Description

“The Last Exorcism” is presented to the audience in documentary format, chronicling a Louisiana reverend named Cotton (whose faith has ambiguously lapsed) who performs phony exorcisms in order to “cure” delusional people who falsely believe they are being terrorized by demons. He answers a letter from a backwoods farm and heads there with his documentary crew to help an allegedly possessed teenager, Nell. Her father is convinced she is possessed, and is killing off his cattle in the middle of the night. Cotton arrives and performs a phony exorcism on her, complete with staged effects, hoping to leave the family with a peace of mind, and cured of their “demon”. Needless to say, it actually appears something beyond mental illness is striking Nell— something supernatural— a demon, perhaps. The real strength of “The Last Exorcism” is its form of presentation. Although it’s presented as a documentary, it’s near impossible to take it seriously as being “real footage”, considering the editing appears to be of professional motion picture status, as well as the fact that a musical score is played over many of the scenes. Ha. Alright, so we can’t take it as reality. But how could you anyway? The “found footage” angle died with “The Blair Witch Project”. We all know it’s fictitious. Nonetheless, the documentary angle of storytelling does provide a magnificent point of entry for the audience, and opens doors that a standard cinematic storytelling format wouldn’t. It places the viewers in the center of the terror, and proves effective for a handful of scenes in the movie. Secondly, I’d like to applaud the acting. Patrick Fabian is comical and serious when need be, and he plays the role of the skeptical reverend with flair. Even more notable is Ashley Bell, who brings a genuine innocence to Nell—sheltered teenage girl by day, animal-killing devil child by night— whose childlike purity runs rampant when she’s given a pair of Doc Marten boots by one of the camera women, which appears to be the most exciting thing to happen to her in years. She’s adorable when need be, and even more terrifying when the horror starts to kick into gear. As for the ending of the film, which seems to be the biggest gripe by audiences— I was pleased and disappointed with it at the same time. The twist was original, and the concept was chilling and very reminiscent of “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Children of the Corn”. At the moment of its revelation, I was admittedly unnerved, mostly by the visuals we get of what was happening from afar, and the entire punch in the gut that was the realization of what had been going on the entire time. The last minute (very much drawn from “The Blair Witch Project”) was fairly shocking as well, and the final camera crash was very spooky. Even as a seasoned horror film viewer, I was a bit chilled by it. It wasn’t until I left that theater that I began to notice how hokey it was. Creepy? Yes. Disturbing? Mhm. Believable? Well, sort of, but not really. The film’s plot device teeters on being eerily probable and almost too much to take in after having to deal with other fallacies prior. Perhaps it’s because it all hits the audience within a matter of minutes, but either way, some viewers will find it wonderful and others will leave shaking their heads. I’m somewhere in the middle. Overall, “The Last Exorcism” is a commendable effort, and the first “documentary” exorcism movie I’ve ever seen. The format of storytelling somehow works well with the subject matter, and even though it’s impossible to take as a reality, it is engrossing. The ending of the film comes close to shattering what was built up throughout, but I personally don’t think it quite gets there. In the light of everything, I think it’s swallow-able for some people, though too much for others to commit to. It’s a nice bent on the story, and the concept is extremely chilling, so I have to give it the benefit of the doubt here. It’s a lot more interesting than another “Nightmare on Elm Street” or “Friday the 13th” re-hash. 7/10.

