“The Last Exorcism” is presented to the audience in documentary format, chronicling a Louisiana reverend named Cotton (whose faith has ambiguously lapsed) who performs phony exorcisms in order to “cure” delusional people who falsely believe they are being terrorized by demons. Although it’s presented as a documentary, it’s near impossible to take it seriously as being “real footage”, considering the editing appears to be of professional motion picture status, as well as the fact that a musical score is played over many of the scenes. Ha. Alright, so we can’t take it as reality. But how could you anyway? The “found footage” angle died with “The Blair Witch Project”. We all know it’s fictitious. Nonetheless, the documentary angle of storytelling does provide a magnificent point of entry for the audience, and opens doors that a standard cinematic storytelling format wouldn’t. It places the viewers in the center of the terror, and proves effective for a handful of scenes in the movie. Secondly, I’d like to applaud the acting. Patrick Fabian is comical and serious when need be, and he plays the role of the skeptical reverend with flair. Even more notable is Ashley Bell, who brings a genuine innocence to Nell—sheltered teenage girl by day, animal-killing devil child by night— whose childlike purity runs rampant when she’s given a pair of Doc Marten boots by one of the camera women, which appears to be the most exciting thing to happen to her in years. She’s adorable when need be, and even more terrifying when the horror starts to kick into gear. As for the ending of the film, which seems to be the biggest gripe by audiences— I was pleased and disappointed with it at the same time. The twist was original, and the concept was chilling and very reminiscent of “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Children of the Corn”. At the moment of its revelation, I was admittedly unnerved, mostly by the visuals we get of what was happening from afar, and the entire punch in the gut that was the realization of what had been going on the entire time. The last minute (very much drawn from “The Blair Witch Project”) was fairly shocking as well, and the final camera crash was very spooky. Even as a seasoned horror film viewer, I was a bit chilled by it. It wasn’t until I left that theater that I began to notice how hokey it was. Creepy? Yes. Disturbing? Mhm. Believable? Well, sort of, but not really. The film’s plot device teeters on being eerily probable and almost too much to take in after having to deal with other fallacies prior. Perhaps it’s because it all hits the audience within a matter of minutes, but either way, some viewers will find it wonderful and others will leave shaking their heads. I’m somewhere in the middle. Overall, “The Last Exorcism” is a commendable effort, and the first “documentary” exorcism movie I’ve ever seen. The format of storytelling somehow works well with the subject matter, and even though it’s impossible to take as a reality, it is engrossing. The ending of the film comes close to shattering what was built up throughout, but I personally don’t think it quite gets there. In the light of everything, I think it’s swallow-able for some people, though too much for others to commit to. It’s a nice bent on the story, and the concept is extremely chilling, so I have to give it the benefit of the doubt here. It’s a lot more interesting than another “Nightmare on Elm Street” or “Friday the 13th” re-hash. 7/10.

Let me start by saying I am a movie buff. I go to the movies at least 2xs a month & love a variety of films. Takers is a good movie. The movie is basically about some guys who are professional bank robbers. I don’t mean those ones who just walk in & say give me all your money. Professionals who can tap into the video systems, elevator systems, & use a lot of C4. Pretty basic movie to follow. Nothing deep or thought provoking like inception. Just a good old fashion bank robbery story. But this is a review so let me start with the bad parts. 1. Not a lot of character development. While we are introduced to the characters this movie doesn’t spend an hour telling you about the characters backgrounds or doing the cheezy flashbacks to when Ghost (T.I) got shot & sent to jail. 2. Did not really understand why Ghost (T.I) wanted to set up the whole crew when a. they saved his money from the heist he got caught in & b. the only person who betrayed him was Jake ( Michael Ealy). Other than those 2 points I didn’t see anything worth mentioning. I am not one of those people who complain about the camera controls or the lighting. I come into movies with an expectation to be entertained not looking for a technical & mechanical masterpiece. I could care less about the lighting as long as the it isn’t in the way & the story is good. Okay now one to the good parts: 1. There were 2 high famous music entertainers in the story; Chris Brown & T.I. Where other directors would have tried to make them the focal piece of the story & have them in every scene. This director used them as supporting cast members & it played out beautifully. Each had about a 30 min scene where they shined & the story focused on them. Chris Brown (Jesse) had a great chase scene where he is jumping over cars & doing acrobatic flips. Very entertaining. T.I (Ghost) has a very big ending where he is great. 2. Action Action Action. While I know this story has been done a few times this summer in their defense this movie was slated to come out to come out last year but T.I went to jail so it was pushed back a year. So I can’t fault them for that. The action was great. Blowing streets, lots of gun shots, & killing. Just great. 3. Lack of character development. I hate movies that spend 1hr over explaining things. Action movies are about actions. If I want deep character development I will go watch a chic flick. So while I think more character development could have been done, I am happy it wasn’t to some extent. 4. The cast was amazing. Marianna Jean- Baptiste, Idris Elba, Chris Brown, Paul Walker, Matt Dillion & etc all were great. No one dropped the ball. Each character was believable & showed off their talents. So in short… this is a good movie. Don’t go in expecting anything but an opportunity to be entertained & you will love it.

