As a massive film fan, my tastes are very wide-ranging, but I do have a problem with musicals. Nevertheless I was happy to take the opportunity of a private viewing of “Les Misérables” at the London office of distributors Universal – the day after the London première and a month before the UK release – because of the outstanding success of the original stage show (a run of 27 years with a total audience of over 60 million) and the surprising and impressive cast list (Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne). The showing was introduced by producer Eric Fellner of Working Title who underlined the commercial challenge of making a film in which all the dialogue is sung and the themes are so political and praised director Tom Hooper (”The King’s Speech”) for his insistence that every take was sung live. The two main characters are presented in the opening seconds of a sweeping introductory sequence: the police inspector Javert (Crowe) and the prisoner 24601 Jean Valjean (Jackman) in post-revolutionary France. There follows over two and half hours with barely a spoken word which will not appeal to all cinema-goers, but the production is a triumph with Cameron Mackintosh’s musical opened up by dramatic shooting on Pinewood’s brand new Richard Attenborough stage and some historic English locations. If Crowe and especially Jackman are excellent, Hathaway – who lost 25 pounds and most of her hair for the role – is outstanding as the destitute Fantine and Cohen and Carter almost steal the show as the comical Thénardier innkeepers. I’m not sure how long it will take for “Les Misérables” to recoup its investment cash- wise, but it’s going to win award after award and rightly so.

Description

“Pitch Perfect” is kind of like taking “Glee” and putting it into a college environment, but is more like mixing the popularity of “Bridesmaids”-styled humour and the popularity of a cappella singing. The Barden Bellas are a struggling all-girl singing group trying to succeed with female pop songs from yester-year and showing off their bikini bodies, but after an on-stage meltdown, the team is left with two high-strung seniors and is forced to rebuild. Beca (Anna Kendrick) is an aspiring DJ with no interest in campus life, but after a deal made with her father (a small but good role by John Benjamin Hickey), Beca considers joining the Bellas. Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), who calls herself Fat Amy so twig bitches like the Bella leaders don’t call her that behind her back, is not what Aubrey (Anna Camp) and Chloe (Brittany Snow) have in mind to rebuild the group, but she can match pitch perfectly. What makes “Pitch Perfect” a good movie is the supporting characters. Fat Amy is a fully-realized character where everything she does and everything she says matches what we have come to know about her. Stacie (Alexis Knapp) and Cynthia Rose (Ester Dean) have even less screen time, but are almost just as complete of characters. Amy, in particular, is hilarious and provides all of the humour in the movie. The lead characters aren’t nearly as well thought-out. Aubrey is a screeching, high-maintenance control freak, one-dimensionally so, and her few moments of humour are very low quality and very poorly realized (her aforementioned on-stage meltdown is almost laughably bad it’s so poorly edited). Chloe, unfortunately, has a very simplistic role as Aubrey’s only sidekick who also shares Beca’s vision. Snow is a better actress than that. As the Bellas are trying to find their groove as the competition regionals and finals approach, Beca has met a boy who belongs to their all-male rivals. Jesse (Skylar Astin) is cute and extremely likable (an actually very impressive feat considering he got in over his quirky but cute roommate). Jesse aspires to create movie scores (yet another excellent character trait), and through his friendship with Beca, hopes to introduce her to some of the classics. All movies, as Beca complains, are predictable. You know that the boy is going to get the girl and you know what is going to happen before it happens. Jesse says that doesn’t matter because the perfect music can still move you to tears. His prime example is “The Breakfast Club”. Of course “Pitch Perfect” was predictable, and while that might drag during some of their early competition performances, the predictability works for the type of movie it is. Sometimes the comedic dialogue went too far for a joke, other times the humour was just a cheap gag, but overall it was still funny. With better, more original comedy it could have been a very good movie. Beca and Jesse made a great on-screen couple and had the audience cheering them on. In fact, “Pitch Perfect” works very well as a romantic comedy with a non-romantic primary storyline.