Let me start by saying I am a movie buff. I go to the movies at least 2xs a month & love a variety of films. Takers is a good movie. The movie is basically about some guys who are professional bank robbers. I don’t mean those ones who just walk in & say give me all your money. Professionals who can tap into the video systems, elevator systems, & use a lot of C4. Pretty basic movie to follow. Nothing deep or thought provoking like inception. Just a good old fashion bank robbery story. But this is a review so let me start with the bad parts. 1. Not a lot of character development. While we are introduced to the characters this movie doesn’t spend an hour telling you about the characters backgrounds or doing the cheezy flashbacks to when Ghost (T.I) got shot & sent to jail. 2. Did not really understand why Ghost (T.I) wanted to set up the whole crew when a. they saved his money from the heist he got caught in & b. the only person who betrayed him was Jake ( Michael Ealy). Other than those 2 points I didn’t see anything worth mentioning. I am not one of those people who complain about the camera controls or the lighting. I come into movies with an expectation to be entertained not looking for a technical & mechanical masterpiece. I could care less about the lighting as long as the it isn’t in the way & the story is good. Okay now one to the good parts: 1. There were 2 high famous music entertainers in the story; Chris Brown & T.I. Where other directors would have tried to make them the focal piece of the story & have them in every scene. This director used them as supporting cast members & it played out beautifully. Each had about a 30 min scene where they shined & the story focused on them. Chris Brown (Jesse) had a great chase scene where he is jumping over cars & doing acrobatic flips. Very entertaining. T.I (Ghost) has a very big ending where he is great. 2. Action Action Action. While I know this story has been done a few times this summer in their defense this movie was slated to come out to come out last year but T.I went to jail so it was pushed back a year. So I can’t fault them for that. The action was great. Blowing streets, lots of gun shots, & killing. Just great. 3. Lack of character development. I hate movies that spend 1hr over explaining things. Action movies are about actions. If I want deep character development I will go watch a chic flick. So while I think more character development could have been done, I am happy it wasn’t to some extent. 4. The cast was amazing. Marianna Jean- Baptiste, Idris Elba, Chris Brown, Paul Walker, Matt Dillion & etc all were great. No one dropped the ball. Each character was believable & showed off their talents. So in short… this is a good movie. Don’t go in expecting anything but an opportunity to be entertained & you will love it.

After making the woefully regrettable decision to pay money to see “Epic Movie”, I had vowed to stay far away from this movie and any other with the word “Movie” in the title. But, because I am faint of heart and/or an idiot, I allowed myself to be talked into watching a leaked version online because A) it was actually pretty funny, according to friends who had seen it already, B) it was only about 70 minutes long, and C) this Edward was actually hot. After watching it for myself, I would agree on all three counts (especially C….daaaaamn). It’s no great cinematic achievement, but for a devoted Twilight hater such as myself, it was worth a chuckle or two. Sure, “Vampires Suck” meets many of the same pitfalls other parody movies do. It operates under the delusion that anyone out of diapers thinks that a character being bludgeoned over the head time and time again for absolutely no reason is comedy gold. It often relies on stupid pop culture jokes (Look! A Jersey Shore reference! It’s funny because it is a Jersey shore reference!) and unoriginal gross-out humor (it’s funny because you want to vomit! Haha!). But, so help me if I didn’t find myself laughing at the way the film mercilessly mocks everything laughable about the Twilight movies, a series that, let’s face it, lends itself pretty easily to parody. In fact, all “Vampires Suck” really had to do was recreate the first two Twilight films pretty much scene-for-scene, tweaking here and there to make the scenes only slightly more ridiculous than the originals. The result is actually a pretty clever send-up of the ludicrously over-the-top melodrama that Twilight lovers eat up. This film holds a mirror up to pretty much everything laughable about the series that proves that a wildly successful book/movie franchise does not necessarily need a “plot”: the rabidity of its fan base; the shameless parade of shirtless males; the idea that teenage Stephanie Meyer…er, I mean, Bella, would be the object of every hot guy’s lust despite being a mopy sourpuss with no trace of a personality; the insistence that Robert Pattinson is “sexy”. The actress who plays Bella, or “Becca,” as she is renamed, does a killer job parodying Kristen Stewart’s mannerisms (hair-tucking, downward gazes, constant lower-lip biting) by which I mean she mimics them exactly and everyone laughs at them because they are stupid. Mocking Twilight is not exactly hard to do, but I have to say this film does it quite cleverly at many points. I’ll even say that the ending is magnificent. Needless to say, “Vampires Suck” is for members of Team I Want a Boy Who Doesn’t Want to Kill Me only, as I’m sure Twilight fans would not appreciate being forced to acknowledge that the thing they love is dumber than a sack of fruit fly larvae. However, since like I said the movie is pretty much just a re-creation of the original Twilight movies, many of the jokes are best appreciated having actually seen them. So you’ll probably like this movie if you are not a Twilight fan, but have actually seen the movies because A) you were dragged there by a girl whose pants you really, REALLY wanted to get into, B) you were stoned, walked into the wrong theater, and failed to realize that it wasn’t The Hangover until it was too late, or C) you are self-loathing and willingly subjected yourself to them out of morbid curiosity (like me). So if you hate Twilight and everything it stands for, take a break from your violent (yet strangely erotic) fantasies about Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner and go see “Vampires Suck”. It will ease your tortured soul, and maybe, just maybe, restore a molecule of faith in the parody genre. It couldn’t possibly be worse than “Meet the Spartans”.