A group of bounty hunters called The Expendables fight pirates and drug lords, and play knife darts on their lunch break. That’s the synopsis, so let’s talk about execution. I think it’s fair to draw comparisons with the recent The A-Team. In The Expendables the plot is less imaginative and more repetitive, with the fellas flying in and out of the island with some Mickey Rourke mumblings in the middle (supposedly to give it emotional core). And the good guys are kind of bland, especially the bore of an action star Jason Statham. The baddies however, mainly Steve Austin, have real character and charisma in this one. I also think Dolph Lundgren steals the show from Stallone, who’s the central character but kind of acting as the coach and not the biggest player. You know a good one liner when you hear one, not when you read one. Much is in the delivery, and the context. With a film like this the screenwriters put themselves in an easy situation by having The Expendables compete with each other, cracking jokes like regular buddies do. I think Terry Crews got the best one with “He says you’re dead in foreign language”. No surprise however, Arnold Schwarzenegger got the biggest laughs just by showing up. The subplot involving Jason Statham and Charisma Carpenter should have been left at the cutting room floor, even the fight scene that came out of it. Yep, shaky cam is involved with most of the action scenes and it sucks most of the time. The fights themselves are mainly good, however. This is the closest to pro wrestling choreography a main stream film has got like ever, with the exception that actual pro wrestling is filmed much better. You see Sly doing a choke slam, and everyone is doing body slams. Someone did a jack-knife power bomb as well. The film like many of its ilk cater to those short of attention span, keeping the camera-work hectic not once having the guts to try if anything that goes on has legs to stand on its own. The end result, in this case, is not as much annoying but so and so. Watching a film like this is an okay way to spend some time, but nothing that goes on rises above mediocrity. Not saying it even tries, by the way. There’s just one more thing – I think Dolph Lundgren would have won the fight against Jet Li.

“Centurion” is a visceral and solid film which combines a simple, yet effective chase/revenge story with a stunning ancient Caledonian (Scottish) landscape and a well established Roman setting that puts such other efforts such as “King Arthur” or “The Lost Legion” to well deserved shame. I found the script to be extremely engrossing and clever in the way it makes the characters of the Ninth Legion and of the Picts that lived over two millennia ago so relatable to a modern audience. The acting of Michael Fassbender as Centurion Quintus Dias and Dominic West as General Titus Virilus are two truly strong male performances, yet shockingly it is the chillingly memorable performance by Olga Kurylenko of Bond girl fame (”Quantum of Solace”) who really steals the show as the silent, violent Pict tracker who will horrifyingly stop at nothing in her arguably justifiable vendetta against the Romans, she is beauty and the beast all wrapped in one. The Scottish scenery used for “Centurion” is brilliant and evokes a haunting frontier land untouched by civilization. If those glorious city scenes of “Gladiator” were to depict Rome in all her imperial splendour, “Centurion” was made to depict the sheer unforgiving fringe of her empire by way of such unspeakable horrors. The staggering first battle scene is definitely my favourite scene in the film and comparisons made to the first battle scene in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” are not unfounded. The brutality of the Romans and the Picts fighting never once holds back as limbs, heads, guts and buckets of blood are shed during the movie; this comes as no surprise from director Neil Marshall, the creator of such respective genre cult classics “The Descent” and “Dog Soldiers”, evidently he is a filmmaker who does not shy away from highlighting the true brutality and horrors of ancient warfare. Fans of “300″ and “Gladiator” will be well at home here and any action film fanatic with a passing interest in history will love the adrenaline fuelled fights and unrelenting chase sequences as this is a film that never gives the audience long to rest during the pursuit. “Centurion” is in my opinion the best ancient epic film since “Gladiator” and all who are on the fence or still haven’t got round to see it should go and watch it. It is well worth your time and money.

