts enough emotion into his words to add a little extra emotion to the scene, without overdoing it. For me his voice somehow managed to ensnare me in the story, and the scenes seemed to mirror the emotion he showed. Despite the artistic appreciation of this movie, there are a few characteristics that may turn one away from this movie. For one thing, despite the romance tag in this movie, this isn’t your typical couple cuddle movie. While I do enjoy realistic portrayal and drama, others may be disappointed with the lack of over passionate love scenes most media like to use. The drama in this movie is more about challenging one’s inner character, not challenging a love story. Other weaknesses include some pointless characters, a very predictable ending, some edits to the Dennis Quaid parts, and some rather pointless characters. To summarize this review, The Words is a well done film that is realistic and artistic at the same time. Although I enjoyed various parts of this movie, I can’t say I would recommend this film for a theater visit for most. Instead wait for this well shot movie to hit Neflix/Redbox, then you can enjoy it in the comforts of your own home. My scores for this movie are as follows: Romance/Drama: 8.0-8.5 Movie Overall: 6.5-7.0

What a wonderful movie! Because you can read the summary, I will just tell you our reaction to it. We were lucky enough to receive tickets to a pre-release screening of this moving. We took the whole family, 5 boys ages 5-16, and my husband and myself. Everyone loved it. Even the 5 year old, and that is no small thing. This movie will make you laugh and cry and then laugh again. And the laughing moments range from chuckles to totally surprise you as they burst out of your chest howls out loud. Though we have our boys, we are waiting to adopt a girl, so the theme of parents who want a child that they can’t seem to have, and the theme of taking in a child that you didn’t give birth to and/or adoption really hit home for us. I sat at the end of the movie and cried, and they were tears of laughter and sadness and hope all mixed up together. Even if you’re not interested in adoption, this is really a touching show. I wish Disney made more movies like this. Totally clean, nothing even remotely possibly offensive, and yet it wasn’t just a kid show. It was interesting, engaging, witty. As noted above – good for everyone from ages 5 to 40!

Description

Eric Packer, genial asset manager, sitting in his limo, contemplating about himself and his visions while playing with numbers that represent an immense fortune, behaving almost in an autistic way once he tries to connect with the real world outside. Eric Packer also as the symbol of the small financial elite that rules our planet, arrogant, shameless and above all what’s common and human. What happens when you have all you want? When there’s no challenge, no real desire anymore? When the last goal you want to pursue is, like a real Icarus, to fly so close to the sun that you can’t but let melt the wax of your wings and fall, very deep? This is, IMO, the essence of the story in Cosmopolis, with that difference that the protagonist in DeLillo’s novel caused his downfall intentionally, while the financial disaster we live in the last few years was caused by the megalomania of the 1%. When I first read the novel, I felt confused and a bit dumb too. DeLillo tried to send messages that I didn’t understand at all. Then happened Occupy Wall Street and the pie into the face of Rupert Murdoch, so I gave the novel a second chance. I got hooked by the very complex character of Eric Packer, cold and emotionless on the outside and in his actions, but so vulnerable and lonely once you got to know him better. He’s a very sad example of how far people can go in our society, just for the sake of money. I’ve read the book 2 times more, just to enjoy the countless, thoughtful quotes and one liners, weaved into stylistic dialogues as only DeLillo can pull off. So, why have I written about the novel in a review about the film adaptation of this novel? Because I think that David Cronenberg did a fabulous job in trying to bring this book on screen. As a real master he has chosen to stay true to the dialogues, taking the risk that people, just like me when I first read the book, couldn’t get the meanings of them. He took from the novel what could work on screen and left scenes out, that he thought could disturb or change the mood of the movie. In the first part of the movie, he focused more on the little world of Eric into his limo rather than to shift the emphasis also outside the car. Not that I don’t feel sorry some scenes didn’t make it on screen (the famous street scene at the end) and for me the reality outside, in the streets of New-York, could’ve gotten more attention, but I can see his POV and I can live with it. In this daring exploit Cronenberg made sure of the presence of an excellent cast, with remarkable performances of the supporting actors/actresses for the short time they appeared in the movie. The biggest challenge of course was the casting of Eric Packer, the doomed capitalist, who appears in almost every scene. Once again, David took a risk in hiring Robert Pattinson, but he was confident and he was right. Pattinson nailed this character to perfection. Especially when Eric (as his world) starts falling apart, Rob showed how able he is to bring out the psychotic, insane aspects of human being. This is a movie that makes you think, that can give you an uncomfortable feeling and mirrors what’s going on in some levels of our society. I understand that it is a difficult watch for people who haven’t read the book, that they are disappointed but never was promised that this movie was going to be easy. The biggest issue IMHO isn’t the movie itself but the fact that, in theatre, you haven’t a button to pause and rewind so you can hear the dialogues again and again. Once the words are spoken, they’re gone and I can imagine people reacting like WTH?? Though the movie stands on its own, it can only improve your experience if you go a bit prepared to the screening. With my review, I’ve tried to help those who’re interested enough to give it a try. For those who didn’t understand and by that didn’t like the movie: even Cronenberg and Pattinson didn’t understand the story quite well, but they went for it and created a masterpiece. There’s nothing wrong with not understanding everything. It doesn’t make the audience dumb, it doesn’t make the movie bad and it doesn’t make a brilliant performance less brilliant.