I am shedding my weird, creepy hoody that I hide out with and telling everyone that I am a fan of the Step Up franchise. Yes I’m a little embarrassed and honestly I’m not saying the movies are good but as far as guilty pleasures go they are absolutely divine. With the exception of the first installment which although starred a young sexy Channing Tatum in his first lead role took it self way too seriously to be entertaining. And thats a huge reason why these films work because from it’s superior sequel, best of the franchise and one of the best dance movies ever made Step Up 2 The Streets the movies have found this odd balance off fiery kinetic dancing, likable personalities, overly melodramatic and unintentionally funny performances, ferocious cinematography and hammy storytelling that just works. You laugh, you clap and sometimes you tear up at the clichéd and expected finale. This entry fares better than the last which was still pretty damn good. It centers on “The Mob” a dance group of struggling artists looking to make their mark on pop culture by staging creative dance mobs so that they can get 10,000,000 views on you tube and get a hefty $100,000 prize. (which split between the 50 person team isn’t very much but I’ll let it pass). Anyways he comes in contact with another struggling young dancer whose well not very struggling since her Daddy is a billionaire whose looking to tear down the middle/poor class neighborhood they live in and make it into a huge resort. Enter the film’s interestingly semi fleshed out plot as they decide to change their flash mobs from breezy dance numbers to ones with meaning as they protest “The Man” so to speak. Of course their is some third act drama to cause a downward spiral before wrapping it up in the films inspired finale which was in fact inspired by the classic film The Warriors. The dancing is amazing and for the first time in the series they incorporate different styles of dance such as contemporary and modern to successfully winning measures. Kathryn McCormick of So you think you can dance has some crazy sizzle in the lead when it comes to her dancing but her acting is well questionable in the essence of I’m not actually sure that’s what she’s doing. Slightly more successful and way hotter is MMA fighter Ryan Guzman as the film’s thankfully mostly shirtless leading man. He’s got the body of a Greek god and the talent when it comes to dancing but hey let’s just leave the acting out of this equation. You know there’s a problem when the film’s best performance dramatically is from Peter Gallagher as her over bearing, greedy Father. And watching the two of them together trying to force some type of connection is akin to watching erasers on a desk facing each other. That being said they are hot and very talented when dancing. And when they are it’s fire. And thats basically the film as with the other installments when they try for the drama it’s unintentionally funny and it works in a so bad it’s good way but when they perform you see the kinetic, addictive energy that makes these films so endearing.

If you go into this movie as a fan of Katy Perry, you’ll love it. If you don’t like her at all, you won’t like the movie. Plain and simple. As a fan of Katy Perry, I juggled with the idea of actually paying money to see this in the theater because I wouldn’t say I’m a hardcore fan. But I decided I would go to experience the 3D effects. The 3D did not disappoint. It added a dimension to some of the concert scenes making the atmosphere fun and bubbly. The concert scenes were mixed in with behind the scenes looks at what goes into being Katy Perry. Now if you are not a huge fan of her, you probably won’t want to see the movie. It does give a really personal and at times, tragic, look into super stardom. And at the end of the movie you might find yourself liking Katy more. Overall, it really is a film for fans. Nothing more, nothing less.

Some people will argue that 80’s nostalgia needs to die. The music, the clothes, the entertainment, the hair. Some people just want to forget it all. I, for one, love the 80’s nostalgia. I love 80’s music, 80’s movies, 80’s cheese. It’s endlessly entertaining. So, when someone took all this and wrapped it up in a musical, it was definitely something that piqued my interest. Sadly, I missed the stage production, but with the movie came a chance to see one of Broadways biggest hits in the new millennium. Sadly, it doesn’t quite stand up there with the best movie musicals and the results are mixed. Certainly, this is a fun movie, if you enjoy this sort of thing. There are good musical choices here, hilarious performances, and enough cheese to make a 50 pound pizza. But the film misses in certain key areas. For one, much of the music is performed poorly. There are some surprisingly good voices here in the leads and even in Tom Cruise, but the film would have seemed to benefit from some legitimate Broadway stars, perhaps even the ones who put on the Broadway musical instead of stuffing it with big name stars. In the acting department they all do a fine job, Tom Cruise in particular, who once again seems to be having wild fun as the big rock star Staci Jaxx. His performance saves the movie from the others, which tend to remain mostly ho-hum. The biggest problem the film suffers from is the pacing. It feels rushed as we move from musical piece to musical piece. Granted, it’s already a long movie at just over two hours, but the film feels so much like a musical that some of the enjoyment from the songs are is lessened. The performances are funny and kitschy enough that you can have fun, but the songs come out so erratic that you just can’t have as much fun. I also have to ask Hollywood for one thing: please stop putting Catherine Zeta Jones in musicals. Her performance here is by far the worst. When she sings, you almost feel embarrassed for her. Certainly she’s funny, but more so in the way you’d laugh about your mom embarrassing you in front of other people. I might be a little biased towards this film, since I tend to gravitate towards this kind of cheesy fun, but Rock of Ages sadly misses a chance to capitalize on the fun of 80’s entertainment. Everything about this just falls short. I am sure the stage musical is fun and now have a greater desire to seek it out, but the movie just doesn’t do it justice. This is one movie musical that could have been a lot better.