And honestly that was my greatest problem from the motion picture was the rhythm of it. It features a good story line but it had been not effectively paced. It had been slow for as well lengthy so since the viewer you would loose interest within the movie. I wouldn’t go as far as saying its the worst cbm ever, but I’ll say it had so significantly prospective and I honestly was truly let down.

“You Can’t Fly A Tank, Fool!” – Sgt. B.A. Baracus I believe in my life I have decided to pen a review of one other movie on this site, but after a continuing summer of letdowns, “Robin Hood”, “Prince of Persia”, I felt that The A-Team deserves all the positive praise that can be given, and is easily one of the funnest movies I have seen in a long time. If you are at all familiar with the director Joe Carnahan’s previous films, you may be aware of his style for inter-weaving characters, but all of whom have the same goal in mind. It became a little frustrating at times to decipher who was betraying whom in this movie, but its all in good fun, and helps to disguise the final outcome. There are a few scenes in the film that play out like deleted out-takes inserted at the last minute to try and add a bit of depth, especially with B.A. and his struggle for inner peace with all the violence around him, or Hannibal & B.A.’s chance encounter in Mexico at the beginning of the film. The part that worked for me was that every member of the A-Team seemed to be cast perfectly. No doubt almost any review will tell you, Sharlto Coopley by far steals the show as “Howling Mad” Murdoch. Quintin “Rampage” Jackson is the other surprise of the film. As someone who is always nervous when it comes to attempting a cross-over, such as Ludicrous or 50 Cent, I can say that Jackson was by far the best choice to fill the shoes of Bosco “Bad Attitude” Baracus. Critics, and reports alike have already begun to see how they can tear this apart. Roger Ebert (Whom I highly respect as a film critic) has been quoted as saying “The characters have the same names, they play the same types, they have the same traits”. Was this not the case for “Star Trek” last year, or “The Dark Knight” in 2008? No doubt there is good reason for skepticism coming from a year bogged down with 80’s remakes ranging from the Karate Kid, to Tron later on this year, and not to mention the fact that it has taken ten years, and supposedly 11 screen writers to pen, and polish the script for shooting. In my opinion, this movie was right on the money.

If you need to enjoy this movie and enjoy it you need to enter into this anticipating the right kind of movie. It is an action/comedy summer date movie. You will have a excellent time. Not the time of your life. It isn’t True Lies. It is not Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Just like Katherine and Ashton aren’t Arnold and Jamie Lee or Angelina and Brad. Here you might have two stars who’re even now building their own careers and finding their way. They are both pleasant to look at. Though you can tell Ashton is less experienced at this than Katherine, he still really does a credible job. Ashton, interestingly in my opinion, plays the action scenes rather credibly (there’s that word again). I did anticipated less. Katherine grows engrossed – just about since you might expect given her character’s foundation. Also it seemed to be basically wonderful to see Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara lending their capable details to this. While I would like the writer(s) had given Ms. O’Hara more to carry out. Therefore, do you want to consider your date to a good movie which you could chuckle and once in a while have a good laugh outright as well as leaving smiling? This film will benefit you. I might offer this a 7.5 but fractions aren’t permitted. So, I rounded it up to an 8. Proceed. Enjoy. You’ll remember fondly the date for a longer time than you can recall the film. Although so what?