There is no feeling of being lonesome so crushing as being in a room with someone, in a relationship with somebody, when the feeling is gone. This couple, married thirty one years, have discovered this, as some of us have at different times in our lives. Tommy Lee Jones is the husband, marred down in his married life that has dimmed into something he feels will never be bright again. Never expects it to be. Is perfectly willing to plod along through life as is with his anger and dismay at how things have turned out hidden and suppressed. Meryl Streep is his wife, loving and longing to be loved, feeling that marriage should not be this way, no longer feeling attractive or appreciated. Willing to come out of her shell to try for change. Elizabeth Shue, who we don’t see nearly enough of lately, was excellent. I have never liked Steve Carell so much in a role as I did in his part as the marriage counselor, trying to inflate this flattened union. Many, many couples, married for decades will feel parts, if not all of this movie, in a personal way. I go to a lot of films and the number of people in the theater for the showing of this movie was more than I’ve seen gathered for an afternoon in the theater in years. I mean years. That’s how infrequently we have a decent movie with fabulous actors come out, with no filthy language, no gratuitous sex….nothing to detract from a solid screenplay, a story well told and well acted. This one was exasperating, touching, amusing in spots, made you smile, caused you to shake your head…..it has it all. At the end of this film, everyone…and I mean everyone…was smiling, happy that they had come to see this one. Wow. That doesn’t happen often. Perhaps the young people won’t see or appreciate the truth of this film so much, but let me tell you, the young are not the only folks buying tickets to movies. And every person with a few years under his or her belt, married to the same spouse for decades, will understand it and love it!

Christopher Nolan has outdone himself with this one. At 3.30 in the morning, I was tired. Just getting out of it, I’ve never been so awake. Perhaps what set this film apart from his other films was that it had a genuine emotional heartbeat. I felt that this was a flaw of Nolan’s other films – the vision of emotion was there, but it was hollow. In this I bought it. I felt it, hero and villain alike. Christian Bale was typically brilliant as Batman, and I felt that Bruce Wayne was more heavily embraced in this final installment. Bale added emotional depth to the character – a plot point that I think went astray in The Dark Knight – picking up from the development made in Batman Begins. Tom Hardy as Bane was quite simply, terrifying. No longer a dunderhead “enforcer”, but one of the criminal masterminds behind “Gotham’s Reckoning”, coupled with a physical dominance strong enough to send shivers down your spine. Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle defied my expectations. Hands up who was not entirely convinced that that girl from the Princess Diaries could handle an intensely physical role like Catwoman. But here I am, hugely impressed. She added immeasurably to the value of the film. Marion Cotillard fulfilled the role of Miranda Tate admirably, though I suspect this was the most underdeveloped character of the film – though after watching, I can see why. The unsung hero of The Dark Knight Rises is Michael Caine as Alfred. A heartfelt performance that helps drive the emotional content of the film, helping Nolan sell his most well-rounded film to date. Caine’s performance in both presence and absence. Special mention goes to Joseph Gordon Levitt, who is consistently proving himself to be a big player in the Hollywood game. His role as officer Blake felt like there could’ve been more, but it may just have come all a bit much. It was a great performance, and Levitt sunk his teeth into role. If you can, go see this in IMAX. If any film was to sell the format to skeptics, The Dark Knight Rises would be IT. I’m happy Nolan stuck to his guns and shot in 2D. 3D would have been unnecessary. I suppose at this point, I have to turn my focus on Nolan. If he ever reads this… aspiring filmmaker to filmmaker, I’ve never been so envious, jealous in all my life. It’s a film that leaves me floundering, wondering what I could possibly do to get anywhere near this ballpark. Well done. I think an Oscar Nomination is in order. From here, I’m not sure what to expect of the future. Does our imagination carry us forward, or do the studios? Time will tell.

I am shedding my weird, creepy hoody that I hide out with and telling everyone that I am a fan of the Step Up franchise. Yes I’m a little embarrassed and honestly I’m not saying the movies are good but as far as guilty pleasures go they are absolutely divine. With the exception of the first installment which although starred a young sexy Channing Tatum in his first lead role took it self way too seriously to be entertaining. And thats a huge reason why these films work because from it’s superior sequel, best of the franchise and one of the best dance movies ever made Step Up 2 The Streets the movies have found this odd balance off fiery kinetic dancing, likable personalities, overly melodramatic and unintentionally funny performances, ferocious cinematography and hammy storytelling that just works. You laugh, you clap and sometimes you tear up at the clichéd and expected finale. This entry fares better than the last which was still pretty damn good. It centers on “The Mob” a dance group of struggling artists looking to make their mark on pop culture by staging creative dance mobs so that they can get 10,000,000 views on you tube and get a hefty $100,000 prize. (which split between the 50 person team isn’t very much but I’ll let it pass). Anyways he comes in contact with another struggling young dancer whose well not very struggling since her Daddy is a billionaire whose looking to tear down the middle/poor class neighborhood they live in and make it into a huge resort. Enter the film’s interestingly semi fleshed out plot as they decide to change their flash mobs from breezy dance numbers to ones with meaning as they protest “The Man” so to speak. Of course their is some third act drama to cause a downward spiral before wrapping it up in the films inspired finale which was in fact inspired by the classic film The Warriors. The dancing is amazing and for the first time in the series they incorporate different styles of dance such as contemporary and modern to successfully winning measures. Kathryn McCormick of So you think you can dance has some crazy sizzle in the lead when it comes to her dancing but her acting is well questionable in the essence of I’m not actually sure that’s what she’s doing. Slightly more successful and way hotter is MMA fighter Ryan Guzman as the film’s thankfully mostly shirtless leading man. He’s got the body of a Greek god and the talent when it comes to dancing but hey let’s just leave the acting out of this equation. You know there’s a problem when the film’s best performance dramatically is from Peter Gallagher as her over bearing, greedy Father. And watching the two of them together trying to force some type of connection is akin to watching erasers on a desk facing each other. That being said they are hot and very talented when dancing. And when they are it’s fire. And thats basically the film as with the other installments when they try for the drama it’s unintentionally funny and it works in a so bad it’s good way but when they perform you see the kinetic, addictive energy that makes these films so endearing.