Until I saw “Marley” at the Sonoma International Film Festival last weekend, I knew little about the reggae star but liked a lot of his music. Director Kevin MacDonald was nominated for an Oscar for “The Last King of Scotland,” the excellent film about Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. MacDonald won an Oscar for the documentary “One Day in September.” He has directed a number of fine films, but none any finer than this gem. This is an excellent biography of a musical genius, who died very young. While he lived, he was a force of nature. What is particularly delicious about this film is the sound. There is a lot of music throughout, much of it in the background, but in the foreground are the people who knew and played with Bob Marley. The Jamaican language makes the film very compelling. There are sub-titles which translate English into English. The language adds so much to understanding why Reggae is what it is. This is a fine film, an artistic achievement and a fitting tribute to a great musician. See it, if you have even a passing interest in reggae or Bob Marley.

When a church choir director dies, his wife, G.G. (Dolly Parton) expects to take over, but the job is given to his assistant, Vi Rose (Queen Latifah). They two become snarky enemies and things get worse when G.G.’s wild grandson moves to town and starts chasing Vi Rose’s demure young daughter. The plot is completely predictable, so how much you’ll like it depends on your fondness for the stars and the R&B church music. I like Latifah and thought she was excellent as the hardworking, lonely mother, but Parton has disfigured her mouth with too many procedures and it spoiled her performance for me. Also, she isn’t convincing at all; she just plays Dolly Parton with a smart mouth. (By the way, everyone starts cussing by the end and there is some hanky-panky which makes this not a family-friendly movie, in my opinion.) Keke Palmer shines as Vi Rose’s daughter; she’s a charismatic actress and singer and quite beautiful. Kris Kristofferson phones in a brief appearance and sings (badly) a bit. The story has the group traveling across country to a big choir competition which made it seem like a “Glee” episode. Will they win? Will they all be friends? Not to worry, of course. The singing was lively and infectiously happy and made up the movie’s best scenes. All in all, this is just an okay movie.

There are very few of us twenty-somethings who grew up without the Muppets. Between Sesame Street, Muppet Show reruns, and videocassettes of the various Muppet movies, we saw these guys all the time. We even had one or two theatrical releases of our own during the ’90s. (My personal favorite of those is The Muppet Christmas Carol, which is still annual holiday viewing.) In recent years, since the very underwhelming Muppets from Space, we’ve seen them pop up now and again, mostly in similarly underwhelming TV projects and in short (yet hilarious!) YouTube videos. I am quite happy to say that, in this newest movie, the Muppets are back in a big way! The movie starts by introducing us to a new Muppet, Walter, and his strangely human brother Gary. Gary has planned a trip with his girlfriend, Mary, to Los Angeles, and he is taking Walter along to visit the home of his heroes, Muppet Studios. They find the studio to be in disrepair, and hear of an evil plot to destroy it. Can the Muppets, and everything we hold dear about them, be saved? To get my one complaint out of the way, I do feel that this movie was a bit rushed in places. I wanted more time with these awesome characters, and it did feel as if they were trying to get from one place to the next a bit too quickly. That said, I spent nearly the entire movie with a smile on my face. These are the Muppets that I grew up with, doing what they are best at doing, with that gently edgy humor at which they have always excelled. While there are some moments that are very touching, it is mostly very funny, with lots of nods to The Muppet Show and The Muppet Movie. While new little Muppet fans should enjoy this, it will be much more meaningful to those who have a history with Kermit and Co. Clearly made with love for Jim Henson and his creations of fur and felt, The Muppets is the most delightful movie I’ve seen in theaters this year.