This is just the feel good comedy of the summer. Soulja Boy plays a kid who wins the lottery but the ticket gets stolen by some thug gangsters. Hilarity ensues as all these people chase each other around the neighborhood trying to get this lottery ticket! There’s even some action in it too! Uh-oh! Look out! Box office smash? I think so! The acting was pretty good. I really believed that these people craved money so badly. I think you should check this movie out “fo’ sho’!” as several of the characters in the movie would say! Great laugh out loud comedy with a lot of heart in the urban setting.

I went to see the sneak preview of this movie last night, walking in with low expectations. I’m not a huge fan of Jennifer Anniston, and the concept sounded a bit low brow…so I went in pretty cynical. I was pleasantly surprised! It not only “didn’t suck” but was actually pretty great. I thought the subject could have easily made this very cringe worthy and hard to believe – and yet it was handled in such a way that it didn’t seem THAT far-fetched (as Hollywood movies go)and the characters remained believable and even sympathetic at times. I LOVED Jason Bateman’s character. He is negative, neurotic, funny and cute all at the same time. Aniston played her role very classy, and did not try to be cutesy or overly dramatic. I rarely believe cute little kids in movies, yet the show stealer for me was Sebastian, the son. This kid is going to be a super star one day if he keeps it up! He is just the right amount of adorable/quirky while never overdoing it. His big brown eyes well up with tears in just the right way (choked me up a couple of times), and yet could deliver ‘quirk’ with complete deadpan expression. Brilliant! All in all, I laughed, teared up, and managed to enjoy every minute of the experience. Is it Citizen Kane? No. But it’s darn good entertainment.

A group of bounty hunters called The Expendables fight pirates and drug lords, and play knife darts on their lunch break. That’s the synopsis, so let’s talk about execution. I think it’s fair to draw comparisons with the recent The A-Team. In The Expendables the plot is less imaginative and more repetitive, with the fellas flying in and out of the island with some Mickey Rourke mumblings in the middle (supposedly to give it emotional core). And the good guys are kind of bland, especially the bore of an action star Jason Statham. The baddies however, mainly Steve Austin, have real character and charisma in this one. I also think Dolph Lundgren steals the show from Stallone, who’s the central character but kind of acting as the coach and not the biggest player. You know a good one liner when you hear one, not when you read one. Much is in the delivery, and the context. With a film like this the screenwriters put themselves in an easy situation by having The Expendables compete with each other, cracking jokes like regular buddies do. I think Terry Crews got the best one with “He says you’re dead in foreign language”. No surprise however, Arnold Schwarzenegger got the biggest laughs just by showing up. The subplot involving Jason Statham and Charisma Carpenter should have been left at the cutting room floor, even the fight scene that came out of it. Yep, shaky cam is involved with most of the action scenes and it sucks most of the time. The fights themselves are mainly good, however. This is the closest to pro wrestling choreography a main stream film has got like ever, with the exception that actual pro wrestling is filmed much better. You see Sly doing a choke slam, and everyone is doing body slams. Someone did a jack-knife power bomb as well. The film like many of its ilk cater to those short of attention span, keeping the camera-work hectic not once having the guts to try if anything that goes on has legs to stand on its own. The end result, in this case, is not as much annoying but so and so. Watching a film like this is an okay way to spend some time, but nothing that goes on rises above mediocrity. Not saying it even tries, by the way. There’s just one more thing – I think Dolph Lundgren would have won the fight against Jet Li.