Really? 2 hours long and I leave as a worse person for seeing it? Terrible. Please, save yourself from this movie. It is NOT good vs. evil and it does not end well. They couldn’t even decide on an ending. Instead they gave us two terrible endings. If you’re looking for an action movie to get you pumped up, this is not it. I left the theater nauseated. There isn’t a character with a redeeming value. I’m surprised that Salma Hayek and John Travolta had anything to do with it. You would think that by now they would choose movies that they thought were worth while. I guess they’re still only in it for the money, and they know what sells. Weak. This movie blew chunks. Please for the love of God, save your mind and soul and see something that brings something new and positive to this world.

Men, don’t be discouraged from this movie, the trailers make it out to seem like a full on male stripper movie, but that’s only to bring in the female audience. Honestly the stripping scenes in the movie are so minimal, that any kind of job could have taken its place. The drama, and surprisingly comedy, take over this movie completely. Each character was so well developed that I wanted to know more and more about each individual person in the film. This film stars Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, Dear John), Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four, Beastly), Olivia Munn (Iron Man 2, Attack of the Show), Matthew McConaughey (The Lincoln Lawyer, U-571), Matt Bomer (In Time, White Collar), and Gabriel Iglesias (Comedian). In Magic Mike, Mike (Channing Tatum) takes a younger person, Adam (Alex Pettyfer), under his wing and teaches him the way to make easy money, pick up chicks, and have a great time. The only reason why Mike actually does stripping is so that he can save a bunch of money and do what he really loves. With a bunch of set backs and drama related issues in his way while teaching Adam, the movie keeps you entertained from start to finish. The performances in this movie were down right amazing. Channing Tatum has lately just getting better and better with every film that he has been in. His character in this film is so deep and interesting that you can’t help but want to know more about him. I can mainly say that for all the actors as well because every character is so well developed and so deep that you really get invested into this movie. This is hands down one of my favorite films this year. Steven Soberbergh is such a great director, making yet another masterpiece. Rating: 8/10 Thank you for reading my review, any feedback is greatly appreciated!

An unending, melancholy tone permeates the entire film, once again demonstrating Steve Carell’s knack for that typical, sad, lonely character he always assumes (when he’s not the cocky, ignorant, inconsiderate “Michael Scott” persona). But unlike Dan in Real Life or Little Miss Sunshine, there are few ups and downs – the role isn’t nearly dynamic enough for audiences to invest in the somber development that keeps his plight from being emotionally involving. Similarly, Keira Knightley goes through the motions of being an unlikely companion without a convincing connection that could warrant their cross-country pilgrimage to find meaning in a world coming undone. Dodge Petersen (Steve Carell) still goes to work each day at Metropolitan Consolidated Life Insurance, even though a 70-mile-wide asteroid named “Matilda” has just annihilated space shuttle Deliverance, the last remaining hope for saving Earth from certain doom. The countdown has begun: 21 days before the world ends. Many resort to abandoning hope, participating in carefree orgies of food and sex, or spending their final hours with family and friends. Penny (Keira Knightley) has missed her last opportunity to fly home and so laments outside Dodge’s window. The two strike up a friendship and decide to embark on an odyssey to reunite Dodge with his high school sweetheart – a reconciliation botched by Penny retaining a misdelivered letter for Dodge. They’re also accompanied by a randomly deserted dog dubbed “Sorry” – a witty moniker never fully utilized. It’s sometimes touching and undeniably soothing to see the obvious counterparts come to a romantic fruition, even if the casting choices don’t appear completely compatible. Perhaps it’s the age difference, or the contrasting personalities, or witnessing brief, unfulfilling assemblies of Penny’s past admirers that seem probable yet discordant. Or maybe it’s Dodge’s admirable yet clashing sacrifices for love that suggest contrivance and an expected resolution. Regardless, a deeper association with the lead duo is elusive, what with the pervasive reminiscing, brooding, and irrational behaviors that are never delirious enough to be funny. Serenity arises, but not as repeatedly as bewilderment from the scenario. This setting, with citizens either rioting, killing, offing themselves, contradictorily mowing the lawn as if to forget, or stocking bomb shelters for apocalyptic survival, is both the most unique element and the film’s undoing. Ceding appeasement for an eye-opening twist essentially ruins the normal romantic comedy hiding beneath the frantic premise. And it’s toned down to a degree, materializing less anarchy and chaos than might be expected (infidelity, rape and theft become a casual joke) if the situation were real – yet the shock of suicide and death still work their way into the picture. Enlightenment, a day at the beach, and reconnecting with loved ones can’t mask the nerve-wracking, spontaneous nature of encountering bizarre strangers and frequenting eerily abandoned houses. At times it’s more disturbing than humorous or romantic. Why should this bleak device interfere so tragically with a simple tale of recognizing the importance of truly worthwhile relationships?