This movie is about a down and out rock star who learns that he has a 13 year old daughter by a drug-addicted ex-groupie, whom, sadly, he doesn’t remember. (The story has actually been done before in a terrible 1984 movie (the story line of which was suggested by ‘Mick Jagger’ (qv) entitled _Blame It on the Night (1984)_ (qv).) Fortunately, that’s where the similarity ends as this is a much better film, with respect to both writing and acting. All performances are solid and credible and the viewer doesn’t feel (at least as measured by the reaction of the audience at the Tribeca Film Festival) he wasted the price of admission. Ironically, the weakest part of the film is the music: the songs performed are so poor one wonders how the lead character could have become a rock sensation in the first place.

Preview screening on Monday 3 October 2011: I saw the original version of Footloose as a teenager and quite enjoyed it, particularly the music. As a result the film and its soundtrack will forever remind me of my adolescence. I would not have thought 27 years later that I would be sitting in a cinema watching a remake of it but hence I did and thoroughly enjoyed it. Quite a few of the songs from the original movie are still in this version, and while the story is still basically the same the film contains more racially diverse characters (something that was sadly lacking from the original) and a fairly snappy script. The original of course made a big star out of Kevin Bacon in the main role of Ren McCormack, and Kenny Wormald fills those shoes very well. His pretty boy looks and great dance moves will only get him so far but thankfully he can also act. Julianne Hough as the rebellious preacher’s daughter looks beautiful and does an admirable job as Ariel. However it is Miles Teller as Willard, Ren’s friend who cannot dance, that almost steals the movie. Willard’s self deprecating hick southern character is played with much style by Teller. Dennis Quaid as Reverend Shaw Moore is suitably morose as the preacher / father in support of the ban on dancing in the little town of Boton, though I thought John Lithgow encapsulated the character better in the original. Craig Brewer who wrote and directed 2005’s acclaimed Hustle and Flow has done a very good job with this remake of Footloose and the audience I saw it with seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. So cut loose and see Footloose 2011 as it is a very enjoyable and entertaining movie.

This is without a doubt one of the best films of the 2010 Seattle International Film Festival. I have never experienced such an intense range of emotions while watching a film as I experienced while watching this one. From nearly the moment it began, I could feel tears leaking from the corners of my eyes, coursing down my cheeks. Tears of pleasure. Tears of joy. Tears of awe. Tears of sadness and hope and inspiration and sheer delight. I have never been moved by a film as I was moved by this one. It documents the rise and fall of an infamous High School Stage Band and their reunion 30 years later to honor their teacher. But it is about so much more than just that. It is a film about the power of one man, one teacher, to touch the lives of his students in ways that go beyond measure. It is a film about standing up in the face of all odds and coming out on top. It is a film about breaking standards, beliefs, and the norm, a film about being the best that you are, putting your heart and soul into what you are doing, and the magic that that sort of energy and power creates. It is a film that is uplifting, inspiring, amazing, exciting, and joyous. It is a film filled with incredible music, incredible people, and more love, courage, and soul than I have ever experienced in my life… until now.