I’m still not certain the “Step Up” films take place in the real world. Dance is so important to the characters that inhabit this plane of reality that I barely recognize it. Is every move a metaphor? “Battling” surely seems a surrogate for a fistfight, while love is manifested with more delicate gymnastics. Context regardless, the seriousness with which they approach their art is unshakable. Conversely, as someone who finds their rhythmic jiving inherently silly— Yes, I saw “Step Up 3D” ironically. My recommendation, however, is anything but. I honestly can’t imagine it disappointing anyone. If you’re a fan (in any capacity) of the previous two films, well, you’re in for a treat. Part three was shot in 3D (as opposed to converted post-production) and looks terrific. The image depth is deep and convincing, and even when the effect is applied as a gimmick, its exactly what a film like this needs. The plot revolves around a series of escalating dance-offs, and I can’t see the ridiculousness of some of these sequences having the same impact flattened. The cinematography is clearly built with glasses in mind; see it in 3D or don’t see it. That may seem a rash proclamation, especially for those who really haven’t come around on 3D yet. But as with Cameron’s “Avatar,” the quality differential between those films conceived and designed for the medium and those that tack it on in the eleventh hour is vast. Plus, the “Step Up” films were always sort of a gimmick. Regardless of whether your interest in the franchise is ironic or legitimate, you’re not in the seat for great storytelling—You want to see some suckas shake it out. A lot of time, that desire is satiated at the expense of clear lapses in logic, and tall caricatures—”Step Up 3D” is no exception. The way these bizarre human beings behave is often as crazy as their dance skillz, and to top it off, the film suffers from Dual Protagonist Disorder. It’s a benign case, but there’s really no accounting for it. We’re introduced to “Moose” (Adam G. Sevani), an incoming NYU freshman who gets swept up in the underground dancing scene, and who may be the last hope for a crew known as the Pirates, whose dance dojo (get this) is in danger of being reclaimed by the bank. Ignoring the readymade plot, we then switch gears, following Luke (Rick Malambri), the dojo’s master, in his quest not only to lead his team to victory in “the biggest battle ever” and score $100,000, but to connect with a mysterious, voluptuous stranger, and become a filmmaker (?). Alternating between the two stories, audience empathy is split, and they each end up with a half share. It works when they’re dancing, or better yet dancing together, but “Step Up 3D” suffers when it tries to bring plot to the forefront. The last half-hour in particular drags when mouths start to move faster than feet. Shut up and dance, you idiots! Nevertheless, you really can’t lose sight of intention here. Of course the 3D “Step Up” isn’t a great movie. It’s easy to hate for all its flashy vacuity, but like I said, it might very well be impossible to be disappointed by. Going through my checklist, I got exactly what I expected, not the least of which was some truly accomplished (re: ludicrous) dancing photographed impressively in 3D. But the most impressive thing about it is that even in snidely seeking it out for my own derisive enjoyment, it delivered. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter why; the point is —It’s fun.

Adam McKay is not a household name yet, but movie buffs like me know that when he teams up with Will Ferrell, magic happens. The former “Saturday Night Live” writer directed Ferrell in “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004), “Talladega Nights” (2006), and even the popular viral video “The Landlord” (2007). Movies with Ferrell that have not involved McKay have tried to duplicate the success of “Anchorman”, but have failed ( i.e. “Semi-Pro” (2008), “Land of the Lost” (2009)). As director and co-writer of “The Other Guys”, McKay brings the best out of Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, and the rest of the cast. It combines action and comedy better than any similar comedy I have seen in a long time. “The Other Guys” refers to, of course, the detectives who rarely get a piece of the archetypal cops-and-robbers shenanigans that are frequently seen in action movies or on “Law & Order”. They remain mainly at their desks doing paperwork, something almost never seen in movies. Ferrell is Allen Gamble, who is somewhat content with managing case work on his computer, and Wahlberg is the far more forceful and ambitious Terry Hoitz. Their characters are in sharp contrast to the cops that Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson portray in this film (and definitely in other films). Although Jackson and Johnson were also funny here, I hate that the previews gave away their cameos in this movie. It would have been more exciting if the audience didn’t expect them when they stepped into the theaters. Then again, that is the fault of whomever marketed this film, not the filmmakers themselves. When Allen and Terry start working on a case they have a lead in, one they get to before other senior detectives do, a really interesting detective story progresses that would not feel out of place in dramas like “The French Connection” (1971) or similar action/detective movies to that nature. ”When you do a comedy, it does no good to reference comedies,” writer and director Adam McKay told Entertainment Weekly, ”You want to treat it like a drama 80% of the way. Then, at the last 20%, you f**k it up”. The last 20% made this movie work, naturally. More than that, though, Ferrell didn’t get all the funny lines, which is the mistake that many buddy cop movies such as the recent “Cop Out” (2010) make. Wahlberg is as intense as he usually is in most movies, but he has laugh- out-loud hilarious lines that he plays effectively with a straight face. His line about being a peacock may make AFI’s Most Memorable Movie Quote list in the next few years, and the hot water his character got into in an incident involving Derek Jeter (making a cameo as himself) made the audience at my screening cheer. Of course, I saw the movie in Boston, but I’m just saying. However, the 20% of the movie that was funny was further enhanced by the story. Again, many buddy cop movies of recent years that have tried to be “48 Hours” make the mistake of introducing the villain early on, similar to a superhero comic book. This movie has you try to solve the mystery along with Ferrell and Wahlberg, and there are some decent twists and turns that really make you wonder who the culprit is. I will say that the mystery was a bit confusing, especially since it involves a Rupert- Murdoch-meets-Donald-Trump tycoon (Steve Coogan) and some financial plot. As a critic, I could pretend to accurately interpret everything that I see on screen. However, I’m not a Wall Street expert, and numbers involved in trading, stocks & bonds, and all the rest confuse me. Nonetheless, even if you watch this movie not knowing who’s wrong or right and why, you will still love the ride. The closing credits featured cleverly-animated financial facts pertaining to the recent financial meltdown, which appeared to be meticulously researched but still out of place. Their presence reminded me of Charlie Chaplin’s anti-Nazi plea for humanity at the end of “The Great Dictator” (1941). His speech didn’t fit the slapstick comedy of the first 90% of the movie, but looking back, it was still necessary to hear. I feel as though this montage of facts may have the same effect. Overall, though, “The Other Guys” is not just another movie. Some gags seemed a bit out of place, and the tired plot point of the police chief pulling the main cops off the case still seeped its way into the story. However, it helped that that chief was Michael Keaton in what could be a comeback performance, and that he had some hysterical lines as well. The movie tells a great story, everyone in the movie is funny with appearing to try too hard (especially in Ferrell’s case), and the ensemble cast works together perfectly. In a year of mediocre (non-animated) comedies, “The Other Guys” lives up to its hype.