Some people will argue that 80’s nostalgia needs to die. The music, the clothes, the entertainment, the hair. Some people just want to forget it all. I, for one, love the 80’s nostalgia. I love 80’s music, 80’s movies, 80’s cheese. It’s endlessly entertaining. So, when someone took all this and wrapped it up in a musical, it was definitely something that piqued my interest. Sadly, I missed the stage production, but with the movie came a chance to see one of Broadways biggest hits in the new millennium. Sadly, it doesn’t quite stand up there with the best movie musicals and the results are mixed. Certainly, this is a fun movie, if you enjoy this sort of thing. There are good musical choices here, hilarious performances, and enough cheese to make a 50 pound pizza. But the film misses in certain key areas. For one, much of the music is performed poorly. There are some surprisingly good voices here in the leads and even in Tom Cruise, but the film would have seemed to benefit from some legitimate Broadway stars, perhaps even the ones who put on the Broadway musical instead of stuffing it with big name stars. In the acting department they all do a fine job, Tom Cruise in particular, who once again seems to be having wild fun as the big rock star Staci Jaxx. His performance saves the movie from the others, which tend to remain mostly ho-hum. The biggest problem the film suffers from is the pacing. It feels rushed as we move from musical piece to musical piece. Granted, it’s already a long movie at just over two hours, but the film feels so much like a musical that some of the enjoyment from the songs are is lessened. The performances are funny and kitschy enough that you can have fun, but the songs come out so erratic that you just can’t have as much fun. I also have to ask Hollywood for one thing: please stop putting Catherine Zeta Jones in musicals. Her performance here is by far the worst. When she sings, you almost feel embarrassed for her. Certainly she’s funny, but more so in the way you’d laugh about your mom embarrassing you in front of other people. I might be a little biased towards this film, since I tend to gravitate towards this kind of cheesy fun, but Rock of Ages sadly misses a chance to capitalize on the fun of 80’s entertainment. Everything about this just falls short. I am sure the stage musical is fun and now have a greater desire to seek it out, but the movie just doesn’t do it justice. This is one movie musical that could have been a lot better.

Growing up I remember never quite liking Disney’s “Snow White”. Yes, the movie was sort of cute, but the heroine was way too sickly sweet in my opinion. Snow White had grace, beauty and kindness, but because of her complete lack of flaws she came across as boring. So I ended up rooting for the evil Queen instead. Universal Pictures’ “Snow White and the Huntsman” was promoted as a movie where Snow White got to be independent, strong and brave. In the trailers you saw Snow White (Kristen Stewart) preparing an army for battle, fighting and yelling. They actually made it seem like they had made Snow White a two-dimensional character that was more than a pretty face. So why did I still end up rooting for the evil Queen? The main problem with the movie is the casting of Snow White. While they never implied that Snow White actually is fairer than the Queen (Charlize Theron) physically – they emphasized more on her inner beauty and kind spirit – they couldn’t have meant to make Queen Ravenna more sympathetic too. Since Stewart is such a limited actress she has trouble making Snow White likable and relatable, mainly because of her mannerisms (eye-rolling, mouth-breathing, monotone voice). Theron however is a nuanced actress that conveys every single one of Ravenna’s personality traits and feelings effortlessly. There have been criticisms of her over-acting, but I felt like the character was supposed to be dramatic and Theron’s performance captured that perfectly. She makes Ravenna a tragic but heartbreaking portrait of a woman too obsessed with youth and beauty for her own good (there is a very sad back-story of how she came to be as obsessed with beauty as she is.) Story-wise the movie doesn’t stray far from the classic fairytale. The story of how Snow White’s mother dies and her father then remarries a beautiful but evil woman has remained intact. The part where the evil queen has a huntsman going after Snow White for her heart has been emphasized more with the huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) now becoming an ally/love interest for Snow White. The poison apple, the dwarfs and the prince all make appearances too. But the ending is more of an actual battle (horses, swords et cetera) than in the classic fairytale, and it also needs to be said that the movie has an overall darker feel. Apart from Theron’s performance, the movie’s main strength lies in its visuals. The set decoration, locations and editing are all breathtaking – but Colleen Atwood’s costumes are the main draw. Never in my life have I seen such detailed and beautiful gowns as those Ravenna wears. They add an air of luxury and indulgence to the movie and are a shoe-in for a “Best Costume”-nomination at next years’ Oscars. The music score is fantastic too, and James Newton Howard proves just like he did in “The Hunger Games” what a great composer he is. Overall “Snow White and the Huntsman” could use a better lead actress and some cutting (the middle part of the movie feels dragged out) but remains an entertaining, adventurous film for fans of epic fantasy movies. And fans of Charlize Theron shouldn’t miss it for the world – she proves that she is not only the fairest of them all but one of the best actresses in contemporary Hollywood.

The thing that I enjoy most about Wes Anderson films is that they each feel like a great adventure and in this sense I think Moonrise Kingdom is his best yet. It tells that tale of Sam, an orphan on scout camp, and Suzy, a misunderstood girl, as they run away together. At first I found the two actors playing the kids to be kind of limp but after a few minutes I warmed to them and I actually think they were both pretty good overall, particularly Jared Gilman who plays Sam and even more so knowing that it’s the first acting he’s ever done. The rest of the cast are all pursuing or helping them in some way and there a couple of sub-plots with the island’s policeman (played by Bruce Willis) and the parents of Suzy (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand). I thought that the rest of the cast was great. In fairness I am a bit biased because I love Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis and Frances McDormand but even so I have to say that they were all really good, especially Edward Norton who plays the scout master, and Bill Murray. There are also a couple of minor roles for Jason Schwartzman, Harvey Keital and Tilda Swinton who were also a lot of fun. Everyone in the cast fits into their role really well which is obviously exactly what you want, but not only is that the case for the main roles but also for the less important ones, like the scout troupe (especially Sam’s ‘enemy’), Suzy’s three brothers or the oddball narrator. Cinematography wise I didn’t think this movie was particularly spectacular, especially in comparison to other Wes Anderson movies like ‘The Life Aquatic’ or ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’. There were a couple of shots that were cool though, some really long zoom outs (which sounds clichéd but it worked) and the doll house type ones that I love and think are awesome. I wouldn’t expect to wet your pants laughing at any moment in ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ but it is funny. There are a couple of laugh out loud moments and as a whole the jokes are pretty sharp and intelligently done. The reason I like the humour in this movie is that it’s a part of the ambiance and feel of it, it won’t make you crack up but it will make you have a smile on your face for pretty much the whole thing and leave you feeling strangely happy. That kind of ambiance is really why the movie is so good, and is possibly Wes Anderson’s best movie. The whole story is this fantastic blend of reality and child-like dreaming and it’s wonderful. At times I felt kind of nostalgic and sad that I’m not a kid anymore. On the other hand it feels like a tribute to those myths and dreams of being a child and it works so well. This is the kind of film that I feel I could watch over and over again, each time spotting something new but also feeling good and enjoying the overall purpose.