I have to admit I’m not what you will call a fanatical worshipper of Pearl Jam’s music enough to compel me to watch what would be THE documentary this season with a single session, simultaneous screening around the world where PJ fans will likely already have made a beeline for. Instead, I’m a bigger fan of writer-director Cameron Crowe than the subject matter of his documentary (ok, so this sounds a little bit blasphemous), given that it’s been years since we last saw a Cameron Crowe film hit the theatres, although that wait will soon be over by the end of this year with the release of We Bought a Zoo. Pearl Jam 20 chronicles the beginnings of the band back in the year 1989 where Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard came together after the demise of their band Mother Love Bone, and like all successful bands that came before it, was subjected to recruiting and changing of members until the perfect chemistry was achieved, culminating with frontman Eddie Vedder, with his distinct growling voice, joining the band, and together put alternative grunge music on the radar of music everywhere. Sure there were many others in the same vein since the 90s was the era where this sound had taken the world by storm, with what would possibly be the largest rivals to Nirvana before Kurt Cobain’s passing. You can probably read a lot more details on the band from its Wikipage, and Cameron Crowe’s film digs through large treasure troves of archival footage from television newsreels to more independent, off the cuff capture of the band’s early years, that we get to witness the second earliest band performance ever and plenty of other home made videos that expectedly get pixelated for the big screen. Crowe’s background as a music journalist being a tremendous factor in the crafting of this film, where in lesser hands would have been relegated to the standard talking heads interviews, and to stuff the film with chock full of music videos and live performances from the band’s tours around the world. Instead, Crowe provides the narration, and shares interesting nuggets of information through what would be a largely chronological format without overwhelmingly bombarding the audience with too much information. Being on close terms with all the band members and collaborators also allowed for unfettered access to more intimate and honest interview answers, with the utilizing of milestones in the band’s career to timestamp the feature, including their courtroom lawsuit with Ticketmaster. But with everything crammed into two hours, expect some areas of focus to be skimmed through as Crowe paced his documentary at breakneck speed to cover as much ground as possible, mixing it up quite a bit with comedy, pathos, and allowing the many visuals both moving and static to breathe and tell a story. It’s about the capture of a phase of growing up, where looking around I see folks around my age group (or older) who had grown with the band in the 90s when we were in our teens where music played a large part in our lives, as we shift through the sands of time with the identification of many songs from the band’s discography, where I didn’t even realize that Daughter was supposed to be called Brother initially, and listening to Vedder actually sing it that way during a practice on the tour bus, is reason enough amongst others why fans just have to watch this, and perhaps reminisce the times where they had seen their idols perform on stage during one of the many concert tours done worldwide at the peak of their popularity. And that is if a theatrical release gets secured soon, which I suspect would be the case given the sold out, one off screening. Watch for it!

See her videotaped review here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3SfapHdSVQ Even if you are not familiar with Glee, you will enjoy this movie if you are into musicals or singing and dancing. The movie is a vivacious documentary recounting life-changing experiences from Gleeks combined with Glee cast performances. Watching the entire cast of Glee perform is very entertaining and the 3D effect makes the movie so vivid and life-like. I felt like I was there enjoying the concert! The movie is very high-spirited and gives off good vibes and delivers positive messages such as have self-confidence and it is okay to be different. I like how the movie goes behind the scenes of the Glee cast because Gleeks and the rest of the audience can identify themselves with the various personalities of the characters. The movie has several scenes where Gleeks are interviewed about who their favorite character is or tell experiences about how relating to a certain character on the show helped them pull through a tough time. I recommend this movie to children 7 and up. It does not have inappropriate language, sexual scenes, and is not complicated or difficult to understand for children since there is not much of a storyline. The movie is also rated PG. Glee: The 3D Concert Movie is a fun movie pick to see with friends, but is also an engaging family film connecting both parents and kids through music. The wait is finally over! This movie will be coming out in theaters August 12, 2011.

My wife & I went to the screening of this movie (7/15/10)not knowing a lot about it. We just knew it had country music in it. Not being country music fans we were not sure how we would like it. We both thought it was a great movie. The acting, story & music was excellent.I am not able to go into too much detail abut the movie yet. But will when the trailers are released. I believe you will enjoy this movie greatly! It is hard to compare it with other movies I have seen but I guess you would call it a Drama / romance movie. I think it will appeal to people in their 20’s and up. Maybe a date movie? This movie is NOT just for people that like Country Music. As I stated I am not a Country music fan but came out thinking I would not mind owning the soundtrack. It is a must see when it comes out in Dec. You will not be disappointed