“Centurion” is a visceral and solid film which combines a simple, yet effective chase/revenge story with a stunning ancient Caledonian (Scottish) landscape and a well established Roman setting that puts such other efforts such as “King Arthur” or “The Lost Legion” to well deserved shame. I found the script to be extremely engrossing and clever in the way it makes the characters of the Ninth Legion and of the Picts that lived over two millennia ago so relatable to a modern audience. The acting of Michael Fassbender as Centurion Quintus Dias and Dominic West as General Titus Virilus are two truly strong male performances, yet shockingly it is the chillingly memorable performance by Olga Kurylenko of Bond girl fame (”Quantum of Solace”) who really steals the show as the silent, violent Pict tracker who will horrifyingly stop at nothing in her arguably justifiable vendetta against the Romans, she is beauty and the beast all wrapped in one. The Scottish scenery used for “Centurion” is brilliant and evokes a haunting frontier land untouched by civilization. If those glorious city scenes of “Gladiator” were to depict Rome in all her imperial splendour, “Centurion” was made to depict the sheer unforgiving fringe of her empire by way of such unspeakable horrors. The staggering first battle scene is definitely my favourite scene in the film and comparisons made to the first battle scene in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” are not unfounded. The brutality of the Romans and the Picts fighting never once holds back as limbs, heads, guts and buckets of blood are shed during the movie; this comes as no surprise from director Neil Marshall, the creator of such respective genre cult classics “The Descent” and “Dog Soldiers”, evidently he is a filmmaker who does not shy away from highlighting the true brutality and horrors of ancient warfare. Fans of “300″ and “Gladiator” will be well at home here and any action film fanatic with a passing interest in history will love the adrenaline fuelled fights and unrelenting chase sequences as this is a film that never gives the audience long to rest during the pursuit. “Centurion” is in my opinion the best ancient epic film since “Gladiator” and all who are on the fence or still haven’t got round to see it should go and watch it. It is well worth your time and money.

Being a fan on the cast, I will admit that I did not much like the trailers for this. The premise appeared a touch too mean-spirited and didn’t seem like one we could actually relate to, and Steve Carell looked for being presented being a cross in between Michael Scott and Sandra Bullock’s character from All About Steve, in other words, extremely annoying and irritating. So I caught a cost-free advanced screening simply because I such as cast, but was unsure if I desired to shell out to view it. I was pleasantly surprised that this created me laugh a fine quantity of times, but I wouldn’t call it this year’s Hangover because it felt different. To me it had been 50 percent humorous and 50 percent not-so-funny and/or too weird. Pros: -The “mouseterpieces” had been fairly inspired. -The dinner sequence was essentially the most routinely amusing portion on the motion picture. -Jermaine Clement may be the most regularly humorous character of the bunch. -Paul Rudd’s brunch with Steve Carell, Lucy Punch, and David Walliams was one of my personalized favored scenes.