It’s not because I’m French that I appreciated this movie which I’ve seen twice. Too give the really infamous appreciation of the reader from Toronto to the French public, qualifying us of a segregationist country is difficult to gulp especially coming from north America which has not a very glorious past on the matter even in recent years. Perhaps the commentator should see the movie “The help” to refresh his memory… But what I’d like to say here apart of praising the fabulous interpretation of both leading actors is to remind that this is a true story, it did not come out from the directors and scriptwriter heads. Philippe Pozzo Di Borgo born in 51, got a dramatic para-glider accident in the French Alps in 1993 being totally deprived of movements from the base of his neck to the tip of his feet. 3 Years later his wife died and he was helped out of his depression by Abdel Sellou his life-aid assistant. He published his terrible story in 2001 under the title “the second breath” (in French “Le second soufflé”). The directors have had the compliments of Di Borgo for the way they adapted his story. If in any way this was biased he would never had accepted the film to be left in that state. The Di Borgo family is a very old and wealthy family whose origins goes far back in the history of France, and their residence in Paris is considered to be one the jewels of the capital at the same level as The Hotel de Sully in Paris. What is shown in the film is exactly what happens everywhere in the world as far as handicapped are concerned: tendency to overwhelm them with pity which is more diminishing them as if their fate is not enough for them to swallow every minute or second each day. The way the racial problem is viewed is properly demonstrated. The police behaves in different ways depending of the color of your skin or your country’s origin and sorry to say North America is a very good example of this so perhaps is not a proper judge on this matter. The authors had the courage to state this straightforwardly. The film shows on the contrary how a man with a very limited education at the beginning, a former convict, is capable progressively to change his views, and find in himself at the same time the good Samaritan aspects and help with humor and punch, his handicapped boss to find a new belief in his shattered life at 42! At the same time the boss demonstrates an open-mindedness which was not obvious to get not only because of his handicap but because of his origins and his wealth at first. Let’s not illusion ourselves on the matter, everywhere in the world few wealthy people would accept to have as an aid an ex convict whichever color his skin should be! It’s a fantastic lesson of tolerance, and friendship. For just those reason this movie would deserve an Oscar or Golden Globe awards.

It’s “New Year’s Eve” in the neo-natal unit; “Valentine’s Day” with a uterus; “Knocked Up” times five. Unfortunately, that’s about the best I can about this film featuring the ups and downs of having a baby. In an attempt to jump on the multi-story, large cast bandwagon, director Kirk Jones (the charming “Waking Ted Devine,” the horrid “Nanny McPhee”) – with the assistance of writers Shauna Cross and Heather Hach (”Freaky Friday”) – give us a few sparkling comedic moments, only to ruin it all with depressing dramatic letdowns and cinema’s most predictable conclusion. Then again, some of the heavier scenes are actually more (unintentionally) hilarious than the lighter ones. And while there is nothing unusual about comedies with dramatic overtones, this movie is all over the map, going from pure joy in some sequences to outright horror and heartbreaking grief in the next one. Like “Hamlet,” the movie suffers from an inability to make up its mind. With a cast featuring Elizabeth Banks (”The 40-Year Old Virgin,” “Man On a Ledge”), Cameron Diaz (”Something About Mary,” “Killers”), Dennis Quaid (”Cheaper By the Dozen,” “The Express”), Jennifer Lopez (”The Back-Up Plan”), Chris Rock (”Death At a Funeral”), Ben Falcone (”Bridesmaids”), Brooklyn Decker (”Just Go With It”), Wendi McLendon-Covey (”Bridesmaids,” “Reno: 911″ TV series), Rebel Wilson (”Ghost Rider,” “Bridesmaids”), Anna Kendrick (”50/50,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”), Rob Huebel (”I Love You, Man”) and Thomas Lennon (”Hot Tub Time Machine”), among others, one figures the humor quotient would rate high in this endeavor. One would mostly be wrong. Plot has five Atlanta couples, Evan (Matthew Morrison, “Glee” TV series) and Jules (Diaz); Alex (Rodrigo Santoro, “Post Grad”) and Holly (Lopez); Ramsey (Quaid) and Skyler (Decker); Gary (Falcone) and Wendy (Banks); and Marco (Chace Crawford, “Gossip Girls” TV series) and Rosie (Kendrick), all of whom are in various stages of pregnancy and/or child expectations. Evan and Jules have hooked up while involved on the show, “Celebrity Dance Factor,” (she throws up on live television after the final episode), and now constantly bicker about whether or not to circumcise the baby boy-to-be. Gary, who was on a fat-loss TV show and children’s author Wendy are now expecting after years of trying, but also discover that Gary’s neglectful, NASCAR driver father, Ramsey, and his young wife are going to have twins. The sad-sack, whimpy, whining son is one-upped by the old man – again. Ad man Alex and professional photographer Holly are looking to adopt an Ethiopian newborn; while Marco and Rosie, who work in competitive food trucks, have a one-night stand. Somehow, all of these characters end up connected with each other, no matter how far-fetched these situations become. And for couples having their first children, there is little chemistry or real love exhibited herewithin. The emotional depth is as shallow as a saucer and just as inconsequential. Most of the yuks here are from Wendy, who wanted “the glow” of pregnancy, but discovers the aches, pains and uncontrollable bodily functions are paramount (her “mother-in-law,” however, seems to have no trouble, at all). A few more – rather uncomfortable – laughs are solicited from Janice (Wilson), Wendy’s idiot assistant (who honestly gets more snickers due to her weight than her jokes, sad to say). The movie’s worst crime, though, is Alex’s association with a group of depressing new dads, including Rock, Huebel and Lennon, who meet at a park each day and spout unwanted and unnecessary advice to him about being a father. Few of these scenes are funny and a running gag of one of the men’s children tripping, falling and being hit in the head with full beer cans, is simply dreadful. A herky-jerky film which lacks a fluid, coherent story, as well as any semblance of pacing, aborts what could have been a much better movie and will certainly give many viewers sympathy and – most likely – labor pains for its 110-minute running time.