“Burlesque” is probably the most compelling contemporary movie musical that I have ever seen; the score, acting, costumes, and cinematography were executed, impeccably. The film commences in rural Iowa, where we are first introduced to the film’s protagonist, Ali Marilyn Rose, played by Christina Aguilera. The seemingly idealistic and ambitious Ali is determined to leave Iowa and pursue a career in the entertainment industry. After countless deliberation, Ali decides that moving to Los Angeles would presumably promote the advancement of her career, greatly. So, the diminutive Ali packs the relatively little belongings she owns, and heads to Los Angeles, optimistically, anticipating that numerous opportunities await her. Upon arriving to Hollywood, Ali is beset with financial and professional difficulties that unnerve her; she conducts an assiduous search for various jobs, ranging from dancing to bartending, and is ultimately unsuccessful. Inadvertently, a despondent Ali stumbles across “The Burlesque Lounge” and is instantly intrigued. She curiously enters the establishment and is engaged, immediately, by a coterie of dancers performing to a classic jazz number. She becomes completely enraptured, however, when Tess, the proprietor of The Burlesque Lounge, played by Cher, performs a musical number. Now intent on performing at the lounge, Ali accosts a bartender named Jack, played by Cam Gigandet, and expresses her interest in possibly working at the club as a dancer and singer. Jack instructs her to solicit Tess for the aforementioned position. Brazenly, Ali goes backstage, encounters Tess, and indiscriminately mentions that she is interested in working at the club. Tess, taken aback by Ali’s audacity, prompts her to state her credentials. Ali hesitatingly admits that she has an inherent predilection for singing and dancing, albeit no formal training, whatsoever. Tess then appraises Ali, dubiously, and proceeds to prepare the dancers’ costumes for an upcoming musical number. Determined, Ali approaches the production manager, Sean, played by Stanley Tucci, and asks him to be hired, stating that she would be an incredible asset to “The Burlesque Lounge.” Sean informs her that they are not actively seeking to employ any additional dancers. He admires Ali for her zeal and ostensibly attributes his inability to hire her to bad timing. Desperate, Ali unabashedly opts to temporarily assist Jack with bartending duties until the club holds its next audition. Unsurprisingly, Ali auditions and Tess begrudgingly agrees to hire her as a full time dancer. This angers the troubled, intractable, Nikki, played by Kristen Bell, who considers both Tess and Sean impetuous for hiring a fledgling singer/dancer. Ultimately, Ali is venerated and recognized for her vocal talents. Not only does she restore credibility to the once ailing Burlesque Lounge, but she is also credited for being seminal in the decision to make musical performances at the club live. Simultaneously, Tess and her husband Vince, played by Peter Gallagher, are on the brink of financial ruin, and subsequently may be forced to shut the club down, permanently. An astute, cunning businessman, Marcus, played by Eric Dane, approaches Tess and offers to buy both her and Vince’s shares of the club, presumably to ensure that it stays open. However, deviously, Marcus intends to destroy the club, and build luxury high-rise apartments in its place. Tess refuses to sell her shares, even under pressure from her ex-husband, Vince, which precludes Marcus from following through with his plan. This is a tour de force film with incredible characterization; Cher, Christina Aguilera, Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell, and Cam Gigandet delivered convincing, compelling performances. Christina Aguilera in particular surprised me with her emotional scope and comedic timing. This successful musician will definitely be inundated with numerous film offers after the premiere of this film; she has the potential to be a very successful actress. The musical numbers and choreography were spellbinding and entertaining, essentially similar to performances in the movies “Chicago,” “Moulin Rouge,” and “Chicago.” Christina Aguilera and Cher round out the soundtrack with ten songs total-Aguilera co-wrote three original songs and performed five classics, while Cher sings two original songs. Visually, the film is stunning; Steven Antin worked closely with legendary director of photography, Bojan Bozelli, to achieve a chiaroscuro effect, which created for mesmerizing color and imagery. The costumes were also incredibly intricate and tailored for each performer, individually. Burlesque exceeded my expectations. The only reservation I had with the film was the derivative, trite on-screen romance sub-plot between Ali and Jack; it detracts from the amazing performances in the film. With the exception of the latter, though, it is an excellent production that will undoubtedly impress and entertain audiences.