Description

The idea of a teenage daughter rebelling against her mother under the guise of gaining independence is compelling. The fatal flaw of “Girl in Progress” is that this idea is not taken seriously until the final act, at which point we’ve been so turned off by the plot and characters that we no longer care. It really is shocking how badly this movie is structured and how poorly the characters are developed; what should have been a poignant and insightful generational story has been reduced to an implausible and inconsistent mess. It starts out at the level of a second-rate sitcom, one that makes the dread mistake of believing the jokes it’s telling are actually funny. It then makes a wild shift in tone and becomes shamelessly sentimental. This is not to suggest that it turns dour and depressing; it simply becomes mechanical, with all the emotional loose ends tied up into neat little knots. Taking place in Seattle, it tells the story of a teenager named Ansiedad (Cierra Ramirez) and her mother, Grace (Eva Mendes), who got pregnant at seventeen, was kicked out of the house by her tyrannical mother, never finished high school, never got married, and now works as both a maid and a waitress in a seafood shack. She talks the talk about going back to night school, getting her diploma, and moving towards a computer career. That’s actually the reason she and Ansiedad moved to the Pacific Northwest in the first place. The thing is, they have moved numerous times in the past several years. And Grace is no closer to starting night school. What’s the holdup? Basically, she has refused to grow up. She has had several men in her life and is currently dating a married gynecologist (Matthew Modine). One could make the case that she’s fun to be around, but she really isn’t there for Ansiedad the way a parent should be. Ansiedad, obviously aware of her mother’s caviler attitude about everything, rebels in school by making inappropriate class presentations. Then her English teacher (Patricia Arquette) introduces to her the concept of the coming-of-age story, and this is the point at which the film goes spectacularly wrong. In learning about such stories, in which a character or set of characters transitions from childhood to adulthood, Ansiedad decides that she has been a kid long enough and that she must accelerate her journey towards maturity and independence. She researches coming-of-age stories extensively, especially in regards to the formula they tend to follow. From that, she compiles a list of life experiences that she must go. She then makes a creative-looking arrow chart and enlists her best friend, Tavita (Raini Rodriguez), to help her cross every item off the list. In following it, Ansiedad proves she knows absolutely nothing about authentic coming-of-age stories. Her methods are cruel, manipulative, dangerous, and quite frankly, stupid. Had director Patricia Riggen and screenwriter Hiram Martinez been aware of this, perhaps this plot device would have worked. Alas, they initially treat it as a lighthearted comedy routine. Essentially, she believes she must go from being a “good girl” to a “bad girl,” at which point she will miraculously come out the other side an adult. On the journey, she will join the chess club, dress nerdy, provoke the mean girl, manipulate her into friendship, start dressing as a bad girl, lose interest in school, catch the attention of the one boy who’s a womanizing jerk, and ultimately lose her virginity to him. She will also pretend to dump Tavita by making fun of her weight and sneak into a nursing home just so that she can claim sickly old woman as her grandmother. Ansiedad is so desperate to go through these life experiences that she will steal money from her mother, lie to authority figures, and intentionally ruin her reputation. How could anyone in their right minds believe this to be suitable material for a comedy? This is just tactless and insensitive. This story needed to be in the hands of filmmakers who actually understand people, teenagers and adults alike. The characters in this story are about as authentic as three-dollar bills. By the time we reach the final act, at which point it becomes a bit more dramatic, the damage has already been done. We no longer have it within us to like them, or even to invest in them for dramatic purposes. Grace is the subject of a silly and barely developed subplot involving suddenly becoming the manager of the seafood shack and a busboy-turned-waiter nicknamed Mission Impossible (Eugenio Derbez), who can barely speak English but clearly has a thing for Grace. He does something for her, something that largely exists only in movies like this. His promise to correct his mistake is even less believable, if such a thing was even possible. Meanwhile, Grace continues to see her married lover on the sly, eventually figuring out that he’s a sleazebag. We, of course, had figured that out as early as the first scene. If “Girl in Progress” is what counts for a coming-of-age story nowadays, we might be forced to go back to the drawing board. Its title isn’t even deserving of the word “progress.”

I agree heartily with all the reviewers here (except “disappointed”) because this is a GREAT BRITSH FILM for which the critics have not given hardly enough credit. I am glad I didn’t listen to their “disappointment” and went to see it anyway. Sometimes it is critics that are the disappointment! The acting was tremendous. The setting of India was beautiful and perfect. The theatre was full and as most people have already said here, everyone was laughing out loud. It was like a great and funny and cleansing session at a cinema/therapist,that just washed over you, so touching were all the emotions and insights, so real to life ,you could not believe they were acting. I read one newspaper critic who said the characters didn’t have enough depth. Well, no, it was a two hour movie, silly, and what you got was a vignette of 7 real lives, each of them facing the reality of old age in their own way. How wonderful to have a real movie about real issues that addresses them with humour and leaves you feeling uplifted. And how refreshing to have a film by and for the mature and senior members of society. To me the whole idea and effect of this movie is to fly in the face of the Western idea we have of old age somehow being something pitiful, to be feared, and if possible, to be glossed over, fixed up and avoided, so you can remain as young, powerful and appealing to your very last day, as possible. The movie opens up all these ideas to question and I am sure left many, like me, pondering. Why are over 60’s in this country called Old Age Pensioners, when no self-respecting American would allow that? They are “Senior” Citizens over there(note the difference). Why don’t we look after and respect our elders? Why does the extended family work perfectly well in countries like Italy, Spain, Greece, India, but is a rarity here? And who is responsible for ignoring or marginalizing a whole generation of baby boomers who lived through and oversaw one of the biggest transformations in society ever? They were the generation that believed in a Brave New World, and many of them still do. A society that doesn’t value the wisdom and experience of its elders is without foundation.Young and old,”every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the whole”. Go and see this movie and think about it. And take your family. Great stuff.

The first Hollywood film to premiere in India this year, which is quite apt since I suppose audiences in India can appreciate remakes upon remakes hitting their screens every now and then, since different movie regions in India have cross-made their films especially if they are financially successful. This version of LOL is a second generation remake, with the original film made with French actress Sophie Marceau playing the role of Miley Cyrus’ titular role of Lola, before switching to play Demi Moore’s role of mom in writer-director Lisa Azuelos’ 2006 version, who then decided to direct the same film all over again, this time with Hollywood money. I suppose it’s tough getting bored when doing the same project, albeit with a different cast bringing different sensibilities to the table, and of course, being set in different countries allowed for an exploration of the modern / current day teenage trials and tribulations, and see how they would have differed from the very first film. For starters, this is an out and out teenage chick flick, set in high school where topics are rather constricted, ranging from bad grades to boys, to hot teachers and cliques, circle of trust and betrayals, and so on. High schools make for very fertile ground as a story setting, but you really can’t get away from the formula, even if technology from webcams to IM chat sessions enter to spice things up a little Miley Cyrus had a scene involving smoking of drugs here cut out, because a real life shenanigan blew way out of control with the teenage idol hell bent and desperate to leave behind her Disney child-friendly persona of Hanna Montana. Be it having provocative personal pictures making their way online, to recreational drug use or otherwise, the filmmakers probably thought it best to leave behind the negative publicity, and cut that out of the film. Which didn’t do the flow any favours at times, with other less than stellar editing efforts such as a following scene that contradicted what was said before. In any case Cyrus plays Lola, a teenager who opens the film being dumped by her boyfriend Chad (George Finn), and we’d just about know that she’ll fall head over heels with her best male buddy Kyle (Douglas Booth) especially after gushing ad nausem about him and confessing so in her secret diary. But the road to true romance is always a bumpy ride, so you can bet your last dollar it has to deal with misunderstandings which led to temporal breakups and the like, not to mention falling school grades all over the shop make school life quite the bane to a relationship. Kyle too has issues with his dad’s frowning upon his musical CCA, but since this is a chick flick, who really cares about the male characters anyhow, except when they fail to pout and look hot. Subplots in the film that pad it up include a focus on Lola’s best friend Emily (Ashley Hinshaw), who has the hots for her math teacher (Austin Nichols) with dream boat looks, and is the female equivalent of a Stifler or that obligatory rude, shock jock in any teenage sex comedy, and of course, Mom Anne, which the film splits 50-50 with her own relationship, being unable to move on from the husband (Thomas Jane) she divorced, and being at the crossroads to begin one with a rather persistent cop James (Jay Hernandez). Plus the dynamics between mother-daughter getting the highlights and focus as well, between Anne and Lola where sometimes they drive each other nuts, only to always inherently realize blood runs thicker than water. LOL, after so many iterations, came off as flat and offered little surprises to fans of such films, who lap it up only because of a different cast. It’s the usual chick flick dealing with rudimentary issues for its formula, which in real life may not even be issues at all. It’s mildly amusing with nary a class act from anyone in their delivery, and perhaps it’s that generation gap that’s fast driving a wedge between myself and issues brought up in the film which may seem like a big deal for one growing up. Surely it’s a coming of age tale, but I’m not getting it, nor am I the right demographic targeted to begin with.

After seeing two of this weeks other not-so-happy releases ‘Rabbit Hole’ and ‘Brighton Rock’ back-to-back I was looking forward to a bit-of-fluff rom-com but bloody hell that is not what I got. I don’t know if it’s because of the overly happy looking marketing or the lack of overall promotion but the people behind ‘A Little Bit of Heaven’ have kept it quiet for a reason, granted it’s pretty funny but really depressing. Tears started falling about 20mins in and didn’t stop until after I got home. I complained the other day that Kate Hudson never seems to do anything with substance these days I take it all back now. Her heartfelt and convincing portrayal of Marley Corbett a young 30- something with a successful career, great mates and who seems to have it all figured out certainly has substance. Marley admits she can be a bit of a slut, she’s aware that she lives more like a 20-something and she doesn’t care. Until one day it all falls apart – she’s told she’s got cancer of the colon (there are a few unnecessary medical scenes involving a colonoscopy. and those who have needle phobia – take a scarf to hide behind) and that it’s not curable. After a quick visit upstairs to see God , (this time not Alanis Morissette or Morgan Freeman but instead we have Whoopi Goldberg taking on the job) Marley suddenly realises that she needs to change her priorities and as could only happen in movie world or in an episode of ER, in walks a dashing Dr (Bernal), a man who couldn’t tell a joke if his mother’s life depended on it who finds Marley’s overwhelming but fun personality intoxicating and infectious. Not the usual boy meets girl story but it works – sorta and so a romance blossoms despite the fact that she’s a dying woman. A tad sick? Yes but go with it. The rest of the film is Marley rapidly changing and getting more ill, now it’s not as depressing as ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ but it’s not far off. When Queen Latifah took a stab at playing a woman with the big c she went on an extravagant holiday and it was all pretty annoying. Kate’s film is more honest and as we watch her friends and family rally round her (even ordering her a mini-hooker in the form of Peter Dinklage to lift her spirits)) and help as you would expect in normal life you actually care about her awful situation. The casting at first seems odd, Gael García Bernal already proved that he doesn’t act romance well in ‘Letters to Juliet’ so why try again here? Kathy Bates is great as always and Lucy Punch as the mad-cap friend (no change there then) is a nice compliment to Hudson. It’s a thoughtful and thought provoking film, anyone with a heart will leave the cinema wanting to tell their friends that they love them. Just take tissues.