I’m still not certain the “Step Up” films take place in the real world. Dance is so important to the characters that inhabit this plane of reality that I barely recognize it. Is every move a metaphor? “Battling” surely seems a surrogate for a fistfight, while love is manifested with more delicate gymnastics. Context regardless, the seriousness with which they approach their art is unshakable. Conversely, as someone who finds their rhythmic jiving inherently silly— Yes, I saw “Step Up 3D” ironically. My recommendation, however, is anything but. I honestly can’t imagine it disappointing anyone. If you’re a fan (in any capacity) of the previous two films, well, you’re in for a treat. Part three was shot in 3D (as opposed to converted post-production) and looks terrific. The image depth is deep and convincing, and even when the effect is applied as a gimmick, its exactly what a film like this needs. The plot revolves around a series of escalating dance-offs, and I can’t see the ridiculousness of some of these sequences having the same impact flattened. The cinematography is clearly built with glasses in mind; see it in 3D or don’t see it. That may seem a rash proclamation, especially for those who really haven’t come around on 3D yet. But as with Cameron’s “Avatar,” the quality differential between those films conceived and designed for the medium and those that tack it on in the eleventh hour is vast. Plus, the “Step Up” films were always sort of a gimmick. Regardless of whether your interest in the franchise is ironic or legitimate, you’re not in the seat for great storytelling—You want to see some suckas shake it out. A lot of time, that desire is satiated at the expense of clear lapses in logic, and tall caricatures—”Step Up 3D” is no exception. The way these bizarre human beings behave is often as crazy as their dance skillz, and to top it off, the film suffers from Dual Protagonist Disorder. It’s a benign case, but there’s really no accounting for it. We’re introduced to “Moose” (Adam G. Sevani), an incoming NYU freshman who gets swept up in the underground dancing scene, and who may be the last hope for a crew known as the Pirates, whose dance dojo (get this) is in danger of being reclaimed by the bank. Ignoring the readymade plot, we then switch gears, following Luke (Rick Malambri), the dojo’s master, in his quest not only to lead his team to victory in “the biggest battle ever” and score $100,000, but to connect with a mysterious, voluptuous stranger, and become a filmmaker (?). Alternating between the two stories, audience empathy is split, and they each end up with a half share. It works when they’re dancing, or better yet dancing together, but “Step Up 3D” suffers when it tries to bring plot to the forefront. The last half-hour in particular drags when mouths start to move faster than feet. Shut up and dance, you idiots! Nevertheless, you really can’t lose sight of intention here. Of course the 3D “Step Up” isn’t a great movie. It’s easy to hate for all its flashy vacuity, but like I said, it might very well be impossible to be disappointed by. Going through my checklist, I got exactly what I expected, not the least of which was some truly accomplished (re: ludicrous) dancing photographed impressively in 3D. But the most impressive thing about it is that even in snidely seeking it out for my own derisive enjoyment, it delivered. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter why; the point is —It’s fun.

In New Orleans, a young girl named Tiana and her mother are visiting the La Bouff family, where Tiana’s mother is crafting a dress for the family’s daughter named Charlotte. Charlotte is a lover of fairy tales, and Tiana’s mother reads the two the story of “The Frog Prince.” While Charlotte is enamored with kissing a frog that becomes a prince, Tiana finds the thought disgusting. Upon returning home, Tiana helps her Father prepare gumbo. As the meal is finished, her Father tells of his dream to one day open his own restaurant. When Tiana eagerly chimes in that she wants to help, her Father claims they’ll call it Tiana’s Place. Upon seeing the North Star outside her window, Tiana makes a wish, to which her Father explains that wishing can only go so far, and that she has to help that wish along. As time passes, holds onto the dream, even after her Father has passed away. Working two different jobs, Tiana spends almost all of her time working and saving for a place, with little time for friends or fun. One morning, she runs into Charlotte and her father. Charlotte’s father, ‘Big Daddy’ La Bouff, has been named King of the Mardi Gras (for the 5th year in a row), but Charlotte is tickled pink that a visiting Prince named Naveen is in New Orleans. As Naveen is single, Charlotte hopes to fulfill her wish of marrying a Prince and living Happily Ever After, and has invited him to attend a social function at the family mansion. Knowing of Tiana’s cooking skills, Charlotte pays her friend a large sum of money to cater the event. Tiana is pleased, as the money is just enough to allow her to purchase the place to start her restaurant. Tiana contacts the building’s owners and shows the place to her Mother. While her Mother is pleased, she is worried that Tiana seems to have no time for herself, with her one-mindedness regarding the restaurant. At the La Bouff mansion, Tiana shows up to cater the event, and soon, Prince Naveen arrives. Charlotte eagerly goes to him for a dance. However, as Tiana watches her friend, the realtors of the property have also attended the function. Tiana eagerly tells of her wish to sign the papers to the building as soon as possible, but the two men explain that someone else has offered a larger sum, and are planning to deny her the property. Upset and heartbroken, Tiana accidentally makes a mess of her outfit. Charlotte, seeing her friend in need, allows her to change out of the outfit, into a blue gown with tiara. While in Charlotte’s room, she sees the star shining in the sky, and wishes for help regarding her restaurant. As she looks down, she finds a frog sitting near her, that suddenly starts to talk!