MOTHER’S DAY – CATCH IT ( B+ ) Ever since I heard that gorgeous & brilliant Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood) has been signed on to do a thriller called “Mother’s Day” I was anxiously waiting for its release. Finally last week I got hold of Mother’s Day and trust me it was more than my expectations. It’s not like common violent movies which start with blood & gore. The gore in the movie increases as the situation in the movie gets worse & worse. Director got the perfect cast to play “The Koffins”, who invade in a house thinking their mother still lives there and hostage 8 people in the basement. The Koffins are brutal and would do anything to get what they want. Rebecca De Mornay as monstrous mother is powerful & ruthless at her heart. Patrick Flueger as eldest Koffins brother is impressive along with crazy angry Warren Kole. Matt O’Leary is shown being shot & Deborah Ann Woll did a good job as crazy isolated Koffins sister. Among the hostages the girls by far stand out from Jaime king to Briana Evigan, Kandyse McClure, Lisa Marcos & Jessie Rusu everyone did a fantastic job. Among the boys Frank Grillo and Shawn Ashmore did a great job. Alexa Vega & A.J Cook cameo was Okay it was like a “SAW touch”. Overall a Mother’s Day is a perfect movie to watch & enjoy on your Weekend.

Meeting Evil could be very vaguely described as “Changing Lanes with more carnage”. I’m not sure why this film went straight-to-DVD. It’s probably because the plot is a tad all over the place. Sometimes it’s hard to understand Luke’s actions and Sam’s intentions. Some viewers may find this frustrating while others will simply consider it to be part of the fun. On the plus side, it’s quite fast paced. You’re barely 5 minutes into it before Sam pounds on Luke’s front door and the thrills begin. Sam Jackson is quite clearly having a field day as the full-blown psycho who despises people with a lack of common courtesy. Luke plays the hero/victim and his character isn’t exactly likable, but hopefully you’ll be able to relate to him in some small way. He claims to be a nice guy and he’s obviously accustomed to people treating him like a doormat. He’s cheating on his wife… but then again she’s cheating on him too. By the end of the film I still wasn’t sure which one of them cheated first. They might’ve explained it when I tuned out for several seconds. I’d never heard of Leslie Bibb who portrays the no-nonsense wife and she gave a good performance so she’s officially on my radar now. I originally intended on giving this film 6 stars but when I think about it, I found myself empathising with Luke’s character and hoping that either Luke or Leslie would lay their vengeance upon Sam at the climax. On that level it worked for me but if anything, that’s just a testament to Sam’s performance. If you’re in the mood for a thriller and you can’t find anything that tickles your fancy, you might as well let Sam Jackson take you for a ride. Let’s face it, he RARELY steers us in the wrong direction. It also helps if you consider yourself to be a fan of Luke Wilson. If you hate him, you’ll probably find this film to be average at best. I very much doubt it will change your opinion of him as an actor or a human being.

The concept and story I love. But the way the story was told, shot and some of the acting I was not impressed with. I felt the cinematography was off in that they spent way too much time giving us those “longing” shots of beautiful sunrises or sunsets, all a bit reminiscent of A Walk to Remember. The love scene I didn’t feel had as much raw passion as I would expect and the chemistry was very dry. I would add, the interaction between Zac’s character and the little kid, was great. Overall a enjoyable movie but like one of my friends said, “When are they gonna realize The Notebook was the greatest movie ever made, and when will they stop trying to remake it?”

Description

This is a wonderful “feel good” movie that everyone can enjoy. It will be especially meaningful to anyone who has been part of a family when the last child is married off and the parents deal with their adult relationship with each other and other members of their families. It was directed and produced by Lawrence Kasden ( Big Chill, Grand Canyon and many more big time hits ) who also wrote the script along with his wife Meg Kasden . They put together an honest story that showed love, romance and every day comedy in way that most people should be able to relate to and immensely enjoy. They assembled a cast of actors who were able to embody the characters they created in a skillful and very authentic manner. Beth (Diane Keaton) and Joseph (Kevin Kline) are the newly “empty nested” parents as their daughter Grace (Elizabeth Moss of “Mad Men” fame) ,the youngest of their children, finally finds Mr. Right and gets married. Jospeh is a spine surgeon whom Beth acknowledges may have always been a little full of himself but is shown to ultimately be a good guy. Penny is Jospeh’s divorced sister (Diane Wiest) who has found her new love Russell (Richard Jenkins) who is a bumbling guy who wants to marry Penny and open an English pub in Iowa. Bryan ( Mark Duplass) is Penny’s son who is also a spine doctor and has a touching flirtation with gypsy like housekeeper (Ayelet Zurer) of the family’s vacation house in the beautiful Colorado mountains ( which was filmed in the beautiful Utah mountains) . Sam Sheppard is Sheriff Morris who adds further warmth to the already tender story. What we haven’t told you yet is that the story is tied together by a lovable dog – that almost magically appears and then disappears ! The movie is the story about the search for the dog which occurs while the characters are finding themselves and their own bearings. The story is just right at 103 minutes . The acting is perfect-Diane Keaton is at her mature best, the country type music hits the spot and the film features a a dog! How can it go wrong?
